1916. W.B. YEATS Reveries Over Childhood and Youth With the AUTHOR'S SIGNED PRESENTATION at the head of the front fly leaf: 'Aleck Sheppeler [sic] from WBYeats April 19. 1916.'. This is the hardback First Trade Edition* published by The Macmillan Company, New York in 1916. ((*First Trade Edition means, as it should, that this is a first Trade impression/printing). With a colour frontispiece 'Memory Harbour' by Jack B. Yeats and a note on this by the author printed on the facing tissue guard. A further two portrait illustrations of the author's mother and father are also included. A very clean copy internally. The black mounting paper holding the tipped on frontispiece is detached which is not unknown, in both American and English editions, due to the fragility of the paper. Bound in its original grey paper boards, the upper one with a design by Thomas Sturge Moore, and buff coloured cloth spine, as issued. The top edge is trimmed, while the fore and bottom edges are untrimmed. A few slight marks on the upper board and the spine is a little browned but a near fine, very firm copy. Loosely inserted is a newspaper clipping concerning Alick Schepeler. Complete with its cardboard slip case, with a printed title label on one edge. It looks like it has the same grey paper as on the book but this is a poor example which is rather worn, with fading and darkening and has some loss of a little over one inch from one edge. However it has fulfilled its purpose of keeping the book protected, and to find one with the book appears to be a rare occurrence: I can't trace another! Wade 112. Contains 550 black and white or sepia-toned gelatin silver photographs measuring between 3" x 2" and 5" x 4" with some captions. Rubbing, edgewear, a couple pages detached but present thus very good album with fine photographs. A family photo album from Rochester, New York in 1909 through to 1916. The photo album features a full family of grandparents, parents, and children living together. A large amount of the photographs are artistically cut into shapes such as circles, diamonds, and rectangles with rounded corners. There are several pictures of the small town they lived in with dirt streets and open fields. Most of the photos feature the family standing together smiling in front of their home or visiting different locations like the beach and the city. Some of the locations include Cherry Beach and Walpole Island in Canada, Algonac Michigan; and Chicago. Several pictures are of the woman making silly faces and running around the woods. Some pictures are of the women playing baseball with makeshift bases and outfits. There are also pictures of a woman with her hair down and out of a bun, dancing around in a small park. Some of the photos that feature the men in the family show them with their automobiles driving around. There are also a couple of pictures of young men with possible gay overtones exploring the city, holding hands, and with one image where two boys are seemingly about to kiss. Many of the photos show the young children … [Click Below for Full Description]

Imperial 8vo (26,5:19 cm). 2 pages, numbered 768-769. Letterpress on machine paper, in original publisher's brochure on orange-coloured stock with black title printing. First separate printing in the original wrappers, of Einstein's obituary for German astronomer and physicist Karl Schwarzschild, a pioneer in astrophysics. Edition: Schwarzschild had provided the first exact solution to the Einstein field equations of general relativity, for the limited case of a single spherical non-rotating mass, which he had accomplished in 1915, the same year that Einstein first introduced his »Theory of General Relativity«. Condition: Wrappers minimally torn at margins, otherwise very well preserved copy indeed, uncut thus obviously not opened at all. Rarity: ABPC (1973ff.) and APO (1988ff.) record only 1 copy of this edition at auction (2014). Reference: Schilpp-Shields 100; Weil 87.

First separate printing in the original wrappers, of this important paper by Einstein, in which he proposend for the first time the existence of gravitational waves according to his Theory of General Relativity, which he had completed just a few months earlier, in early Dec. 1915. Edition: Gravitational radiation should be observed and empirically proved much later. In 1993 the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded for their indirect observation, and only in 2015 they could be finally observed directly. Condition: Rear cover at lower right corner with fault, rear cover partly loose, last leaves and front cover in parts torn, otherwise fresh copy, obviously unread. Imperial 8vo (25,2:17,2 cm), 6 pages, numbered 184-188 [1]. Letterpress on machine paper, in original publisher's brochure on orange-coloured stock with black title printing. First offprint in the original wrappers, of this important paper by Einstein about electromagnetism. Condition: Wrappers minimally dusty, otherwise very well preserved copy. Rarity: According to Weil early offprints of Einstein's papers may also be qualified as original and also highly collectable editions, however they were printed in a certain, but still small print run for commercial use (mainly to sell them to fellow natural scientists): „No doubt, the first appearance in a periodical is the „original edition", but I have to leave it open for collectors, librarians and others to decide whether these offprints in wrappers, mostly with a printed title on them (especially in the »Sitzungsberichte der Königlich Preussischen Akademie der Wissenschaften«) are also „original editions". Albert EINSTEIN: ERNST MACH. Sonderabdruck [Offprint] aus der Physikalischen Zeitschrift [17. Jahrgang. 1916. Seite 101-104]. Überreicht vom Verfasser [Presented by the author]. With 1 cliché repro of Mach's signed photo portrait. Leipzig: Hirzel (August Pries) 1916. 4mo (27,5:19,5). 4 pages. Letterpress on machine paper, in original publisher's brochure on brown stock with black title printing. True author's presentation offprint in the original wrappers, of Einstein's obituary for Austrian physicist and philosopher Ernst Mach. Edition: Mach is particularly known as influential philosopher of science for his contemporaries. Through his criticism of Newton's theories of space and time he for instance foreshadowed Einstein's theory of relativity. Condition: Corners and margins of wrappers with some very small faults, cover slightly water-stained, paper minimally foxy, otherwise solid copy. Rarity: Present copy is imprinted „Überreicht vom Verfasser" (presented by the author) on the upper right corner of the first page, which indicates it's utmost rarity, as author's presentation offprints of Einstein papers, from any journal or any period, were printed in a small print run for the use of the author only. ABPC (1973ff.) and APO (1988ff.) show no record at all. Reference: Collected Papers, vol. 6, 29; Schilpp-Shields 96; Weil 89.

Meegeren, Han von

The First UK printing published by Grant Richards, London in 1916. The BOOK is in near Fine condition with just some light spotting to the prelims. The green top-stain is still present. Gold lettering to the spine and front cover remain very bright. The publisher's catalogue is present to the rear of the book. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ or better condition. Minor edge-wear with a little loss at the spine ends and some light age related markings and darkening. The coloured front panel illustration looks very striking in the removable brodart archival cover. The book has been inscribed by the artist Albert Rutherston to the front blank end-paper: 'To Norman, with apologies for this scribble, sign of the times'. The recipient was the artist Norman Wilkinson who was a British artist who was primarily a marine painter, but also an illustrator, poster artist, and wartime camoufleur. Wilkinson invented dazzle painting to protect merchant shipping during the First World War. Firbank's scarce second novel with only 500 copies issued. Albert Rutherston (formerly Rothenstein) contributes two B/W illustrations to the book. The frontis is reproduced in colour on the wrapper front panel to striking effect. Scarce with such attributes. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

LEADBITTER, Eric
London: George Allen & Unwin [and] Hodder & Stoughton 1916-[1923]. Six volumes, "Rain Before Seven" and "Shepherd's Warning" second impression, the other four first edition, 8vo. The author's copies with his annotations to the fly leaves, "Rain Before Seven" with a portion of a printed wraparound band loosely inserted showing press reviews. Publisher's cloth, four volumes ("The Road to Nowhere", "Shepherd's Warning", "Dead Reckoning" and "The Evil that Men Do") still with their d.w.'s, some loss to edges, particularly to two of the heads of the spines, "Rain Before Seven" with light wear to the top of the cloth spine. A remarkable set of Leadbitter's own copies of all six of his novels. With the exception of "Rain Before Seven", in which he has only noted the date of publication in America, Leadbitter has listed on the fly leaves the dates the novels were begun and finished plus revision and final publication dates, and in two cases noted early drafts under different titles. Leadbitter had a distinguished career as a civil servant, and his novels, written in his 20s and early 30s, have been largely forgotten. [Attributes: First Edition]

Erfurth, Hugo (1874-1948).
Dresden, 1916. 10 x 7,3 cm (Fotografie); 19,8 x 13,2 cm (Unterlagekarton). Hugo Erfurth (* 14. Oktober 1874 in Halle (Saale); † 14. Georg Hermann Gelbke (* 12. September 1882 in Rochlitz, Sachsen; † 17. Erfurth, Hugo (1874-1948). Portrait of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Wildemann, Anneliese (1. Hälfte 20. Jahrhundert)
Sie fand u.a.

Yizkor Book in Yiddish published by Poalei Tziyon in New York 1916. This book was published by Poalei Tziyon (Workers of Zion)* in 1916 to commemorate fallen comrades and others, some who had settled in Zion, then Ottoman Palestine. This book is notable for memorial pages mentioning Moshe Barsky, who, at age 18, was the first Kibbutz casualty of the Arab-Jewish conflict on Degania Aleph, the first Kibbutz. The book cover is in rough condition, and is well worn, with possible moisture exposure. The white graphic on the cover is partially intact, and spells 'yizkor' with tears dropping from it. The binding is in good condition and the interior pages are in very good condition, with beautiful illustrations, portraits and silver ink on black printing. The book is entirely in Yiddish. *an organization Poale Zion (also spelled Poalei Tziyon or Poaley Syjon, meaning "Workers of Zion") was a movement of Marxist-Zionist Jewish workers founded in various cities of Poland, Europe and the Russian Empire in about the turn of the 20th century after the Bund rejected Zionism in 1901. Andersen, Hans Christian; Clarke, Harry (Illustrator)
New York: Brentano's, [1916]. Clarke, Harry. First Edition. First American edition, quarto size, 320 pp. Hans Christian Andersen's (1805-1875) "Fairy Tales" have been beloved by both children and adults ever since they were first published, with some tales appearing as early as 1835. Often containing a moral story clothed in fantasy, but less dark than the Grimms' tales, they have been translated into 125 different languages and many of the stories have been adapted to stage and screen. One only has to give the names for the stories to infuse our minds: Thumbelina, The Emperor's New Clothes, The Ugly Duckling, The Snow Queen, and many more. This version is illustrated by Irish artist Harry Clarke (1890-1931), who was apprenticed to his father, the head of a large firm of stained glass artists, in 1906. An accomplished glass artist whose work can be seen in both secular and religious settings, Clarke's illustrations can be compared to that of Aubrey Beardsley, Kay Nielson, and Edmund Dulac, taken up during the tail end of what was considered the Golden Age of Illustration; his work is often imbued with a sinister atmosphere also exemplified by Beardsley. "Fairy Tales. . ." was published shortly before Clarke's career-making work for Edgar Allan Poe's "Tales of Mystery and Imagination"; the highly detailed drawings take on an almost psychedelic quality, far ahead of their time, and their eerie beauty still fascinates today. ___DESCRIPTION: Full original grey cloth titled and illustrated in black to the front board and spine, with an oval-cut paper illustration mounted to the … [Click Below for Full Description]
