Wien und M. Planck., Vierte Folge, Bde. 79-81. Entire issues 4, 6, 8, 13 and 18 . A fine and clean set. [Schrödinger's papers:] Pp. 361-376; Pp. 489-527; Pp. 734-756 (Bd. 79). Pp. 437-490 (Bd. 68). A major achievement in quantum physics, where Schrodinger mathematically treats quantum mechanical systems as wave phenomena and describes the time-evolution of a system's wave function. These papers had a profound effect, resulting in the emergence of wave mechanics. This would serve as the basis for Schrodinger contributions, with which he would go on to win the Nobel prize in Physics in 1933. Near Fine. [Attributes: First Edition]

Kipling, Rudyard
Doubleday, Page & Company, Garden City, NY, 1916. Copyright edition, preceding the first appearance in book form. Stapled card-bound in three octavo parts (I: Some Work in the Baltic, II: Business on the Sea of Marmora, III: Ravages and Repairs). Near fine. Then as now, no comprehensive copyright agreement obtained between the two largest anglophone book-markets: the U.K. and the U.S. As a British citizen -- Henry James enjoyed the best of both worlds -- Kipling could not publish works in America that were protected by copyright unless they were published in America first (no relation to the current administration's modus regendi). Thus Kipling and his agent Watt contrived to publish limited runs, sometimes as few as eight copies, with Doubleday in order to secure the American copyright while having the trade edition come out first in Britain. Thus these are the true first editions (see our other items in this category) of many of Kipling's stories in the 1910's and beyond. Verses relating to the travels and travails of British submarines and submariners. Eventually published as the second of a trilogy of Sea Warfare, preceded by The Fringes of the Fleet and followed by The Destroyers at Jutland. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Christopher Mathewson (August 12, 1880 – October 7, 1925), nicknamed Big Six , The Christian Gentleman , Matty , and The Gentleman's Hurler , was a Major League Baseball right-handed pitcher, who played 17 seasons with the New York Giants. He stood 6 feet 1 inch (1.85 m) tall and weighed 195 pounds (88 kg). He was among the most dominant pitchers in baseball history, and ranks in the all-time top 10 in several key pitching categories, including wins, shutouts, and ERA.[1] In fact, he is the only professional pitcher in history to rank in the top 10 both in career wins and career ERA, if taking 19th-century pitchers' statistics into account.[2] Otherwise, both Mathewson and Walter Johnson would hold that distinction.[3] In 1936, Mathewson was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame as one of its first five members.

Harry Clarke Monograph, No. 27. - Seltene erste Ausgabe der wohl schönsten englischen Ausgabe der Märchen. - Fairy Tales by Hans Christian Andersen was Clarke's first published commission. This book remains one of the scarcest and most sought after illustrated Andersen's fairy tales book. Clarke illustrated only ten books. - Harry Clarke (1889-1931) lived a tragically short, but highly successful life as an artist in Ireland. Despite his brief career, Clarke is widely considered one of the greatest European illustrators, alongside Arthur Rackham, Aubrey Beardsley, Kay Nielsen and Edmund Dulac. Known for his work in both illustration and in stained glass, he was instrumental in cementing Ireland's place in the Art Nouveau and Art Deco movements. - "Mr. Clarke brings to Hans Andersen an entirely fresh interpretation, and he appeals to the intellectual emotions of art-lovers, who will find in his work satisfaction of their craving for new and unconventional treatment of themes which may never be exhausted while the spirit of life exists in art. Mr. Clarke is a craftsman who devotes to each drawing an infinity of pains which is little less than marvelous, and it is difficult to know which to admire most-his fresh conceptions or his delicate and intricate detail." Condition Report:Pen & Ink Drawing: Pen and ink drawing on paper of Fukuyemon (the White Fox) by Arthur Rackham that was used on page 88 in The Allies Fairy book, first published in 1916. "The tales of this book, both written and illustrated by Dulac, were drawn from the folklore of Russia, England, Flanders, Belgium, Italy, France, Ireland, Serbia and Japan. Dulac was able to employ the full scope of his versatility in creating a national mood in each illustration. During this period of his work, Dulac had immersed himself in the artistic traditions of folklore. He was partly stimulated by his friendship with Yeats (whose interest in Celtic folklore was legendary) and partly awakened to ethnic themes by his 1913 cruise through the eastern Mediterranean. Also at this time he was influenced by his encounters with the Russian-born designer Léon Bakst and Bakst's stage work for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes" (Hughey). Hughey 47a. [Mexican Manuscript Cookbook]
[Mexico, 1916. [165]pp. In Spanish. Contemporary three-quarter gray cloth and marbled boards. Spine perished, moderate rubbing and wear to boards, binding cracked in a few places and resultantly tender. Contemporary stationery store label on front pastedown. Minor soiling to text. Overall good condition. A well-used Mexican manuscript cookbook from the early-20th century. Interestingly, the book has been used by at least two different authors, in a dos-à-dos fashion, with each author starting at one end of the book, and meeting in the middle. A girl or young woman named Bertha Garza and then later Bertha Renate has signed her name each way on the front free endpaper, and the cookbook may have belonged to her or her family. The dating of the text comes from a stationery store label affixed to the front pastedown, dated in print in August 1916. The author or authors of the present cookbook have included a wide variety of Mexican soups, salads, meat dishes, sandwiches, desserts, and more. There are also recipes for desserts, including pastel de chocolate, budin de chocolate, pastel de chinos (Chinese cake), platanas en dulce, bu … [Click Below for Full Description]

Publisher's blue cloth, somewhat rubbed at joints and extremities. . Octavo. Woodcut title-page. Some marginal toning and some toning on a few pages where newspaper clippings had been laid in. Homer, Treasurer. A very good, tight copy from the library of a WRC member, with accompanying contemporary material. The Woman's Relief Corps was founded in 1883 as an auxiliary of the Grand Army of the Republic, an advocacy group for veterans of the Union Army. The WRC specifically focused on establishing pensions for the women who provided medical care to the Union Army and on supporting the families of soldiers who had been killed or injured during the Civil War. In 1892, the WRC and its president, Annie Wittenmeyer (1827-1900), successfully lobbied Congress to pass the Army Nurses Pension Law, which granted pensions to Wittenmeyer and other Civil War nurses. Some state chapters of the WRC, like the New York chapter and the Pennsylvania chapter, operated care homes for elderly veterans, army nurses … [Click Below for Full Description]

Druck und Verlag von Friedr Vieweg and Son, Braunschweig, 1916. FIRST PRINTING IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS OF ONE OF EINSTEIN'S MAJOR WORKS: HIS FIRST PAPER ON THE DERIVATION OF PLANK'S LAW AND PROVIDING THE THEORETICAL BASIS FOR THE LASER. "Einstein commended the 'unparalleled boldness' of Planck's derivation of 1900, meaning not only the problem itself but also the fact that it was based on assumptions that were not entirely free of contradictions. Einstein now succeeded in the first of two papers in eliminating that flaw. More interesting than the derivation itself was the general character of his methods. Einstein proceeded from Niels Bohr's basic--and by then well tested--assumption that the electrons within an atom occupy a number of discrete energy states, and are able, through emission or absorption of radiation, to pass from one of those states to another. Added to this was an assumption of thermodynamic equilibrium between radiation field and atom, as well as a consideration of the 'classical' limiting case at high temperatures--and there was Planck's formula. This brief argument. also covers emission stimulated by the radiation field; thus the formulas already, by implication, contain the theory of the laser, though it was to take nearly half a century to be realized" (Folsing, Albert Einstein, 389). Weil *85. The "implication" containing the theory of the laser was more fully developed in his companion paper "On the Quantum Theory of Radiation" published a few weeks later. In the first paper, Einstein wrestled with the concept that the atomic emission of radiation coul … [Click Below for Full Description]

In Judex (Latin for "judge"), Feuillade furthered his vision of the dark, enigmatic anti-hero he introduced with the legendary Fantomas character, and utilized Musidora--who played the lead character Irma Vep in "Les Vampires"--as the villainess. Judex was a step forward from the criminal Fantomas, however, predicting pulp heroes to come, such as The Shadow and especially Batman in the US: he was a masterful fighter, an expert in disguise, and kept his headquarters in the subterranean passages beneath a ruined castle, lavishly outfitted with high tech gadgets. Feuillade shot "Judex" in 1914, but the outbreak of World War I delayed release in France until 1916, and wide release until 1917. Pictured here is Judex, cunning and silent, in a stunt scene where in he attempts what we suspect will be successful entry into an unsuspecting criminal's car while the vehicle is in motion. 11 x 9 inches. A few pinholes at the corners, else Near Fine. Hardy, The BFI Companion to Crime, p. 187-188.

Edwards, J. Gordon (director); William Shakespeare (play); Adrian Johnson (screenwriter); Theda Bara, Harry Hilliard, Glen White (starring)
Fort Lee, NJ: Fox Film, 1916. Vintage bifold program for Los Angeles' Clune's Theatres' two day 1916 engagement of the 1916 silent film starring Theda Bara, now lost, with a striking four color exterior and interior composite of five black and white studio still images. Clune's Theatre opened in 1909 and was located in Los Angeles at 107 W. 5th and 453 S. Main streets, seating 1000. The date of the theatre's demolition (to make way for the Rosslyn Hotel) is unclear, with some sources saying as early as 1915, others 1917. As this program features a 1916 film, the latter is apparently correct, making "Romeo and Juliet" one of its' last features. In 1916 film studios were celebrating the 300th anniversary of Shakespeare's death, and both Fox Film and Metro Pictures had each been vying to release their version of "Romeo and Juliet." Metro Picture's version, directed by John W. Noble and Francis X. Bushman, and starring Francis X. Bushman and Beverly Baye, was released just three days prior to the Fox Film version. Bushman would later claim when he saw Fox's version he was startled to see intertitles from his version used in the Fox version and that William Fox had spies working at Metro steal them. Theda Bara, who played Juliet, was a popular silent film star whose femme fatale roles earned her the nickname "The Vamp" and made more than 40 films between 1914 and 1926, most of which were lost in the 1937 Fox vault fire. Director James Gordon Edwards was Fox Film's premiere director and would direct all of Fox Film's big budget spectacles, including all of Theda Bara's films betw … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tipped to the rear endpaper is an envelope containing an autograph letter, signed, from Ellsworth to Peary, also dated February 17, in which he presents her with this copy and comments on the hunt and the writing of the book. Lincoln Ellsworth (1880-1951) is best known for his Polar explorations and his benefactions to the American Museum of Natural History. Here he describes his adventures hunting buffalo high in the Bitterroot Mountains of Montana in 1911. "The last good sized buffalo herd in this country belonged to a Mexican named Pablo and ranged on the Flathead Reservation in Montana. When the reservation was opened up for settlement, Pablo sold his herd of buffalos to the Canadian government. After a round-up of four years, some old outlaws were still at large. It was these that Ellsworth was permitted to hunt. He tells here a good story of a hunt lasting nearly three weeks in which he finally brought down one old veteran" - Streeter. The illustrations show scenes from the hunt and the text is highly descriptive o … [Click Below for Full Description]

The spine paper has had some restoration to the base and a few letters are missing (Wisde). A nice book.

Hi, This lot is an 1916 Original Wisden , Rebound with covers. The binding is a rebind but the outside boards look identical to that of a hardback, so not quite a a publishers rebind, but I've marked it up as such above as it is akin to it. This book is in Very good condition. There are a couple of marks to the front board but inside it is very white and clean , odd spot but very few, no trimming, a fabulous looking book, could be a 9/10,

Hi, This lot is an Original 1916 Hardback Wisden . Scarce. It is in Excellent condition. In fact it is as good as my own. I am quite lucky at the moment to own such beautiful WW1 Wisdens. This book has wonderful front gilt, the spine gilt would normally be described as faded but it was never on the book in the first place so it has nice gilt but without the gold leaf on top (as per normal). Barely a mark to the boards which are tall and clean. The pages inside are amazing, so very white without a spot, the yellow paste downs are excellent , a tinge of darkness to the top of the right hand page with an ink name tidily written and birth and death above Trumper obit title. I had to compare it against my own and it was a tie. A treat. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
