Zhao Huishu yin pu/ Zhao Huishu yin cun (1st set)

???? (Xi Ling Yin She)/ Xiling Seal Art Society, ?? (Hangzhou) 1917 - Quarto. 11.5x7". Unpaginated. Dark blue cloth portfolio, with bone clasps, and a white paper label on the front cover with black lettering. Silver calligraphic lettering on the spine. The portfolio houses 4 softcover string-tied volumes in dark blue paper wrappers, with black lettering over white paper labels on the front covers. Softcovers with black lettering along the bottom edge of the book blocks. These are the first 4 parts (the first set) of a total of 8 volumes published, collecting samples of the world-class seals created by renowned Chinese calligrapher, artist and seal carver Zhao Zhiqian (also known as Zhao Huishu). The collection contains a total of 128 pages of seals, printed in red and black on rice paper. Zhao's seal work has been noted by critics for its lack of sharply defined lines from knife carvings, and conversely his interest in the flow of ink on the seals, creating a smoother style, in more of an attempt to emulate the look and feel of calligraphy. The front of the first softcover volume contains b/w collotype reproductions of large-scale lithographic text by Zhao, and illustrated lithographic portrait of the artist. The first part contains prologue text by ?? Yeh Ming and ?? Ding Ren, two of the four founders of the Xiling Seal Art Society. Portfolio with rubbing to extremities and along edges, as well as to to the paper label. Missing the bottom bone claps. Some smudging to covers. Interior with some light rubbing to hinges and some damp staining to the interior boards. Wrappers with some light rubbing, creasing, chipping and/or sunning to edge, corners, and paper label. Some of the string-tied bindings are slightly loose. Interiors of the softcover volumes with some light sporadic sunning, damp staining, foxing and/or smudges throughout. Images mostly unaffected. Volume 2 with part of the string missing. Library inks stamps along the top of the book blocks of all volumes Portfolio in good-, wrappers in good to good+, interiors in good- to very good condition overall. *Zhao Zhiqian (1829-1884) was an acclaimed Chinese calligrapher, painter and seal carver of the late Qing Dynasty period. His work had a huge influence on later famous artists such as Wu Changshuo and Qi Baishi. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Rech' Lenina po agrarnomu voprosu. (Proiznesena 22-go maia 1917 goda na Vserossiiskom Sovete Krest'ianskikh Deputatov) [Lenin's speech on the agrarian question. Held on May 22, 1917 on the All-Russian Congress of Peasant Deputies].

Smolensk, Izdanie Smol. Komiteta R.S.D.R.P., 1917. - 24 pp. Original printed wrappers. 8vo. Scarce provincial edition of a pamphlet authored and published between May and July 1917, when the Bolsheviks attempted further to prepare the impoverished peasants for the second step of the Revolution. The speech contained Lenin's theses formulated during the April Congress of the Russian Social-Democratic Labor Party, during which it was decided that complete nationalization of the land was necessary. The pamphlet was printed in large numbers and distributed in rural areas and among front soldiers, and played an important role in convincing Russian peasants of the Bolshevik cause.         A Glance at the Life of Ira Aldridge

R.L. Pendleton, Washington, [DC] 1917 - First edition. Small octavo. 24pp. Stapled beige printed wraps. Frontispiece portrait of Aldridge in the role of Othello. A few short chips at the edges of the slightly oversize wrappers, else very good or better. A very scarce early work on Ira Aldridge, a pre-eminent African-American Shakespearean actor, who was honored with a memorial plaque at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre at Stratford-upon-Avon, and who gained international recognition on the London and European stages. Although Aldridge made his debut in New York City in the role of Rolla in "Pizarro," he found opportunities for a black actor very limited in the United States. In 1824, he emigrated to England, and attended the University of Glasgow for a time. He returned to London in 1825 and made his debut as Othello at the Royal Theatre in 1826. According to this sketch: "The better critics agree that Mr. Aldridge was one of the greatest Othellos. Edmund Kean (the renowned English actor) supported a like opinion by choosing him as Othello to his Iago at Belfast, Ireland." Aldridge continued to work in England, Ireland, and on the continent for the next four decades until his death in Poland in 1927. This brief sketch of his career by Peyton highlights Aldridge's African background (disputed by later biographers), the prejudices he faced, and the many roles he portrayed. Fountain Peyton was a graduate of Howard Law School Class of 1890 and was involved in the Board of Education in Washington, DC for a number of years. Additionally, R.L. Pendleton is listed as an African-American printer in period directories. Exceptionally uncommon combination: a biography of a black actor by a black author and published by a black printer. OCLC lists four copies (Emory, Northwestern, University of Illinois, and the Library of Congress). [Attributes: First Edition]

Archive of 71 Russian Postcards Commemorating the RUSSIAN REVOLUTION

Russia - A nice Archive of 71 Russian Postcards Commemorating the RUSSIAN REVOLUTION, dated from the late 1920s into the mid 1930s. Almost all of the Postcards bear color illustrations and all are in Very Good + or better condition. The Russian Revolution took place primarily in two stages during 1917. Thereafter, groups competed for power. As noted by Wikipedia:Soon after, civil war erupted among the "Reds" (Bolsheviks), the "Whites" (counter-revolutionaries), the independence movements and the non-Bolshevik socialists. It continued for several years, during which the Bolsheviks defeated both the Whites and all rival socialists and thereafter reconstituted themselves as the Communist Party. In this way, the Revolution paved the way for the creation of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) in 1922.An EXCELLENT ARCHIVE of Postcards COMMEMORATING ONE OF THE MOST NOTABLE AND IMPORTANT PERIODS IN WORLD HISTORY.

Special Edition / Gazette des Ardennes / The Russian Disaster. July 25th 1917 (WWI Aerial Dropped Propaganda, Russian Revolution, Psychological Warfare)

German Army [?], Charleville, France [?] 1917 - A large and unlikely trench warfare battlefront survivor, found in 1917 ". hung on British barbed wire entanglements among many other copies." and quite possibly, surviving in only a single copy - with no record of this "Special Edition" found available in the trade or institutional holdings [nor in Aerial Propaganda and the Wartime Occupation of France, 1914-18 by Bernard Wilkin]. Broadside printed recto only in black ink onto thin wartime paper, 23 x 16-3/4 inches wide with "Special Edition / Gazette des Ardennes / The Russian Disaster." as a header. Linen backed as found, with a pinned note attached "This was hung on British barbed wire entanglements amongst many other copies. It was mounted for preservation. 1917" and signed on verso in the same hand "Capt. C.S. Hunt", who may be the same Captain C.S. Hunt that was an airship captain and also became Commanding Officer of the RAF East Fortune Base (established as a fighter and airship airfield in 1915) in July, 1916 (see "Commanding Officers" in Kingsnorth Airship Station: In Defence of the Nation by Tina Bilbé). Hunt's interest in preserving this unusual (French language copies of the Gazette des Ardennes newspaper are common) piece of aerial dropped propaganda would make sense, as he would have been aware of and likely engaged in, similar active propaganda operations for the Allies. Broadside is toned and fragile with soil, tears and small losses, horizontal and vertical fold lines, some delamination from linen backing apparent. Will be shipped flat. Interesting for many reasons, this large propaganda leaflet appears at first glance to be published by the Germans in occupied France "[German] Propaganda specially destined for the French is more effective. The chief effort is the Gazette des Ardennes, a weekly newspaper written in French and with occasionally an illustrated supplement. It is distributed both by aeroplane and by balloon. It is cleverly conducted, containing much inflammatory political matter, ex parte statements as to the progress of the war, attacks on the English, news of individual French prisoners, lists of French and Belgians alleged to have been killed by the action of Allied Airmen. From a propagandist point of view, it is much more unscrupulous and probably more effective than our Courrier, ." THE AERIAL DISTRIBUTION OF PROPAGANDA TO THE ENEMY : A Report by Captain P. Chalmers Mitchell. M.I.7b(4), 23rd February 1918." But, considering the Russian angle wherein "The Germans gave Lenin transit from Switzerland to Finland in the expectation that Lenin would enter Russia, commit high treason against the Czar, and take Russia out of the war. He did so, but the engulfing wave of Communist revolution contributed to the defeat of Germany as well." (both quotes from psywar dot org.) It could also have been published as "Black Propaganda", a misrepresention or a forgery meant to confuse. The final word however, is from a published expert's longer article "This 25 July 1917 copy of the German newspaper was found "caught in barbed wire along with many other copies." according to a pinned note signed by a Captain C.S. Hunt. These newspapers were usually written in French but for some unknown reason this one is written in English. One can see that the revolution has started and instead of fighting, the Russian troops are debating and walking away from the front. The commanders have decided to shoot the deserters. The newspaper concludes that it is not the men who are at fault, but their leaders who have sent them into battle to uselessly die." SGM Herbert A. Friedman (Ret.) psywarrior dot com.

Spine slightly faded, tiny nicks to tips, mild partial toning to endpapers, one gutter cracking within, otherwise clean and fresh, a smart copy in excellent condition, with a superb example of the dust jacket, a little spine-tanned, some loss at the head and smaller chips and closed tears to corners and edges. First edition, with the rare dust jacket, and an autograph letter signed from graves laid-in discussing the book; one of 1,000 copies printed. Graves writes, "This was the first book of mine published in the USA. I wrote it during the First World War as an infantry captain, between the ages of 19 and 22. My rank was not due to merit, but to the extraordinarily heavy casualties among officers in trench-fighting. I have kept very few of these poems in my collected work; but one has to make a start somewhere and at least they were not imitative of my elders or contemporaries". The letter is signed and dated 21 November 1956, and folded into an envelope to Fraser Drew, professor of English at the State University College for Teacher, Buffalo, New York, with a Spanish stamp affixed to it. The book also bears the bookplate of R. N. Green-Armytage, who was doctor to Graves's eldest daughter Jenny in the 1930s. Fairies and Fusiliers, Graves's third book, is dedicated to the Royal Welch Fusiliers and contains some of the author's most memorable war poems. Higginson & Williams A3a; Reilly p. 146.         Autograph letter signed to Sylvia Lynd

two pages (approximately 130 words) 23 November 1917, Cuala Industries Ltd., Churchtown, Dundrum, Co. Dublin - To her friend, the Irish nationalist poet, essayist, short-story writer and novelist: "My dear Sylvia, I have sent you the book [the copy of her brother W.B. Yeats's The Wild Swans at Coole - published in the same month - in the Lynds' library when it was disposed of at auction in 2010]. Please thank Mr. [Robert] Lynd very much for the nice little notice of it in The Daily News - he worked it into the column so well. Since that we have got a good many orders from quite fresh people. So it has already borne fruit - I am sending you our newest illuminated poem - I wish I could send it framed - but the difficulties of sending glass is [sic] great now - I am getting boxes. We haven't shown this poem anywhere yet so you are getting the very first." She inquires after her correspondents' health and mentions an acquaintance. With an autograph superscription to recto "We are also doing "The Pity of Love" [i.e. her brother's poem, as Cuala Broadside N.56]." Signed in full. Folded for mailing and a little foxed and creased but in very good condition. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Eigenh. Brief mit U.

Vitznau, 30. April [um 1917/18]. - 4 SS. 4to.

[Photo Album]: Utah, Idaho, and Montana

1917. Very Good. Oblong quarto. String-tied buff-colored flexible paper wrappers with "Snaphots" embossed on the cover. 139 mostly sepia-toned snapshot images (plus one real photo postcard), in a variety of sizes, but probably the majority approximately 4.25" x 3.25". Different formats, but mostly gelatin silver images, both matte and glossy. Two or three images are lacking from original mounts, two others are laid in, but certainly unpillaged. A few have been affixed rather close to the margin resulting in creases or in a few cases some damage, modest fading to some images but overall very good. A good number of the images are captioned with places and in many cases dates. The images are mostly from Utah, Montana, and Idaho. Specific places include Salt Lake, Emigration Canyon in snow, and the Pinecrest Inn in Utah; Snake River, Butte, and Three Sisters Mountains in Montana; and the Saint Joseph River in Idaho. Also included are a few pictures from California or Arizona. The pictures depict a dog-loving family interested in outdoor recreation and sporting, and include both men and women outdoors with guns, fishing tackle or strings of caught fish, and many images of sporting dogs posed or cavorting with owners. An interesting early 20th Century album with outdoor images.
