        AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED

Mountain Cottage, Middleton by Wirksworth, Derby. 26 July 1918.. One and 1/2 pages, in ink, on recto and verso of half-sheet (200 x 146 mm) of ruled notepaper. Right margin a bit ragged where sheet was halved, a few corner creases, small pinholes in upper left corner, otherwise very good. In an attractive batik paper over boards folder, and folding half morocco case. To "Dear Mrs. Henry", i.e. Nancy Henry, an editor at Oxford University Press who was involved in the editorial work on Lawrence's pseudonymously published MOVEMENTS IN EUROPEAN HISTORY (1921), and it has been suggested, was an early reader of sections of STUDIES IN CLASSIC AMERICAN LITERATURE (1923). Lawrence writes: "I send you the first three chapters. They are perhaps rather long. The others, some of them, will be much shorter. I wanted to make a serious reader that would convey the true historic impression to children who are beginning to grasp realities. We should introduce the deep, philosophic note into education: deep, philosophic reverence. I've no doubt your people won't like this style. I shan't mind if they don't want me to go on. But please tell me your own full opinion ... I wonder what Vere [i.e. H. Vere Collins, who suggested the project] has decided. " He touches on other matters in conclusion ("...my cottage is let ... I haven't any news yet about poems. It is always so slow....") and signs: "Greetings from us both D.H. Lawrence." Published in the Huxley edition of Lawrence's LETTERS (pp.450-1) but omitted from the Moore edition.

Their accounts heretofore have been brief statements of bare accomplishments, without explanation of the manner in which results were attained. Highlights of this collection of 16 postcards and covers with letters include two rare Treat 'Em Rough envelopes, one rare Treat 'Em Rough letterhead, one rare Tank Corps Camp Colt envelope, one rare AEF Christmas package mailing coupon, and two scarce American Red Cross 'postal' handstamps. Private Fletcher's dog tags are included as well. Fletcher was drafted in March of 1918, and by early May he had reported to Camp Colt, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania for training in the soon to be formed Tank Corps commanded by Major Dwight D. Eisenhower. Upon deployment, he was assigned to C Company, 302nd Tank Battalion, a unit equipped with heavy British Mark VI tanks. In France, the 302nd trained in Langre (near Bourg) at the AEF's Tank Center commanded by Captain George S. Patton. Following the Meuse-Argonne offensive, Fletcher was reassigned to the 344th Tank Battalion, which was equipped with light French Renault tanks. Censorship was apparently very strict in the Tank Corps as Fletcher's letters are mostly requests for additional mail from home and provide little insight into unit operations. . Letters. Very Good.

MOBILIZING WOMAN-POWER. With a Foreword by Theodore Roosevelt

New York:: The Womans Press,. 1918.. Crown 8vo. 1st edition. 195 pp. Appendix ('Documents Used in Women's War-Work in England and France').. Light brown vertically-ribbed cloth stamped in blue, with a decorative frame surrounding the front board title stamping.. A solid VG copy (spine slightly darkened, with blue lettering a bit. dull/minor extremity wear).. Blatch the daughter of suffragist Elizabeth Cady Stanton, who followed in her mother's footsteps by also becoming a leader in the late 19th/early 20th C. women's movement, a writer and an advocate for labor reform. Blatch is credited with reviving & modernizing a suffrage movement which, by the beginning of the 20th century, was listless & flagging; she is also credited with motivating its evolution from a mostly middle & upper class movement to one which exhibited a concern for rights of working women, primarily by her 1907 launching of the Equality League of Self- Supporting Women which held open-air meetings & inaugurated the first suffrage parades. Blatch's style was radical in nature, combining a militant civil disobedience with political activism. The synergy generated her personal energy, daring & political savvy spurred the Suffrage movement on, aiding it in achieving its goal of enfranchising American women with the 1920 passage of the Constitution's 19th Amendment. With the coming of WWI, Blatch directed her formidable personality & energies to aiding the war effort, and this book was written in such a spirit- it describes the European female contribution to fighting the Hun, & exhorts their American counterparts to do no less [NAW, Vol. I]. . Illustrated with a Frontis & 12 inserted plates.

        Affaire Bola-Pacha, 68 Croquis d'Audience par Sem

1918. Sem [Gorsat (Goursat), Georges (1863-1934)]. Affaire Bola-Pacha: 68 Croquis d'Audience par Sem. [Paris: S.n., c. 1918]. 68 lithographic images on 24 sheets and a sheet of captions in a printed wrapper housed in a printed folder. 12-1/2" x 10." From a signed edition of 300 on Arches paper, this number 283. Light soiling and edgewear to outer folder, a few minor tears along fold lines, short minor tear to spine of inner folder, light stain to caption sheet, plates fine. * The Bolo Pasha affair involved a French traitor, Paul Bolo, who convinced the Egyptian Khedive (Viceroy), Abbas Hilmi, to sponsor an anti-war movement in France through the press using from German sources. (Granted the title Pasha by the Khedive, Bolo renamed himself Bolo Pasha.) Convicted of treason, he was executed by a firing squad in April 1918. Sem's caricatures portray the judge, defendant, witnesses and judges at various points in the trial. Gorsat, or Goursat, was a French caricaturist and illustrator active from the late nineteenth century to 1934. His lasting fame rests on his depictions of French ruling class and French high society during the Belle Epoque.         THE TALE OF JOHNNY TOWN-MOUSE

1918. hardcover. Potter, Beatrix. THE TALE OF JOHNNY TOWN-MOUSE. London: Frederick Warne and Co., n.d. [1918]. Original light brown paper-covered boards with pictorial onlay. <p>First Edition of this tale which Beatrix Potter adapted from Aesop&#39;s "The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse"; she dedicated it "To Aesop in the shadows." One of her later tales, it is one of the few tales for which the first edition title page is undated.</p> <p>Much has been made of the presence or absence of the "N" in "LONDON" on the title page (this copy <i>does</i> have the "N"). The first printing, which was done in 1918, had some copies with the "N" and some without it; it has been surmised, for example by Linder, that the first copies off the press lacked the "N", meaning that it was added during the print run; however, it is just as possible that the "N" dropped off during the print run. Either way, which copies were the first to be printed has no bearing on which copies were the first to be published (issued to the public).</p> <p><u>This is a fine copy</u> (one tiny hint of wear at a corner, but otherwise as nice as one could hope for). Linder p. 430; Quinby 25.</p> BOOKS WRITTEN BY WOMEN, CHILDREN&#39;S / JUVENILE (Sumner & Stillman Code:12124)

The runner is very scarce, (no copy with the ?advertising runner? in the Frohnsdorff collection). The front flap lists 3 Potter titles and 2 Painting Books, the rear flap lists the Bookshelf and Peter Rabbit's Slippers. 30,000 copies of the first printing ot this title were published and the first copies off the press lack the ?N? on London on the title page, in this copy the ?N? is present but the inscription ?Xmas 1918? indicates a first printing as the second printing did not appear until June 1919.
