Wilsontól csak wilsoni békét?! [From Wilson, Only Wilson-Peace?!]

Országos Propaganda Bizottság (Kultura) (1919), Budapest - Lithographic poster. 95 × 63 cm. Wilson's strict look portrait in black on the upper half of the poster. In contrast with burning white text on the red background. The angry poster refers to Wilson's Fourteen Points that has been the basis for the terms of the German surrender, as negotiated at the Paris Peace Conference at the end of World War I. The 10th point stated that "The people of Austro-Hungary, whose place among the nations we wish to see safeguarded and assured, should be accorded the freest opportunity to autonomous development." The Hungarians feared that these grants will remain only promises, and they protested against the ideas of Wilson with this poster.

Ten Days that Shook the World

Boni and Liveright; New York 1919 - This 5.5 x 8.5, 371 page hardcover book is a beautiful copy of the first edition of this title, put out in 1919. The book is in near fine with only a few condition issues to speak of. The green cloth covers are clean and the colors still bright. The front panel title lettering in orange is still vibrant. There is a touch of fading to the spine but only just a bit. The lettering is still very clear and discernible. There is just a tad bit of crinkling and wear to the spine crown and foot but really this is all but negligible. All four corners show show very slight wear but really again this is not a real issue to the condition of the book. The interior hinges and binding are still tight and intact. The two end paper maps are present. Someone at one point pasted a picture of John Reed, the author, on the front flyleaf. This appears to have been a picture from a periodical or a magazine. The rear flyleaf has a newspaper article from the San Francisco Examiner pasted in noting how Reed had become disillusioned with communism at a later date. There is a third newspaper clipping from 1936 titled "The Revolutionary Career of John Reed" laid in. Beyond that the interior text is in near fine condition with the important pictures present and the text pages without marking or blemish. All in all a fabulous copy of this desirable title with a plastic protective sheet now enclosing the two covers of the book. Of course, Reed's book provides one of the most accurate and historically valuable descriptions of the Russian Revolution of 1917 and the immediate aftermath. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        South

London: William Heinemann,, December 1919. The Story of Shackleton's Last Expedition 1914?-1917. Octavo. Original midnight-blue cloth, spine and upper cover lettered in silver and with large block of the Endurance in silver to the upper board, publisher's device in blind to lower board. Colour frontispiece, folding map and 87 plates. Ink inscription to front free endpaper with some marks, half-title also underlined in blue ink. Surface rubbing mainly to rear board but also generally to extremities, some wear to corners, front hinge a little cracked, light spotting to edges and end leaves, still a very good copy. First edition, second impression, one month after the first and printed on superior paper stock, so less prone to the heavy browning which tends to mar the first impression. Shackleton embarked in 1914 on the Endurance to make the first traverse of the Antarctic continent; a journey of some 1800 miles from sea to sea. But 1915 turned into an unusually icy year in Antarctica; after drifting trapped in the ice for nine months, the Endurance was crushed in the ice on October 27. "Shackleton now showed his supreme qualities of leadership. With five companions he made a voyage of 800 miles in a 22-foot boat through some of the stormiest seas in the world, crossed the unknown lofty interior of South Georgia, and reached a Norwegian whaling station on the north coast. After three attempts. Shackleton succeeded (30 August 1916) in rescuing the rest of the Endurance party and bringing them to South America" (DNB). Amazingly, all members of the Endurance party survived the ordeal, attributing their survival to Shackleton's exceptional leadership qualities. In recent years, this factor has led to the re-interpretation of the book in terms of a leadership and man-management manual, and several influential attempts have been made to distil from the narrative the underlying principles of Shackleton's command in order that they might be applied more widely. As Apsley Cherry-Garrard remarked in Worst Journey in the World; "For a joint scientific and geographical piece of organization, give me Scott; for a Winter Journey, Wilson; for a dash to the Pole and nothing else, Amundsen; and if I am in the devil of a hole and want to get out of it, give me Shackleton every time.

        Colas Breugnon Burgundian [Signed]

New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1919. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. A Very Good copy of the first American Edition, first printing, in the Publisher's original blue cloth with the spine and front board decorated in gilt (minor rubbing, small bit of discoloration the the lower corner of each board where it meets the spine, offsetting to front endpapers and lighter offsetting to the title page from prior presence of that newspaper clipping -- no dust jacket), SIGNED BY ROMAIN ROLLAND on the title page; a novel set in the Burgundy region of France and told in the first person by Colas who relates the joys and sorrows of his fifty years. Of the book Austrian novelist and playwright Stefan Zweig wrote: "Colas Breugnon" is a charming romance of life in Burgundy three hundred years ago....[and] may perhaps be regarded as Rolland's most successful work. This is because it is woven in one piece, because it flows with a continuous rhythm, because its progress is never arrested by the discussion of thorny problems. It is written throughout in the same key....This work is unlike any of Rolland's other writings. It is not an historic study, a critical appreciation, a philosophic essay, nor yet even, in the strictest sense of the word, a novel. It is rather a volume of reminiscences as told by a man of fifty; and the very aimlessness with which this man talks is in itself a pleasure; for Breugnon is himself the one subject of the book, holding our attention by the display of a wayward, sympathetic, and aggressive personality." [The Novel provided the basis for an opera by the Russian composer Dmitry Borisovich Kabalevsky.] Romain Rolland won the 1915 Nobel Prize in Literature "as a tribute to the lofty idealism of his literary production and to the sympathy and love of truth with which he has described different types of human beings". (In 1915, the Committee determined that none of the nominees merited the Prize and, as then allowed by its governing statutes, postponed the award of the Prize to 1916 at which time it awarded the 1915 Prize to Rolland -- the 1916 Prize went to Carl Gustaf Verner von Heidenstam.) Signed copies of the book in any language are quite scarce and signed copies of it in English translation are absolute hen's teeth. A Very Good copy, SIGNED BY ROMAIN ROLLAND. QUITE SCARCE INDEED.

        Pastor Ephraim Magnus. Drama.

Berlin, Fischer, 1919.. 8°. 267 + 1 S. Priv. Hld. der Zeit.. EA. WG II 1. Mit eighd. Widm. Jahnns an Fred A. Angermayer (1889 - 1951).

[Give Us Food! If We Do Not Have Enough Strength To Work, We Cannot Give You Tools And Clothes!]

Seidner Plakátgyár (1919), Budapest - Lithographic poster. 126 × 96 cm. Four figures of poor and hopeless proletarians in the foreground, a man sitting with his head in his right hand, and a sledgehammer laid to his leg, a little boy with a toy wagon, and two women desperately arguing with the two figures of the background, a wealthy peasant or "kulak" with his wife sit on a wagon filled up with a pig and poultry. The orange coloured text is overlaid and overlaying the image which gives the perspective of the composition. In this work Zádor combined the ominous and threatening atmosphere that was characteristic for the proletarian-art with the manner of the advertisement posters of its time to create this striking image. István Zádor (1882-1963) was a Hungarian graphic artist and painter. He studied in Paris at École des Beaux-Art. He served as war correspondent who documented the actions in drawings during WWI and he continued with such reports of the time of the revolutions in Hungary in 1918-1919. He designed propaganda poster for the short lived Hungarian Soviet Republic in 1919, this is an example of such works. Chipped edges. Mounted on japanese-paper.

Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Lyman Spitzer With Regards Calvin Coolidge." Near fine in a very good dust jacket. The recipient, Lyman Spitzer was an American theoretical physicist and astronomer. As a scientist, he carried out research into star formation, plasma physics, and in 1946, conceived the idea of telescopes operating in outer space. In those years, he spoke and wrote frequently. A favorite topic, were "the fundamental principles of sound community life which cannot be stated too emphatically or too often. Few public men of to-day have shown a finer combination of right feeling and clear thinking about these principles, with a gift for the pithy expression of them, than has Governor Calvin Coolidge.

The inscription reads: "To T.J.Lane from C.H.K.M. - With best wishes on his leaving Eton. Eton: Dec. 1919 (?). Sir (Clarence) Henry Kennett Marten KCVO (28 October 1872 ?- 11 December 1948) was the Provost of Eton and the private tutor of Queen Elizabeth II. Henry Marten was born with his twin sister Isabel in Kensington, London. He was the younger son of Sir Alfred Marten and his wife Patricia. Marten entered Eton College, and from there matriculated at Balliol College, Oxford in 1891. In 1895, he graduated with a first class degree in modern history, and accepted an offer from Edmond Warre to return to Eton to teach history. He was a founder member of the Historical Association in 1906. In 1912, he published The Groundwork of British History with his co-author, George Townsend Warner, which became "one of the most used school textbooks of the first half of the twentieth century".With E. H. Carter,[a] he wrote a school textbook for younger children, in several volumes, titled simply "Histories". Other collaborative works included The Teaching of History in 1938. In 1925, Marten narrowly missed becoming Master of Magdalene College, in Cambridge, when he was recommended to Lord Braybrooke as a possible candidate, but the College Fellows opposed the appointment, preferring another candidate, A. S. Ramsey. Braybrooke chose to appoint neither, and instead A. B. Ramsay, who was Lower Master at Eton, got the job. Marten was appointed to Ramsay's vacated post at Eton. Further promotions followed, to Vice-Provost in 1929, and Provost in 1945. In 1938, Marten began instructing Princess Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth II) in constitutional history. He was appointed Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in the 1945 New Year Honours, and received the accolade from King George VI on 4 March 1945, on the steps of Eton College Chapel. He died unmarried in the Provost's Lodge at Eton, where the Marten Library is named after him. The library contains his collection of books, which he bequeathed to Eton on his death. (Wikipedia) ______________________________ The publication includes: Birth of Public Schools / The Foundation of Eton / Growth of Eton / The Buildings of Eton / Eton in Prose / Eton in Verse The mentioned verses are for example by Thomas de Quincey, Charles Dickens, Benjamin Disraeli, Thomas Gray, Alexander William Kinglake, Samuel Pepys, Percy Bysshe Shelley, James Kenneth Stephen, Algernon Charles Swinburne, Alfred Lord Tennyson, Horace Walpole, Isaak Walton, etc. etc. Eton College, usually referred to as Eton, is a British independent boarding school for boarding pupils aged between 13 to 18 years. It is a large boys' school, with over 1,300 pupils, and was founded in 1440 by King Henry VI as "The King's College of Our Lady of Eton besides Wyndsor". The School is located in the village of Eton, near Windsor in England, and is one of nine English independent schools, commonly referred to as "public schools", included in the original Public Schools Act 1868. Following the public school tradition, Eton is a full boarding school, which means all pupils live at the school, and is one of four remaining single-sex boys' public schools (the others being Winchester College, Harrow School and Radley College) to continue this practice. Eton has a long list of distinguished former pupils. David Cameron is the nineteenth British Prime Minister to have attended Eton, and has recommended that Eton set up a school in the state sector to help drive up standards. The College has also educated generations of British aristocracy and members of the Royal family, the most recent being Prince William and his brother Prince Harry. Eton has traditionally been referred to as "the chief nurse of England's statesmen", and has been described as the most famous public school in the world. Early in the 20th century, a historian of Eton wrote, "No other school can claim to have sent forth such a cohort of distinguished figures to make their mark on the world." The Good Schools Guide called the school "the number one boys' public school," adding, "The teaching and facilities are second to none." The school is a member of the G20 Schools Group. (Wikipedia)
