        Maple Leaves in Flanders Fields.

London, Smith Elder 1916. 8vo. Publisher's dark blue cloth titled in gilt.Minor bumping to extremities, otherwise sharp and clean. A very good copy indeed in the scarce and charming Fred Leist wrapper, minor edgewear with some very light chipping to edges, unclipped, bright and smart. Internally clean and surprisingly free of browning. A touching, and surprsingly amusing account of the first years of World War I from the perspective of the First Canadian Contingent to ship across to Flanders. It is a matter of historical record that the Canadian forces distinguished themselves in legendary fashion throughout the conflict. The introduction is written by Admiral Sir Albert Markham, and the book itself is dedicated to Major General A.W. Currie of the First Canadian Division, Herbert Rae acted as his ADC for a period of the war, and they held each other in mutual esteem. Handsome and scarce.#

New York: B. W. Huebsch, 1916.. Medium blue cloth, lettered in gilt and blind. Top edge slightly dust spotted, pencil ownership signature on front free endsheet, faint old tape shadows on free endsheets from formerly present "protective" wrapper, row of three small spots at extreme top edge of upper board, one lower forecorner creased and very minimally mistrimmed in process of binding; still, a bright, tight, unfaded and better than very good copy. First edition. Although serialized in 25 installments in THE EGOIST from Feb. 1914 to Sept. 1915, British printers and publishers, then still reeling from the suppression of Lawrence's THE RAINBOW, were unreceptive in their responses to Joyce's efforts toward publication in book form. Based in part on Harriet Weaver's guarantee of 750 sets of sheets for the slightly later Egoist Press issue, Huebsch took on the novel for December publication. The size of the first printing may have been reasonably conservative, and a second printing was called for in April 1917. " ... the Portrait can be read as either an autobiography or a novel. A landmark in sensibility, the prose moves forward in complexity from the child's sensations at the beginning to the adolescent subtleties at the end" - Connolly. SLOCUM & CAHOON A11.         Androcles and the Lion, Overruled, Pygmalion

Bretano's, 1916, Hardcover, Book Condition: Very Good +, First edition. A Very Good + copy of the first American edition, first printing, of these three Plays in book form in the Publisher's original green cloth (modest rubbing to the spine ends and board corners, slight loss to the spine label but with "Androcles" and the balance of the often sun-faded spine label remaining quite bright, in an about Very Good example of the quite scarce dust jacket -- lacking the quite scarce dust jacket) in a Very Good example of the quite scarce dust jacket (general wear and tear, staining and some surface loss to the spine, tide mark to the lower spine and lower panels adjacent to the spine tail); a collection of three Shaw plays, including his famous Play "Pygmalion" which first reached the stage in 1913 and features Professor Henry Higgins who bets with a fellow scholar that he, Higgins, could train a poor flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, to pass for a duchess at an ambassador's garden party by teaching her proper English and manners including by changing her pronunciation to that used in England's High Society. Shaw's Higgins character was inspired by a number of British professors of phonetics including Alexander Melville Bell, Alexander J. Ellis, Tito Pagliardini, and, most importantly, by the cantankerous Henry Sweet. The work was adapted by Lerner and Lowe for a stage musical titled "My Fair Lady" which then provided the basis for the 1964 film of the same name starring Audrey Hepburn (whose singing voice was provided by Marni Nixon) as Eliza Doolittle, Rex Harrison as Professor Henry Higgins, Stanley Holloway as Alfred P. Doolittle, Wilfrid Hyde-White as Colonel Hugh Pickering, Gladys Cooper as Mrs. Higgins, and Jeremy Brett as Freddy Eynsford-Hill (whose singing voice was provided by Bill Shirley). The film won eight Academy Awards ("Oscars"), including those for Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Director. George Bernard Shaw won the 1925 Nobel Prize in Literature for his work "... marked by both idealism and humanity, its stimulating satire often being infused with a singular poetic beauty". This first American edition in book form was published prior to the publication of the first UK edition and, in our experience, copies of this TRUE FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM COMPLETE WITH THE DUST JACKET are SURPRISINGLY SCARCE.

Die Grundlage der allgemeinen relativitatstheorie. FROM THE LIBRARY OF AN ANTI-SEMITE WITH ANNOTATIONS

Leipzig: J.A Barth, 1916 Original printed wrappers on rippled paper, covers lightly toned around edges; interior clean with underlining by previous owner, Dr. Sten Lothigius of Stockholm An excellent copy. First separate appearance in print of Einstein's fundamental statement of the General theory of Relativity. Not an offprint from the Annalen der Physik as is often thought, but a completely new setting of type with significant and important additions and revisions, including an introduction published here for the first time which was not in the journal issue. According to Weil, this first edition may be identified by the presence of the printer's imprint "Druck von Metzger & Wittig in Leipzig" on verso of title, and :Metzger & Wittig, Leipzig" on the back wrapper From the library of Dr. Sten Lothigius, Swedish physicist with an affinity to the Nazi movement, an anti-Semite who wrote against the theory of relativity and Einstein. His book, Esquisse d'une theorie nouvelle de la lumiere (Sketch of a new theory of light), 1920, is noted in Christopher Jon Bjerkness, The manufacture and sale of Saint Einstein (see the website jewishracism).

        Die Grundlage der allgemeinen Relativitätstheorie.

Leipzig, Ambrosius Barth, 1916. 8vo. Contemp. hcalf, gilt back. The whole volume of "Annalen der Physik", Vierte Folge, Band 49. VIII,1000 pp. and 10 plates. The Einstein paper: pp. 769-822. Internally fine and clean.. First edition of Einstein's "The Foundation of the General Theory of Relativity", which contains the first appearance of the full exposition of the Theory of Relativity. A separate edition of the work appeared in the same year, but the text for that edition was set up anew and printed after the journal issue [offered here], which thus constitutes the actual first printing. "This paper was the first comprehensive overview of the final version of Einstein's general theory of relativity after several expositions of preliminary versions and latest revisions of the theory in November 1915. It includes a self-contained exposition of the elements of the tensor calculus that are needed for the theory." (T. Sauer in Landmark Writings in Western Mathematics)."Whereas Special Relativity had brought under one set of laws the electromagnetic world of Maxwell and Newtonian mechanics as far as they applied to bodies in uniform relative motion, The general Theory did the same thing for bodies with the accelerated relative motion epitomized in the acceleration of gravity. But first it had been necessary for Einstein to develop the true nature of gravity from his principle of equivalence...Basically, he proposed that gravity was a function of matter itself and that its effects were transmitted between contiguous portions of space-time...Where matter exists, so does energy; the greater the mass of matter involved, the greater the effect of the energy which can be transmitted. In addition, gravity affected light...exactly as it affected material particles. Thus the universe which Newton had seen, and for which he had constructed his apparently impeccable mechanical laws, was not the real universe...Einstein's paper gave not only a correct picture of the universe but also a fresh set of mechanical laws by which its details could be described" (R.W. Clark). - PMM: 408. - Horblit 26 c. - Weil 80

        Autograph Letter Signed to Brion Gysin, large 4to, n p , April 12, 1985

Haring writes to close friend Brion Gysin (1916-1986), British painter, writer, sound poet, inventor and performance artist who influenced the Beat poets and later Haring with his cut-up method. Haring writes using a black marker in large capital letters in part, "I thought you'd want to have Xerox copies of the drawings I showed you in Paris...." He signs, "Keith." A fine association to an influential artist. Haring letters do not often become available. The New Museum exhibited Gysin's first retrospective in 2012, "Brion Gysin: Dream Machine."         Beiträge zur Einsteinschen Gravitationstheorie.Leibzig: S. Hirzel, 1916.

First edition, extremely rare author's offprint issue, of the theoretical discovery of the concept of a 'wormhole,' "a hypothetical 'tunnel' connecting two different points in space-time in such a way that a trip through the wormhole could take much less time than a journey between the same starting and ending points in normal space. The ends of a wormhole could, in theory, be <i>intra-universe</i> (i.e. both exist in the same universe) or <i>inter-universe</i> (exist in different universes, and thus serve as a connecting passage between the two)" ( No copies of this offprint located in institutional collections worldwide.<br/><br/> "The theory of wormholes goes back to 1916, shortly after Einstein published his general theory [of relativity], when Ludwig Flamm, an obscure Austrian physicist, looked at the simplest possible solution of Einstein's field equations, known as the Schwarzschild solution (or Schwarzschild metric). This describes the gravitational field around a spherically-symmetric non-rotating mass. If the mass is sufficiently compact, the solution describes a particular form of the phenomenon now called a black hole - the Schwarzschild black hole. Flamm realized that Einstein's equations allowed a second solution, now known as a white hole, and that the two solutions, describing two different regions of (flat) space-time were connected (mathematically) by a space-time conduit. Because the theory has nothing to say about where these regions of space-time might be in the real world, the black hole 'entrance' and white hole 'exit' could be in different parts of the same universe or in entirely different universes" (<i>ibid</i>.).<br/><br/> Flamm's paper made little impact until 1935 when a similar idea was explored by Einstein and his student Nathan Rosen, who studied "the theory of intra- or inter-universe connections in a paper whose actual purpose was to try to explain fundamental particles, such as electrons, in terms of space-time tunnels threaded by electric lines of force. Their work gave rise to the formal name 'Einstein-Rosen bridge' for what the physicist John Wheeler would later call a 'wormhole'." (<i>ibid</i>.). <br/><br/> "Further theoretical work showed that the Einstein-Rosen 'wormhole' is not, contrary to outward appearances, a stable structure. For an observer trying to pass through, the wormhole opens up and closes too quickly for even a photon to get through.. Offprint from Physikalische Zeitschrift, 17 Band, pp. 448-454, 1916.         Arrangement of the Chinese Characters according to an Alphabetical System with Japanese Dictionary of 8000 Characters and List of 22000 Charakters.

Tokyo, Kobunsha, 1916. 15, (546) pp. Green clothbound (original) volume with gold-embossed title along spine and blind-tooled publisher`s mark on front. Illustrated endpaper with floral ornamentation. Famous study of Russian Orientalist, Sinologist and scholar of Japanese Studies Otto Julius Rosenberg (1888 - 1919) on a system of classification of Chinese characters. Rosenberg studied from 1906 to 1911 at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the University of St. Petersburg, lectured by, among others, the founder of the Russian school of Indology, Sergei Oldenburg (1863 - 1934). During a study stay in Bonn in 1909, Rosenberg befriended Hermann Jacobi (1850-1937), the greatest Indologist and Sanskrit scholar of that time. As part of an internship at the Department of Oriental Languages (SOS) at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität two years later, he also befriended the German linguist and scholar of Japanese studies, Rudolf Lange (1850 - 1933). From 1912 to 1916 he studied Buddhist Literature and Tradition at the University of Tokyo. Here Rosenberg became acquainted with the then leading Buddhist Scholars of Japan. In the course of this stay, he explored the school of Zen Buddhism as one of the first Western scientists and also became an expert for Japanese and Chinese characters used in the writing of Chinese and Japanese. In 1924, his work \"The problems of Buddhist philosophy\" was published in German. Based on ideas of Russian Sinologist and Buddhologist Vasily Vasilyev (1818 - 1900), Rosenberg developed a method of classification of Chinese and Japanese characters. He published the results of his research in a dictionary which was published in English and Japanese and which formed the basis of the so-called \"Four Corner Method\", which is still employed today in the creation of Chinese and Japanese dictionaries. This volume is extremely rare and, according to the world`s largest bibliographic database, WorldCat, it is only found in six libraries worldwide. The copy offered here was purchased from a Japanese private collection. Boards slightly stained (esp. back cover), otherwise good copy of an extremely rare and fragile item of considerable scientific work with regards to the disclosure of far-eastern language systems.         Bullets & Billets

Grant Richards, 1916. 1st edition. Hardcover. Original red pictorial cloth. Binding tight and square. Some small, moderate, occasional foxing on the pages and spotting to the blocks. All the plates and drawings intact. Signed by the author and inscribed to 'Mr A.J.Richardson' on the half-title page. Frontispiece of the author with original tissue guard. The rare dustjacket is almost complete, chipped at top right corner on the word 'France', with a small chip on the lower front edge and nibbled at the other extremities. Bruce Bairnsfather joined 1st Battalion the Royal Warwickshire Regiment in late 1914, went to France and was wounded at Ypres in April 1915 and shipped back to England. This book recounts his experiences of life in the trenches during that period, and is studded with many of the cartoons and drawings for which he became famous, including his best-known creation, Old Bill, with his trademark walrus moustache, who encapsulated the dogged weariness of the typical British soldier in World War One. Bairnsfather, arguably, did more for morale at the time than any of the more famous poets of the Great War. This particular copy of his autobiography is unique, on account of his signature and the extremely scarce dustjacket. Also included is an interesting article from the Sunday Times in which descendants of Lance-Corporal Thomas Rafferty claim that he was the model for Bairnsfather's 'Old Bill'.

Judex (Still photograph from the 1916 film)

Paris: Société des Etablissements L. Gaumont, 1916. Original double weight matte finish still photograph from the legendary 1916 silent film serial. With the Gaumont logo at the lower right corner. The last of Feuillade's three film serial masterpieces, preceded by "Fantômas" (1913) and "Les Vampires" (1915), combining elements of both its predecessors. In Judex (Latin for "judge"), Feuillade furthered his vision of the dark, enigmatic anti-hero he introduced with the legendary Fantômas character, and utilized Musidora--who played the lead character Irma Vep in "Les Vampires"--as the villainess. Judex was a step forward from the criminal Fantômas, however, predicting pulp heroes to come, such as The Shadow and especially Batman in the US: he was a masterful fighter, an expert in disguise, and kept his headquarters in the subterranean passages beneath a ruined castle, lavishly outfitted with high tech gadgets. Feuillade shot "Judex" in 1914, but the outbreak of World War I delayed release in France until 1916, and wide release until 1917. Pictured here is Judex, cunning and silent, in a stunt scene where in he attempts what we suspect will be successful entry into an unsuspecting criminal's car while the vehicle is in motion. 11 x 9 inches (22.5 x 28.5 cm). A few pinholes at the corners, else Near Fine. Hardy, The BFI Companion to Crime, p. 187-188.

Fantômas (Still photograph from the 1913 film serial)

Paris: Société des Etablissements L. Gaumont, 1916. Original double weight matte finish still photograph from the legendary 1913 silent film serial. Printed onto heavy card stock for use as the equivalent of a modern day lobby card. With the Gaumont logo at the lower right corner. The first of Feuillade's three film serial masterpieces, followed by "Les Vampires" (1915) and "Judex" (1916). Feuillade took the brave task of putting to film Fantômas, already wildly popular with European audiences. The character can be seen as an outgrowth of the "hero thief" character Arsene Lupin from turn-of-the-century French fiction. But unlike Lupin, Fantômas was completely comfortable killing those who got in his way, sadistically and with no small amount of enjoyment. The scene pictured here shows Jaques Dollon (André Luguetat) at the police station (sitting at the center), having been framed by Fantômas. The journalist Fandor (Georges Melchior), standing in for Inspector Juve (who is on the lam, in disguise as a hobo), stands over Dollon as a police inspector sits at a corner desk. Dollon goes on to escape, then captured by Fantômas, who murders him, cuts off his fingers, and throws his body into the river. Fantômas then sews the fingers into a glove and commits further crimes, continuing to implicate Dollon, who in addition to being innocent, is now dead. 11 x 9 inches. Mounted on brown card stock. Hardy, The BFI Companion to Crime, p. 125-126.
