New York: Harper & Brothers, 1919. First Edition. First-hand narrative of a gilded-age prostitute. The author fell into the Life in the 1890s and went on to ply her trade in the mining camps of Butte, Montana and later as a madame in San Fracisco's Tenderloin district. A contemporary clipping (dated December, 1919) tipped on to the front endpaper identifies the author as one "Dolly Ogden," and notes that the book had been recently suppressed by New York's Society for the Suppression of Vice. NOTE: Over the years (as of 2012) we have handled five copies of the first edition of this work. In three copies, the introduction by Judge Ben B. Lindsey (juvenile court judge of Denver) had been neatly excised; in two (and as in the present example) the introduction was intact. Though we have yet to conduct a census of institutional copies, we now feel fairly confident in surmising that this excision represents a point of issue - our theory being that portions of Lindsey's introduction (perhaps the part where he suggests that the book would make good reading for "girls having reached a reasonable maturity...[to learn] what evil is") were thought by the publisher to be injudicious, especially after the Comstock Committee's characterization of the book as "obscene, lewd, lascivious, filthy, indecent, and disgusting;" and that, rather than face prosecution for advocating the sale of smut to children, the publishers instead decided to remove the offending passage. An extremely uncommon work, especially in dustwrapper. First issue (see note below). Octavo. Linen-backed boards, dustjacket; 329pp. Contemporary ownership signature ("J.J. Stephens") to front endpaper; newspaper article tipped on to fixed endpaper. Spine gilt slightly oxidized; faint foxing to linen spine and text block edges; binding slightly pulled but still a firm, about VG copy in the extremely uncommon printed dustwrapper, rubbed, worn, and with a few chips along extremities; just Very Good.

        Les Jardins Precieux

, 1919 1919. CHARMAISON, Raymond. Les Jardins Précieux. Preface by Henri de Régnier. [vi], [8] pp. Illustrated with 8 full-page colour pochoir plates by Charmaison, plus coloured cover illustration and one black and white title illustration. Folio, 490 x 335 mm, bound in original publisher's printed paper folding chemise, preserved in new cloth folding box. Paris: Chez Meynial, 5 November 1919. |~||~||~||~| First Edition. One of 8 copies accompanied by an original watercolour, this "La Treille Rose." A colourful example of Deco luxuriousness, which only pochoir printing under the guidance of Jean Saudé could achieve. One of the premier books of Art Deco illustration. These imaginary "Precious Gardens" are a testament to the power of the printed book as a vehicle for transporting the viewer/reader into the garden and a world of dreams. As Henri Régnier observes in the book's gold-printed preface: "Il contient quelques feuilles avec des lignes et des couleurs, à peine les aurez vous considerées que vous serez transporté dans un pays de lumière et de soleil..." The exquisite coloured plates offer garden views centered on a special garden feature. For example, the cover illustrates an idyllic forest stream; plate 1, "La Salle Verte" shows a Roman garden with pool, bright flowers, and marble columns; plate 2, "Les Flo" captures a yew-covered walk along the seashore; plate 3, "La Jarre" a terracotta pot is the focus of a brightly-flowered Mediterranean garden; plate 4, "L'Allée Rouge" evokes an Oriental garden with iris, red walkway, Japanese bridge and exotic trees; plate 5, "L'Atrium" an interior garden with fountain, potted trees and lounging cushions; plate 6, "Le Berceau" a lush covered berceau with tropical fruit; plate 7, "La Charmille" a verdant gateway into a hortus inclusis; and plate 8, "La Creille Rose" a night-time view of wisteria and roses on a trellis under the stars etc. -- each one rendered in the richest colours of the pochoir technique. Pierre Corrard, novelist and poet, established his publishing house in 1912 and began working with such noted illustrators of the day as Georges Barbier, Charles Martin and A.E. Marty. After his death his wife, Nicole Corrard, resumed his publishing efforts under the name "Collection Pierre Corrard." The luxurious pochoir renderings of fashion designs issued by Corrard conveyed the artistry of French haute couture during this period; the same is true of his stunning plates for Les Jardins Précieux, which provided a fresh expression of the new artistic visions of the "jardin d'artiste." Lacking ribbon tie, else, a very fine copy.

Arab Tribes of the Baghdad Wilayat. July 1918. Issued by the Arab Bureau, Baghdad.

Calcutta, Superintendent Government Printing, India, 1919. - Folio (212 x 335 mm). (2), 276, IX, (1) pp., final blank, with one folding plate (counted as p. 152). Contemp. half cloth with original printed boards, probably issued thus. Excessively rare manual on the social, political and economic structures of the Arab tribes living in the Baghdad Vilayet (Province) as drawn up in July 1918, only months before the partitioning of the Ottoman Empire ended the old administrative divisions and led to the formation of several new states - indeed, to the creation of the modern Arab world. Arranged alphabetically by the names of the tribes, this handbook - essentially a carefully compiled and redacted British intelligence file printed for the use of British Political Officers and their assistants in a region then undergoing dramatic upheavals - offers surprisingly detailed information on the tribes' origins, loyalties and internal quarrels, the locations of their settlements, strength of their possessions, economic and bargaining power, as well as their kinships, often including genealogical tables. The names of the tribes' leaders are given in full, frequently also in the original Arabic. A typical entry for the Albu Abbas informs us that this tribe, usually found on both banks of the Tigris below Samarra, where their Sheikh dwells, owns 500 houses and commands some 300 armed men. They are said to be cultivators with few horses and have private quarrels with the Albu Nisan. "Saiyid Muhammad al Naqib controls the 'Abdul Rahman and 'Ail as well as the 'Abdullah. Went over to the Turks in November 1917 in return for a bribe, after having been serviceable to us. Saiyid Hamdi has been satisfactory [.]". - Both as a source of otherwise nearly unobtainable population statistics as well as for the political history of a region in which at this time traditional tribal feuds became mingled with international high politics, this compendium must be regarded as invaluable. Considering the limited scope of intended distribution and the sensitive nature of the information contained, it is safe to say that the work never had more than a very limited press-run; indeed; a single other copy is known today in libraries worldwide (University of Zurich, shelfmark F I b 12); the British Library catalogue does not record the work. - Covers rubbed; a few small tears to the folding plate, otherwise very well preserved. No copy in auction records. OCLC 729268761. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Autograph letter signed in full to the noted Czech-born Austrian architect Adolf Loos

1/2 page text to recto with floor plan (by Loos?) in pencil to verso. Small octavo, 215 x 132 mm. Dated Mödling, near Vienna, February 7, 1919. Schoenberg's name and address handstamped in purple ink to upper left corner. In German (with translation). Schoenberg suggests an answer to the "call" of the French writer Henri Barbusse for his pacifist "Clarté" movement. He suggests times that he would be available for a possible meeting: "Dear Herr Loos, in my opinion we should react to Henri BarbusseÂ’s call that was in the papers of February 5. Ideally, the three of us: you, Kraus, and I. Would you like to discuss that with me?..." Creased at folds and overall; hinged at upper edge with archival tape. . Unpublished (except for the incipit on the website of Arnold Schönberg Center, Vienna). Adolf Loos (1870-1933) was a famous early modern architect. “Kraus” is probably a reference to the writer and journalist Karl Kraus (1874-1936), a friend of both Loos and Schoenberg. Henri Barbusse (1873-1935) was a French writer, quite famous in his time; he founded the “Clarté” movement in 1919 together with Romain Rolland.

A true "Boom Town," Nitro was built from nothing with a government mandate to produce much-needed gunpowder for AmericaÂ’s WWI mobilization after it became clear America faced a severe production shortage. Congress passed the "Deficiency Appropriations Act" on October 6, 1917, part of which ultimately provided for the construction of Nitro. The name was selected by the Ordnance Department and referred to a chemical (nitro-cellulose) used in production of the gunpowder. Ground was broken in Dec. 1917, but unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately), less than a year later the war had ended, and so too had the need for Nitro's extensive production facilities. By the end of 1918, the plant had been declared surplus and by the end of the following year the entire site (including the town) had been transferred to the Charleston Industrial Corporation. The album here offered details this transition from war effort to private enterprise and reveals a close and vibrant community. Images include homes (both interior and exterior), community events (picnics, sales, etc.), construction, transportation, schools, recreation, and the surrounding landscape. Postwar optimism abounds both in the subjects of the photos as well as in the warm, casual tone of the captions. A rare slice of Americana at the dawn of the Jazz Age.

        My Man Jeeves

London, George Newnes, Limited, [1919]., 1919. FIRST EDITION, first impression [Butler and Tanner Printers]. Octavo, pp. 251 + 2 ads. Publisher's red cloth, titled and decorated in black to spine. A used copy showing some acceptable wear and soiling, cheap paper toned as usual, bookplate to pastedown, stained to inside gutters. Remains a respectable copy. 'My Man Jeeves' introduced the world to affable, indolent Bertie Wooster and his precise, capable valet, Jeeves. Some of the finest examples of humorous writing found in English literature are woven around the relationship between these two men of very different classes and temperaments. Where Bertie is impetuous and feeble, Jeeves is cool-headed and poised. McIlvaine A22a

The second and larger volume contains text and approximately 120 pages with single or multiple B&W images of ukiyo-e prints. Original silk-covered boards of gold brocade to the larger volume, purple cords, paper label on front cover. The pages and covers of both volumes are immensely clean, with scarcely a fingering mark to be found. Original patterned cloth folder, with bone [?] toggles. Very moderate wear and slight fading to the folder. A Very Good Plus set of books in a Very Good Plus folder. Scarce in any condition and perhaps the rarest title by John Stewart Happer. From the author's preface: "The collection belonging to Mr. K. Kawaura has long been known to collectors of Nishiki-ye... here one may study prints which are rarely offered for sale. Besides the many fine examples of famous prints, there are many which have never previously come under my observation -- a fact which in a measure attests to their rarity.". First Edition. Japanese Cord-sewn. Very Good Plus. Elephant Folio - over 15" - 23" tall.

Initially discussed as early as July 1914, the start of World War I halted production and the actual publication did not begin until December 1919. At Stinsford his grandfather was a founder of the church "quire," the group of musicians who played for services; the churchyard contains the remains of both Hardy's wives, Emma Gifford Hardy and Florence Dugdale Hardy, as well as Hardy's heart, the rest of his body having been interred in the Poets' Corner at Westminster Abbey. A very handsomely bound set. Exterior dimensions of complete set: 1,315 x 235 x 163 mm.

A dust-wrapper was not issued with book until the 1927 edition. This is one of only four books by Wharton that concerned WWI, the others being Fighting France (1915), The Marne (1918), and A Son at the Front (1923).
