GENERAL STAFF, INDIA.
Simla, Printed at the Government Monotype Press, 1916. Small 8vo. Original eggshell cloth wallet binding, spine and front cover lettered in black; pp. [2], iv, 211, folding lithographic map in three colours of Lower Mesopotamia, north-eastern Arabia and the Gulf coast down to Tanajib (in front pocket); cloth a bit marked and rubbed, internally very good. Rare first edition of a top-secret military publication. This book reports on the ups and downs of the Saudi dynasty based in Najd, the expansion and waning of power during the 19th century, the first appearance of the Ottomans in 1818, who were driven from the country in 1831. The authors then go into detail about the more recent events and rise of the Saudi dynasty and give an outline of British operations on the Gulf and in Iraq. The amount of details on the geography, infrastructure and military strength of the enemy is astonishing. Kuwait features strongly in this handbook, most likely derived from Captain Shakespear's gathering of intelligence and topographical data. Kuwait is described as a Sheikhdom having to balance the influence of the Ottoman Empire (which had a colony South of Kuwait, Al Hasa), Wahhabism, the Ibn Saud family, and British interests. 'The population is Muhammadan, Arab fashion, that is tolerant to others and not over-rigid to themselves. The Wahaby faith is proscribed, and all the effort of the Najd have never succeeded in making one single proselyte at Kuwait' (p. 40). The harbour is described as 'a fine bay some 20 miles long and 10 miles wide' with a hill fort 180 feet above sea level. 'It is a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Meegeren, Han von
Carl Sandburg 1st 1/1
1916. Chicago Poems FIRST EDITION/PRINTING/STATE PRESENTATION COPY SIGNED, DATED, AND INSCRIBED by Carl Sandburg Hardcover with No Dust Jacket This is a remarkable, one-of-a-kind PRESENTATION COPY of Chicago Poems, FIRST EDITION/FIRST PRINTING/FIRST STATE with all points, which is SIGNED, DATED, AND INSCRIBED by Carl Sandburg. On May 12, 1916, one month or so after Chicago Poems had its first printing in April 1916, Mr. Sandburg inscribed this book to Salmon O. Levinson (1865-1941), a prominent Chicago attorney, philanthropist, and world peace advocate (later, one of the drafters of the international Kellogg-Briand pact to outlaw war). This recipient was a particularly special one for Mr. Sandburg: In 1913, Mr. Levinson had established the annual and permanently endowed Levinson Prize for "the best poem or group of poems by a citizen of the United States," which is still presented annually by the Poetry Foundation. In 1914, Mr. Sandburg was the very first recipient of the Levinson Prize; he won it for a group of nine "Chicago Poems" published in the March 1914 edition of the Poetry Foundation's Poetry magazine, most of which (including "Chicago" and many others) would be included in this book. Mr. Sandburg reportedly said that the (then) $200 Levinson Prize "octupled" his bank account. It is this connection between Mr. Levinson and Mr. Sandburg that makes this signed, dated, and inscribed presentation copy so significant. This book was Mr. Sandburg's first collection of poems published by a mainstream publisher, and it established Mr. Sandburg as a major literary figure. Th … [Click Below for Full Description]

Biesalski, Konrad & Mayer, Leo
[Click Below for Full Description]

Leipzig: Hirzel (August Pries) 1916.. 4mo (27,5:19,5). 4 pages. Letterpress on machine paper, in original publisher's brochure on brown stock with black title printing.. True author's presentation offprint in the original wrappers, of Einstein's obituary for Austrian physicist and philosopher Ernst Mach. - Edition: Mach is particularly known as influential philosopher of science for his contemporaries. Through his criticism of Newton's theories of space and time he for instance foreshadowed Einstein's theory of relativity. - Condition: Corners and margins of wrappers with some very small faults, cover slightly water-stained, paper minimally foxy, otherwise solid copy. - Rarity: Present copy is imprinted „Überreicht vom Verfasser" (presented by the author) on the upper right corner of the first page, which indicates it's utmost rarity, as author's presentation offprints of Einstein papers, from any journal or any period, were printed in a small print run for the use of the author only. OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH - UNSWORTH COLLIERY, DURHAM.
H.M.S.O., [1916-1932]. Oblong folio, [207 x 334mm] 100 leaves of which 17 are have been used describing deaths through mine accidents; original cloth backed printed covers (somewhat marked and soiled); together with an associated Durham Miners' Association minute book for the Unsworth Colliery for the years 1895 to 1897. From the time the Coal Mines Act of 1911 came in to force a record of any fatality subsequent investigation had to be kept by the miners with their account of the incident. The register takes the form of pre-printed sheets that workmen employed at the mine were able to give their account of the causes of any accident and to make their own assessment on whether there was negligence or not. Comparing the record by the workmen with the newspaper reports of inquests there does seem to be some divergence of opinion. On the 8th June Francis Welch was killed when a large stone fell on him after a prop had been knocked out. The inquest notes that 'The jury returned a verdict, "Accidental death". Mr Welsh leaves a widow and family of six. Two sons are active service' [Newcastle Journal - Monday 12 June 1916] but the workers added 'we desire to point out that the place where the accident occurred is only 6 ft wide. in our opinion this is not sufficient width where sets [of wagons] are running & we recommend that it be widened.' Here the minors saw this as just another accident with no apportioning of fault. Another accident on the 8th September 'was caused due to the rope of beetle breaking causing the death of a boy named W. Smith, again they suggested quantities of … [Click Below for Full Description]

1916. 8vo. 8 pp. on 4 ff. (conjoined leaves). With a contemporary photograph of her in costume. A wartime letter in which Mata Hari tells "Monsieur Petitpied" about her stay at the Paris Grand Hotel, her friends fighting since day one, and about her role as a "godmother" when they are at the front: "Me voilà déjà presque deux mois en voyage et il est vrai je ne vous ai pas encore donné de mes nouvelles. ANON.
1916 - 1917. Oblong 8vo album, containing 105 postcards (76 of Vilnius and 29 of other towns and cities in Eastern Europe incl. Grodno and Minsk), each measuring approximately 90 by 140mm. 74 of the Vilnius postcards are gelatin silver print photographs, the majority of which are in excellent condition (a few bear marginal creases and some light stains). A handful have ms. annotations to the images; almost all have ms. messages in black ink on the verso, along with postage stamps. 50ll. A rare survival, this album provides a visual record of the Jewish population of Vilnius during the Great War. Sent via the Deutsche Feldpost to addressees in Berlin, they are also a fascinating and atypical example of WWI Feldpostkarten; the field postcards sent by German service members during the conflict. From as early as the fourteenth century, the capital of Lithuania was well known for its Jewish community. Widely referred to as the Jerusalem of Lithuania, even Napoleon referred to the city as the Jerusalem of the North. By the end of World War II that reputation had disappeared, as the vast majority of the Jewish population were murdered in the Holocaust. The German army, who captured the city in June 1941, took just over three years to extinguish a people who had flourished there for centuries. German forces also occupied Vilnius three decades earlier during WWI, albeit with a starkly different, peaceable attitude toward the Jewish inhabitants. As almost 100,000 Jews served in the German army, a number would have certainly been stationed in Lithuania between 1915 and 1918, and it ca … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tannenbaum, Herbert (ed.)
Herbert Tannenbaum, Mannheim, 1916. Large Quarto. 8pp. Original illustrated cream wraps with black lettering on cover. Brief introduction into design and building of gravestones for graves of Jewish soldiers. Issued in agreement with Rabbis of the armies of the West during W.W.I pointing out that graves of Jewish soldiers may not contain crosses for religious reasons. It provides examples for designs of so-called "Stelen" following the old Jewish tradition of grave markers. Though it is easier and more likely to find wood in the field there is no reason for the marker to lack dignity and stability. In cases when headstones are desired and available the design should also be plain and strictly follow the tradition. The booklet contains instructions on how to build wooden gravestones for soldiers in the field. It covers the crafting of the gravestones and provides detailed guidelines for the inscriptions according to Jewish tradition. Illustrated with technical drawings including scales of gravestone designs by Hermann Esch and Prof. M. v. Hugo. The samples presented are gravestones for M. Cohn, Karl Bär, O. Lippschitz, Elias Oppenheimer and others. Text in German. Wraps age toned with very light wear along edges. Wraps and interior in overall good+ to very good condition. The result was Wage-Earning Women, a data-driven survey on women's labor and labor conditions the likes of which had never before occurred in the U.S. And it took into account a wide array of situations in which women functioned: industrial work, office labor, seasonal farming.
