SVENSKARNE I TEXAS I ORD ACH BILD; Swedes in Texas in Words & Pictures 1835-1918 Volume I & II.; Ett Historiskt-Biografiskt Arbete Samladt och Utgivet af Ernest Severin. Redigeradt Och Utarbetadt af Dr. Alf. L. Scott Pastor T. J. Westerberg.

Red. J. M. Ojerholm, 1919. Historic photographs, text in Swedish language. 604pp.; 605-1209pp. Two volume set. Maroon cloth boards faded, a few spots to fore-edge of both vols. Clean tight set, no names, no writing. Although the text is in Swedish, the 100's of photos, the organization by community, and the 1000's of names make this 2 volume set more than a very valuable rare Texas book; this book is an important resource for those interested in the settlement of early Texas by immigrants from Sweden. Swedes comprise one of the largest of European ethnicities in Texas. Swedish names abound throughout the state both in family and place names. Virtually every walk of life was filled by people of Swedish origins and they have been among the most successfully prosperous groups from the earliest days of their arrival. it is a useful tool for those wishing to trace the family history of their Swedish/Texan forebears. The first volume begins with a general history of Texas and the role of Swedes in forming the new nation/state. It goes on to describe the general business, agricultural, and social aspects of Texas. It is significant that foremost among the chapters are those about educational and religious practices. The communities covered in Volume 1 are: Austin, Palm Valley (Eastern Round Rock), New Sweden, Brushy (old Round Rock), Georgetown, Taylor, and Hutto. Volume 2 continues with coverage of the communities of: Decker, Ericsdale, Jonah, Elroy, Kenedy, Manor, E. Sweden, W. Sweden, Brady, Melvin, Ft.Worth, El Campo, Dallas, Waco, Lund, Type, Kimbro, Manda, Ganado, Crosby, Elgin, Louise, Galveston, Olivia, Temple, Swedonia, Bishop, Swensondale, Lyford, San Antonio, Houston. The final pages of this massive work are dedicated to showing the "Service Flags" of various communities of Swedes who served in the just-ended WWI. These include the rank, company, and location and years of service. GOOD.

The Arrow of Gold - A Story Between Two Notes.

Doubleday, Page, Garden City, New York. 1919 - First U.S. edition. Octavo. pp [vi], 385. Original dark blue cloth blocked in gilt on upper cover. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "A Jean Aubry - son ami - Joseph Conrad - 1919" with with "h" in "Charactères" stroked through by him on the title-page. This is a most impressive association copy: Jean-Aubry translated this book into French and was later the dedicatee of Conrad's The Rover (1923). Conrad appointed him as his official biographer. Jean-Aubry's Joseph Conrad: Life and Letters was published in 1927, three years after Conrad's death. Tipped onto the dedication page is a typed note, most probably made by Aubry, which quotes the dedication made by Conrad to Richard Curle who is the dedicatee of this title. From the library of noted Conrad collector Stanley J. Seeger with his small bookplate on front pastedown. Covers rubbed at the edges. Spine a bit dull. Good. Housed in a custom-made cloth box. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
