Just ask! 1916 1st ed Arctic VOYAGES Taylor With Scott Terra Nova Expedition Antarctica Thomas Griffith Taylor was an early 20th-century English explorer known for surviving the Terra Nova Expedition to Antarctica with Robert Scott. The specifics of this adventure were published in 1916 under the title "With Scott; the Silver Lining". In this book, Taylor describes the ship, storms and blizzards, geological discoveries, studies of iceberg and glacier erosion, use of dogs and dog teams, arrival and settlement at Cape Evans, and much more. According to Rosove, "The book was less popular than other primary accounts, probably because it was more difficult to read - but as a result it is also the scarcest of the expedition's firsthand narratives." Graves, Robert
London: Privately Printed at the Chiswick Press. First edition of author's second book, published in 1916 in very small number. 8vo, plain red wraps, 20pp, about very good copy with some tiredness to the edges, faint soil, most minor paper loss at spine ends, with bookplate of Percy Withers (1867-1945) to verso of front wrap. Minor association copy: both Withers and Graves were alumni of Somerville College (Oxford), and while Withers made his living as a medic and GP, he had literary ambitions and was friendly with A. E. Housman, Yeats, Edmund Blunden, Max Beerbohm, William Rothenstein, John and Paul Nash, and Alice Meynell, and thus had plenty of chance to interact with Graves, but it is not clear that they figured strongly in each other's lives. Very Good.

[Twain, Mark]
New York: Harper, 1916. Softcover. Rare in original wrappers, complete in seven parts published May-November 1916. The Mysterious Stranger is a novel attempted by the author Mark Twain. He worked on it intermittently from 1897 through 1908. Twain wrote multiple versions of the story; each involves a supernatural character called "Satan" or "No. 44". All the versions remained unfinished. Harper's Magazine serialized the work posthumously, basing it on the last version, called No. 44. It was the only one of his four versions of the book to have an actual ending. Despite this, it is considered debatable that it could be called finished. Each issue has a different pictorial cover, including a portrait of Twain on the May issue. Condition is generally very good, with chipping, bumping and creasing to various issues. Interiors clean and bright. "Withdrawn from Oregon State Library" stamp on front of three issues. LIT/091318. Very Good.

Andersen, Hans Christian; Clarke, Harry (Illustrator)
Brentano's, 1916. Clarke, Harry. First Edition. Hardcover. First American edition, quarto size, 320 pp. Near fine. Hans Christian Andersen's (1805-1875) "Fairy Tales" have been beloved by both children and adults ever since they were first published, with some tales appearing as early as 1835. Often containing a moral story clothed in fantasy, but less dark than the Grimms' tales, they have been translated into 125 different languages and many of the stories have been adapted to stage and screen. One only has to give the names for the stories to infuse our minds: Thumbelina, The Emperor's New Clothes, The Ugly Duckling, The Snow Queen, and many more. This version is illustrated by Irish artist Harry Clarke (1890-1931), who was apprenticed to his father, the head of a large firm of stained glass artists, in 1906. An accomplished glass artist whose work can be seen in both secular and religious settings, Clarke's illustrations can be compared to that of Aubrey Beardsley, Kay Nielson, and Edmund Dulac, taken up during the tail end of what was considered the Golden Age of Illustration; his work is often imbued with a sinister atmosphere also exemplified by Beardsley. "Fairy Tales. . ." was published shortly before Clarke's career-making work for Edgar Allan Poe's "Tales of Mystery and Imagination"; the highly detailed drawings take on an almost psychedelic quality, far ahead of their time, and their eerie beauty still fascinates today. ___DESCRIPTION: Full original grey cloth titled and illustrated in black to the front board and spine, with an oval-cut paper illustration mount … [Click Below for Full Description]

Thomas James Cobden-Sanderson
San Francisco: John Henry Nash, 1916. Condition: Very Good binding. Quarto. Attractive printing of Cobden-Sanderson's influential treatise on book making, this by John Henry Nash. This is among the finest printings of The Ideal Book, as Nash had a sensibility in printing that was sympathetic to Cobden-Sanderson's. Bound in delicate laid paper over boards with a wraparound printed title label; paper at joints is splitting as is common. Accompanied by a later edition printed by students and faculty at University of Oregon, John Henry Nash Fine Arts Press (1933), and limited to 50 copies of which this is #29; this copy is bound in marbled paper over boards and titled in gold on the spine, quite a lovely edition that by no means looks to be student work; both housed in a clamshell. Background: Created by Mitchell Loeb (1889-1968) Published by the Zionist Organization of America in the USA THIS POSTER IS FAMILY OWNED AND FRAMED WITH GLASS - SO RATHER HEAVY. I SEE LOTS OF TAPE LINES BEHIND THE GLASS SO PERHAPS IT WAS TAPED TO CARDBOARD. THIS WAS FRAMED ALONG TIME AGO AND I CAN NO LONGER FIND OUT THE PROCESS BY WHICH IT WAS MOUNTED AND FRAMED WITHOUT REMOVING THE FRAME SO I AM SELLING AS IS. OBVIOUSLY THIS IS A VERY HEAVY ITEM TO SHIP. Therefore I HOPING THERE IS A LOCAL BUYER. HOWEVER, IF THERE IS INTEREST, THE POSTER CAN BE SHIPPED AT THE COMPLETE EXPENSE OF THE PURCHASER. I WOULD HAVE TO TAKE THE POSTER TO FEDEX or Other Mailing options to DETERMINE HOW MUCH IT WILL COST TO SHIP. This will be time consuming. I am offering it locally for now.

[Ardmore, OK], 1916. Original 5" x 7" black and white photograph on a mount measuring ca. 7" x 9", blind-stamped on the lower right "Webb, Ardmore." Identified in pencil on the back as "Ramond Garrett (son), Buck Garrett (Sheriff)" and an unknown individual, Ardmore, Oklahoma, Carter County. Also noted as "purchased from Buck Garrett's estate [illegible] Ron Donoho." (Donoho purchased a collection of Garrett's personal effects from his daughter in the early 1980s). According to a bio provided by Cowan's auctions, who sold Garrett's personal shaving mug in 2011 foe an astounding $27,000, "Buck Garrett, born in Tennessee on May 24, 1871, moved as a child with his family to Paris, Texas, and got his first taste of man-hunting at the age of 18 as a U.S. Marshals' posseman. Surprisingly enough, that led to Garrett being recruited as a "hired gun" in the Johnson County War of Wyoming. Garrett joined Frank Wolcott's regulators, a group of over fifty gunmen hired by local cattlemen to clean the settlers out in Johnson County, WY. On April 9, 1892, Wolcott and Frank Canton led an army of hired guns toward Buffalo, WY. They had heard that two gunmen, Nate Champion and Nick Ray, were staying at the nearby K.C. ranch. Arriving at the ranch, Wolcott's regulators set a wagon on fire and sent it crashing into the log cabin in which the gunmen were holed up. As the building was burning, Nate dove out the front door, his clothes smoking and his guns a blazing. However, fifty guns were too much for him. Nate was cut down in an instant. After Wolcott's hired guns were pinned down on a nearby … [Click Below for Full Description]
