John Wisden
Hi, This lot is an Original 1916 Wisden Paperback with facsimile spine. This is in Very Good condition, the only two things to note is a small rubbing to the front cover on the right and the spine is a slightly different colour to the book. Other than that is is magnificent and a very rare year. The covers are clean, nice and tall. They are nice and bright yellow too. A nice new spine with text has been added , it is neat and tidy but not an exact copy of an original Wisden. Excellent inside with clean pages and tightly bound. Tip top. New spine professionally added which makes the book readable and stops it falling apart. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Roosevelt, Theodore
New York: George H. Doran Company, 1916. First edition of this collection of essays by the twenty-sixth President of the United States. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by the author on the front free endpaper, "with all good wishes from Theodore Roosevelt May 10th 1917." In near fine condition. Fear God and Take Your Own Part is a collection of articles Theodore Roosevelt wrote, largely for Metropolitan Magazine, some six years after he left the presidency. The title is another way of saying that a nation must have the power and will for self-sacrifice as well as the power and will for self-protection. In the book, Roosevelt, who also wrote extensively on the outdoors, vigorously sets forth the "principles of true Americanism" that still reverberate throughout the nation today. Thompson, David; J.B. Tyrrell, (ed.).
Toronto: Champlain Society, 1916. 1st edition. Thick 8vo. Limited edition, #One of the 500 crested copies. xciii + 582pp + viii. B/w plates (photographs by J.B. Tyrrell); folded map in text; 3 large colour folded profiles; very large map in 4 sheets (in pocket). Fine. One of the Greatest Surveyors in the World. After joining the Northwest Company as a Wintering Partner in 1797, Thompson single-handedly mapped most of Western Canada from Lake Superior to the Pacific Ocean, along with parts of the American Pacific Northwest. At the same time he extended the fur trade into new regions. His work in the Canadian Rockies and the Athabasca River region is legendary, as is his survey of the entire length of the Columbia River, the first ever done. Part I narrates Thompson's experiences and travels in the service of the Hudson's Bay Company and Northwest Company in the country east of the Rockies between 1784 and 1807. Part II details the years 1807 to 1812. A ninety-three page historical introduction by Tyrrell provides a biography and a detailed itinerary of Thompson's explorations. Thompson completed the manuscript in 1847 hoping to publish it but never did. The manuscript was later purchased by Tyrrell, and ultimately transferred to the Ontario Archives. Tyrrell, recognizing Thompson's outstanding contributions, made it his mission to save Thompson's work from obscurity: the results are David Thompson's Narrative and his magnificent map of western America. Tyrrell comments in the enclosed letter: "First I sent it to several publishers in the U.S.A. and Canada, but they all refus … [Click Below for Full Description]

MacLean, Dr. Annie M.
New York; Chicago: Macmillan; McClurg, 1910; 1916. First editions. Both books in original publisher's cloth bindings with titles to spines and front boards. The former in VG+ condition with some sunning to spine and offsetting to rear board. The latter Near Fine, with the slightest bumping to extremities and early ownership inscription to front endpaper "C.W.B.M. [Christian Women's Board of Missions] Millersburg, Ohio Oct. 1918." Internally both copies clean, square, unmarked, and complete, with Wage-Earning Women retaining the two folding charts to the rear. A pair of important and ground-breaking studies on the conditions of working women in the United States and its national and international impacts. Annie M. MacLean was a cutting-edge sociologist whose work focused on the conditions of working women in the United States. Immersive in her work, she was a contributor to Jane Addams' Hull House and the settlement house movement as well as an investigative researcher who took on a variety of jobs to study the treatment and conditions women experienced. In 1907-1908, MacLean supervised a major study on behalf of the YWCA, using a staff of 29 women sociologists surveying a total of 400 companies employing a total of 135,000 women in more than 20 cities (Fish). The result was Wage-Earning Women, a data-driven survey on women's labor and labor conditions the likes of which had never before occurred in the U.S. And it took into account a wide array of situations in which women functioned: industrial work, office labor, seasonal farming. MacLean's work ushered in a new era, wher … [Click Below for Full Description]

Gilbert, Eleanor [Ann Rosenblatt]
New York & London: Funk & Wagnalls, 1916. First edition. Original green publisher's cloth binding with gilt to spine and front board. Just about Fine, with the smallest bumps to lower front corner and extremities of spine. Internally bright and unmarked; complete, including folding chart and rear appendix. The only first edition on the market without damage or ex-library marks; rarely found in this condition. An important book assisting the rising "modern" woman on succeeding in home life and business life to be a well-rounded individual. A compact and effective compendium of practical advice and encouragement for working women. While acknowledging that men continue to maintain power in business, Gilbert aims "to bring intimately to woman's attention the modern methods used by men to achieve great success in business, which she can apply in planning her own future." Women were increasingly recognized as members of the workforce -- studies in the same year through the YWCA had begun providing data, while advertisements and pop culture hailed the advent of the flapper and the 'modern woman' -- and Gilbert encourages their pursuit of financial independence. She also supports the growing notion that a woman needn't choose just one version of life. "I am convinced that you, the typical American business woman can be happy and successful both in business and as a many-sided, interesting woman." Education rates were, after all, rising for girls in America. Women's incomes were growing. And women began marrying later because financial precariousness was a decreasing concern. Hi, Here we have a rare 1916 Original Hardback Wisden, in Very Good Condition. The 21st Wisden Hardback and the most expensive of the 20th Century. The rarest or second rarest since 1900. I have been agornising over which of two 1916s to keep as they are both in such amazing condition but to sum up this Wisden is as nice as the one I own in my master set. The lettering is always an issue (if you like shiny gold leaf) on 1916s , i guess they were rationed on the gold leaf in 1916, however the front board has very good gilt for a 1916. The spine is faded and no dot after the year which is correct. Small name to first page corner. The boards are very good , small line mark to the corner at the top of the front board but other than that , nice clean boards. Inside the hinges are very good, both are springy! Amazingly clean inside including the yellow pastedowns. Minimal foxing. No restoration. A lovely book. Rare, [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Joslin, Elliott P.
Lea & Febiger. 1916 ELLIOTT P. JOSLIN FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST TEXTBOOK OF DIABETES IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE. 9 1/2 inches tall hardcover, publisher's gray cloth binding, gilt title to spine, color frontis of diabetic blood in test tubes, xvi, 440 pp, many tables. Wear to front edge of spine with small (1/8 inch) abrasion, binding tight, light age-toning page edges, pages clean without marks. Very good In custom archival mylar cover. FROM THE PREFACE: In writing this book I have tried to record those facts which have proven of service to me in the treatment of diabetes. For the benefit of my patients it has seemed well worth while to summarize my work with them during the last eighteen years, and I have honestly tried in these pages to let the 400 fatal cases tell their useful lessons to the 600 living. ELLIOTT PROCTER JOSLIN, M.D. (1869 - 1962) was the first doctor in the United States to specialize in diabetes and was the founder of today's Joslin Diabetes Center. Dr. Joslin was involved for seven decades in most every aspect of diabetes investigation and treatment, save for the fact that he did not discover insulin. Following the Toronto group's blockbuster discovery of insulin in 1921, and the group's disbanding several years later, Joslin became effectively the Dean of diabetes mellitus. In the mid 1920s, Joslin, in his mid 50s, took the reins as the world spokesman for the cause of diabetes. He was the first to advocate for teaching patients to care for their own diabetes, an approach now commonly referred to as DSME or Diabetes Self-Management Education. He is also … [Click Below for Full Description]

Lieut. C. [Clarence] Lininger
Various location in Mexico, 1916. Envelope or Cover. Very good. Although two previous U.S. experimental airmail flights occurred in 1911, it wasn't until 1916 during the Pancho Villa Punitive Expedition that the first real U. S. airmail service was begun by the Army's 1st Aero Squadron and its eight JN-3 Curtis-Jenny aircraft. The unit, based at San Antonio, Texas, arrived in Columbus on 15 March and deployed to Pershing's base camp at Casas Grande, Mexico on the 19th. High winds, poor maps, lack of repair parts, and severe terrain hampered their deployment, and it took the squadron a full week to re-assemble in Mexico, where it was soon found that the airplanes lacked the power to fly high enough to reconnoiter the mountains where Villa's force was hiding. Further, sand and dryness damaged engines and propellers, and it became apparent that the planes would soon become inoperable. So, the commander, Captain Benjamin D. Foulois, limited their use to transporting communiques and mail until all were no longer flyable. (See Gilnes, "In Pursuit of Pancho Villa" in Air Force Magazine, July 1991 and SWilkins, "Genesis of the Jenny" at HistoryNet.com) As noted in Volume 4 of the American Air Mail Catalog (AMMC 92), "On March 19 the 1st Aero Squadron began flying its eight planes between Columbus and points in Mexico, [transporting] mail and military command dispatches. . .. It is possible . . . to ascertain . . . if a particular letter was flown . . . from the field to Columbus, [it will bear] a Columbus postmark between March 19 and April 20." Sigmund Freud
Macmillan, 1916. Very Good +. The Interpretation of Dreams by Professor Sigmund Freud intro by A.A. Brill Authorized translation of Third Edition Early Printing Macmillan, 1916. VG+ for age, boards have some edge and corner wear and surface flaws, a few scuffs, tear to spine, some chips, nicks to spine tips. Interior clean, no writing. A solid collectible copy. The Interpretation of Dreams (German: Die Traumdeutung) is a book by psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud. The book introduces Freud's theory of the unconscious with respect to dream interpretation, and also first discusses what would later become the theory of the Oedipus complex. Freud revised the book at least eight times and, in the third edition, added an extensive section which treated dream symbolism very literally, following the influence of Wilhelm Stekel. Freud said of this work, "Insight such as this falls to one's lot but once in a lifetime." The initial print run of the book was very low -- it took many years to sell out the first 600 copies. However, the work gained popularity as Freud did, and seven more editions were printed in his lifetime. The first translation from German into English was completed by A. A. Brill, a Freudian psychoanalyst.

ELGAR, Edward 1857-1934
1 page. Quarto. Dated February 2, 1916. On stationery with "Severn House, 42, Netherhall Gardens, Hampstead, N.W." printed at upper right and "Telegrams: - Siromoris, London. Telephone: - 4771.P.O.Hampstead." at upper left corner. A short and direct statement, all the more interesting as Elgar never completed an opera: "I have no plans regarding opera & have no intention of writing one at present." Quite browned; slightly worn; creased at folds and slightly overall; central fold splitting at left margin. Best-known today for his Enigma Variations, Elgar's "abundant invention, largeness of vision, and strength and singularity of musical character place him high among European Romantic artists and at the peak of British music of his time. He drew inspiration from the culture and landscape of his own country, resourcefulness from the study of his continental colleagues; and contributed to all the major forms except opera, creating a significant body of symphonic literature, the finest oratorio by an Englishman, and in his popular music a style of direct national appeal." Diana McVeagh in Grove Music Online. Elgar began to sketch an opera called The Spanish Lady in 1932 but died before it could be completed.
