One of the most important works on Jewish art, written by the prominent Jewish writer and art collector Salli Kirschstein (1869-1935): "Kirschstein, who was born in Kolmar, Poland, became a prominent merchant in Berlin. He was active in Jewish affairs and as a director of the "Juedischer Volksverein" did much to help foreign Jews living in Germany during World War I. Kirschstein was an expert on Jewish art and wrote articles on the subjecto for many publications.       Berlin: Kunstanstalt Weylandt, [1918?]. Lithograph in colors, 72cm x 48cm (ca 28" x 19"). Small repaired tears to extremities; one larger repaired chip at bottom center; small losses at corners; Very Good - Grade B/B+. Archivally backed on linen. & & Oppenheim, who achieved equal fame as a typographer and printmaker, produced a number of posters for the relief of German WW1 veterans, many of whom were returning home to ruined domiciles and extreme poverty. The text reads: "Help! The worthy soldiers who pass through Berlin on their journey home, after severe privation, must be given support - remit money to the Soldiers'; Council Assistance - the Berlin command will use it to give assistance to the needy! Speed is essential!" Signed in print by Otto Weis, Kommandant of Berlin; Otto Vollbehr, Director of the organization; and Rudolf Breitscheid, Interim Minister of the Interior. These latter two signatures will be of some interest to collectors: Breitscheid was the son of a bookseller, and Wollbehr was among the greatest bibliophiles of his generation, amassing an important collection of incunabula which was purchased by the Library of Congress in 1929 for $1.5 million.

      1918. MANSFIELD, Jr., Richard. COURAGE! NY, Moffat, Yard and Company (1918). Octavo. xii,67pp. First edition. Introduced, selected and arranged by Witter Bynner. With two autograph letters, signed, from the author to a Mr. Lee, who had requested a photograph of Mansfield for publication. Mansfield had provided photos of himself as Shylock (probably in a student production at Phillips Academy), and then a photo in uniform. The latter is the frontispiece of this his only collection of poems, published after his death at nineteen. Carefully polished, warm, and intelligent, they are a little in the elegiac spirit of Housman, perhaps by way of Witter Bynner, whose "Grenstone" poems are the subject of "A Lament for Arcady" (p.5). Here "Grenstone," a village in New Hampshire, is compared with "Barakeesh," the imaginary city of domes, spires and minarets which figures in the first group of poems. The second group is a compound of idealism, anger, yearning and finally disillusion about World War I. After he was refused service on account of his health (probably a faulty heart) he finally was accepted by the Aviation Signal Corps and served at Fort Terry, NJ. His friend and correspondent Jack Wright encouraged him to try the Air Force rather than the Machine Gun Corps, and referred to his "temperament and dramaticism" (See "A Poet of the Air. Letters of Jack Morris Wright, First Lt. of the American Aviation in France, 1917-1918." Boston, 1918). Mansfield, who was raised in New London, was the son of the famous actor and writer of the same name. A rare collection by a little- known soldier-poet, in blue boards with printed label. Very Good condition.& & This wonderfully graphic illustration commemorates the intersection of two momentous events in Jewish history. When General Sir Edmund Allenby’s British forces liberated Jerusalem on December 9, 1917, it happily coincided with the annual celebration of Chanukah; as Judah Macabee liberated the Jews then, so it would seem Allenby did the same two millennia later. A portrait of U.S. President Woodrow Wilson is centered between the two panels in a position of honor uniting the two.& & WOODROW WILSON AND ISRAEL. In 1917 Lord Balfour sent a letter to Lord Rothschild, stating that the British Government would facilitate the establishment of a national home for the Jewish people of Palestine [The Balfour Declaration]. President Wilson later enthusiastically expressed his support for the declaration when he stated: “The allied nations with the fullest concurrence of our government and people are agreed that in Palestine shall be laid the foundations of a Jewish Commonwealth.” It was not the first time that Wilson had revealed his admiration for the Jews, in fact he believed that the ancient Jewish nation provided a model for the American colonists: “ the spirit and essence of our Constitution, the influence of the Hebrew Commonwealth was paramount in that it was not only the highest authority for the principle, ‘that rebellion to tyrants is obedience to God,’ but also because it was in itself a divine precedent for a pure democracy, as distinguished from monarchy, aristocracy or any other form of government.” & & SIR EDMUND ALLENBY. In 1917, Allenby was given command of the Egyptian Expeditionary Force and it is this command in the Middle East from which his fame derives. One of his first moves was to support T.E. Lawrence amongst the Arabs with two hundred thousand pounds a month. During his campaign against the Turks in Palestine he won The Third Battle of Gaza by surprising the defenders with an attack at Beersheba. His force pushed on towards Jerusalem where the Ottomans were beaten at Junction Station and the Holy City was liberated. Allenby entered Jerusalem on December 11, 1917, after having dismounted from his horse out of respect for the dignity of the place and its historic moment in time.& & This broadside, representing the 2000 year-old longing for an independent Jewish Homeland linking the Maccabees, Chanukah, General Allenby and President Woodrow Wilson is extremely rare and the first example which we have seen.

Lovely example of this scarce book and quite unique as it has excellent provenance as a presentation copy. It has been signed twice; once on the front end page: "Walter de la Mare 1929", and also a Christmas card, with the text being "The Hostage" by de la Mare, has been tipped into the book between the verso of the front end page and the half-title page, and signed and inscribed: "Walter de la Mare with all good wishes, for Samuel Heiman". Samuel Heiman's small bookplate is also present on the front pastedown, and the title page has been embossed "Presentation Copy" in the upper corner (presumably by de la Mare). Mr. Heiman was a famous book collector living in New York City in the early 1900s who was noted for always wanting to get personal inscriptions from authors he enjoyed and collected. Part of his collection was sold off in a sale of books 'from the library of R. E. Blackshaw, Chicago, and Samuel Heiman, New York' held the end of April 1926 by the American Art Association, Inc. The book is bound in dark blue cloth with gilt printing and outlining on the front panel. It has just a tiny fraction of spine slant and a touch of shelfwear to spine ends and corners, but otherwise is in excellent condition: clean, tight, and has no previous owner writing in it. The binding cloth is protected by a clear removable mylar cover. Poetry, divided into the following 'divisions' with several poems in each section: Up and Down, Boys and Girls, Three Queer Tales, Places and People, Beasts, Witches and Fairies, Earth and Air, and Songs. ; 8" x 6"; 122 pages; Signed by Author .

Original color pictorial folding covers with ribbon ties. Limited to 475 numbered copies (#218), printed on laid paper, watermarked. Each plate very good condition, but contain remnants of plastic tape on verso of image not affecting images. Some minor marginal tearing of fragile paper. Binding spine sl. frayed and covers a little soiled. A remarkable survival. Exceedingly scarce and desirable graphic art by this exemplary French artist.

"In his 1818 monograph "Ds Kontinuum" Hermann Weyl initiated a program for the arithmetical foundations of mathematics. In the years following, this was overshadowed by the foundational scemes of Hilbert's nitary consistency program and Brouwer's intuitionistic redevelopment of mathematics. In fact, nor long after his own venture, Weyl became a convert to Brouwerian intuitionism and critized his old teachers program. Over the years, though, he became more and more pessimistic about the practical possibilities of reworking mathematics along intuitionistic lines, and pointed to the value of his own early foundational works. Weyl's work "Das Kontinuum" has come to be recognized for its importence as the opening chapter in the actual development of predicative mathematics, whose extent has been plumbed both mathematically and logically since the 1960'ties."       Charles A. Lindbergh Photograph Signed to an Aviator/Hero of World War I. Before the U.S. got involved in World War I, Alan F. Winslow served with the legendary Lafayette Escadrille in France. In 1918, now an officer in the U.S. Army's air service, he and Douglas Cambell shot down the first two German airplanes to fall victim to American aviators with General Pershing's expeditionary forces. On August 13, 1918, Winslow was shot down and reported killed in action over France. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. At war's end, he was discovered in a German hospital where he had been treated after surviving the crash but losing his arm. After the war, he became assistant chief of Pan American Airways' foreign department. In 1928, a year after his historic flight, Lindbergh became a technical advisor to Pan American Airways, a relationship that would prove long-lasting. While there, he became acquinted with Winslow. An 9 by 12 inch photograph of Lindbergh circa 1928-1932, inscribed and signed "To Mr. and Mrs. Alan F. Winslow, sincerely, Charles A. Lindbergh." The photograph can be approximately dated because Winslow's luck finally ran out in 1933, when he died at age 37 in a fall from a third-floor hotel window.

Overall an excellent copy in the fragile wrappers, rarely seen in such fine condition. Internally some minor brownspotting throughout, due to the paper-quality. With the ownership signature of J.B. Dumont deted "Sept. '21" to title-page and his stamp on half-title. 445 pp.. The rare first edition of Bloch's first major work, "The Spirit of Utopia", an expressionalist main work, which attempts to unite Marxism with Jewish-Christian messianism.The hugely influential German philosopher Ernst Bloch (1885-1977) was born as the son of Jewish parents in Ludwigshafen. He studied philosophy, physics, German and music in Munich and Würzburg and later became a main figure in Neomarxism. His first book, "Geist der Utopie" was written while Bloch was in exile in Switzerland during the First World War, and in this seminal work we find the cornerstones of his later so influential philosophy. In the "Spirit of Utopia", Bloch unites Marxism Jewish-Christian messianism by the common utopian element of both views: Hope, and faith in the fact that the world will and can become a better place. Bloch here set out to defend the attempts of humankind throughout history to create a humane world order, against the determinist socialism that viewed socialism as the inevitable result of history. With Marx and with the love and morality of religion, Bloch places man (that thinks of the common good) at the centre of his thinking as well as the metaphysical ideas of that which is not yet, but which can become. And thus he creates the spirit of utopia, due to which man can make the world a better place. This massive work of art begins with the powerful words: "What now? It is enough. Now we have to begin. Life has been put in our hands. In itself it has already become empty long ago. It staggers senselessly around, but we stand firm, and thus we want to be its Faustus and its ends." ("Wie nun? Es ist genug. Nun haben wir zu beginnen. In unsere Hände ist das Leben gegeben. Für sich selber ist es längst schon leer geworden. Es taumelt sinnlos hin und her, aber wir stehen fest, und so wollen wir ihm seine Faust und seine Ziele werden.") (P.9).The work was viewed as attacking the traditional Marxism of the time, and thus it was very controversial but also became hugely influential in the development of social liberation. Bloch is now considered one of the most undogmatic Marxists of the past century, and he influenced later political and philosophical thinkers enormously. Adorno himself cited this text of Bloch as having been transformative for his intellectual life, and as stated on the wrapper of the English translation, "When this work was first published, it had a profound effect on major thinkers and artists in Weimar Germany. A poetical philosophical treatise with unusual insights into culture and political commentary, Bloch' s book laid the groundwork for thinkers like Adorno and Benjamin." (Jack Zipes, University of Minnesota).This rare highly expressionist work consists of 445 pages of non-dogmatic strongly expressionistic and very influential recipes on and analyses of how man does and should behave in the humane world. A few tears to extremities and some fading. 24 pp. (= pp. 1-24).. Exceedingly rare and interesting first edition (in Russian). Early and elaborate description of Tsiolkovski's famous, huge transport dirigible. He is the inventor of the all-metal dirigible, which, in contrast to all other dirigibles at the time, would not be inflammable and which would be albe to keep the gas inside it; he found it possible to heat the hydrogen artificially, thus providing the dirigible with constant and perfect vertical maneuverability. No other dirigibles than his could be controlled by man.As T. in 1919 became a member of the Socialist Academy (later cooperated in the USSR Academy of Science), recognition and money enabled him to publish a much larger quantity of articles and books than he had done before. Everything by T. published before 1918 was paid for by himself; his modest salary only allowed him to pay for few copies of each, and four times as many of his articles, booklets and books were published after 1918 as in all the years before; each one after 1918 was likewise issued in a much greater number. "During a period of 26 years before the revolution his publications numbered less than 50." (Collected Works, NASA, 1951, I; p. X). This together with the fact that his work was not recognized and his experiments discredited, means that probably very few copies were preserved. His early works are thus of the greatest rarity. "Like all the pre-1918 papers by Tsiolkovsky, which were printed on his own expense in very small numbers only, that virtually have disappeared and the re-occurrence of one of them very remarkable." (Catalogue 282, Interlibrum Vaduz). Being the father of the all-metal dirigible aerostat with changeable volume and gas heating, his technical foresight was greatly in advance of the level of industrial development at the time. He came up with a number of entirely new ideas concerning dirigible design. He set out to develop a dirigible that would be safe as well as fast, up until then the dirigibles in use were neither. He wanted to ensure a longer flight-time, and was certain this could not be attained with the fabric envelopes in use at the time, -they leaked gas, lost hight and couldn't stay aloft for long at a time. Besides that they were insecure due to fire-hazard and not sufficiently strong. As the very first, T. developed the idea of an all-metal envelope that was capable of altering size, - the "breathing" metal envelope. "Tsiolkovskiy's ideas found no support either in Russia or abroad. His ideas were dozens of years ahead of the science and technology of his time. The subsequent development of the technology of dirigible construction shows that Tsiolkovskiy's ideas were adopted by many authors who, however, treated them as recent discoveries, without mentioning the name of Konstantin Eduardovich." (Collected Works, 1959, III: p. 11-12). "Forty years of experimenting were needed to produce concepts that had already been expressed by K.E. Tsiolkovkiy, while aeronautics was still in the cradle." (Collected Works, 1959, III: p. 17). With the invention of the all-metal dirigible T. has proved to be ahead of both contemporary scientists and inventors as well as of his time. "His work is now a shining beacon in science, attracting the attention of the scientists and designers called upon to provide mankind with a reliable transport dirigible." (Collected Works, 1959, III: p. 26).The father of modern rocketry, Konstantin Eduardovich Tsiolkovski (1857-1935), is probably most widely known for his works on rocket propulsion, however his contributions to several fields of science have been immense and of exceedingly seminal character. Deafened at the age of nine and as a consequence thereof unable to go to school, he was forced to learn everything on his own hand. His father, a forester, was fond of scientific experiments, and though not wealthy, he had books on science and natural history. Tsiolkovski began by reading all books he could find on these subjects and as a consequence was able to construct quite complicated devices for measuring distances and many other things. Having seen how gifted his son was, his father sent him to Moscow, where Tsiolkovski spend all three years in libraries, receiving no teaching but his own, but still succeeding in taking a degree in physics from the university. T. can thus be seen as a purely self-taught man. After Moscow he settled in the small city of Borovskoye, where he taught physics at a school, spending all his spare time conducting experiments and writing about them. He devoted his intellect mainly to three scientific problems of the greatest importance at the time: The aeroplane, the (long-range) rocket and the all metal dirigible. Self-taught as he was and unable to come in touch with new publications in his fields of interest, he began with nothing and made all necessary calculations himself. Calculations and experiments were always at the base of his scientific works, and no conclusions were derived from intuition and guesswork. He was the first in the world to solve numerous problems concerning his three main interests, but unable to be recognized by the tsar-regime and considered, at best, a dreamer and a utopian, the struggle for his inventions was long and hard. Aged 24 he was the first in the world to formulate the possibility of applying the principle of reactive motion for flight in a vacuum, thus presenting a simple plan for a spaceship. He established the possibility of space travel by means of rockets, and is thus called the father of rocketry. He is also called the father of the all-metal dirigible. He is the first to propose and state that liquid fuel is necessary for spaceflight. He was the first in the world to make calculations for the air-jet and turbo-prop-planes, and it is in his works we find the most complete elaboration of the theory of rocket propulsion for many years to come. "In his works on rocket dynamics Tsiolkovsky, the first in the history of science, calculated the efficiency of the rocket and pointed out the advantages of rocket motors at high velocities." (Kosmodemyansky, Moscow, 1956, p. 69). T. saw it as necessary step for mankind to explore and inhabit outer space and nothing could prevent him from working on the possibilities of this; in short, among many other things, we owe to him the fundamental principles of rocket dynamics.After the Revolution T. became a member of the Academy, was allotted a personal pension in 1921, and became able to devote himself entirely to his scientific work. Now his contemporaries finally saw him as the founder of a new domain of human knowledge, a new science, he was, and he was awarded the Red Banner of Labour Order for outstanding services to his country

Endpapers are lightly foxed and outer edges of untrimmed pages are browned. Outer vellum covers are a little yellowed on edges and on spine, rear bottom left corner has small crease, top edges of pages are gold, this is dull and worn away in places,some light marking and a little dusty from age. Blatch is credited with reviving & modernizing a suffrage movement which, by the beginning of the 20th century, was listless & flagging; she is also credited with motivating its evolution from a mostly middle & upper class movement to one which exhibited a concern for rights of working women, primarily by her 1907 launching of the Equality League of Self- Supporting Women which held open-air meetings & inaugurated the first suffrage parades. Blatch's style was radical in nature, combining a militant civil disobedience with political activism. The synergy generated her personal energy, daring & political savvy spurred the Suffrage movement on, aiding it in achieving its goal of enfranchising American women with the 1920 passage of the Constitution's 19th Amendment. With the coming of WWI, Blatch directed her formidable personality & energies to aiding the war effort, and this book was written in such a spirit- it describes the European female contribution to fighting the Hun, & exhorts their American counterparts to do no less [NAW, Vol. I]. . Peter Kristian Prytz (1851-1929), to whom the work is inscribed, was an important physicist of the generation before Bohr. He did immense work to better the conditions of the teaching of physics at the Polytechnic Institute in Copenhagen, where Bohr studied for many years and where he later became a teacher. Prytz introduced the teaching of experimental physics here and fought for more space, more apparatus, more money for teaching assistance and more time for teaching. Thus, he played a great role in the physics-environment in Copenhagen both during Bohr's years as a student and as a teacher.Most importantly, it was Prytz who (in 1907) attracted the necessary money for the institute which enabled him to create the physical laboratory that constituted the foundation of Danish experimental physics, the field of which Bohr became professor in 1916 (till 1920 - the years during which he was working on the "On the Quantum Theory of the Line Spectra").Rosenfeld, Bohr-Bibliography, 15

First editions, author's off-prints (with "Separate Copy" printed to front wrappers), presentation-copies, of the first two parts of Bohr's seminal work "On the Quantum Theory of the Line-Spectra" (which appeared in three parts and which was never finished, the third part of which, published 4 years later, is almost never found in presentation-sets), in which Bohr gave his first clear presentation of his groundbreaking "correspondence principle": "Which would play a pivotal role in the later development of atomic theory and its transformation into quantum mechanics." (Kragh, Quantum Generations, p. 56). It eventually became a cornerstone in the quantum mechanics formulated by Heisenberg and Schrödinger. "There was rarely in the history of physics a comprehensive theory which owed so much to one principle as quantum mechanics owed to Bohr's correspondence principle" (Jammer 1966, p. 118). The evolution of quantum theory is divided into two distinct periods; from 1900 to 1925, usually referred to as the period with the old quantum theory still grounded in classical physics and the second period with quantum mechanics from 1925 onwards. The general rules of quantum mechanics are very successful in describing objects on an atomic level. But macroscopic systems are accurately described by classical theories like classical mechanics and classical electrodynamics. If quantum mechanics were to be applicable to macroscopic objects, there must be some limit in which quantum mechanics reduces to classical mechanics. Bohr's correspondence principle demands that classical physics and quantum physics give the same answer when the systems become large. "A major tool he developed for dealing with quantum problem, [...], was the correspondence principle, which establishes links between predictions of the classical theory and expectations for the quantum theory." (Pais, Niels Bohr's Times, p. 20.). In this sense, the correspondence principle is not only an exceedingly important methodological principle, it also represents the transition to quantum mechanics and modern physics in general and it became the cornerstone of Bohr's philosophical interpretation of quantum mechanics which later would be closely tied to his thesis of complementarity and to the Copenhagen interpretation. The renowned Danish physicist and meteorologist Dan la Cour (1876-1942), was the son of the great Poul la Cour (1846-1908), who is considered the "Danish Edison". Dan la Cour was the assistant of Niels Bohr's father, Christian Bohr, and a well known scientist. From 1903, he was head of the department of the Meteorological Institute, and from 1923 leader thereof. From 1908 he was Associate Professor at the Polytechnic College. His original scientific works are highly respected, as are his original apparati for measuring earth magnetism which are considered highly valuable. "His original intelligence, which in many ways resemble that of his father, also bore fruit in his patenting of various inventions: the "Pyknoprobe", developed to quickly determine the different layers of the sea; a use of termite in quickly heating food and drinks out in the open under unfavourable weather conditions." He wrote a number of important and esteemed works and was member of the Danish Scientific Academy as well as many prominent international scientific commissions of meteorology and geophysics (i.e. president of the International Geodetical and Geophysical Union). One of her later tales, it is one of the few tales for which the first edition title page is undated. Much has been made of the presence or absence of the "N" in "LONDON" on the title page (this copy does have the "N"). The first printing, which was done in 1918, had some copies with the "N" and some without it; it has been surmised, for example by Linder, that the first copies off the press lacked the "N", meaning that it was added during the print run; however, it is just as possible that the "N" dropped off during the print run. Either way, which copies were the first to be printed has no bearing on which copies were the first to be published (issued to the public). This collection of Swinburne verses written for and about children was published near the end of the four years of horror known as the "War to End All Wars," and its innocent subject matter--not exactly what the bohemian Swinburne was best known for--combined with Rackham's sweet drawings of babies and toddlers constituted just what a war-weary public was seeking. Writer Edmond Gosse told Rackham, "This volume will not merely be the best book of the present art-season, but a joy to all sensitive people for years and years to come." He died without having found occasion to carry out this plan, and he left no directions with regard to the way in which it ought to be done… One reason why Swinburne never brought out such a collection was his failure to find an artist who could interpret to his satisfaction the simplicity and freshness of his verses. We are fortunate in having secured, in Mr. Arthur Rackham, one whose delicate and romantic fancy is in sensitive harmony with Swinburne's, and who understands, no less than he did, how "Heaven lies about us in our infancy." Binding in good-, interior in very good condition. Enchanting collection of poems by English poet and novelist Algernon Charles Swinburne (1837-1909). Frst illustrated Rackham edition of this work.

      Orlando, Fla.: Robinson. 1918. Panoramic photograph. Approximately 38" x 8". Two tears in one margin, rolled with some waviness, slight fading at the extremities, overall very good. Some contemporary notes on the verso indicating where the writer was in the picture. The photo depicts a baseball game in the distance surrounded by a host of soldiers, many on horseback. The Miller Huggins-managed 1918 Yankees included Roger Peckinpaugh, Wally Pipp, Bob Shawkey, Dazzy Vance, and Frank "Home Run" Baker. .

      Cyril Beaumont London: Cyril Beaumont, 1918. Octavo. (iii), 16, (1+16)ff., frenchfold. From an edition of fifty copies, this is one of ten printed on chine and signed by the artist. This is the story of Little Red Riding Hood, with woodcut text and illustrations by Belgian artist Edgard Tijtgat. Sixteen illustrations, hors texte, appear in two states: color and bistre. Tijtgat’s illustrations are bold and expressionistic in style, and also deceptively innocent: things do not end well for Red Riding Hood in Charles Perrault's moral and more sinister version of the tale. Floral motif on the endpapers and repeated throughout the book. Tijtgat is associated with the Brabant Fauvists, a Belgian movement focused on pure, bold colors and simplified lines, similar to the Fauves led by Henri Matisse in France. During World War I, Tijtgat set up his printshop in England, where this book was published. Light foxing to upper margins of a few pages, some faint offsetting from prints, short closed tear to spine foot. Overall a fine copy in color-printed pictorial boards.

Edizione originale della rivista d'arte di lusso, alternativa alle avanguardie, nazionalista ed estremamente variegata, che fu pilastro culturale per la-i-Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes-/i- di Parigi del 1925. Fondata e diretta dal critico nonché funzionario Henry Lapauze (1865-1925), ebbe periodicità mensile (1918-1931), infine sporadica fino a spegnersi definitivamente (1932-1939). Tra i tanti vi scrissero: George Waldemar, Louis Réau, Lionello Venturi, Ambroise Vollard, Arsène Alexandre (editorialista), Guillaume Janneau (che tenne la rubrica -i-Le Mouvement Moderne-/i-), Louis Vauxcelles, Jean Cassou, Paul-Sentenac. Bella, interessante rivista. Esemplare molto buono.
