Hans Christian Andersen
New York: Brentano's, 1916. Condition: Near fine. First American edition, quarto size, 320 pp. Hans Christian Andersen's (1805-1875) "Fairy Tales" have been beloved by both children and adults ever since they were first published, with some tales appearing as early as 1835. Often containing a moral story clothed in fantasy, but less dark than the Grimms' tales, they have been translated into 125 different languages and many of the stories have been adapted to stage and screen. One only has to give the names for the stories to infuse our minds: Thumbelina, The Emperor's New Clothes, The Ugly Duckling, The Snow Queen, and many more. This version is illustrated by Irish artist Harry Clarke (1890-1931), who was apprenticed to his father, the head of a large firm of stained glass artists, in 1906. An accomplished glass artist whose work can be seen in both secular and religious settings, Clarke's illustrations can be compared to that of Aubrey Beardsley, Kay Nielson, and Edmund Dulac, taken up during the tail end of what was considered the Golden Age of Illustration; his work is often imbued with a sinister atmosphere also exemplified by Beardsley. "Fairy Tales.. . " was published shortly before Clarke's career-making work for Edgar Allan Poe's "Tales of Mystery and Imagination"; the highly detailed drawings take on an almost psychedelic quality, far ahead of their time, and their eerie beauty still fascinates today. DESCRIPTION: Full original grey cloth titled and illustrated in black to the front board and spine, with an oval-cut paper illustration mounted to the front board, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Yeats, W.B.; Pay, Edward (Transcribed by)
London: Form [24]p, original card covers, n.d. but 1916. Covers lightly foxed with a small grease spot to upper cover and another to lower cover, covers lightly soiled generally, couple of small tears to fore edge of upper and lower covers, small tear to fore edge of first page of poetry, otherwise fairly bright and clean. Without the printed slip to title. Printed in red and black. Number eighteen of an edition of two hundred. The poems are 'The Dawn'; 'On Woman'; 'The Fisherman'; 'The Hawk'; 'Memory'; 'The Thorn Tree'; 'The Phoenix' and 'There is a Queen in China'. Yeats did not like the illustrations, the designer was 'given' the poems at the request of Charles Ricketts, but Yeats described the red woman used as the frontispiece as "a brute", and Wade suggests that the slip was added to the title page to disassociate Yeats from the style of production. Wade 114. First Edition. Card Covers. Good. Illus. by Spare, Austin. 4to. Pamphlet.

Thomas James Cobden-Sanderson
San Francisco: John Henry Nash, 1916. Condition: Very Good binding. Quarto. Attractive printing of Cobden-Sanderson's influential treatise on book making, this by John Henry Nash. This is among the finest printings of The Ideal Book, as Nash had a sensibility in printing that was sympathetic to Cobden-Sanderson's. Bound in delicate laid paper over boards with a wraparound printed title label; paper at joints is splitting as is common. Accompanied by a later edition printed by students and faculty at University of Oregon, John Henry Nash Fine Arts Press (1933), and limited to 50 copies of which this is #29; this copy is bound in marbled paper over boards and titled in gold on the spine, quite a lovely edition that by no means looks to be student work; both housed in a clamshell. The first notebook is titled W Taylor Royal Flying Corps. 1916. 43296 and contains notes of Cable Splicing and 19 annotated pencil drawings of contemporary British, French and German aircraft. ROMANOV FAMILY: Maria and Kira, Grand Duchess Maria Kirillovna; Grand Duchess Kira Kirillovna; Aleksei Andreyevich Volkov; Vladimir de Etter; Sophie Vladimirovna Kleinmichel; Kropotoff Armfelt; Mary Petrie [Nicholas II - Nikolay Alexandrovich Romanov]
Album of Romanov letters, postcards, wax seals and vintage photographs compiled by a pre-revolutionary tutor to the children of the Imperial Romanov dynasty in the period just before the Russian Revolution swept the family aside. Mary Petrie put together this album as a memento of her time with the Romanovs both before and after she fled with members of the royal family into Finland in 1917. Petrie who was born in Russia to a British emigre family in 1881 has put the collection into a 1930s folio-sized scrapbook. The highlights include a pair of affectionate pre-revolutionary letters on Tsarskoye Selo (Tsar's Village where the family lived after being recalled to Russia by Nicholas II) headed paper from Grand Duchesses Maria and Kira Kirillovna. Written in Roman script on September 19th 1916 they are affectionate thank you notes for 'the peaches and pastilla it was very good of you all to think of us. Nana has just received your letter and thanks you. We hope you will come and have tea with us when you come to town. Much love, Maria.' The young Kira writes in similar terms noting that 'We went twice to see "pauline" when we were at Haiko' - the Finnish estate where the family would flee in the following year. Above the letters are half tone photographs of the family in Russia and in 1917 'with the Baby brother born at Haiko, Finland in 1917' which have been annotated in Petrie's hand. Opposite is a brief note in French from an unidentified 'Alise' and an autograph postcard from Kira, sent to 'Miss Petrie' at a Russian address and wishing her a Merry Christmas. Of particular … [Click Below for Full Description]

WORLD WAR ONE: Private later Acting Sergeant Walter Keeble
Autograph signed letter; two pages on Northampton General Hospital head note paper, dated 12th July 1916. Together with photographs of Keeble and his wife and a small number of documents including Demobilization Certificate. 62033 Private later Acting Sergeant Walter Keeble 2nd Battalion Middlesex Regiment went over the top on July the 1st 1916, taking part in perhaps the worst days action ever undertaken by the British Army. Advancing over Mash Valley near Ovilliers he was caught between two German lines, wounded on the 2nd he is left lying out with no food and little water until his rescue on the 7th. His account contained in what appears to be an uncensored letter to his wife describes his experiences "No food or water only rain water that I caught in my helmet" "The best bit of luck was I had no rifle or else I should not have been here now". "I think my poor old Batt. was wiped out" In fact the 2nd Battalion had around 650 casualties on the 1st July 1916. Together with small framed photographs of Walter, contemporary group postcard photo of his unit, note to him from a Lieutenant J.Kenneth Grayson and a photographic medallion with a small colour tinted photograph him in uniform and his wife on the reverse. The photograph of him and his wife, probably taken towards the end of the war shows her wearing the medallion. Surely an almost unique record of endurance, particularly unusual in being recorded first hand just a week later. All items contained in a specially made archive box.

DINGLE, Edwin J. and FRUIN, H.J.
Large folding map printed in black and red, 67 x 62 inches in six sections, mounted on linen and folded, enclosed in the original cloth case with printed title and paper label as key. Fine. The Asiatic Petroleum Company was a joint venture between the Shell and Royal Dutch oil companies and was founded in 1903. It operated throughout Asia from the start of the 20th. Century with its headquarters on the Bund in Shanghai. This map would appear to reflect the growing market for oil products throughout China, a market which, by the start of the Second World, had expanded to over 1000 sales outlets across some 20 provinces. Edwin Dingle, who was responsible for this map along with H.J.Fruin, lived in China for over twenty years and in 1917 published The New Atlas and Commercial Gazetteer of China which served as the standard reference for many years and was described as the " biggest and best book on the resources of China." A rare and highly detailed commercial map of China. The box containing the map is stamped " Travelling Engineer" which suggests that only a limited number of copies would have been produced specifically for the Asiatic Petroleum Co., thus accounting for its scarcity.

Beasts of Tarzan was originally published serially in five installments in the All-Story Magazine from May through June, 1914. In addition to the color pictorial dust jacket, this volume contains a frontispiece and illustrated title piece by St. John as well as numerous black and white illustrations throughout the text. Winston S. Churchill
Thomas Nelson & Sons, Ltd, 1916. The Story of the Malakand Field Force Winston S. Churchill London: Thomas Nelson & Sons, Ltd., 1916 Third edition, in dust jacket Condition: Near Fine Jacket Condition: Very Good plus This is an extraordinary copy - likely the best surviving example - of the Shilling Library edition of Churchill's first book. Bibliographically the third edition (after the first of 1898 and the second, Silver Library edition of 1899), this edition was billed as a "cheap edition" during the First World War - a momentous time for Churchill which saw him serve both in the Cabinet and on the Front. This edition is a small, attractive book measuring 6.25 x 4.25 inches, bound in a bright blue cloth with blind rule bordered front cover, gilt-printed spine, and illustrated endpapers. Six maps are retained from the first edition, and there are 383 pages of small type. The edition was diminutive and fragile, and surviving copies typically show pronounced wear, soiling, and toning. This copy is extraordinary first and foremost for retaining the extravagantly rare original dust jacket, which is printed in black and light yellowish on thin, white paper and features a striking black-and-white half-tone photograph of Churchill on the front face. We know of only four surviving dust jackets. This copy is by far the best of these four known examples, both the cleanest and the only one that is nearly complete. Losses are negligible - a .25 x 1 inch irregular chip at the upper front face, fractional chipping to a maximum depth of .125 inch at the base of the spine, and incidenta … [Click Below for Full Description]

1916. Le Tissage aux Cartons et son Utilisation Decorative dans l'Egypte Ancienne By A. Van Gennep et G. Jéquier The authors look into the costumes and textiles of Ancient Egypt and the possibility that the Egypians used the technique of tablet (or card) weaving. Although this has subsequently been proved not to be the case, it is, nevertheless, an exciting publication. Published in 1916 by Neuchatel: Delachaux & Niestle S. A., Editeurs, edited by A. van GENNEP and G. Jequier and signed by both authors, 'Le Tissage aux Cartons et son Utilisation Decorative dans l'Egypte Ancienne' is a very rare book, limited to 150 copies, 125 of which are numbered, with a further 25 copies lettered A - Z (not for sale). This copy bares the letter S. The book is written in French and includes 12 plates, comprising 5 mounted colour plates, 6 black and white collotype plates, and 1 plate mounted with 5 pleated silk ribbons in imitation of the original textiles. There are also 135 illustrations within the 131 pages of text, printed on handmade, untrimmed paper. The linen covered decoated boards are clean, bright and in fine condition. The binding is secure and tight. Inside, there is a short, neat annotation to the top corner of the first and second front free end-papers. Otherwise, the interior is clean, fresh and in fine condition. An absolutely stunning copy. This book is featured in Wigan Lane Books online bookstore.

[Twain, Mark]
New York: Harper, 1916. Softcover. Rare in original wrappers, complete in seven parts published May-November 1916. The Mysterious Stranger is a novel attempted by the author Mark Twain. He worked on it intermittently from 1897 through 1908. Twain wrote multiple versions of the story; each involves a supernatural character called "Satan" or "No. 44". All the versions remained unfinished. Harper's Magazine serialized the work posthumously, basing it on the last version, called No. 44. It was the only one of his four versions of the book to have an actual ending. Despite this, it is considered debatable that it could be called finished. Each issue has a different pictorial cover, including a portrait of Twain on the May issue. Condition is generally very good, with chipping, bumping and creasing to various issues. Interiors clean and bright. "Withdrawn from Oregon State Library" stamp on front of three issues. LIT/091318. Very Good.

Ogontz, Pennsylvania: Ogontz School, 1916. 7/21/2015. Very Good. First edition. Tall octavo. 177, [3]pp. Illustrated with tipped-in gelatin silver photographs. Embossed white calf. Silk-lined endpapers. A couple of small scrapes on the boards, modest dampstain in margins of the first several leaves, the white boards predictably a bit soiled, a very good copy of a very elaborately prepared woman's school yearbook, with a separate portrait of each student tipped-in with signatures in facsimile, as well as other images of noted faculty, the campus, group shots, and activities. Otherwise blank pages in the rear for engagements, marriages, births, and deaths! The Ogontz School was an exclusive girl's college which used the estate of Jay Cooke as its campus. In the following year, 1917, the formidable headmistress Abby A. Sutherland (pictured in the book), purchased another track of land and moved the school (that year was also notable as Amelia Earhart joined the Senior Class, although she did not graduate). As deluxe a yearbook for a woman's college as we've seen.

Toroczkai-Wigand, Ede
Táltos, Budapest, 1916. First edition. Initials printed in red. In original illustrated hard paper. 29, (3) p. and 16 plates. In this work Toroczkai-Wigand gathers his knowledge on Transylvanian architecture and culture. Written in the dialect of Székely Land. He also formulates his own artistic ideas and identifies its sources with sixteen full page illustration of architectural drawings in the unique Transylvanian Art Nouveau style. Ede Toroczkai-Wigand (1869-1945) was a Hungarian architect and designer of decorative art. The thoughts of John Ruskin and the Arts and Crafts Movement had a major influence on him. Toroczkai-Wigand had the idea that art, architecture, folk customs and language is a complex structure and this complexity and "holism" reflecting in the unique character of his works. Beside being a prolific architect and designer, who was awarded at many international exhibitions (Paris, 1900; Torino, 1902; St. Louis, 1904), Toroczkai-Wigand published bibliophilic books, partly on his art and partly about the art, architecture and the folk tales of the Székelys in Transylvania. In these publications he combined the content and the typography of the print into a special unity, in the manner of the unique Transylvanian Art Nouveau style.
