De Amicis, Edmondo; J. G. Lista translator, Mary E. Burt editor,
The Stratford Company, 1916. Hardcover. First American edition. 8vo, red cloth, light wear and soil, spine faded. Inscribed on the pastedown to Sidney Lanier Jr. from the translator, also signed on the flyleaf ("Bravo Lista!") by Enrico Caruso, and inscribed also very fondly on the half title to Lanier from the translator ("With Compliments of the Country Cobbler and Translator) dated January 2nd, 1917. The recipient, Sidney Lanier Jr., was the son of a famous Confederate poet and musician, who died in 1881. Sidney ran an interesting camp in Eliot Maine. According to the website Mainmemories: "At Camp Sidney Lanier in Eliot, campers acted out Bible dramas written by Sidney Lanier Jr. (1870-1918) every Sunday in the woods. Lanier, using ideas developed by his father, poet Sidney Lanier Sr. (1870-1918), attempted to teach children the "art of living." They participated in a strict routine of music, crafts, nature study, and other activities. Children went through a hierarchy of types of social organization to reach the highest form, which was spiritual and represented by farm and home. " Finally, at the end of the book, a blank page is inscribed from Elizabeth Lanier to her grandson, explaining the connection between Burt and the Lanier family, dated 1933. A great association copy of this particular book. Very Good. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Théophile Steinlen
1916. This poster by Theophile Alexandre Steinlen is an expressive image commemorating Journee Serbe (Serbia Day). The poster shows a group a Serbian citizens and soldiers as they head into the mountain regions of Albania and Montenegro, a tragic result of the 1915 invasion from Austria-Hungary and German forces. Journee Serbe or Serbia Day is known as the anniversary of the Battle of Kosovo in 1389, when Serbian Prince Lazar Hrebeljanovi? went to battle with an invading army of the Ottoman empire and consequently lost Serbian independence. The event became an important symbol of Serbian nationalism in the 19th century. During World War I, Serbia was an ally of Britain, France, and Russia. Serbia was an enemy of Austria-Hungary, which blamed Serbian conspirators for the murder of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, and was determined to punish the Serbs for the assassination. (World Digital Library). Born in Lausanne, Switzerland, Theophile Alexandre Steinlen (1859 – 1923) was a prolific artist known for his Art Nouveau paintings and posters. Before gaining traction as an Art Nouveau connoisseur, Steinlen studied design at the University of Lausanne and worked as a designer trainee at a textile mill in France. A lover of cats, one of Steinlen’s most iconic images is the Le Chat Noir, a club in Montmartre where Steinlen met artists Henri Matisse, Adolphe Willette, Felix Vallotton and Henri de Toulouse Lautrec. The works of Steinlein paintings were frequently displayed at the Salon des Indépendants and he worked for magazines such as Le Rire a … [Click Below for Full Description]

LOUVEAU-ROUVEYRE, Marcel Eugene.
Unpublished artwork, 1916. LOUVEAU-ROUVEYRE, Marcel Eugene. Etudes de Boches 16 Aquarelles de Louveau-Rouveyre. VERDUN and the Somme 1916. An album of original sketches by Marcel Eugene Louveau- Rouveyre (1881-1941) comprising seven watercolour sketches and nine graphite drawings, all signed and all but one dated. Mainly captioned "prisonnier allemand" [ German prisoner], "Malades allemands" [Wounded Germans] "au travail " [at work] or similar. The images, on various different papers, are fixed into a notebook with brown card wraps, titled to the front in red and black crayon. It seems likely that the images were made in the rear of the front line trenches, where wounded soldiers were treated, and prisoners processed. Not much is known of Louveau-Rouveyre. We have found details of a Marie Louveau-Rouveyre , an engraver, possibly a parent. Marcel seems to have worked as a painter, etcher; copperplate engraver and watercolourist, and his works are listed online. We have found auctions of his work dating from the 1990's through to 2015. He was active in Paris and studied under Jean Joseph Benjamin Constant (1845-1902), Léon Bonnat (1833-1922), and Jean-Paul Laurens (1838-1921). He would have been thirty five years of age when the images were made, but we have not been able to discover if he was serving in the French forces at the time, or was working as a war artist. Battlefield art from World War One (" trench art") is increasingly hard to find and is sought after. The works here, titled with a pejorative name for the German soldiers, and depicting prisoners and wounded me … [Click Below for Full Description]

CITY COMMISSIONERS OF THE CITY OF EAGLE PASS, TEXAS
Eagle Pass, Texas: Guide Print Co., [1916]., 1916. First edition. First edition. 6 1/4" x 3 1/2" printed wrappers, n. p. (16 pp.). An ephemeral work that prints regulations for automobile traffic in Eagle Pass, Texas, a border town slightly southwest of San Antonio on the Rio Grande. Many of the rules address cars for hire in town, and attempt to govern fares for various common trips, including to locations in Mexico. It should cost fifty cents for one passenger to cross into Piedras Negras, for example, and much more to various mining and ranching operations in the area. Other rules discuss mandatory hand signals and tail lights, and attempt to organize "jitney" services in town. Not in OCLC. Minor wear to foot of spine and a tiny corner chip to bottom front cover corner, else a very good, tight and internally clean booklet of early transportation guide lines.

De Amicis, Edmondo; J G Lista translator, Mary E Burt editor, Enrico Caruso
Boston: The Stratford Company, 1916. Hardcover. Very Good.

The Sportsman" (Compiled and Edited)
British Sports and Sportsmen, Covent Garden, London, 1916. A lovely set comprising of 9 volumes in about fine bright condition all number 844 of a limited edition of 1,000, as stated on the verso page early in each publication. No inscriptions and clean pages throughout all volumes. These are elephant folio, so big and very impressive volumes. All 9 are in similar condition, being just slightly rubbed at the very corner tips, with the odd little surface scuff to the leather boards. Some have very sporadic, mild foxing but really they are all quite superb. The earliest date of publication stated is 1916 for the Yachting and Rowing volume, although most are undated. There are also the two companion volumes included, Past Sportsmen parts I and II; it's fairly evident from the pictures that part I is somewhat worn at the spine ends and rubbed along the length of the spine, much less so is part II. Internally both are very sound but, it has to be said that these two volumes are in nowhere near as nice condition as the main 9 volumes. More information on request. Please enquire first before placing an order, especially from overseas, as it may not be possible to send in the post due to the size and weight of this set. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
