YORK, Norman
Mart, Texas, 1916. Near Fine. Approximately 80 typescripts consisting of retained letters, a few Autograph Letters Signed, and a few carbon copies manuscript. Condition is generally very good, but with several letters heavily toned and brittle; about half are two-hole punched. About 90% of the material is from October-December 1914. Norman York from Mart, Texas was the 16-year-old assistant chief of "The Invincibles Interstate Troop of Corresponding Scouts" a Boy Scouts of America spinoff created by George M. Holt, a Scoutmaster in Kansas City, Missouri. The group was a highly structured pen-pal club that boasted members in 40 states and several countries. Each scout was required to write a certain number of letters a month and this archive documents the exceptional amount of work young Norman York put forth to keep things going. He wrote numerous letters monthly, sharing interests, dreams, thoughts about girls, and most of all, the joy and promotion of scouting, all in a hurried and innocent style that often lacked any pretense to punctuation and spelling. In December 1914, he wrote a scout in England: "I know that your country is at war at present and hope them all the success that I can. We are bothers to each other and can not lay down in time of need can we. Old England is going to clean Germanys plow alright and clean it good. Sol Plaatje
P S King. Published by P S King, this is the first UK edition published in 1916. As an activist and politician Sol Plaatje spent much of his life in the struggle for the enfranchisement and liberation of African people. He was a founder member and first General Secretary of the South African Native National Congress (SANNC), which would become the African National Congress (ANC) ten years later. As a member of an SANNC deputation he travelled to England to protest the Natives Land Act, 1913. This Act effectively outlawed the purchase or rent of land by african people. This book is his protest against the Act which was published in the UK during the first world war. The book was also released in the US but was not published in South Africa until many years later.  Sol Plaatje has only in recent years been recognised as one of the key figures in South African history and as one of the founders of the ANC was an instrumental figure in bringing change to the region in later years. This is a scarce first edition published in 1916 soon after the Natives Land Act was brought into being. It is also rare to have a copy in this condition. Condition: The book is in VERY GOOD condition. The boards are tidy and presentable. No sunning on the spine. The pages have minimal marks or foxing. There is minor wear to the top of the spine and perhaps there was a booksellers sticker on the front board but there are no remnants of this. Overall VERY GOOD . Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 1916.

Mackenzie, Sir James
Henry Frowde, Hodder & Stoughton, 1916. 1st edition, 3rd impression, slight wear on upper spine edge, MACKENZIE, Sir James (1853-1925) Regarded as one of the greatest English cardiologists. He was born in Scone, Scotland and studied medicine at Edinburgh University. He established his practice at Burnley, Lancashire where he developed his own ink polygraph with which he was able to simultaneously record the arterial and venous pulsations during his study on arrhythmias. He was the first to note the loss of effective atrial contraction and named it 'Atrial paralysis'. The condition was later re-named 'atrial fibrillation' by Sir Thomas Lewis (1881-1945). Mackenzie also described the functional pathology of cardiac tissue in 1907 and established the use of digitalis in treatment of auricular fibrillation. He published Diseases of the Heart (1908), Principles of Diagnosis and Treatment in Heart Affections (1916), and The Future of Medicine (1919). He was knighted in 1915, and in 1918 he founded the James Mackenzie Institute at St Andrew's to promote clinical research 0.0 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Thám, Géza, Hungarian artist (fl. 1917).
1916. 14 mounted plates in pencil, ink and colour wash, 2 of which are stuck to the outsides of the portfolio's protective boards with cloth ties. Various sizes, but mostly ca. 170 x 130 mm. Signed and captioned in English and Hungarian. Rare survival of a collection of sketches from the Russian POW camp in Peschanka, Siberia, all executed by an evidently accomplished, otherwise undocumented Hungarian artist (and soldier in the Austro-Hungarian army) who captured the conditions in and around the camp during the later years of the First World War. Thám's caricature-like style is marked by clear, precise outlines reminiscent of the contemporaneous work of Olaf Gulbransson and Eduard Thöny. The two larger sketches on the cover boards (measuring ca. 170 x 220 mm) show self-portraits of the artist, at work at oil paintings (one a landscape, the other a nude). The leaves within show prisoners climbing the bunk bed or resting in their crowded cots, marching through a snowed-in camp carrying heavy buckets, playing chess, etc.; some are captioned "Coming from the American Y.M.C.A. Kitchen", "The Red Cross library", or even show ladies in fur coats with an officer "at the exhibition", while a few others have Easter Greetings themes. - Peschanka is near Chita in the Transbaikalia region, on the Trans-Siberian Railway, 6035 kilometres from Moscow. While during the Great War conditions in the POW camps on the whole were vastly superior to those during WWII, thanks to the efforts of the Red Cross and inspectors from neutral countries, the situation in the Siberian camps was notoriously p … [Click Below for Full Description]

CHAPLIN, CHARLES & ROSE WILDER LANE
Indianapolis: Bobbs-Merrill, 1916. First Edition. Laid in is a card inscribed by author - actor, Charles Chaplin with an early fountain signature: “Faithfully, Charles Chaplin.” A legendary rarity, this book was compiled from a series of interviews with Chaplin by the journalist Rose Wilder Lane (daughter of Laura Ingalls Wilder) plus material that was created by Lane. Additionally, laid in is a piece of paper autographed ink by Rose Wilder Lane. Just before publication, Chaplin learned of the intended publication and had the book suppressed, and most of the copies were destroyed, only a tiny handful of copies survived. Very good tight copy bound in the original gilt-stamped cloth with dust-soiling and light general wear without dust jacket. Enclosed in a custom morocco and cloth box.

RACKHAM, Arthur
1916. Original Watercolor Drawing from "The Allies' Fairy Book" RACKHAM, Arthur, [artist]. "Cesarino and the Dragon". London: 1916. Original fine pen and ink and watercolor from "The Allies' Fairy Book." Measures 250 x 192 mm. Signed and dated 'ARackham 1916' on lower left corner. Mounted, framed and glazed. Image depicts Cesarino protecting his love while fighting a dragon with a sword and a knife in his hand. Meanwhile the dragon is fighting off a lion, a bear and a dog. Even the personified tress behind Cesarino appear to be helping scare away the dragon. This mythical and whimsical piece is very romantic despite all of the gore gong on. James Hamilton notes in his biography of Rackham that in this illustration 'Rackham combines his feelings of heraldry and the fantastic with his love of early Italian painting...The head of Cesarino is adapted from the head of the young horseman in Uccello's Battle of San Romano, a painting which Rackham recorded as being one of his favourites at the National Gallery in London.' "Cesarino and the Dragon' was used for the title-page of James Hamilton's biography of Arthur Rackham. Provenance: Probably item number 24 ("Fighting Dragons") from the Leicester Galleries Exhibition (number 284), December 1919; Sotheby's, 1 June 1989, lot 559; Sotheby's 11 December 2003, lot 277. Latimore and Haskell,. Riall,. Hamilton. HBS 67321. $35,000
