        Winston S. Churchill, The Official Biography, Companion Volume IV, Parts 1, 2 & 3, January 1917 - November 1922

These three volumes accompany the fourth volume of Churchill's Official Biography and cover January 1917 to November 1922. Here is a truly fine set - the finest we've offered. All three volumes appear unread, in remarkably clean and bright dust jackets. The red cloth bindings are all immaculate - clean, tight, and square with bright gilt and virtually now wear with the exception of a few tiny corner bumps. The contents of all three volumes are crisp, clean, bright, and tight with no spotting and no inscriptions. The red stained top edges retain strong, vivid color entirely free of any sunning. All three dust jackets are crisp, clean, and retain bright white color. No tears. No losses. There were two prices on the dust jacket flaps - an original introductory price and then a higher price specified after January 31st, 1978. Both prices are unclipped on all three dust jackets. The spine lettering of this edition proved highly vulnerable to sunning, often fading to nearly white. This set retains bright, clear, absolutely perfect spine lettering on all three volumes. The dust jackets are protected in removable, archival quality clear covers. Bibliographic reference: Zoller A302d.

I boken ingår 19 jaktessäer, huvudsakligen rörande jakter i Västernorrland, bl.a. skildras en björnjakt i Tåsjötrakten.

Pioneering the West 1846 to 1878: Major Howard Egan's Diary

Richmond, Utah: Howard R. Egan Estate, 1917. First edition.. Hardcover. Very good. 8vo. 302,(1)pp. Publisher's green cloth blocked in black on the spine and on the upper board with an image of a horse and rider under the title. Illustrated. Light wear to the edges and corners and with an old repair of a closed tear on the front free endpaper, not affecting the inscriptions, else a very good copy. With the following inscription on the front free endpaper: "The First Book sold: Bought by F. M. Lyman Jr." And further down: "This Book is a truthful narrative. 'Truth is stranger than fiction.' Error alone can bind us in chains. But 'the Truth will make us free.' W. M. Egan." Lyman was the son of Francis Marion Lyman (1840-1916), a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles as well as President of the Quorum (1903-1916). The younger Lyman, though, was a surveyor whose name still appears on map descriptions in Salt Lake City. Howard Egan was an early Mormon pioneer and one of the earliest Pony Express riders. The inscription seems to indicate that this is the first copy of the book sold, but it is in green cloth and thus a variant as Graff indicates that the earliest copies are in black cloth, later in brown. In 1942 William Egan compiled an index to the diary. Graff 1221; Howes E76; Flake/Draper 3121.

MY OBJECTS ARE To TAKE The STING OUT Of The SUBMARINE, Relieve the Mine of It's Punch, Yet be Economical and Practical

New York:. [1917. 1918. 1919].. 10-3/8" x 8". 1st edition. 9 parts in 1 volume (iii, [1 (blank), 38; 11, [1 (blank)]; 11, [1 (blank)]; 13, [3 (blank)]; ii, 20; [4]; 7, [1 (blank)]; ix, [1 (blank)], 88; [2], 38 pp). Part 8 with hand-inked word correction to p. 33.. Custom black full leather binding, rebacked, stamped in gilt as "Compliments of the Author". TEG. Original grey printed wrappers bound-in.. General binding wear. A VG copy of this rare argument for a system. offering a vessel protection against the rapidly developing maritime. threat.. Mr Bassford's concept was forwarded to the Secretary of the Navy, as well as the United States Shipping Board; there is evidence from the text that the 2 entities took seriously Mr Bassford's suggestions, and initiated steps to evaluate same, though today we find no hard evidence that the United States adopted Mr Bassford's recommendations, at least in any wide, systematic practice. At this juncture, barring discovery of evidence to the contrary, this volume remains one documenting an explored, but ultiimately abandoned, avenue of defense against the unseen submarine threat. NB. The OCLC entry [2cc: LC & US Naval History Center] notes 10 pamphlets in one volume, with a date span of 1917 - 1929. Given our copy contains 9, dated 1917 - 1919, and was presented by the author to the United States Shipping Board, Admiral H. H. Rousseau, Chairman, so presumed complete, we surmise if indeed a 10th pamphlet was published, it was issued in 1929. . 3 drawings in the 7th pamphlet.

Locked Out" in The Forge, Number Two

Colonial Press Philadelphia: Colonial Press, February, 1917. Square octavo. 52, (2)pp. Contains the first appearance of "Locked Out," which had only previously seen print in The Bouquet, a magazine compiled by Frost's children in 1914. This poem was not included in the first edition of Mountain Interval but was added to its contents for the 1930 Collected Poems (see Crane, A14). Little is known about The Forge; based on the "Editorial Flourish" that introduces this number, its editor presents a rather unusual take on its mission: The Forge, he says, "has no purpose and is beyond price," adding later that it is also "not dependent on subscribers or contributors." Given this particular stance, however potentially ironic, it would suggest that this magazine did not enjoy a long life. In 1950, Frost sent a copy of this issue to librarian and editor Edward Connery Lathem at Dartmouth with the suggestion that it be added to the collection of Frost that Lathem was building there. Frost closes a letter that he enclosed with that copy by noting "It's a rarety (sic) I think. One of the editors sent it to me lately." This is a very fine copy, likely untouched by the mail or a subscriber's hands.

ST. CUTHBERT'S COLLEGE, USHAW, DURHAM. The Seminary.

      W. Monkhouse, York. c1830.. Lithograph, size 24 x 12 inches (60 x 30cm). EXCESSIVELY RARE. From the collection of Nancy Spain (1917-1964) who inherited it from her father Lieutenant-Colonel G.R.B. Spain. The Colonel and his family lived in Jesmond, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and it was here the collection was assembled, the prints being acquired from dealers like J. Nield and R. Scott (Scotty of Darlington). Nancy - educated at Roedean and Journalist (Daily Express and News of the World) and broadcaster (Woman's Hour and My Word) - would move south at the beginning of WWII and stayed there. I was to purchase the prints in the West Country in 1989. Many of the prints in the collection are quite rare, one or two unique. This print is now very difficult to obtain because of the closure of antiquarian book, map and print shops up and down the land. Steel engraving superceded copper plate engraving between 1810-1820 because more prints could be taken, and finer detail to be had, from its harder surface. The image was etched on wax and the exposed steel bitten by acid. The craftsmanship was wonderful and the print offered here is an original from that process. In the 1880-1890s' photography was to eclipse steel engraving in book illustration. US$0

In: Les Bellets Russes a Paris. Représentations Exceptionelles avec le gracieux Concours des Artistes de M. Serge de Diaghilew.

Paris, Mai 1917. Folio. Original illustrated wrappers (drawing by André Marty on front and advertisements on back) in grey and red. Stapling a bit weak, so some leaves loosening. Slight browning to extremities. 20 leaves of photographic illustrations and 6 leaves of text in between. In all 26 ff.. Scarce original printing of this seminal avantgarde-publication, the May 1917 "Théatre du Chatelet"- publication that presents Diaghilev's "Ballets Russes" in Paris, being one of the most important publications in the history of modern art. It is here, in his presentation-article to "Parade" (the groundbreaking ballet by Jean Cocteau) - which was published simultaneously in the "Ballets Russes"-programme of May 1917 - that Apollinaire coins the term "surrealism" and thus lays the foundation for the seminal cultural movement that Bréton came to lead. The 20 leaves of photographic illustrations contain pictures of the actors and actresses, also in their spectacular avant-garde-costumes, Bakst's portrait of Leonide Massine, Picasso's portrait of Stavinski, Bakst's portrait of Picasso, Picasso and Massine in the ruins of Pompei, Picasso's drawings of a scene from "Parade" and of Massine, as well as several humorous advertisements. It is the 1917 ballet "Parade", originally presented for the first time in the present publication - and simultaneously in a separate publication devoted to Parade (also May 1917) - that marks Picasso's entry into the public and bourgeois institutions of ballet and theatre and presented Cubism on the stage for the first time. The present publication constitutes an outright revolution in the history of art, theatre, and ballet

The Curtiss Standard JN-4B Military Tractor Hand Book

Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Corporation. Buffalo. Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Corporation. 1917. Bound in imprinted green cloth over boards. Thin 8vo (5"x8"). The First Edition. Illustrated with diagrams, 3 of which are fold-outs,detailing the specs and assembly instructions for the airplane.Laid-into volume are two Request for Transportation receipts issued by the U.S. War Department and a period Morse Code Pocket Signal Disk. The Curtiss JN-4 "Jenny" was one of a series of "JN" biplanes built by the Curtiss Aeroplane Company of Hammondsport, New York, later the Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company. Although the Curtiss JN series (the common nickname was derived from "JN") was originally produced as a training aircraft for the U.S. Army, the "Jenny" continued post-World War I as a civil aircraft as it became the "backbone of American post-war [civil] aviation.Thousands of surplus Jennys were sold at bargain prices to private owners in the years after the War and became central to the barnstorming era that helped awaken America to civil aviation through much of the 1920s. The Curtiss JN-4 is possibly North America's most famous World War I aircraft. It was widely used during World War I to train beginning pilots, with an estimated 95% of all trainees having flown a JN-4. The U.S. version was called "Jenny", a derivation from its official designation. It was a twin-seat (student in front of instructor) dual control biplane. Its tractor prop and maneuverability made it ideal for initial pilot training with a 90 horsepower (67 kW) Curtiss OX-5 V8 engine giving a top speed of 75 miles per hour (121 km/h) and a service ceiling of 6,500 feet (2,000 m). The JN-4B was powered by an OX-2 piston engine, 76 built for the U.S. Army, nine for the U.S. Navy. The Jenny remained in service with the US Army until 1927. After World War I, thousands were sold on the civilian market, including one to Charles Lindbergh in May 1923 in which he then soloed. Surplus US Army aircraft were sold, some still in their unopened packing crates, for as little as $50, essentially "flooding" the market. With private and commercial flying in North America unhampered by regulations concerning their use, pilots found the Jenny's slow speed and stability made it ideal for stunt flying and aerobatic displays in the barnstorming era between the world wars, with the nearly identical Standard J-1 aircraft often used alongside it. Some were still flying into the 1930s. Small Blind embossed stamp of the State of California Bureau of Weights and Measures to lower corner of Front Free Endsheet and Title Page. A bit musty, else a Near Fine, bright, crisp copy unblemished by foxing or any other blemish to text or plates.

        APPLEY DAPPLY'S NURSERY RHYMES

1917. hardcover. Potter, Beatrix. APPLEY DAPPLY&#39;S NURSERY RHYMES. London: Frederick Warne and Co., n.d. [1917]. Original green-grey boards lettered in red, with front cover pictorial onlay. <p>First Edition (first or second printing, indistinguishable from each other, which came out in October and November 1917). The third printing did not come out until 1919 1920; it <i>is</i> distinguishable from the earlier two, because its front endpaper lists JOHNNY TOWN-MOUSE, which came out in 1918.</p> <p>Most of these rhymes are Beatrix Potter&#39;s own, but also included is "You know the old woman who lived in a shoe?". She first did illustrations for that rhyme as early as 1893, and she and Warne planned a volume of illustrated verse soon after PETER RABBIT made such a hit in 1901-1902. However it kept getting set aside for other volumes, and then Norman Warne died in 1905, and the project was dropped for a dozen years -- when in 1917 Fruing Warne asked her for another story and she did not have one. (Five years later there would be another volume of rhymes, CECILY PARSLEY&#39;S NURSERY RHYMES.)</p> <p>This is a very attractive, just-about-fine copy (fine except for light foxing on only the edges of the leaves). Lower corner tips. lighy bumped, mild flaking to spine lettering, still a very bright,. nearly fine copy in nearly fine dust jacket with some mild edge. rubbing, light shelf wear to spine ends and mild age-darkening and. dust soiling to spine and rear panels. Nice copies of this book are. uncommon and are quite scarce in jacket. (#136391).. First edition. Protagonist awakens in a grim world of the future dominated by socialism and science and learns that legend has made him a kind of messiah. He leads a successful revolt against the establishment. The story, first published in EVERYBODY&#39;S MAGAZINE as a four-part serial, June- September 1917, is one of the earliest American dystopian novels. "A more considerable work than is generally recognized, despite the pulp adventure aspects. One can find among the author&#39;s ultraconservative values such Orwellian anticipations as omnipresent slogans, euphemistic terms for horrible institutions, the artificial language Spikisi, the mechanics of thought control, and the apparatus of the police state. While the book is a deutero-WHEN THE SLEEPER WAKES, it is independent in detail, and much Rousseau&#39;s best work." - Bleiler, Science-Fiction: The Early Years 1922.
