Oberstleutnant a.D.).

- Beiliegend Originaldokument vom 24. Generalstabes. Für richtige Abschrift: Danzig, den 29.         Injun and Whitey

New York: The Britton Publishing Co, 1919. First Edition. Near fine/very good. 1st edition of the first novel by Hollywood's first Western movie star. Our Britton Co. edition precedes both the Haughton-Mifflin edition (1920) and the one by Grosset & Dunlap. Near fine in a very good dustjacket, nice looking, and plenty scarce. The jacket is probably in its only state, with no other state of it recorded, despite there being a front flap ad implying either simultaneous or pending publication of the sequel, Injun and Whitey Strike Out for Themselves, which the short-lived Britton Co. had the rights to publish, and planned to publish, but I've never seen a copy with Britton's imprint and I doubt they ever did produce it (Haughton-Mifflin published it in 1921). That's my theory, and when a theory fits all the known facts it has merit, but all reasonable conjectures must be tested before they can be be accepted as true, or in this case, confirmed by evidence to be accepted as a fact, and I have not found proof, nor have I found a credible way to go after proof that would require less than $800 of my time. If I am wrong, there will be an anodyne Biblioctopus "product recall." If I am right, $800 is a bargain. In the very earliest days of American cinema there were Westerns, and they evolved to where there were many magnificent films, and we all know which ones they were, from Tumbleweeds (1925) to Rango (2011). Then there were the others, celluloid monuments to public patience. It isn't like if you've seen one you've seen them all, it's more like if you've seen them all, you feel like you've seen one. In the ongoing effort to build a library, you are going to want friends, because friends will make the process less subjective. And you are going to want quality, because quality will make you happy, so here's the 5th rule of book collecting. Judge the friends you would make with a genial and patient sympathy, and judge the books you would buy with a godlike and superior impartiality (Book Code).

        Le Bestiaire ou cortège d'Orphée

Paris: Éditions de La Sirène,, 1919. Illustré par Raoul Dufy. Square octavo. Original yellow wrappers, black lettered spine and front cover. With the original glassine wrapper. 30 full-page wood-engravings, head- and tailpiece by Raoul Dufy. Ownership inscription (on front free endpaper) of Churchill Lathrop (1901-1996), art historian ("Paris, August, 1937"); neat bookplate of John Lewis (1912-1996), printer and notable collector of printed ephemera. A few nicks to glassine wrapper, a touch of foxing. An excellent copy. Second edition and the only realistically procurable edition of one of the great illustrated books of the 20th century, first issued in 1911 in a tiny print run of 122 copies. This is number 1,057 of 1,250 copies, decidedly scarce: Copac records only two copies in British and Irish institutional libraries (Tate Britain, King's College London), OCLC adding only two more (BnF, Mediatheque de Montpellier). "Apollinaire conceived of the idea of an illustrated bestiary in verse after seeing wood engravings of animals made by Picasso in 1906. He later turned to Dufy for depictions of Orpheus and his accompanying creatures. The combination of his witty and idiosyncratic poems and Dufy's thirty bold, large-scale designs makes this one of the most delightful of livres de peintres" (Ray). Apollinaire, seriously wounded in 1916, succumbed to the influenza pandemic in 1918. To this edition his collaborator Dufy contributes a brief, touching, prefatory note, commenting on the rarity of the first edition and mentioning "la mort soudaine" of the poet.

[Scrapbook DOCUMENTING a STATESIDE WORLD WAR I OFFICER'S TRAINING & SERVICE]

Camp Meade, Maryland; Camp lee, Virginia; Camp Sheridan, Alabama; Taylor Field; Alabama, 1919. Decorative blue cloth portfolio with black cloth ties. Some chipping to album leaves, minor age toning to cloth, otherwise a VG album, except for a few places wear photos might have fallen out, it appears complete.. 78 disbound black album leaves. Over 200 photographs and ephemeral pieces: forms, certificates, letters, notes, invitations, notices, memorandums, ms annotations &c.&c. 13" x 9-3/4" This scrapbook documents Lieutenant Alexander M. Falkenstein's WW1 service from his initial attempt to enlist as an aviator in 1917 until his release from active duty in 1919. Falkenstein appeared to has strong designs to be an aviator, but was denied upon his initial application and was appointed as a Sergeant in the 316th Infantry Regiment, 79th Division, at Camp Meade Maryland where he applied for a commission in the Army Signal Corps' Aviation Section, unfortunately he was sent to Officer's Training School instead in 1918. After graduation he was reassigned to the 45th Infantry Regiment at Camp Sheridan, Alabama, where he was finally permitted to begin training as an aerial Infantry Observer, it was unfortunately short lived, the program being canceled with the Armistice, and Falkenstein accepted reassignment in the division's military police until he was discharged in April of 1919. The scrapbook tells an intimate tale of his experiences during this time with a wide assortment of carefully collected ephemeral material.

AUTOCRACY AND WAR [inscribed by Conrad]

, 1919 1919. [1 of 25, this copy inscribed] London: Printed for Private Circulation (by Thomas J. Wise), 1919. Original light grey wrappers. First Edition, being one of only 25 copies (so stated; this copy is un-numbered, as it was for presentation -- see below). This was the first of Thomas J. Wise's twenty very-limited-issue Conrad pamphlets produced during the twelve months between February 1919 and January 1920; this title is long enough (66 pages) that the wrapper is glued on, rather than being stitched together with the leaves. (As spelled out by Cagle (pp 251-256), Conrad was very much involved in these items -- wanting a share of the considerable cash collectors would pay for them, but also wanting to distance himself from the implied mercantilism that angered his less-affluent fans.) AUTOCRACY AND WAR had appeared in the July 1905 issue of Fortnightly Review, and would later be collected in NOTES ON LIFE & LETTERS.~This is a fine copy (small glue-stains from the binding process near the gutter of some leaves, as we have seen on other copies). Cagle A25. Housed in an attractive morocco-backed slipcase with inner chemise.~This is an inscribed presentation copy by Conrad: on the front wrapper appears, in his hand, "J.B.P. affectionately from J.C. 1919." The recipient was Conrad's literary agent J.B. Pinker -- not just his literary agent, but his close friend as well. Pinker was especially important to Conrad during "the lean years," the half-dozen years before the great success of CHANCE in 1914; during these years Pinker not only managed Conrad's literary efforts, he also managed, in large part, the Conrads' finances (such that, it is said, Conrad would ask Pinker if it was OK to buy his wife a new coat).
