Graves, Robert
London: Privately Printed at the Chiswick Press. First edition of author's second book, published in 1916 in very small number. 8vo, plain red wraps, 20pp, about very good copy with some tiredness to the edges, faint soil, most minor paper loss at spine ends, with bookplate of Percy Withers (1867-1945) to verso of front wrap. Minor association copy: both Withers and Graves were alumni of Somerville College (Oxford), and while Withers made his living as a medic and GP, he had literary ambitions and was friendly with A. E. Housman, Yeats, Edmund Blunden, Max Beerbohm, William Rothenstein, John and Paul Nash, and Alice Meynell, and thus had plenty of chance to interact with Graves, but it is not clear that they figured strongly in each other's lives. Very Good.

Edizioni Futuriste di Poesia, 1916. First Italian Edition, preceding all others. A book length expansion of the musical theories first put forth by Russolo in a 1913 manifesto to fellow Futurist composer Francesco Balilla Pratella. Text in Italian. Perhaps the earliest treatise on the use of noise as an element in modern music, and one that would come to influence countless musicians and movements, including John Cage and Pierre Schaeffer. [Twain, Mark]
New York: Harper, 1916. Softcover. Rare in original wrappers, complete in seven parts published May-November 1916. The Mysterious Stranger is a novel attempted by the author Mark Twain. He worked on it intermittently from 1897 through 1908. Twain wrote multiple versions of the story; each involves a supernatural character called "Satan" or "No. 44". All the versions remained unfinished. Harper's Magazine serialized the work posthumously, basing it on the last version, called No. 44. It was the only one of his four versions of the book to have an actual ending. Despite this, it is considered debatable that it could be called finished. Each issue has a different pictorial cover, including a portrait of Twain on the May issue. Condition is generally very good, with chipping, bumping and creasing to various issues. Interiors clean and bright. "Withdrawn from Oregon State Library" stamp on front of three issues. LIT/091318. Very Good.

Andersen, Hans Christian; Clarke, Harry (Illustrator)
Brentano's, 1916. Clarke, Harry. First Edition. Hardcover. First American edition, quarto size, 320 pp. Near fine. Hans Christian Andersen's (1805-1875) "Fairy Tales" have been beloved by both children and adults ever since they were first published, with some tales appearing as early as 1835. Often containing a moral story clothed in fantasy, but less dark than the Grimms' tales, they have been translated into 125 different languages and many of the stories have been adapted to stage and screen. One only has to give the names for the stories to infuse our minds: Thumbelina, The Emperor's New Clothes, The Ugly Duckling, The Snow Queen, and many more. This version is illustrated by Irish artist Harry Clarke (1890-1931), who was apprenticed to his father, the head of a large firm of stained glass artists, in 1906. An accomplished glass artist whose work can be seen in both secular and religious settings, Clarke's illustrations can be compared to that of Aubrey Beardsley, Kay Nielson, and Edmund Dulac, taken up during the tail end of what was considered the Golden Age of Illustration; his work is often imbued with a sinister atmosphere also exemplified by Beardsley. "Fairy Tales. . ." was published shortly before Clarke's career-making work for Edgar Allan Poe's "Tales of Mystery and Imagination"; the highly detailed drawings take on an almost psychedelic quality, far ahead of their time, and their eerie beauty still fascinates today. ___DESCRIPTION: Full original grey cloth titled and illustrated in black to the front board and spine, with an oval-cut paper illustration mount … [Click Below for Full Description]

San Francisco: John Henry Nash, 1916. Condition: Very Good binding. Quarto. Attractive printing of Cobden-Sanderson's influential treatise on book making, this by John Henry Nash. Webb, R.H.]
[Ardmore, OK], 1916. Original 5" x 7" black and white photograph on a mount measuring ca. 7" x 9", blind-stamped on the lower right "Webb, Ardmore." Identified in pencil on the back as "Ramond Garrett (son), Buck Garrett (Sheriff)" and an unknown individual, Ardmore, Oklahoma, Carter County. Also noted as "purchased from Buck Garrett's estate [illegible] Ron Donoho." (Donoho purchased a collection of Garrett's personal effects from his daughter in the early 1980s). According to a bio provided by Cowan's auctions, who sold Garrett's personal shaving mug in 2011 foe an astounding $27,000, "Buck Garrett, born in Tennessee on May 24, 1871, moved as a child with his family to Paris, Texas, and got his first taste of man-hunting at the age of 18 as a U.S. Marshals' posseman. Surprisingly enough, that led to Garrett being recruited as a "hired gun" in the Johnson County War of Wyoming. Garrett joined Frank Wolcott's regulators, a group of over fifty gunmen hired by local cattlemen to clean the settlers out in Johnson County, WY. On April 9, 1892, Wolcott and Frank Canton led an army of hired guns toward Buffalo, WY. They had heard that two gunmen, Nate Champion and Nick Ray, were staying at the nearby K.C. ranch. Arriving at the ranch, Wolcott's regulators set a wagon on fire and sent it crashing into the log cabin in which the gunmen were holed up. As the building was burning, Nate dove out the front door, his clothes smoking and his guns a blazing. However, fifty guns were too much for him. Nate was cut down in an instant. After Wolcott's hired guns were pinned down on a nearby … [Click Below for Full Description]

Robert Frost
Mountain Interval Robert Frost New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1916 First U.S. edition, in dust jacket Condition: Very Good plus Jacket Condition: Very Good This is a jacketed first edition, first state of Frost's third published book - Frost's first book for which the U.S. edition takes precedence. "Mountain Interval, which appeared in November 1916, offered readers some of his finest poems, such as "Birches," "Out, Out--," "The Hill Wife," and "An Old Man's Winter Night." (ANB) The volume opens with the poem "The Road Not Taken." It was in 1916 that Frost was invited to deliver the Phi Beta Kappa poem at Harvard's Commencement (almost 20 years after he had dropped out) and was elected to the National Institute of Arts and Letters. Condition is compelling, approaching near fine in a very good dust jacket. First state is confirmed by repetition of the sixth line on p.88 and the word 'Come,' instead of 'Gone,' on p.93. (Crane A4, p.21) The blue cloth binding is tight and beautifully bright and clean, with vivid spine and front cover gilt. Trivial wear is confined to extremities, with small bumps to the upper corners. The contents are likewise impressively clean. Mild differential toning to the pastedowns and endpapers corresponds to the jacket flaps. The ghost of an erased name and "Dec 1919" date on the front free endpaper is the only previous ownership mark. Spotting is primarily confined to the page edges, with only incidental intrusions into the blank inner margins. Dust jacket condition is impressive. Minor loss is confined to the spine ends and corners, to a maximum … [Click Below for Full Description]

Creighton, J.E., editor [Josiah Royce--Festschrift]
New York: Longmans, Green & Co, 1916. The binding of this blue leather-bound book is exceptionally attractive and makes me wonder if it was perhaps Royce's personal copy; he presented it "With Love" to L. P. Jacks shortly before his death. Lawrence Pearsall Jacks had been Royce’s student at Harvard and wrote his obituary for the "London Journal" the same year that this festschrift was published. There is a small scuff on the spine not affecting the bright gilt lettering; blue marbled endpapers; top edge gilt. [Please see multiple images of actual book.] Many interior leaves are toned but all are crisp and clean; there are two tiny tears at the top edge of page 285. Frontispiece portrait and one other of Royce at age twenty; bibliography assembled by Benjamin Rand; 294 pages. "It is interesting to note that these papers, although contributed by [those] who in some form acknowledge a debt of gratitude to Royce, many of whom have been his pupils, are largely critical as well as appreciative. It is doubtless true that although we may adopt labels like 'Idealism,' 'Pragmatism,' and 'Realism,' for rough classificatory purposes, yet philosophy does not tend to develop in this country in the form of closed schools. The influence of a teacher like Professor Royce, great as it has been and is, does not lead to the literal adoption of his doctrines, but manifests itself in stimulating and promoting the spirit of inquiry and of universality through which his own philosophy has been developed. This, indeed, has everywhere been characteristic of the influence of great philosophical teach … [Click Below for Full Description]

Alan Seeger
1916. Seeger, Alan. POEMS. With an Introduction by William Archer. 8vo cloth. NY: Scribner's, 1916. BAL 17433; Seeger's important first book was published posthumously in an edition of 3,000 copies. About fine in the rare dust jacket which is damp-stained along the bottom edge. Copies of this key World War I title in dust jacket are extremely rare. [LR] Originally priced in 1972 at $1500.00 The Dorothy Sturges - Mary Elizabeth Hudson copy, with their miniature engraved bookplates. A penciled note on the front free endpaper indicates that D.S. received the book in January 1917, as close to the publication date as any collector could wish for. Folded and laid into the book were five pages of typescript consisting of a three-page version of "An Ode in Memory of the American Volunteers Fallen for France 1914-1915-1916." This is apparently the last poem Seeger wrote, and it is the last one included in Poems. The published version carries the note: "To have been read before the statue of Washington and Lafayette in Paris on Decoration Day, May 30, 1916." Archer's introduction mentions the circumstances surrounding the writing of the poem and the fact that Seeger was not given leave from the front to attend the celebration and read this piece which he was asked to write. A carbon typescript copy of a two-page letter from Seeger to a Mr. Prince, probably a journalist for The New York Herald, is also present, folded with the poem and inserted into the book. It reveals Seeger's bitterness because he wrote the poem and was not allowed to read it. Seeger's letter concludes: "If you do … [Click Below for Full Description]
