Texas]: Trlica, John P., photographer
Jno. P. Trlica, Granger, Tx, 1916. Panoramic photograph, 8 x 31 1/2 inches. A few short tears and nicks in the edges. Noticeable foxing on verso, minor surface wear, some soiling. Overall good plus. An interesting yard-long photograph of the members of a Texas-based fraternal organization for Czech immigrants, taken by notable Czech- Texan photographer John P. Trlica who was himself a member of the same organization. The title of the photograph is printed in Czech, but indicates that the image features the members of the seventh congress of the Slovanska Podporujici Jednota Statu Texas (SPJST) in Galveston in 1916, essentially a state convention for the organization. A handful of women, likely the wives of some of the members, are shown at right edge of the image. A first-generation Czech-Texan, photographer John P. Trlica was born in Hallettsville, Texas in 1882. After working as a cotton picker, a salesman, and a bookkeeper for a general store in his late-teens and twenties, Trlica grew fascinated with the camera in the first decade of the 20th century. Each summer between 1909 and 1915, he attended the Eastman Kodak traveling school, and then ran his own studio until 1922, at which time he sold the business and opened a general goods store in Granger. Unable to shake the siren call of the photographer's life, Trlica opened another photography studio in Granger two years later, and found much more success with this second incarnation. The present photograph carries the hallmarks of a photographer in the early years of his craft. Some of the figures at left appear a bit bl … [Click Below for Full Description]

SHACKLETON Sir Ernest.; WAR OFFICE, Intelligence Division
1916. Corrected edition. 530 by 670mm. Chromolithographed map. Scale: 1:6,300,000. Mounted and framed with perspex glaze, bronze plaque to lower edge. Inscribed in ink on the lower right hand margin. Bilateral old folds otherwise very good. Intelligence Division War Office, Corrected and Printed for the Admiralty War Staff, February An signed relic of Shackleton's wartime service. The recipient, Elizabeth Dawson-Lambton, was a major benefactor of the Endurance Expedition, with a glacier on the Weddell Sea named in her honour. Sir Ernest Shackleton's Endurance Expedition departed for the Antarctic continent on August 4th 1914, as the dark clouds of the First World War were gathering. Having received special dispensation from the Admiralty not to abort the mission in favour of war work, the crew remerged in June 1916 to a world much changed. As if the epic ordeal they had been through in the south was not enough, after a brief reprise back home, the majority of the crew immediately enlisted for military or naval service. Shackleton's superior leadership skills and experience in frozen conditions made him a perfect candidate to join the British Expeditionary Force campaign against the Bolsheviks in Archangel and Murmansk. The Arctic Russian frontier brought Allied troops into contact with harsher and more extreme conditions than any other theatre of the war. Shackleton's appointment as a temporary Major to the Syren force not only boosted morale considerably, but he also brought invaluable expertise to the job of organising winter supplies and equipment, and the use of sledges … [Click Below for Full Description]

[EINSTEIN, ALBERT]. SCHWARZSCHILD, KARL
Berlin: Verlag der Königlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften, 1916. First edition. RARE FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPPERS OF KARL SCHWARSCHILD'S DISCOVERY OF THE FIRST EXACT SOLUTION TO THE FIELD EQUATIONS OF EINSTEIN'S GENERAL THEORY OF RELATIVITY -- A SOLUTION THAT PROVIDED THE KEY TO PREDICTING THE ORBITS OF PLANETS AND SATELLITES. By the end of 1915, Albert Einstein had published the final version of the field equation of general relativity (the "Einstein Field Equation", or EFE), which relates distributions of matter and energy to the geometry of the spacetime surrounding those distributions. A key remaining task was developing solutions to the equation -- i.e., descriptions of specific spacetime geometries that, when associated with specific distributions of matter and energy, satisfy the EFE. This was no trivial task. The EFE actually represents, in a highly compressed notation, ten separate second-order differential equations. "As differential equations, [the EFEs] are extremely complicated; the Ricci scalar and tensor are contractions of the Riemann tensor, which involves derivatives and products of the Christoffel symbols, which in turn involve the inverse metric and derivatives of the metric. ... The equations are also nonlinear .... It is therefore very difficult to solve [the EFE] in any sort of generality ...." (Sean M. Carroll, Spacetime and Geometry: An Introduction to General Relativity, 2004). A solution to the EFE takes the form of a "metric tensor" (or "metric" for short) -- a mathematical description of a particular spacetime geometry. The metric can be … [Click Below for Full Description]

The top edge is trimmed, while the fore and bottom edges are untrimmed. A few slight marks on the upper board and the spine is a little browned but a near fine, very firm copy. Loosely inserted is a newspaper clipping concerning Alick Schepeler. Complete with its cardboard slip case, with a printed title label on one edge. It looks like it has the same grey paper as on the book but this is a poor example which is rather worn, with fading and darkening and has some loss of a little over one inch from one edge. However it has fulfilled its purpose of keeping the book protected, and to find one with the book appears to be a rare occurrence: I can't trace another! Wade 112. Rubbing, edgewear, a couple pages detached but present thus very good album with fine photographs. A family photo album from Rochester, New York in 1909 through to 1916. The photo album features a full family of grandparents, parents, and children living together. A large amount of the photographs are artistically cut into shapes such as circles, diamonds, and rectangles with rounded corners. There are several pictures of the small town they lived in with dirt streets and open fields. Most of the photos feature the family standing together smiling in front of their home or visiting different locations like the beach and the city. Some of the locations include Cherry Beach and Walpole Island in Canada, Algonac Michigan; and Chicago. Several pictures are of the woman making silly faces and running around the woods. Some pictures are of the women playing baseball with makeshift bases and outfits. There are also pictures of a woman with her hair down and out of a bun, dancing around in a small park. Some of the photos that feature the men in the family show them with their automobiles driving around. There are also a couple of pictures of young men with possible gay overtones exploring the city, holding hands, and with one image where two boys are seemingly about to kiss. Many of the photos show the young children … [Click Below for Full Description]

Imperial 8vo (26,5:19 cm). 2 pages, numbered 768-769. Letterpress on machine paper, in original publisher's brochure on orange-coloured stock with black title printing. First separate printing in the original wrappers, of Einstein's obituary for German astronomer and physicist Karl Schwarzschild, a pioneer in astrophysics. Edition: Schwarzschild had provided the first exact solution to the Einstein field equations of general relativity, for the limited case of a single spherical non-rotating mass, which he had accomplished in 1915, the same year that Einstein first introduced his »Theory of General Relativity«. Condition: Wrappers minimally torn at margins, otherwise very well preserved copy indeed, uncut thus obviously not opened at all. Rarity: ABPC (1973ff.) and APO (1988ff.) record only 1 copy of this edition at auction (2014). Reference: Schilpp-Shields 100; Weil 87.

First separate printing in the original wrappers, of this important paper by Einstein, in which he proposend for the first time the existence of gravitational waves according to his Theory of General Relativity, which he had completed just a few months earlier, in early Dec. 1915. Edition: Gravitational radiation should be observed and empirically proved much later. In 1993 the Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded for their indirect observation, and only in 2015 they could be finally observed directly. Imperial 8vo (25,2:17,2 cm), 6 pages, numbered 184-188 [1]. Letterpress on machine paper, in original publisher's brochure on orange-coloured stock with black title printing. First offprint in the original wrappers of this important paper by Einstein about electromagnetism. Condition: Wrappers minimally dusty, otherwise very well preserved copy. Rarity: According to Weil early offprints of Einstein's papers may also be qualified as original and also highly collectable editions, however they were printed in a certain, but still small print run for commercial use (mainly to sell them to fellow natural scientists): „No doubt, the first appearance in a periodical is the „original edition", but I have to leave it open for collectors, librarians and others to decide whether these offprints in wrappers, mostly with a printed title on them (especially in the »Sitzungsberichte der Königlich Preussischen Akademie der Wissenschaften«) are also „original editions". With 1 cliché repro of Mach's signed photo portrait. Leipzig: Hirzel (August Pries) 1916. 4mo (27,5:19,5). 4 pages. Letterpress on machine paper, in original publisher's brochure on brown stock with black title printing. True author's presentation offprint in the original wrappers, of Einstein's obituary for Austrian physicist and philosopher Ernst Mach. Edition: Mach is particularly known as influential philosopher of science for his contemporaries. Through his criticism of Newton's theories of space and time he for instance foreshadowed Einstein's theory of relativity. Condition: Corners and margins of wrappers with some very small faults, cover slightly water-stained, paper minimally foxy, otherwise solid copy. Rarity: Present copy is imprinted „Überreicht vom Verfasser" (presented by the author) on the upper right corner of the first page, which indicates it's utmost rarity, as author's presentation offprints of Einstein papers, from any journal or any period, were printed in a small print run for the use of the author only. ABPC (1973ff.) and APO (1988ff.) show no record at all. Reference: Collected Papers, vol. 6, 29; Schilpp-Shields 96; Weil 89.
