[Maritime Photograph Album]. Levick, Edwin - Photographer.
(Photographs New York): 1916. Ca. 1916 - 1925. 23 black leaves in use, 27 leaves blank [50 unpaginated leaves]. 31 b/w images (some sepia-toned) of the MARIE under construction in 1916. Following, 19 b/w photographic images by Edwin Levick (with his name and NY stamped to bottom right corner of each photograph) of the SUNSHINE on the water and its impressive interior. Most images of the MARIE 5-1/2" x 3-1/4". Levick images 8" x 10". Oblong format: 10-1/2" x 13-3/4". Black flexible pebbled leatherette album covers, bound by black cord tie. Gilt "Photographs" stamped to front cover. Significant wear to covers (rubbing & chipping to edges of binding). Black leaves somewhat delicate, with light chipping to edges. Item #41500 Edwin Levick was a famous boating photographer, most well-known for his many images of years of America's World Cup races, operating prolificly from the 1910s to the 1940s. Though the first pictures in this book are not attributed to him, it is presumed he was the photographer. The first 31 images follow the construction of the powered boat MARIE, from a simple wooden outline of the hull to completion. The last 19 images are of the luxurious SUNSHINE, of it elegantly gliding on the water and its sumptuous interior rooms, from the kitchen to the staterooms and the lifeboat deck. Though no information was able to be found on the SUNSHINE, we can assume these pictures were taken sometime in the early 1920s.

[DANCE]. GENTHE, ARNOLD; DUNCAN, ISADORA
New York: Arnold Genthe, 1916. framed. Very Good. EXQUISITE ICONIC PHOTOGRAPH OF ISADORA DUNCAN BY ARNOLD GENTHE. "In the early 20th century, a new form of dance was emerging, one fostered by periods of experimentation in European cities and transferred to American stages by impassioned personalities led by Isadora Duncan. As this new, modern dance both challenged and influenced other dances from ballet to vaudeville, the lines between these forms became blurred allowing for a cacophony of creative expression. The dance world was expanding and changing in a myriad of ways, and nowhere was that more evident than in New York City, where high and low dance shared the same urban space and exchanged ideas and inspiration. Modern dance, as with other modernist movements of the time, sought new forms with which to express the spirit of modern times, and as Duncan phrased it, to express 'the free spirit, who will inhabit the body of the new woman; more glorious than any woman that has yet been... the highest intelligence in the freest body.'

"As modern dance developed and evolved, dance photography also began to develop, influenced by photographer Arnold Genthe (1869-1942), who utilized his signature style to capture dancers 'in the free movement of the dance.' ... Genthe avoided posed photographs, choosing to capture his subjects in an unobtrusive manner, the better to express the essence of a human being. This same principle he applied to his dance photography. Here it was not just the soul and spirit of the dancer he sought to capture, but the motion of the dance, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Frost, Robert
New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1916. Hard Cover. First Edition. Near Fine / Dust Jacket Included. First edition, first state, with duplicate lines on p. 88 and "Come" for "Gone" on p. 93. Publisher's dark blue cloth lettered and decorated in gilt; in the original gray dust jacket printed in black. A near fine copy with a touch of rubbing to extremities a small area of the front board, slight lean to spine, a bit of rubbing to the gilt on the front board visible in the "T" in "Mountain" but otherwise bright, a few spots to endpapers, contemporary ownership inscription to front free endpaper; in a near fine dust jacket with a few tiny chips to spine ends and corners, very faint dampstaining to spine. Overall, an exceptional copy. Crane A4. Mountain Interval is Frost's third published collection of poetry, and is the first appearance of "The Road Not Taken." It also includes the poems "Christmas Trees," "In the Home Stretch," "Birches," "Snow," and "The Bonfire," among others. Throughout the volume, Frost grapples with how the choices of the past ultimately shape the future. "The Road Not Taken," the first and most famous poem of the collection, sets up this paradigm with the narrator's decision of which direction to take after reaching a fork in the road - a metaphor for decisions made along the road of life. While he had previously established his talent for verse with his first two poetry collections, Mountain Interval solidified Frost's status as a master poet. Buehrmann, Elizabeth
Original Platinum Print photograph by Elizabeth "Bessie" Buehrmann, 1916. 9 x 7 inches with border and frame to measure 14 x 10.5 inches. A wonderful photo of a boy in a sailor outfit transfixed by a sunroom aquarium. The photograph is signed and dated in pencil below the print, which is on a textured canvas-like surface. A shadow around the print appears to be original, forming a sort of border or mat around the photograph. Original frame "from the Shops of the Purnell Art Company... Baltimore". Some wear to the verso but photograph is excellent. Elizabeth "Bessie" Buehrmann (c1886 - c1963) was an American photographer and artist who was one of the pioneers of taking formal portraits of people in their own homes rather than in a studio. Successful at a young age, she was accepted as an Associate Member in Alfred Stieglitz's important Photo-Secession at just 18 years old. In 1909 Stieglitz included three of her prints in the prominent National Arts Club exhibition which he organized. Another famous photographer, Robert Demachy, insisted her prints be included in an important show he was organizing in Paris the next year. A major show of hers opened at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1908, and 73 of her photographs are in the permanent collection of the Met. An excellent print by this major photographer. Near Fine.

[St. Louis Cycling Club] Faidley, Lloyd H. (photographer)
N.p, 1916. Album containing over 300 vintage black and white and sepia tone vernacular photographs belonging to St. Louis Cycling Club member Lloyd H. Faidley, shot between 1912 and 1916. Housed in a leather bound volume with gilt titles. An uncommonly large and intimate album illustrating the adventures of the oldest continuously operating cycling club in the United States, this item depicts various outings to rivers, caves, and stony bluffs in rural Missouri and Illinois, as well as club parties and social events. The first bicycles in St. Louis were brought over from a Chicago manufacturer in 1878, and the club was founded less than ten years later in 1887, making it one of the earliest cycling clubs in the country as well. It is still in existence today. The album contains 286 photos, plus another eight photos that have detached from their original album page, and seven photo post cards, along with two pages of notes in holograph pencil detailing various rides, their mileage and destination, and notes on how many miles a given bicycle tire lasted before needing to be replaced. Photos between 2.25 x 2.25 and 8.25 x 6.5 inches, housed in a 10.5 x 13.5 inch post-bound leather album. Photos all Very Good plus or better. Album has a few chips to the leather at the corners, with front hinge split.

Korngold went to Hollywood in 1934 to adapt Mendelssohn's music for *A Midsummer Night's Dream*, and returned to score Michael Curtiz's *The Adventures of Robin Hood* (1938). Fortuitously, he arrived back in Hollywood just before the Nazis annexed Austria, and, being Jewish, decided to stay in America, where he spent the rest of his life. Korngold won an Academy Award for *Robin Hood* and it was the first of several films scored by him, directed by Curtiz, and starring Errol Flynn, including *The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex* (1939) and *The Sea Hawk* (1940). After WWII he returned to classical composition, though today he is generally considered, along with Max Steiner, the father of film music. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

1916. Le Tissage aux Cartons et son Utilisation Decorative dans l'Egypte Ancienne By A. Van Gennep et G. Jéquier The authors look into the costumes and textiles of Ancient Egypt and the possibility that the Egypians used the technique of tablet (or card) weaving. Although this has subsequently been proved not to be the case, it is, nevertheless, an exciting publication. Published in 1916 by Neuchatel: Delachaux & Niestle S. A., Editeurs, edited by A. van GENNEP and G. Jequier and signed by both authors, 'Le Tissage aux Cartons et son Utilisation Decorative dans l'Egypte Ancienne' is a very rare book, limited to 150 copies, 125 of which are numbered, with a further 25 copies lettered A - Z (not for sale). This copy bares the letter S. The book is written in French and includes 12 plates, comprising 5 mounted colour plates, 6 black and white collotype plates, and 1 plate mounted with 5 pleated silk ribbons in imitation of the original textiles. There are also 135 illustrations within the 131 pages of text, printed on handmade, untrimmed paper. The linen covered decoated boards are clean, bright and in fine condition. The binding is secure and tight. Inside, there is a short, neat annotation to the top corner of the first and second front free end-papers. Otherwise, the interior is clean, fresh and in fine condition. An absolutely stunning copy. This book is featured in Wigan Lane Books online bookstore.
