Elizabeth Buehrmann
Condition: Near Fine. Original Platinum Print photograph by Elizabeth "Bessie" Buehrmann, 1916. 9 x 7 inches with border and frame to measure 14 x 10.5 inches. A wonderful photo of a boy in a sailor outfit transfixed by a sunroom aquarium. The photograph is signed and dated in pencil below the print, which is on a textured canvas-like surface. A shadow around the print appears to be original, forming a sort of border or mat around the photograph. Original frame "from the Shops of the Purnell Art Company... Baltimore". Some wear to the verso but photograph is excellent. Elizabeth "Bessie" Buehrmann (c1886 - c1963) was an American photographer and artist who was one of the pioneers of taking formal portraits of people in their own homes rather than in a studio. Successful at a young age, she was accepted as an Associate Member in Alfred Stieglitz's important Photo-Secession at just 18 years old. In 1909 Stieglitz included three of her prints in the prominent National Arts Club exhibition which he organized. Another famous photographer, Robert Demachy, insisted her prints be included in an important show he was organizing in Paris the next year. A major show of hers opened at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1908, and 73 of her photographs are in the permanent collection of the Met. An excellent print by this major photographer.

Robert Graves
London: Privately Printed at the Chiswick Press. Condition: Very Good. First edition of author's second book, published in 1916 in very small number. 8vo, plain red wraps, 20pp, about very good copy with some tiredness to the edges, faint soil, most minor paper loss at spine ends, with bookplate of Percy Withers (1867-1945) to verso of front wrap. Minor association copy: both Withers and Graves were alumni of Somerville College (Oxford), and while Withers made his living as a medic and GP, he had literary ambitions and was friendly with A. E. Housman, Yeats, Edmund Blunden, Max Beerbohm, William Rothenstein, John and Paul Nash, and Alice Meynell, and thus had plenty of chance to interact with Graves, but it is not clear that they figured strongly in each other's lives. APOLLINAIRE Guillaume
Eugène Figuière & Cie. first edition on current paper despite a mention of second edition, punch of the press service on the second board.Precious autograph dedication signed by Guillaume Apollinaire: "to Lucien Rolmer, the cantor, the psychologist, his friend".Illustrated book of 46 portraits and reproductions of works by Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, Francis Picabia, Marcel Duchamp ...As one of the few defenders of Cubism since its inception, Apollinaire works to its dissemination and understanding through his columns and prefaces including the catalog of the exhibition of the Circle of Modern Art Le Havre, entitled The Three Virtues Plastics , taken again in introduction of Aesthetic Meditations. Unbeknownst to the poet, the publisher Eugene Figuiere highlights the subtitle The Cubist Painters . This timely modification will be decisive for the reception of the work. Thus, instead of mere "meditations", the text acquires, for the readers, the status of true Manifesto of Cubism and raises in this respect sometimes violent reactions (more still from the avant-garde circles than natural opponents to modern painting). But at the same time, it becomes one of the first important writings on Cubism, "defining the characteristics of the new pictorial movement: its spiritual 'climate', its ambitions, its historical necessity" and its international significance. A month later, Apollinaire published Alfines , with a frontispiece cubist portrait of the author by Picasso.A great friend of Apollinaire, the poet Lucien Rolmer, one month older, did not follow the same aesthe … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hans Christian Andersen
New York: Brentano's, 1916. Condition: Near fine. First American edition, quarto size, 320 pp. Hans Christian Andersen's (1805-1875) "Fairy Tales" have been beloved by both children and adults ever since they were first published, with some tales appearing as early as 1835. Often containing a moral story clothed in fantasy, but less dark than the Grimms' tales, they have been translated into 125 different languages and many of the stories have been adapted to stage and screen. One only has to give the names for the stories to infuse our minds: Thumbelina, The Emperor's New Clothes, The Ugly Duckling, The Snow Queen, and many more. This version illustrated by Irish artist Harry Clarke (1890-1931), who was apprenticed to his father in 1906, who was the head of a large firm of stained glass artists. Clarke's work can be compared to that of Aubrey Beardsley, Kay Nielson and Edmund Dulac, taken up during the tail end of what was considered the Golden Age of Illustration; his work was often imbued with a sinister atmosphere exemplified by Beardsley. "Fairy Tales..." was published shortly before his career-making work for Edgar Allan Poe's "Tales of Mystery and Imagination". The highly detailed drawings take on an almost psychedelic quality, far ahead of their time, and which with their eerie beauty still fascinate today. Clarke was also an accomplished stained glass artist, harking back to his early training, and his work can be seen in both secular and religious settings. DESCRIPTION: Original grey cloth titled and illustrated in black to the front board and backstrip, with an o … [Click Below for Full Description]

EINSTEIN, ALBERT
Leipzig: Barth, 1916. FIRST EDITION. FIRST EDITION, monograph issue in original wrappers, of Einstein's General Theory of Relativity. PMM 408. Einstein's General Theory of Relativity is a continuation and dramatic expansion of some of the ground-breaking ideas set forth in his 1905 paper on special relativity. Specifically, with general relativity, Einstein applied his revolutionary conceptions of time, space, and matter to all of the universe, and providing, for the first time the definitive reinterpretation of the Newtonian model.

"Whereas Special Relativity had brought under one set of laws the electromagnetic world of Maxwell and Newtonian mechanics as far as they applied to bodies in uniform relative motion, the General Theory did the same thing for bodies with the accelerated relative motion epitomized in the acceleration of gravity. But first it had been necessary for Einstein to develop the true nature of gravity from his principle of equivalence ... Basically, he proposed that gravity was a function of matter itself and that its effects were transmitted between contiguous portions of space-time ... Where matter exists, so does energy; the greater the mass of matter involved, the greater the effect of the energy which can be transmitted. In addition, gravity affected light ... exactly as it affected material particles. Thus the universe which Newton had seen, and for which he had constructed his apparently impeccable mechanical laws, was not the real universe ... Einstein's paper gave not only a corrected picture of the universe but also a fresh set of mathematic … [Click Below for Full Description]

San Francisco: 1916. Condition: Very Good binding. Quarto. Attractive printing of Cobden-Sanderson's influential treatise on book making, this by John Henry Nash. Bound in delicate laid paper over boards with a wraparound printed title label; paper at joints is splitting as is common. Accompanied by a later edition printed by students and faculty at University of Oregon, John Henry Nash Fine Arts Press (1933), and limited to 50 copies of which this is #29; this copy is bound in marbled paper over boards and titled in gold on the spine, quite a lovely edition that by no means looks to be student work; both housed in a clamshell. *** RARE - Very Good Condition - Uncut Pages*** Complete Works of Mark Twain Author's National Edition (1916 - 1920) Harper and Brothers (Green Cloth Bindings) I am pleased to present this literary treasury of Mark Twain's complete works, published by Harpers and Brothers around 1916. I acquired this beautiful collection many years ago from my grandmother's house in Wendell, WV. Judging from the excellent condition of the books, including the many uncut pages, it is highly suggestive that she never opened them. Nearly all of the books are close to perfect condition. Please refer to the photographs included above. There are a few copies with slight fading and spotting. Missing from this set is volume #25 "Christian Science." Each of the copies in this remarkable set are bound in green fabric and feature five panes of gilt stamping on the spine. The words "MARK TWAIN," along the with the volume's title and the word "HARPER'S" at the bottom. As mentioned already, many of the pages throughout the set are uncut. The top edges of the pages are gilded, while the side and bottom are ragged. The following volumes are contained in this set: The Innocents Abroad / The New Pilgrim's Progress (Volume 1) The Innocents Abroad / The New Pilgrim's Progress (Volume 2) A Tramp Abroad (Volume 1) A Tramp Abroad (Volume 2) Following the Equator (Volume 1) Following the Equator (Volume 2) Ruffing It (Volume 1) Ruffing It (Volume 2) Life on the Mississippi The Gilded Age (Volume 1) The Gilded Age (Volume 2) The Adventures of Tom Sawyer Huckleberry Finn Pudd'n Head Wilson The Prince and the Pauper … [Click Below for Full Description]

Twain, Mark]
New York: Harper, 1916. Softcover. Very Good. Softcover. Rare in original wrappers, complete in seven parts published May-November 1916. The Mysterious Stranger is a novel attempted by the author Mark Twain. He worked on it intermittently from 1897 through 1908. Twain wrote multiple versions of the story; each involves a supernatural character called "Satan" or "No. 44". All the versions remained unfinished. Harper's Magazine serialized the work posthumously, basing it on the last version, called No. 44. It was the only one of his four versions of the book to have an actual ending. Despite this, it is considered debatable that it could be called finished. Each issue has a different pictorial cover, including a portrait of Twain on the May issue. Condition is generally very good, with chipping, bumping and creasing to various issues. Interiors clean and bright. "Withdrawn from Oregon State Library" stamp on front of three issues. LIT/091318.
