Kafka
FRANZ KAFKA Das Urteil. Eine Geschichte. München, Kurt Wolff 1916. (auf dem Umschlag: 1917). OBrosch mit Umschlag. 28 S., 2 Bll.. Erstausgabe.
[Click Below for Full Description]

Garmisch, 2. VI. 1916. 1½ SS. auf Doppelblatt. 8vo. [California]. [Railroads]
[Chicago, 1916. Very good.. [12]pp. Original pictorial self-wrappers, stapled. Small contemporary publisher's notice affixed to front wrap. Light wear and dust soiling. Rare promotional for the Salt Lake Route by rail to Los Angeles, and for the attractions of the city itself, published circa 1916. The text touts the population and commercial growth of Los Angeles from the turn of the 20th century, its many attractions, and year-round seasonability. The last leaf provides a summary of ways to arrive on the West Coast via the Salt Lake Route through Las Vegas from Chicago, Minneapolis, and Denver, and prints a full-page map of the route and intermediate stops across Utah, Southern Nevada, and Southern California. The Salt Lake Route was operated by the Los Angeles & Salt Lake Railroad, whose line between the two cities was completed in 1905 under the ownership and direction of Montana mining baron William A. Clark, and as a result it was also known informally as the "Clark Road." With many photographic reproductions of Los Angeles and its attractions just after World War I, including many of the grand Southern California resorts of the day. Not in OCLC.

[Click Below for Full Description]

ELGAR, Edward 1857-1934
1 page. Quarto. Dated February 2, 1916. On stationery with "Severn House, 42, Netherhall Gardens, Hampstead, N.W." printed at upper right and "Telegrams: - Siromoris, London. Telephone: - 4771.P.O.Hampstead." at upper left corner. A short and direct statement, all the more interesting as Elgar never completed an opera: "I have no plans regarding opera & have no intention of writing one at present." Quite browned; slightly worn; creased at folds and slightly overall; central fold splitting at left margin. Best-known today for his Enigma Variations, Elgar's "abundant invention, largeness of vision, and strength and singularity of musical character place him high among European Romantic artists and at the peak of British music of his time. He drew inspiration from the culture and landscape of his own country, resourcefulness from the study of his continental colleagues; and contributed to all the major forms except opera, creating a significant body of symphonic literature, the finest oratorio by an Englishman, and in his popular music a style of direct national appeal." Diana McVeagh in Grove Music Online. Elgar began to sketch an opera called The Spanish Lady in 1932 but died before it could be completed.

Dunsany, Lord
John W. Luce & Company, Boston, 1916. Dunsany, Lord. The Tales of Lord Dunsany (special gift edition of six-volume Luce edition of Dunsany's early short fiction), including The Gods of Pegana, Time and the Gods, The Sword of Welleran, A Dreamer's Tale, The Book of Wonder, and The Last Book of Wonder. Boston: John W. Luce & Company, n.d. [1916]. First U.S. editions, special deluxe issue. Together with a small 4-page illustrated brochure promoting the set, describing it as follows: "The Tales of Lord Dunsany . Special Gift Edition. Six volumes boxed, bound with toned vellum backs, leather labels, Fabriano sides, gilt stamping ." This issue was only sold as a set. The present copy of the set is supplied with a new custom-made slipcase covered in imported Japanese silk, with a spine label reproducing the first page of the promotional brochure. The regular Luce issue used brick-red boards and black shelf backs. This deluxe issue is bound in dark green boards with white cloth shelf back with raised bands and green leather spine label with gold lettering ("vellum" was used loosely by publishers). As with the regular issue, the top edges are gilt while others are untrimmed. All volumes are illustrated with inserted half-tone plates by Sidney Sime. All volumes bear an ink ownership signature ("F. J. Crowley") on front paste-down with dates of 1976 and 1978 in two cases. As is almost inevitable with a book bound with white cloth, the spines here are very slightly darkened with a few negligible spots; similarly, the fragile paper-covered boards have light wear at most corners, which, … [Click Below for Full Description]

MILHAUD, Darius 1892-1974
1916. 1 page. Folio (ca. 279 x 215 mm.). N.d. In English. Milhaud very enthusiastically thanks Livingston for his "kind collaboration," and will send a 2-piano version of some of his Songs as soon as it is photocopied. He includes greetings for Livingston's wife, Virginia Morley, for whom his Song arrangements are presumably also intended. He will come in December, and hopes to see Livingston often. "10000000 thanks. You acted very wonderfully and I jumped on my desk and made a 2 pianos version of three numbers of my Songs which I intended to do for months... I think you will like those little pieces. The Russian-River-Pianist asked me only the rights of the 1st performance and no exclusivity. You will be able to play 'his' piece after January if you wish... I am too glad to send you new old pieces because you [and Virginia] are both artists that I love and admire..." Slightly worn; minor edge tears; creased at folds and corners; tape repairs to central fold of blank verso with minor remnants of former mount to upper margin. "A pioneer in the use of percussion, polytonality, jazz and aleatory techniques, [Milhaud's] music allies lyricism with often complex harmonies. Though his sources of inspiration were many and varied, his music has compelling stylistic unity." Jeremy Drake in Grove Music Online. "Gearhart (1916-1996) is probably best known for his hit arrangement of the classic 'Dry Bones' and his 'Session Series' of skills-building books. Gearhart attended the Curtis Institute of Music. Subsequent studies in France included composition with Nadia Boulanger, Igor Stravi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Having published three books of verse to some success, Witter Bynner (who had helped to publish Pound's first book of poems) "contrived a literary hoax to spoof such poetic trends as Imagism and Vorticism. Together with his friend Arthur Davison Ficke, Bynner fabricated the 'Spectric' school of poetry. Adopting the pseudonyms Emanuel Morgan and Anne Knish, Bynner and Ficke published parodic poems that some took quite seriously, although others recognized the burlesque inent behind such lines as 'Then you came--like a scream/Of beeves.' Formally, Bynner's Spectra poems resemble his prior work, but they distingish themselves in their tone and range of subjects." (Encyclopedia of American Poetry). The volume generated a good deal of praise in the literary world until the hoax was revealed two years later while Bynner was delivering a lecture and was asked point blank whether or not he was Morgan and Ficke was Knish, which he confirmed. See Smith, William Jay. The Spectra Hoax (Middletown, CT, 1961) Decorated boards. Small pale stain to spine, otherwise fine, in slipcase. With a photo laid in of Bynner, A.D. John Wisden
Hi, This lot is an Original 1916 Wisden Paperback with facsimile spine. This is in Very Good condition, the only two things to note is a small rubbing to the front cover on the right and the spine is a slightly different colour to the book. Other than that is is magnificent and a very rare year. The covers are clean, nice and tall. They are nice and bright yellow too. A nice new spine with text has been added , it is neat and tidy but not an exact copy of an original Wisden. Excellent inside with clean pages and tightly bound. Tip top. New spine professionally added which makes the book readable and stops it falling apart.
