MORGAN, Emanuel and Anne Knish [pseud. Witter Bynner and Arthur
Mitchell Kennerly, 1916. First Edition. Small 8vo. Original printed boards. Covers rubbed with some damping. Internally near fine with damping only faintly continuing to first few leaves. Good overall. INSCRIBED by Witter Bynner to Karl Shapiro: "Emanuel Morgan / has asked me to / send Karl Shapiro / this stray copy / of Spectra which / has turned up / in my house. / So here it goes, / with greetings / from / Witter Bynner / Santa Fe / March 11 / 1953." An excellent association of this infamous poetic hoax, inscribed by Witter Bynner to Karl Shapiro. Shapiro served as Poet Laureate at the Library of Congress, the same entity which administers the Witter Bynner Prize, given each year to two poets selected by the current Poet Laureate. A satire directed at the experimental "isms" invented and championed by Ezra Pound from 1912-1915, Imagism & Vorticism, SPECTRA instead was mistaken as that which is was attempting to mock: a new verse movement. Bely, Andrei
Tipografiya Stasyulevicha, Petrograd, 1916. First edition, during the author's lifetime. In an original publisher's cover, preserved in a box. Andrei Bely (real name Boris Nikolaevich Bugaev, 1880-1934), Russian writer, philologist, philosopher, symbolist theorist. He was probably the most amazing and unusual writer and thinker of the Silver Age, in whose worldview mathematics and natural sciences intertwined with mysticism and occultism, philosophy and poetry. His acute sense of the world crisis turned into apocalyptic expectations, with hopes of restoring humanity's historical optimism. The novel "Petersburg" has long been recognized as one of the outstanding works of the Russian symbolism. The author began active work on the novel in 1912, being, according to the memoirs of the author himself, in a state of "influx". The time and place of the action is St Petersburg in the initial period of the First Russian Revolution (1905). In the novel, there is a secret terrorist organization, a major dignitary Apollon Apollonovich Ableukhov, who should become its victim, agents of the secret police and other characters. The plot of the novel is partly autobiographical. According to the writer Yevgeny Zamyatin, in this book by A. Bely, Petersburg for the first time after N. V. Gogol and F. M. Dostoevsky found its true artist. 409p. Publisher's grey wrappers. Provenance: Eden Martin, prominent American collector. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

[Chicago, 1916. Very good.. [12]pp. Original pictorial self-wrappers, stapled. Small contemporary publisher's notice affixed to front wrap. Light wear and dust soiling. Rare promotional for the Salt Lake Route by rail to Los Angeles, and for the attractions of the city itself, published circa 1916. The text touts the population and commerical growth of Los Angeles from the turn of the 20th century, its many attractions, and year-round seasonability. The last leaf provides a summary of ways to arrive on the West Coast via the Salt Lake Route through Las Vegas from Chicago, Minneapolis, and Denver, and prints a full-page map of the route and intermediate stops across Utah, Southern Nevada, and Southern California. The Salt Lake Route was operated by the Los Angeles & Salt Lake Railroad, whose line between the two cities was completed in 1905 under the ownership and direction of Montana mining baron William A. Clark, and as a result it was also known informally as the "Clark Road." With many photographic reproductions of Los Angeles and its attractions just after World War I, including many of the grand Southern California resorts of the day. Not in OCLC.

GAILLARD A.
1916.]. Landscape format watercolour album, 24 x 16 cm, with pen and ink titling design ?Album des Dessins? on front cover. c. 60 leaves, the first 23 with mounted pen and ink drawings, captioned and with trompe l'oeil framing rules. [Vaubecourt, A vigorous and primitive album, with the pencil note on the front endpaper, presumably by its author, ?A. Gaillard . commencé le 20 décembre 1916.? It appears to have been used throughout the war, as the last entry represents a bloodthirsty collaboration of French and American soldiers at the Battle of Thierry. The majority of the drawings relate to Vaubecourt, on the Meuse, with before and after drawings, particularly of the ruined church, but other neighbouring villages such as Louppy-le-Petit and Sermaize. There's no indication that Gaillard was a participant and it is likely that he or she was a local resident. Among pictures of ruined architecture we have a ?groupe de prisonniers subissant une interrogation?, a crashed zeppelin and a crashed German plane, and a version of the mythical ?L'enfant au fusil de Bois?, when the Germans were supposed to have executed a child by firing squad for having a wooden gun.

Joyce, James
New York: B. W. Huebsch, 1916. First edition. A Very Good copy with bright gilt on the spine. Shelfwear to extremities. Front inner hinge tender, but holding. Some offsetting to front endpaper and early ownership signature to front pastedown. Page 16 with slight skinning affecting several lines of text. The author's first novel, a semi-autobiographical work, that laid the groundwork for his masterpiece, "Ulysses." This novel is more accessible than some of his later work. It tracks the physical, emotional and psychological growth of a young Joyce as he searches for his voice and his path in life, culminating with the decision to pursue his art abroad: "I go to encounter for the millionth time the reality of experience and to forge in the smithy of my soul the uncreated conscience of my race." "It is a mosaic of jagged fragments that does altogether render with extreme completeness the growth of a rather secretive, imaginative boy in Dublin. The technique is startling, but on the whole it succeeds." -- H. G. Wells. Very Good. Very Good.

Muir, John
Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston, 1916. First edition of this work by Muir. Octavo, original green cloth, color pictorial cover label, lettered in white, top edge gilt. Edited with an introduction by William Frederic Bad`e. Illustrated with several plates from photographs, including a frontispiece portrait with tissue guard; map. In near fine condition with light rubbing. With the original booklet for Muir's book Travels in Alaska laid in. An exceptional example. In 1867, John Muir, age twenty-eight, was blinded in an industrial accident. He lay in bed for two weeks wondering if he would ever see again. When his sight miraculously returned, Muir resolved to devote all his time to the great passion of his life -- studying plants. He quit his job in an Indiana manufacturing plant, said good-bye to his family, and set out alone to walk to the Gulf of Mexico, sketching tropical plants along the way. He kept a journal of this thousand-mile walk and near the end of his life, now famous as a conservation warrior and literary celebrity, sent a typescript of it to his publisher. The result is a wonderful portrait of a young man in search of himself and a particularly vivid portrait of the post-war American South. Here is the young Muir talking with freed slaves and former Confederate soldiers, pondering the uses of electricity, exploring Mammoth Cave, sleeping in a Savannah cemetery, delirious with malarial fever in the home of strangers at Cedar Key, traveling to Havana, Cuba, and sailing to San Francisco Bay. Once in California, Muir promptly set out for Yosemite Valley -- 200 mil … [Click Below for Full Description]

(DESIGN). HOW, Winifred.
England, 1916. Ink, wash and pencil designs on 56 sheets, with some additional fabric and print samples. The sheets of varying sizes (the largest c. 550 × 380 mm). Manuscript captions and annotations in pencil. A few sheets folded, most with pinholes at each corner. Loose in a folder. A design portfolio, mostly dating from the last years of the Great War: early work by a progressive young female designer, Winifred How, made at a so-far unidentified British college of art and design. The formal and informal elements of the collection, which includes many superb pencil and wash designs together with fabric and wallpaper samples, bridge the Arts and Crafts movement of the early century and a striking emergent modernism. These spectacular designs are mostly formal exercises in pattern design, with an emphasis on the construction of repeating patterns, interchange, and counterchange (designs in which a certain colour of a motif and its ground are reversed in another part of the design). Also included are a number of more experimental designs, strikingly modernist, usually single panels, some elements of which are incorporated into the formal exercises. In several cases the time taken to make each sheet is noted (usually several hours), reflecting the commercial background of this formal training. The manuscript captions provide a key to each assignment, and some of the designs are marked with tutor's comments ('good', 'beautiful', excellent', 'all units too separate', 'good set but panel decoration has a sense of dropping at the centre', 'you want to try and get your units to u … [Click Below for Full Description]

Paris, (Paul Birault), 1916. Références : É-A. Hubert, Bibliographie des écrits de Pierre Reverdy, n° 5. - P. Reverdy, Œuvres complètes, I, 2010, pp. XII-XIII & 1285. - En français dans le texte, n° 347, une notice d'É.-A. Hubert: "Inclassable Reverdy. Les historiens de la littérature se résignent d'ordinaire à le situer 'en marge', alors qu'il est au centre".

STEPHENS, James
New York: The Macmillan Company, 1916. 'JS' Bound by 'AS' [BINDING]. STEPHENS, James. Green Branches. New York: The Macmillan Company, 1916. First American Edition. Limited to 500 copies. Octavo (8 3/16 x 5 11/16 inches; 208 x 145 mm.). 32 unnumbered leaves printed on one side only. Bound in 1922, stamp-signed "A - S 1922" in gilt on rear turn-in. Full dark green levant morocco, covers decoratively tooled in gilt with a framework of flowers and stems surrounding a gilt ruled border which in turn surrounds another gilt border with similar floral tools in the corners and top and lower edges. Spine with five raised bands, decoratively tooled with the same floral design in compartments. Gilt ruled board edges, and wide turn-ins with triple gilt rules and the same gilt flower ornaments in the corners, all edges gilt. Minimal darkening to spine. A very fine example. Although we have been unable to ascertain the identity of "A - S" this binding is most likely by a student of one of the great binders of the early twentieth century. It is unusual inasmuch as all of the six spine panels have been decoratively tooled in gilt - but with no lettering. James Stephens (1880-1950) was an Irish novelist and poet. By the early 1900s James was increasingly inclined to socialism and the Irish language and by 1912 was a dedicated Irish Republican. He was a close friend of the 1916 leader Thomas MacDonagh, who was then editor of "The Irish Review" and deputy headmaster in St Enda's, the radical bilingual school run by P.H. "The tales of this book, both written and illustrated by Dulac, were drawn from the folklore of Russia, England, Flanders, Belgium, Italy, France, Ireland, Serbia and Japan. Dulac was able to employ the full scope of his versatility in creating a national mood in each illustration. During this period of his work, Dulac had immersed himself in the artistic traditions of folklore. He was partly stimulated by his friendship with Yeats (whose interest in Celtic folklore was legendary) and partly awakened to ethnic themes by his 1913 cruise through the eastern Mediterranean. Also at this time he was influenced by his encounters with the Russian-born designer Léon Bakst and B … [Click Below for Full Description]

Edition DeLuxe Limited to 525 numbered copies signed by the artist, this being "one of three over-copies". Quarto (9 11/16 x 7 3/8 inches; 246 x 187 mm.). xxii, 121, [1], [4, blank] pp. Twelve color plates mounted on heavy brown paper, with descriptive tissue guards printed in red, and twenty-four drawings in black and white. Publisher's blue buckram, front cover and spine pictorially stamped and lettered in gilt, decorative end-papers, top edge gilt, others uncut. Corners slightly bumped, covers a little soiled, otherwise an excellent copy. Three of the tipped-in color plates (frontispiece, facing p. 18 & p.94 have white borders and are from the smaller format first trade edition. The most probable explanation is that the publisher decided to bind up this "one of three over-copies" but was short of three of the color plates which they substituted with the smaller ones from the trade edition. [Click Below for Full Description]

Service for Christmas 1923 on the front free endpaper. 20 colour plates tipped in. Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell was one of the school of painters named the "Scottish Colourists" along with John Peploe, G.L. Hunter and J.D. Fergusson. George Service (though he was more commonly referred to by his initials) was a co-owner of the Scottish shipping firm Prentice, Service and Henderson and was a lifelong patron of the arts, Cadell in particular. Service acquired many of his paintings and was especially interested in his views of Iona. Cadell's 1933 portrait of Service came up for sale in the Edinburgh saleroom of Lyon and Turnbull in December 2018 and other paintings by Cadell with the Service provenance have appeared for sale in major auction houses. This work brings together a series of wartime drawings of seaman and soldiers - Cadell having served in the 9th Argyll, 9th Royal Scots and the Sutherland Highlanders during World War One.
