Tannenbaum, Herbert (ed.)
Mannheim: Herbert Tannenbaum, 1916. First edition. Softcover. g+ to vg. Large Quarto. 8pp. Original illustrated cream wraps with black lettering on cover. Brief introduction into design and building of gravestones for graves of Jewish soldiers. Issued in agreement with Rabbis of the armies of the West during W.W.I pointing out that graves of Jewish soldiers may not contain crosses for religious reasons. It provides examples for designs of so-called "Stelen" following the old Jewish tradition of grave markers. Though it is easier and more likely to find wood in the field there is no reason for the marker to lack dignity and stability. In cases when headstones are desired and available the design should also be plain and strictly follow the tradition. The booklet contains instructions on how to build wooden gravestones for soldiers in the field. It covers the crafting of the gravestones and provides detailed guidelines for the inscriptions according to Jewish tradition. Illustrated with technical drawings including scales of gravestone designs by Hermann Esch and Prof. M. v. Hugo. The samples presented are gravestones for M. Cohn, Karl Bär, O. Lippschitz, Elias Oppenheimer and others. Text in German. Wraps age toned with very light wear along edges. Wraps and interior in overall good+ to very good condition.

Early 20th-century brown half morocco, spine lettered in gilt, purple cloth sides, brown morocco label to front cover lettered in gilt, metal clasp, silk moiré endpapers, gilt edges. Slight damage to fore edge from where clasp has dragged over the book block, occasional minor creasing or splits to documents, but generally in very good condition externally and internally. The album was assembled by Francis Culling Carr-Gomm (1834-1919), with his bookplate (joint with his wife Emily Blanche Carr) to the front pastedown. Carr-Gomm was a colonial administrator in India, and a barrister and a local politician in London. The album has since been acquired by Peter Harrington directly from a descendant. The album takes the form of a series of biographies, written in a neat calligraphic hand, of every prime minister from Pitt the Elder to David Lloyd George, with assorted ephemera – generally letters and prints, also newspaper clippings – laid in. Gilbert, Eleanor [Ann Rosenblatt]
New York & London: Funk & Wagnalls, 1916. First edition. Fine. Original green publisher's cloth binding with gilt to spine and front board. Just about Fine, with the smallest bumps to lower front corner and extremities of spine. Internally bright and unmarked; complete, including folding chart and rear appendix. The only first edition on the market without damage or ex-library marks; rarely found in this condition. An important book assisting the rising "modern" woman on succeeding in home life and business life to be a well-rounded individual. A compact and effective compendium of practical advice and encouragement for working women. While acknowledging that men continue to maintain power in business, Gilbert aims "to bring intimately to woman's attention the modern methods used by men to achieve great success in business, which she can apply in planning her own future." Women were increasingly recognized as members of the workforce -- studies in the same year through the YWCA had begun providing data, while advertisements and pop culture hailed the advent of the flapper and the 'modern woman' -- and Gilbert encourages their pursuit of financial independence. She also supports the growing notion that a woman needn't choose just one version of life. "I am convinced that you, the typical American business woman can be happy and successful both in business and as a many-sided, interesting woman." Education rates were, after all, rising for girls in America. Women's incomes were growing. And women began marrying later because financial precariousness was a decreasing conc … [Click Below for Full Description]

BERTRAM, Jessie Brown, after Hill & Adamson.
1843–47, printed circa 1916. 50 carbon prints, most approximately 6 x 8 inches, each mounted on thick card approximately 10¼ x 16½ inches, within border ruled in brown ink; many titled and numbered in pencil below, several with pencil annotations in a later hand on verso (another later numbering system is indicated in square brackets in descriptions below); in original wood box with hinged opening front panel and lid, original paper label pasted inside lid 'J. BERTRAM, Platinotype and Carbon printer, 148 Rose Street, Edinburgh'; with a small gelatin silver 'passport' style photograph of an older woman with Foreign Office stamps in ink and blind on lower section, annotated 'Jessie Bertram' (partially obscured) in ink on verso.David Octavius Hill and Robert Adamson are known primarily for their portraits of 'men of the cloth' taken during a short burst of intense photographic activity between 1843 and 1847. Their portraits of women and children are fewer but equally memorable and perhaps more appreciated today, as are their Newhaven fishing portraits, their landscapes and city views. This body of work was kept in the public's attention by the efforts of their successors, the photographers and collector/ publishers Thomas and James Craig Annan, Andrew Elliot, Alfred Stieglitz and, by no means least, the Edinburgh photographer Jessie Bertram (1881–1954). It was she who reprinted this selection of their photographs which were advertised by the publisher, Andrew Elliot, as being made from the original calotype negatives. Roosevelt, Theodore
George H. Doran Company, New York, 1916. First edition of this collection of essays by the twenty-sixth President of the United States. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by the author on the front free endpaper, "with all good wishes from Theodore Roosevelt May 10th 1917." In near fine condition. Fear God and Take Your Own Part is a collection of articles Theodore Roosevelt wrote, largely for Metropolitan Magazine, some six years after he left the presidency. The title is another way of saying that a nation must have the power and will for self-sacrifice as well as the power and will for self-protection. In the book, Roosevelt, who also wrote extensively on the outdoors, vigorously sets forth the "principles of true Americanism" that still reverberate throughout the nation today. Rabet, M.
1916-1918. Hardcover. Fabric pastedown on cloth. . Very Good. Oblong, 13.5 by 20 cm. 33 leaves, drawings only on rectos, with two per page on 25 leaves, and eight full page cartoons. Cartoon captions are in French, and the venom is directed at Kaiser Guillaume (Wilhelm II), the Crown Prince, Bethmann-Hollweg, his generals and admirals such as von Tirpitz, von Bissing, von Zeppelin, Turkey and other Central Powers. The caricatures are masterful miniatures. Rabet captures the essence of his target's facial features with a panache of the accomplished caricaturists, and the illustrations truly stand on their own, even without the captioned short dialogues accompanying the drawings. We don't have information about the artist, M. Rabet, but we can comfortably appraise the artwork as professional level. Light wear.

1916. W.B. YEATS Reveries Over Childhood and Youth With the AUTHOR'S SIGNED PRESENTATION at the head of the front fly leaf: 'Aleck Sheppeler [sic] from WBYeats April 19. 1916.'. This is the hardback First Trade Edition published by The Macmillan Company, New York in 1916. (First Trade Edition is used in the traditional manner, so please be assured that this copy is the First Impression). With a colour frontispiece 'Memory Harbour' by Jack B. Yeats and a note on this by the author printed on the facing tissue guard. A further two portrait illustrations of the author's mother and father are also included. A rather nice association copy, presented to his mistress seven days before publication date. Schepeler is primarily remembered as Augustus John's mistress and one of his chief models from 1906 to 1908. His drawings of her are often considered amongst his best work. Born in Russia in 1882, Alexandra 'Alick' [sometimes, as in this case, 'Aleck'] Schepeler was raised in Poland. She later settled in London, where she worked as a secretary at the Illustrated London News for over fifty years, and it was there that she met Augustus John. John mentions his fascination with her in his autobiography, Chiaroscuro (1952): 'I was at this time principally occupied in drawing and painting a subject, Alick Schepeler, to whose strange charm I had bowed. I made many drawings of Miss Schepeler who, of Slavonic origin, illustrated in herself the paradox of Polish pride united to Russian abandon.'. Schepeler was also a lover and friend of Wyndham Lewis and other writers and artists notably W.B. … [Click Below for Full Description]

Erste Auflage! First Edition of Ernst Ferdinand Sauerbruch's (1875-1951) treatise on movable artificial arms and hands, operated by the patient's remaining muscles; and on the preparation of the amputation stump for their use. See Peltier, Orthopedics, p. 278 for his turn-up plasty procedure in excision of the femur. [Attributes: First Edition]
