Guido Balsamo Stella
1916. Etching (630 x 462 mm) A splendid and fascinating signed etching. Evocative depiction of the construction of a bridge in Stockholm, the city in which the artist studied for a few years. The print in excellent condition, chosen as the cover for the catalogue of the exhibition held in Bassano del Grappa in 1987-1988. The Turin-born Guido Balsamo Stella studied at the Academies of Munich and Stockholm. His early artistic activity – undertaken in Germany and Sweden, to which he travelled in 1914 – was that of a fresco painter and decorator, as well as engraver. In Orrefors he saw the rise in the famous production of engraved glass, a technique that he was able to study thanks to his friendship with Edward Hald (one of the major promoters of the Swedish manufactory) and explore further by visiting factories in Bohemia. Returning to Italy, he devoted himself in particular to engraving (landscapes, ex libris, etc.), to book illustration and to wooden sculpture. He also worked for the glassmakers of Murano, producing the drawings for a series of blown glass works displayed at the 1930 Triennale di Monza and for the so-called “chemical glassware” (inspired by test tubes, retorts, funnels, etc.), which enjoyed a moment of particular popularity. Balsamo Stella participated in numerous Italian and foreign exhibitions (gold medal at the 1911 Munich International Exhibition, Geri Boralevi Gallery, Venice, July-August 1920, Monza Biennale and Triennale of decorative arts from 1923, International Exhibition of Decorative Arts in Paris 1925, Second International Exhibition of Modern E … [Click Below for Full Description]

APOLLINAIRE Guillaume
Paris: APOLLINAIRE Guillaume, 1916. first edition on current paper despite a mention of second edition, punch of the press service on the second board.Precious autograph dedication signed by Guillaume Apollinaire: "to Lucien Rolmer, the cantor, the psychologist, his friend".Illustrated book of 46 portraits and reproductions of works by Georges Braque, Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, Francis Picabia, Marcel Duchamp ...As one of the few defenders of Cubism since its inception, Apollinaire works to its dissemination and understanding through his columns and prefaces including the catalog of the exhibition of the Circle of Modern Art Le Havre, entitled The Three Virtues Plastics , taken again in introduction of Aesthetic Meditations. Unbeknownst to the poet, the publisher Eugene Figuiere highlights the subtitle The Cubist Painters . This timely modification will be decisive for the reception of the work. Thus, instead of mere "meditations", the text acquires, for the readers, the status of true Manifesto of Cubism and raises in this respect sometimes violent reactions (more still from the avant-garde circles than natural opponents to modern painting). But at the same time, it becomes one of the first important writings on Cubism, "defining the characteristics of the new pictorial movement: its spiritual 'climate', its ambitions, its historical necessity" and its international significance. A month later, Apollinaire published Alfines , with a frontispiece cubist portrait of the author by Picasso.A great friend of Apollinaire, the poet Lucien Rolmer, one month older, did not follow th … [Click Below for Full Description]

AGNON, Shmuel Yosef; ELIASBERG, Ahron
Berlin Judischer Verlag, 1916. First edition. 8vo. Original pictorial cloth designed by Berlin Secession artist Hugo Krayn. A fine copy. A couple of marks to the lower cover, but otherwise a remarkably clean and bright copy of a fragile book. Additional pictorial title pages in both Hebrew and German, sixteen black and white plates A scarce anthology edited by Nobel Laureate Shmuel Yosef Agnon six years prior to his first major publication The Bridal Canopy (1922). The collection attempts to correct the strereotypical perception of Polish Jewry in the West and comprises short stories, accounts of legal restrictions, an architectural study of Polish synagogues, as well as numerous proverbs and other miscellanea. Agnon was awarded the Nobel Prize "for his profoundly characteristic narrative art with motifs from the life of the Jewish people", and the chief interest in this anthology is the development of his thought on Jewish identity. As well as editing the volume he contributes three stories focused on the formation of the identity of Polish Jewry that foreshadow his later work. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The three men, along with Henry Ford, began a series of several camping trips in the previous year, and would continue the tradition until 1924. Calling themselves the Four Vagabonds, they travelled with plenty of supplies, often carried by Ford's own automobiles, and accompanied by Ford Motor Company photographers who were tasked with documenting the trip. Though Ford himself could not join the 1916 expedition, the rest of the group enjoyed the benefit of one of his Model Ts. This copy was gifted to Firestone's personal driver, who passed the book down through his family, whe … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hans Christian Andersen
New York: Brentano's, 1916. Condition: Near fine. First American edition, quarto size, 320 pp. Hans Christian Andersen's (1805-1875) "Fairy Tales" have been beloved by both children and adults ever since they were first published, with some tales appearing as early as 1835. Often containing a moral story clothed in fantasy, but less dark than the Grimms' tales, they have been translated into 125 different languages and many of the stories have been adapted to stage and screen. One only has to give the names for the stories to infuse our minds: Thumbelina, The Emperor's New Clothes, The Ugly Duckling, The Snow Queen, and many more. This version is illustrated by Irish artist Harry Clarke (1890-1931), who was apprenticed to his father, the head of a large firm of stained glass artists, in 1906. An accomplished glass artist whose work can be seen in both secular and religious settings, Clarke's illustrations can be compared to that of Aubrey Beardsley, Kay Nielson, and Edmund Dulac, taken up during the tail end of what was considered the Golden Age of Illustration; his work is often imbued with a sinister atmosphere also exemplified by Beardsley. "Fairy Tales.. . " was published shortly before Clarke's career-making work for Edgar Allan Poe's "Tales of Mystery and Imagination"; the highly detailed drawings take on an almost psychedelic quality, far ahead of their time, and their eerie beauty still fascinates today. DESCRIPTION: Full original grey cloth titled and illustrated in black to the front board and spine, with an oval-cut paper illustration mounted to the front board, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Yeats, W.B.; Pay, Edward (Transcribed by)
London: Form [24]p, original card covers, n.d. but 1916. Covers lightly foxed with a small grease spot to upper cover and another to lower cover, covers lightly soiled generally, couple of small tears to fore edge of upper and lower covers, small tear to fore edge of first page of poetry, otherwise fairly bright and clean. Without the printed slip to title. Printed in red and black. Number eighteen of an edition of two hundred. The poems are 'The Dawn'; 'On Woman'; 'The Fisherman'; 'The Hawk'; 'Memory'; 'The Thorn Tree'; 'The Phoenix' and 'There is a Queen in China'. Yeats did not like the illustrations, the designer was 'given' the poems at the request of Charles Ricketts, but Yeats described the red woman used as the frontispiece as "a brute", and Wade suggests that the slip was added to the title page to disassociate Yeats from the style of production. Wade 114. First Edition. Card Covers. Good. Illus. by Spare, Austin. 4to. Pamphlet.

Thomas James Cobden-Sanderson
San Francisco: John Henry Nash, 1916. Condition: Very Good binding. Quarto. Attractive printing of Cobden-Sanderson's influential treatise on book making, this by John Henry Nash. This is among the finest printings of The Ideal Book, as Nash had a sensibility in printing that was sympathetic to Cobden-Sanderson's. Bound in delicate laid paper over boards with a wraparound printed title label; paper at joints is splitting as is common. Accompanied by a later edition printed by students and faculty at University of Oregon, John Henry Nash Fine Arts Press (1933), and limited to 50 copies of which this is #29; this copy is bound in marbled paper over boards and titled in gold on the spine, quite a lovely edition that by no means looks to be student work; both housed in a clamshell.
