Graves, Robert
Privately Printed at the Chiswick Press. First edition of author's second book, published in 1916 in very small number. 8vo, plain red wraps, 20pp, about very good copy with some tiredness to the edges, faint soil, most minor paper loss at spine ends, with bookplate of Percy Withers (1867-1945) to verso of front wrap. Minor association copy: both Withers and Graves were alumni of Somerville College (Oxford), and while Withers made his living as a medic and GP, he had literary ambitions and was friendly with A. E. Housman, Yeats, Edmund Blunden, Max Beerbohm, William Rothenstein, John and Paul Nash, and Alice Meynell, and thus had plenty of chance to interact with Graves, but it is not clear that they figured strongly in each other's lives. Very Good. [Attributes: First Edition]

SPILLEBEEN, WILLY. VAN HERREWEGHEN
, , Gebonden, Hardcover met omslagwikkel compleet. 277 pagina's . ISBN 9789063063573.

[Click Below for Full Description]

Scoresby, William.
New York: The Explorers Club, 1916-1917. Folio, 8 volumes, various paginations (complete). b/w and color plates, maps and facsimiles. "Issued in fac-simile with reproductions in color of portraits in oils of Captain William Scoresby, Senior and of Captain William Scoresby, Junior. Introduction and notes by Frederick S. Dellenbaugh." This set is #130 in a limited edition of 300 copies. All but three copies were placed in institutions, accounting for the scarcity of this set on the market. According to an old Eberstadt catalog, "Three hundred copies printed and plates destroyed; all copies permanently deposited in institutions, except for three presented to individuals: Dellenbaugh, Bartlett, and Stefansson. Although perhaps the most important work on whaling and early far-northern exploration ever to achieve print, apparently the desire of the patron, the late James B. Ford, that no copy should ever come on the market, has until now been fulfilled. The only record of the work is an appraisal made in 1937 by a qualified person, placing its value at a minimum of one thousand dollars. The log-books, describing fourteen voyages into the Arctic seas from 1786 onward, are invaluable records of early northern navigation, whale fishing, and original exploration. Scoresby was the most successful whaler and ice navigator that ever lived; a foremost proponent of the Northwest Passage; inventor of the top-gallant crows nest, the ice drill, and much whaling equipment..." Imprimerie sp?ciale du Canard Encha?n? 1916-1920, Paris. [Click Below for Full Description]

Gilt-pictorial cloth, top edge gilt; covers flecked, marked, rubbed and unevenly discoloured; cloth on the rear joint split (but the joint is firm); endpapers offset, with the front flyleaf a little stained, with minor paper residue; scattered foxing; a decent copy. The author has signed the title page in pencil; at the head of the list of plates is the early ownership signature of one H. Downie. The artwork is mounted on flush-cut card, 163 × 178 mm, captioned in ink as above, and signed in pencil by the artist. Loosely inserted is the manuscript price list in ink (with pencil annotations) for five watercolours and seven pen drawings (including this one) offered for sale by the Beaux Art Gallery, London. A receipt for customs duty affixed to the verso of the drawing suggests that it was brought to Australia in July 1929. MORGAN, Emanuel and Anne Knish [pseud. Witter Bynner and Arthur
Mitchell Kennerly, 1916. First Edition. Small 8vo. Original printed boards. Covers rubbed with some damping. Internally near fine with damping only faintly continuing to first few leaves. Good overall. INSCRIBED by Witter Bynner to Karl Shapiro: "Emanuel Morgan / has asked me to / send Karl Shapiro / this stray copy / of Spectra which / has turned up / in my house. / So here it goes, / with greetings / from / Witter Bynner / Santa Fe / March 11 / 1953." An excellent association of this infamous poetic hoax, inscribed by Witter Bynner to Karl Shapiro. Shapiro served as Poet Laureate at the Library of Congress, the same entity which administers the Witter Bynner Prize, given each year to two poets selected by the current Poet Laureate. A satire directed at the experimental "isms" invented and championed by Ezra Pound from 1912-1915, Imagism & Vorticism, SPECTRA instead was mistaken as that which is was attempting to mock: a new verse movement. 1916. This is a 435p report to Ameerican military authorities on Russian army organization and combat in 1915. The report was written by an American army officer who was on the battlefields and had daily contact with Russian army officers. Mounted in the typescript are over 200 period photos, drawings and fold-outs of Russian weaponry, soldiers, equipment and battlefield positions. There is a detailed index, but no indication of who wrote the report and no title page. The report is bound in a brown fabric-like cloth with leather spine and corners. It measures 8x13, is 2 1/4 in. thick. There is a two inch chip off the spine bottom.Following are a few excerpts from the report. "The officer told me he got most if his information from prisoners. The Germans told us everything they knew immediately. Probably because Russian prisoners were tortured and hoped to avoid such treatment."."The spies were mostly Jews. Against their poor training the Russiand made a poor showing."."Their system of transporting a machine gun on a cart is very superior to ours in which we use mules to transport the guns"."One of the tricks the Russians used was to build a fire between the Russian and German lines. then soak the ground in oil and light it when the enemy attacked. This would illuminate the enemy position"."All the cities and towns behind the lines were filled with whores. Periodically they were rounded up and shipped to the interior. But they seemed to get back rapidly using troop trains." [Attributes: Hard Cover]

SUTHERLAND, Abby A
Ogontz School, 1916. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. Tall octavo. 177, [3]pp. Illustrated with tipped-in gelatin silver photographs. Embossed white calf. Silk-lined endpapers. A couple of small scrapes on the boards, modest dampstain in margins of the first several leaves, the white boards predictably a bit soiled, a very good copy of a very elaborately prepared woman's school yearbook, with a separate portrait of each student tipped-in with signatures in facsimile, as well as other images of noted faculty, the campus, group shots, and activities. Otherwise blank pages in the rear for engagements, marriages, births, and deaths! The Ogontz School was an exclusive girl's college which used the estate of Jay Cooke as its campus. In the following year, 1917, the formidable headmistress Abby A. Sutherland (pictured in the book), purchased another track of land and moved the school (that year was also notable as Amelia Earhart joined the Senior Class, although she did not graduate). As deluxe a yearbook for a woman's college as we've seen. [Attributes: First Edition]
