Complete in 8 volumes (7 log books + matching introductory brochure volume). The introductory volume is by Frederick S. Dellenbaugh. This is number 141 of a limited edition of 300 numbered copies. Also included here is a ninth log-book volume: Scoresby, William: The 1806 Log Book Concerning the Arctic Voyage of Captain William Scoresby. Whitby, Yorkshire: Caedmon of Whitby, 1981, ISBN 0 905355 24 5. An Eberstadt catalog of 1952 notes the following about the Explorer Club set: "Three hundred copies printed and plates destroyed; all copies permanently deposited in institutions, except for three presented to individuals: Dellenbaugh, Bartlett, and Stefansson. Although perhaps the most important work on whaling and early far-northern exploration ever to achieve print, apparently the desire of the patron, the late James B. Ford, that no copy should ever come on the market, has until now been fulfilled. The only record of the work is an appraisal made in 1937 by a qualified person, placing its value 'at a minimum of one thousand dollars.' The log-books, describing fourteen voyages into the Arctic seas from 1786 onward, are invaluable records of early northern navigation, whale fishing, and original exploration. Scoresby was the most successful whaler and ice navigator that ever lived; a foremost proponent of the Northwest Passage; inventor of the top-gallant 'crow's nest,' the ice drill, and much whaling equipment; and, with his son a leading scientific observer of the polar regions into which on many successive voyages he pushed farther than man had ever before ventured." This note documents the great rarity of this set. No previous ownership marks.

Presentation to Mrs. John Fowle, from the President and Committee of the "Art Sale" at Messrs. Bennett's 3rd and 4th December, 1915

(1916). 8vo, (18.5 x 12 cm). A fine calligraphic manuscript on eight leaves of thick card, the first four leaves beautifully illustrated and illuminated in colour with highlighting in gold, the remaining leaves comprising a list of members of the presentation committee. An accomplished Arts and Craft binding of tan morocco, spine with raised bands, the compartments blank but for a date label at the foot of the spine, both boards edged with a double gilt ruled border featuring alternate gilt flowers and inlaid green leather leaves along with a simple gilt tooled recurring motif across the main area, the upper board with an elaborate gilt tooled floral device to the centre with small inlaid red and green leather panels, the lower board with simpler central circular tooled border surrounding an inlaid red leather panel featuring the initials "H.F.". Some scuffing with loss to the leather of the upper board, some mild wear to the extremities, slight weakening at the front hinge, else in very good condition. The initials on the binding are for Héléne Fowle, a Belgian woman who had married and settled in Ireland. After the outbreak of the First World War many Belgians were displaced from their homeland and found refuge in England and subsequently Ireland. Fowle, along with Edward White, set up an organisation to raise money and support for the refugees - Fowle becoming President and White the Treasurer of what came to be known as the Committee for Dealing with the Interests of Belgians in Ireland. Their activities included street collections as well as canvassing for other donations of practical items such as clothes. Their enterprises became more sophisticated in time, including the events such as the art sale which prompted the production of this manuscript. Held in Bennett's Dublin sale room, lots included numerous valuable items along with canvases donated by the Irish artists John Lavery and William Orpen with the promise of a portrait by each artist to the winning bidder of the respective lots. The sale was evidently successful, raising in the region of £2,500, the proceeds being equally split between the Belgium refugees and a similar charitable organisation founded to support Irish prisoners of war on the continent. Héléne Fowle was awarded an MBE for her services in the 1918 New Years Honours list. Joseph Tierney was a Dublin based artist and illuminator, he was heavily involved in the Irish Arts and Crafts scene. He is best remembered for his work in churches, typically for stained glass windows and altars, although he also illustrated several books in the 1920s in collaboration with George Cogan. A unique and exquisitely crafted production.

(Photographs New York) 1916 - 23 black leaves in use, 27 leaves blank [50 unpaginated leaves]. 31 b/w images (some sepia-toned) of the MARIE under construction in 1916. Following, 19 b/w photographic images by Edwin Levick (with his name and NY stamped to bottom right corner of each photograph) of the SUNSHINE on the water and its impressive interior. Most images of the MARIE 5-1/2" x 3-1/4". Levick images 8" x 10". Oblong format: 10-1/2" x 13-3/4" Edwin Levick was a famous boating photographer, most well-known for his many images of years of America's World Cup races, operating prolificly from the 1910s to the 1940s. Though the first pictures in this book are not attributed to him, it is presumed he was the photographer. The first 31 images follow the construction of the powered boat MARIE, from a simple wooden outline of the hull to completion. The last 19 images are of the luxurious SUNSHINE, of it elegantly gliding on the water and its sumptuous interior rooms, from the kitchen to the staterooms and the lifeboat deck. Though no information was able to be found on the SUNSHINE, we can assume these pictures were taken sometime in the early 1920s. Significant wear to covers (rubbing & chipping to edges of binding). Black leaves somewhat delicate, with light chipping to edges. Black flexible pebbled leatherette album covers, bound by black cord tie. Gilt "Photographs" stamped to front cover [Attributes: Hard Cover]

John Wisden's Cricketer's Almanack for 1916: W. G. Grace. A Tribute by Lord Harris. Full Statistics of Mr. Grace's Career in the Cricket Field. Public School Cricket by E. B. Noel.

London: John Wisden, 1916.. RARE ORIGINAL ALMANACK. Duodecimo, pp.300. Recently rebound in brown cloth with gilt titles and library class-mark to spine. With original browned paper covers pasted in to prelims and at rear. Large purple library stamp to title-page. Occasional smaller purple stamps elsewhere. Good overall. The rarest Wisden almanack of the twentieth century. Due to the First World War, taking pains over the matches of the 1915 season may have seemed somewhat over-indulgent, even for the sport's most ardent enthusiasts, but the long-established tradition of the almanack, as well as the death W. G. Grace made publication almost obligatory. Pardon's preface states: '... a twelvemonth back I wrote that the 'Almanack' might in its next issue have to return to the slender proportions of fifty years ago. Though not reduced to quite such an extent it is, in comparison with its normal self, a very small volume. The question of coming out at all was seriously considered, but the proprietors decided not to break the continuity of over half-a-century.'

The most important Presidential Quote of all time: "I once used a phrase, to sum up our proper foreign policy: 'Speak softly and carry a big stick.'" Theodore Roosevelt explains his 'big stick' ... "I was President seven years and a half and I never spoke with wanton harshness of any nation. I always spoke softly, I was always just as nice and polite as any man could be. But I carried a big stick!"

Chicago, Illinois: , April 29, 1916. Chicago, Illinois, April 29, 1916. 7" x 24". "Printed Speech Signed with short ALS ""Theodore Roosevelt"" in pencil, atop the first page. Eight pages 7"" x 24"", separate sheets (the last page is 7"" x 8""). The text of an address by Theodore Roosevelt at a dinner tendered by the Illinois Bar to the Honorable Theodore Roosevelt at the Hotel La Salle, Chicago, Saturday evening, April 29, 1916. These are the proof sheets of his speech sent to TR for his approval.""Dear Mr. MacChesney, Here is the speech, with a few merely verbal corrections, sincerely, Theodore Roosevelt."" Nathan William MacChesney was President of the Illinois Bar Association. In addition to his short letter, Roosevelt made 43 handwritten corrections in pencil. The speech, as edited, is printed on pages 761 - 784 in The Proceedings of the Illinois State Bar Association (Chicago: Chicago Legal News Co.,1916).From the printed text here offered, in addition to minor grammatical corrections and punctuation marks, Theodore Roosevelt's cross-outs and handwritten edits include, in bold:""And the Government while encouraging all industry, should so control it as to secure one of the things that the government encouraged should be used to secure should be what has been secured for labor in Germany, proper living and working conditions ^ for the wage workers and provisions for insurance, compensation against sickness and accident and old age."" (page 7) Also on this page, TR has changed ""trained for this particular work"" to ""developed, "" ""the system of an educational order, the small, educational order"" to ""the,"" and ""fitness of purpose"" to ""fixity."" On page 8, ""the desire to comfort ourselves by words that mean nothing"" to ""flatter.""TR's speech, in part, ""Mr. President, and my Hosts of the Illinois Bar Association: I felt it a particular privilege to accept your invitation because I was glad to have a chance, as our Methodist brethren say, to show why it is borne in on me to testify (laughter) to precisely this type of audience in this part of our common country; to address an audience of men who by advantages, by training, by practice, must inevitably play a leading part in the community; and to address such an audience in Lincoln's state, in the heart of our great country. (Applause.) And, friends of the Bar Association, questions of elective and legislative machinery, even questions of internal reform, sink into insignificance when we are confronted by the great question as to whether we are to be a nation at all or a mere knot, a tangle, of squabbling nationalities. (Laughter and applause.) Lincoln once said, speaking in this State, that the country could not endure half slave and half free; and nowadays America can not endure half hyphenated and half not. (Laughter and applause.) …""Again, such questions are necessarily of small account while in international matters all moral sanctions and standards of conduct have vanished into chaos, unless we prepare ourselves to defend the lives of our citizens and the honor and vital interests of the nation as a whole. (Applause.) … A year and three quarters have passed since the opening of the great war. At the outset our people were stunned by the vastness and terror of the crisis. We had been assured by many complacent persons that the day of great wars had ended, that the reign of violence was over, that the enlightened public opinion of the world would prevent the oppression of weak nations. To be sure there was ample proof that none of these assurances were true, and far-seeing men did not believe in them. But there was good excuse for the mass of the people being misled.""Now, however, there is none. War has been waged on a more colossal scale than ever before in the world's history; and cynical indifference to international morality, and willingness to trample on inoffensive, peace loving peoples who are also helpless or timid, have been shown on a greater scale than since the close of the Napoleonic Wars of a century ago. Alone of the great powers we have not been drawn into this struggle … I abhor unjust and wanton war. All that I honorably could do would be done to try to keep this country out of war. But I would rather see this country go to war than sink into the dreadful condition where the people do not know that there are things even worse than war. (Applause.) …""I once used a phrase, to sum up our proper foreign policy:— ""Speak softly and carry a big stick."" There was a good deal of laughter over that phrase. But it expresses a pretty sound policy all the same. (Applause.) Remember, that I was President seven years and a half and that I never spoke with wanton harshness of any nation. I always spoke softly, I was always just as nice and polite as any man could be (laughter and applause). But I carried a big stick! (Applause) … ""Condition: Printed on newsprint, the paper has the patina of age. The top page has three paper clip stains. Tiny separations occur at some of the folds, with minor chipping occurring along the edges. From the Estate of Malcolm S. Forbes."

Klammern leicht angerostet, ansonsten gutes Exemplar.

Arrangement of the Chinese Characters according to an Alphabetical System with Japanese Dictionary of 8000 Characters and List of 22000 Charakters.

Tokyo, Kobunsha, 1916. Famous study of Russian Orientalist, Sinologist and scholar of Japanese Studies Otto Julius Rosenberg (1888 - 1919) on a system of classification of Chinese characters. Rosenberg studied from 1906 to 1911 at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the University of St. Petersburg, lectured by, among others, the founder of the Russian school of Indology, Sergei Oldenburg (1863 - 1934). During a study stay in Bonn in 1909, Rosenberg befriended Hermann Jacobi (1850-1937), the greatest Indologist and Sanskrit scholar of that time. As part of an internship at the Department of Oriental Languages (SOS) at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität two years later, he also befriended the German linguist and scholar of Japanese studies, Rudolf Lange (1850 - 1933). From 1912 to 1916 he studied Buddhist Literature and Tradition at the University of Tokyo. Here Rosenberg became acquainted with the then leading Buddhist Scholars of Japan. In the course of this stay, he explored the school of Zen Buddhism as one of the first Western scientists and also became an expert for Japanese and Chinese characters used in the writing of Chinese and Japanese. In 1924, his work "The problems of Buddhist philosophy" was published in German. Based on ideas of Russian Sinologist and Buddhologist Vasily Vasilyev (1818 - 1900), Rosenberg developed a method of classification of Chinese and Japanese characters. He published the results of his research in a dictionary which was published in English and Japanese and which formed the basis of the so-called "Four Corner Method", which is still employed today in the creation of Chinese and Japanese dictionaries. This volume is extremely rare and, according to the world's largest bibliographic database, WorldCat, it is only found in six libraries worldwide. The copy offered here was purchased from a Japanese private collection. Boards slightly stained (esp. back cover), otherwise good copy of an extremely rare and fragile item of considerable scientific work with regards to the disclosure of far-eastern language systems.         Arthur Machen autograph letter

The secod of two Machen autograph letters I am listing. 3 page autograph letter dated Jan 10 1916 to 'My dear niece' [since Machen was an only child this would be on his wife's side. His first wife Amelia Hogg died in 1899. His second wife's niece might refer to Sylvia Townsend Warner, the author. I am afraid that there is nothing going at our shop or rather that I can help anybody to anything that is going. As you say we pay & from what I hear "in the street" [Fleet Street?] I believe we are about the only people who do pay. Can you write a persuasive letter to Cecil Ch. [Cecil Chesterton, younger brother of G.K. & editor of 'The New Witness' ] pointing out that this is the time to buy the curious things offering to be his collectors' guide? If so, the enclosed is very much at your service. I have written him a couple of articles for which he has paid me £3 a time, yours Arthur Machen. Machen appears to be referring to The Evening News, which he worked for at this time when he talks of 'our shop'. He may the well be suggesting to Warner - if she is the correspondent - that she apply to Chesterton to buy some work from her. At this time she was only just starting out as a writer. A little darkened at the margins but VG. Letters of Machen's are rare.

An excellent copy with the stud-fastener intact. First edition of this regional survey for the armed services published "For Official Use Only"; volume II, published the following year, was concerned with detailed routes. This applies in particular to the strength and distribution of the Bedouin tribes and to their political relationships. Recent information from native sources has also been used for parts of the Red Sea littoral, such as the little-known region of Asir. The first volume of the Handbook contains geographical and political information of a general character" (preliminary Note). After general physical and social surveys there are specific chapters on the Bedouin tribes,, Hejaz, Asir, Yemen, Aden and Hadhramaut, Oman, the Gulf coast, Nejd, Jebel Shammar, the northern Nefud and Dahanah belts, and settled tribes of the west, south, and centre, the appendix comprises a system of transliteration from Arabic to English, and there is an extensive glossary of topographical terms.

Goliath and David, Poems (Association copy), 1st printing, 1916

London: Privately Printed at the Chiswick Press, 1916. First printing. Paperback. Very Good. First edition of author's second book, published in 1916 in very small number. 8vo, plain red wraps, 20pp, about very good copy with some tiredness to the edges, faint soil, most minor paper loss at spine ends, with bookplate of Percy Withers (1867-1945) to verso of front wrap. Minor association copy: both Withers and Graves were alumni of Somerville College (Oxford), and while Withers made his living as a medic and GP, he had literary ambitions and was friendly with A. E. Housman, Yeats, Edmund Blunden, Max Beerbohm, William Rothenstein, John and Paul Nash, and Alice Meynell, and thus had plenty of chance to interact with Graves, but it is not clear that they figured strongly in each other's lives.

Bullets and Billets. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR

Grant Richards, [1916]. 8vo., First Edition, with a portrait frontispiece (original tissue guard present), illustrated title, 17 plates and numerous illustrations, all by the author, in the text, some mild spotting to text and fore-edges (rather heavier on half-title and a few leaves); original red pictorial cloth, upper board and backstrip blocked and lettered in black, upper hinge starting (exposing webbing but binding wholly sound), a good copy. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR ON HALF-TITLE. Bairnsfather's first book, and the only one written and illustrated by him and published during the Great War, provides a light-hearted account of his experiences as an 'Old Contemptible'. It covers arrival France in 1914, life in the trenches in 'Plugstreet Wood' (including the notorious Christmas Truce'), the birth of 'Old Bill' and 'Fragments', and his blighty one received during the first gas attack at Second Ypres (April 1915). The sequel 'From Mud to Mufti' appeared in 1919. This is arguably Bairnsfather's most iconic title, containing several of his best-known cartoons including 'Chuck us the Biscuits', 'Shut that blinkin' Door' and, of course, 'Old Bill' himself. Signed copies are scarce. Holt, p.244.

The colophon states: "Of this book, in addition to the regular edition, there have been printed and numbered one hundred and seventy-five copies deluxe, of larger format. Numbers 1-50 on French hand-made paper, containing four facsimiles of manuscripts and a second set of illustrations in portfolio. Numbers 51-175 on Van Gelder paper." This is copy 37/50 copies deluxe on French hand-made paper signed by D.B. Updike, with the facsimiles, and with the portfolio of twenty two prints. With the introduction by Theodore Roosevelt. With original contributions from many of the leading artists and writers of the day, all solicited by Wharton to create a book to help finance her war efforts on behalf of the French refugees streaming into Paris; including Rupert Brooke, Paul Claudel, Jean Cocteau, Joseph Conrad, John Galsworthy, William Dean Howells, Thomas Hardy, Henry James, W. B. Yeats, George Santayana, Igor Stravinsky, Léon Bakst, Max Beerbohm, Charles Dana Gibson, Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Rénoir, Auguste Rodin, and John Singer Sargent. Wharton was disappointed that Rudyard Kipling did not contribute. The book was a success at publicizing her campaign for the homeless. What was an equal success was the auction after publication of the original art work and manuscripts. "It was undoubtedly the most prestigious of the memorial books produced during the war and received excellent press coverage and reviews. The New York Times Book Review observed that its famous contributors 'have given their best' " (from Shari Benstock's Edith Wharton: A Biography). For a fascinating account of the production of the Book of the Homeless, see Alan Price's "The Making of Edith Wharton's The Book of the Homeless." A former library copy with marks professionally removed or reduced. Bottom cover rubbed; minor spotting of the end papers; still a very good copy of this rare deluxe printing with the very rare portfolio of prints in occasional foxing in very good condition.
