        Colas Breugnon Burgundian [Signed]

New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1919. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. A Very Good copy of the first American Edition, first printing, in the Publisher's original blue cloth with the spine and front board decorated in gilt (minor rubbing, small bit of discoloration the the lower corner of each board where it meets the spine, offsetting to front endpapers and lighter offsetting to the title page from prior presence of that newspaper clipping -- no dust jacket), SIGNED BY ROMAIN ROLLAND on the title page; a novel set in the Burgundy region of France and told in the first person by Colas who relates the joys and sorrows of his fifty years. Of the book Austrian novelist and playwright Stefan Zweig wrote: "Colas Breugnon" is a charming romance of life in Burgundy three hundred years ago....[and] may perhaps be regarded as Rolland's most successful work. This is because it is woven in one piece, because it flows with a continuous rhythm, because its progress is never arrested by the discussion of thorny problems. It is written throughout in the same key....This work is unlike any of Rolland's other writings. It is not an historic study, a critical appreciation, a philosophic essay, nor yet even, in the strictest sense of the word, a novel. It is rather a volume of reminiscences as told by a man of fifty; and the very aimlessness with which this man talks is in itself a pleasure; for Breugnon is himself the one subject of the book, holding our attention by the display of a wayward, sympathetic, and aggressive personality." [The Novel provided the basis for an opera by the Russian composer Dmitry Borisovich Kabalevsky.] Romain Rolland won the 1915 Nobel Prize in Literature "as a tribute to the lofty idealism of his literary production and to the sympathy and love of truth with which he has described different types of human beings". (In 1915, the Committee determined that none of the nominees merited the Prize and, as then allowed by its governing statutes, postponed the award of the Prize to 1916 at which time it awarded the 1915 Prize to Rolland -- the 1916 Prize went to Carl Gustaf Verner von Heidenstam.) Signed copies of the book in any language are quite scarce and signed copies of it in English translation are absolute hen's teeth. A Very Good copy, SIGNED BY ROMAIN ROLLAND. QUITE SCARCE INDEED.

        Pastor Ephraim Magnus. Drama.

Berlin, Fischer, 1919.. 8°. 267 + 1 S. Priv. Hld. der Zeit.. EA. WG II 1. Mit eighd. Widm. Jahnns an Fred A. Angermayer (1889 - 1951).

[Give Us Food! If We Do Not Have Enough Strength To Work, We Cannot Give You Tools And Clothes!]

Seidner Plakátgyár (1919), Budapest - Lithographic poster. 126 × 96 cm. Four figures of poor and hopeless proletarians in the foreground, a man sitting with his head in his right hand, and a sledgehammer laid to his leg, a little boy with a toy wagon, and two women desperately arguing with the two figures of the background, a wealthy peasant or "kulak" with his wife sit on a wagon filled up with a pig and poultry. The orange coloured text is overlaid and overlaying the image which gives the perspective of the composition. In this work Zádor combined the ominous and threatening atmosphere that was characteristic for the proletarian-art with the manner of the advertisement posters of its time to create this striking image. István Zádor (1882-1963) was a Hungarian graphic artist and painter. He studied in Paris at École des Beaux-Art. He served as war correspondent who documented the actions in drawings during WWI and he continued with such reports of the time of the revolutions in Hungary in 1918-1919. He designed propaganda poster for the short lived Hungarian Soviet Republic in 1919, this is an example of such works. Chipped edges. Mounted on japanese-paper.

Boston & New York: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1919. First edition of the second enlarged edition. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Lyman Spitzer With Regards Calvin Coolidge." Near fine in a very good dust jacket. The recipient, Lyman Spitzer was an American theoretical physicist and astronomer. As a scientist, he carried out research into star formation, plasma physics, and in 1946, conceived the idea of telescopes operating in outer space. Spitzer invented the stellarator plasma device and is the namesake of NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope. Attached to the inner gutter is a letter on White House stationary to the recipient stating that President Coolidge would be "glad" to autograph this book. Before serving as Vice President, and then succeeded to the Presidency, Calvin Coolidge was the 46th Lieutenant Governor of Massachusetts (1916-19), and then the 48th Governor (1919-21). In those years, he spoke and wrote frequently. A favorite topic, were "the fundamental principles of sound community life which cannot be stated too emphatically or too often. Few public men of to-day have shown a finer combination of right feeling and clear thinking about these principles, with a gift for the pithy expression of them, than has Governor Calvin Coolidge.

The inscription reads: "To T.J.Lane from C.H.K.M. - With best wishes on his leaving Eton. Eton: Dec. 1919 (?). Sir (Clarence) Henry Kennett Marten KCVO (28 October 1872 ?- 11 December 1948) was the Provost of Eton and the private tutor of Queen Elizabeth II. Henry Marten was born with his twin sister Isabel in Kensington, London. He was the younger son of Sir Alfred Marten and his wife Patricia. Marten entered Eton College, and from there matriculated at Balliol College, Oxford in 1891. In 1895, he graduated with a first class degree in modern history, and accepted an offer from Edmond Warre to return to Eton to teach history. He was a founder member of the Historical Association in 1906. In 1912, he published The Groundwork of British History with his co-author, George Townsend Warner, which became "one of the most used school textbooks of the first half of the twentieth century".With E. H. Carter,[a] he wrote a school textbook for younger children, in several volumes, titled simply "Histories". Other collaborative works included The Teaching of History in 1938. In 1925, Marten narrowly missed becoming Master of Magdalene College, in Cambridge, when he was recommended to Lord Braybrooke as a possible candidate, but the College Fellows opposed the appointment, preferring another candidate, A. S. Ramsey. Braybrooke chose to appoint neither, and instead A. B. Ramsay, who was Lower Master at Eton, got the job. Marten was appointed to Ramsay's vacated post at Eton. Further promotions followed, to Vice-Provost in 1929, and Provost in 1945. In 1938, Marten began instructing Princess Elizabeth (later Queen Elizabeth II) in constitutional history. He was appointed Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in the 1945 New Year Honours, and received the accolade from King George VI on 4 March 1945, on the steps of Eton College Chapel. He died unmarried in the Provost's Lodge at Eton, where the Marten Library is named after him. The library contains his collection of books, which he bequeathed to Eton on his death. (Wikipedia) ______________________________ The publication includes: Birth of Public Schools / The Foundation of Eton / Growth of Eton / The Buildings of Eton / Eton in Prose / Eton in Verse The mentioned verses are for example by Thomas de Quincey, Charles Dickens, Benjamin Disraeli, Thomas Gray, Alexander William Kinglake, Samuel Pepys, Percy Bysshe Shelley, James Kenneth Stephen, Algernon Charles Swinburne, Alfred Lord Tennyson, Horace Walpole, Isaak Walton, etc. etc. Eton College, usually referred to as Eton, is a British independent boarding school for boarding pupils aged between 13 to 18 years. It is a large boys' school, with over 1,300 pupils, and was founded in 1440 by King Henry VI as "The King's College of Our Lady of Eton besides Wyndsor". The School is located in the village of Eton, near Windsor in England, and is one of nine English independent schools, commonly referred to as "public schools", included in the original Public Schools Act 1868. Following the public school tradition, Eton is a full boarding school, which means all pupils live at the school, and is one of four remaining single-sex boys' public schools (the others being Winchester College, Harrow School and Radley College) to continue this practice. Eton has a long list of distinguished former pupils. David Cameron is the nineteenth British Prime Minister to have attended Eton, and has recommended that Eton set up a school in the state sector to help drive up standards. The College has also educated generations of British aristocracy and members of the Royal family, the most recent being Prince William and his brother Prince Harry. Eton has traditionally been referred to as "the chief nurse of England's statesmen", and has been described as the most famous public school in the world. Early in the 20th century, a historian of Eton wrote, "No other school can claim to have sent forth such a cohort of distinguished figures to make their mark on the world." The Good Schools Guide called the school "the number one boys' public school," adding, "The teaching and facilities are second to none." The school is a member of the G20 Schools Group. (Wikipedia)

Set of 93 large silver gelatin print photographs, striking and unusual views centering around Peking and a few in the Gobi Desert, taken and compiled by an American Marine

Beijing, 1919. Peking and Gobi Desert Large Silver Gelatin Photographs Lively Funeral Procession Executed Criminals Horse Marines Mounted Detachment 1919 Beijing, 1919. Set of 93 large silver gelatin print photographs, striking and unusual views centering around Peking and a few in the Gobi Desert, taken and compiled by an American marine serving in China under Major E.L. Bigler as part of the famous "Horse Marines." Photographs measure approximately 14 x 8 cm, with exception of two smaller photographs measuring approximately 11 x 6,5 cm, and two panoramic views measuring 29 x 9 cm, mounted to black cardstock leafs, with manuscript captions. Leafs tattered and chipped, otherwise in Very Good Condition. Highlights of Peking, including two exceptional wide angle landscape views, include foreboding structures and great icons dating to antiquity, ceremony and tradition related to death, tangible symbols of tradition and spirituality, public death sentencing and display, royal palaces, images of extreme poverty, marble carved monuments, and the remaining presence of foreigners following the First World War. In addition, some rare scenes captured far in the Gobi Desert include nomadic Mongolians and their yurt encampment. Finally, five (5) graphic photographs show capital punishment for petty crimes, including a decapitated head hanging in a tree, and one unsettling war scene of an executed soldier who appears to have been scalped. Some of the images feature, among other things: • A spectacular and lively funeral procession • Statues on the road to the Ming Tombs • Marco Polo Bridge constructed in the Jin Dynasty • Views of Summer Palace • Ruins of the Old Summer Palace • Temple of Heaven • A caravan of white mourning carts struggling on a muddy road • The Great Wall • The Five Pagoda temple in Western Hills • Locals on Hatamen Street • Statues of pagan deities • The tomb of a Tibetan Buddhist Lama • The Austrian Legation Headquarters (Austrian Consulate in Beijing) • A winter scene in the Northern Hills The photograph and caption of Major Epamindondas Lawrence Bigler (1870-1963), China Marines serves to date the images quite precisely. He served twice in China, the first time as 1st Lieutenant from at least 1910 to 1912, and the second time, after achieving the rank of Major for the Peking Horse Marines, serving in Peking for a short period in 1919. (The captions in the album title him as "Major Bigler"). Further research is warranted to ascertain if he was then posted elsewhere in China. Please Note: Scenes of Decapitation Cannot be Shown Here If you would like to see additional images please contact us through the template and we will send you a link. Serious Inquires Only Please . Very Good.

        Autograph Letter Signed

British airship commander, the first to use a British airship on patrol in World War One and the first to make a transatlantic airship flight in 1919. ALS, 2pp (single leaf), 4½" X 7½", Cardington, England, 1930 February 25. Addressed to the librarian of Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry. Near fine. Single original mailing fold. Blind-embossed crest. Boldly penned in blue fountain pen from the "Royal Airship Works," Scott transmits "the 'Royal Aeronautical Society' Journal, of November 1929 [not present], which include a copy of the lecture I gave before the Society, on the subject of 'Handling & Mooring of Airships'...." Handsomely signed in full. Scott was killed eight months later in the spectacular crash of the airship R 101 in northern France -- which signaled the end of Britain's interest in dirigibles. Extremely scarce in this form, especially with dirigible content.

        The War Poems

London: William Heinemann,, 1919. Small octavo. Original red cloth, printed labels to spine and front board. Spine faded, and title label tanned and slightly scuffed, ends and corner gently bumped, faint fading around board edges but still some vividness to the cloth sides, mild toning to some leaves, but on the whole a sound copy in very good condition. First edition, first impression, signed by Sassoon in pencil on the title page, of Sassoon's key poetical statement on the war. This collection includes many of the author's war poems as well as 12 previously unpublished pieces. Signed copies of this definitive title are, for some reason, very scarce indeed - we have only ever handled one. This copy comes from the collection (though without ownership inscription) of Rolf O. Barber, a schoolteacher at Oundle who tutored Sassoon's son George. He developed a friendship with the poet and possessed a number of signed and inscribed Sassoon books.
