BIOLOGIE DER ETHIK [WARMLY INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR TO ISRAEL ZANGWILL]

Leipzig : B. Elischer, 1916 - 1st Edition. Original Boards. 8vo. 224 pages ; 20 cm. In German. Title translates into English as, "Biology of Ethics. " This copy is inscribed by Nordau to Israel Zangwill in August 1922 on the first page, "to my (dear) friend Israel Zangwill, (fondly) yours, M. Nordau. Paris August 19th 1922." Zangill, Nordau, and Herzl were chums; a recent article on Zangwill in the Times of Israel noted that "Zangwill made the jump into journalism and at the same time began his involvement with Jewish emancipation. He met and became fast friends with his fellow writers, Theodor Herzl and Max Nordau, even hosting Herzl in London at the turn of the century" (August 28, 2015) . Max Nordau (1849-1923) was a co-founder of the World Zionist Organization. He was a political Zionist, not a cultural or religious Zionist, having ceased being an observant Jew at eighteen, instead becoming a "militant naturalist and evolutionist, " and making his fame with Die Conventionellen Luegen der Kulturmenschheit, first published in 1883. Also at eighteen, he started his career in journalism, on the staff of the Pester Lloyd. While condemning modern culture and politics, the situation of the Jewish people was never far from Nordau's mind. He met Theodor Herzl in 1982, and soon after began discussing the possibility of a Jewish state with him. He was vice president of the First through Sixth Zionist Congresses, and president of the Seventh through Tenth. (EJ, 2007) "Zangwill was a British author at the forefront of cultural Zionism during the 19th century, he was a close associate of Theodor Herzl. He later rejected the search for a Jewish homeland and became the prime thinker behind the territorial movement. " (Wikipeida, 2016) SUBJECTS: Ethics. Evolutionary. Some browning. Smudges to the words "dear" and "fondly" in the inscription. Oveall about very good condition. (SPEC-42-25) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Geological Ancestors of the Brook Trout and recent saibling forms from which it evolved

New York: Published for The Anglers' Club of New York by Tobias A. Wright, 1916. First edition, No. 159 of an edition of 300 numbered and signed copies, this copy (oddly enough) unsigned on limitation page. Portrait, two plates in black and white, and eight plates of trout in color. 1 vols. 8vo. Original green calf, gilt lettered quatrain from Tennyson's "The Brook" on upper cover beneath an inset landscape photograph. New green morocco spine. Wear and soiling to boards, still a sound copy of a scarce book. First edition, No. 159 of an edition of 300 numbered and signed copies, this copy (oddly enough) unsigned on limitation page. Portrait, two plates in black and white, and eight plates of trout in color. 1 vols. 8vo. Inscribed. A most interesting book, partly scientific, partly lyrical (the author, a distinguished physician, includes samples of his poetry) which moves from a discussion of early angling books, through the characteristics of the ideal angler, to the discovery of a new species of trout at Lake Sunapee, NH, and from there to the ancestors and lines of evolution of the Salmonid race. A rare and sought-after work, and the first book published by The Angler's Club of New York With 10-line inscription to J.S. Judge on flyleaf, beginning, "To the Fisher who baskets the whim whams & whacks/ Of our highest grade imbecile income tax/ So patient, so Knowing, so wise & so straight, / I send, with my best, this package of bait./ But whether you angle for taxes or fish ..."         Lithographisches Skizzenbuch 1916 (lithographic sketch book) 1/30 copies

München: Published by the author, 1916. Limited First edition. Hardcover. f to vg. Folio (15 3/4 x 11"). Unpaginated. [45] leaves. Original 3/4 morocco over paper covered boards, with gold lettering to front cover.Dedicated to Arthur Böthlingk (1849-1929), a famed German historian, Robert Genin's "Lithographisches Skizzenbuch" is a stunning collection of 97 in-text and 7 full-page sketches, all in lithographic printing. Most lithographs are colored by hand. The seven full-page lithographs at rear are handsigned in blue pencil by Genin himself. Self-published in 1916 during the artist's internment in Munich as citizen of a hostile state (Russia), Robert Genin's lithographic sketch book sheds a valuable light on the artist's ardent and tormented soul. The first sketches depict Genin's native town in Russia and some of its people followed by a few illustrations of Cairo, Egypt. Most of the sketches that follow depict sad-looking workers; drunkards; a widow with her children; a woman holding her dead child, etc..One of only 30 copies, of which this is No. 26.Binding rubbed along edges with some abrasion to leather. Head and tail of spine slightly chipped. Closed tears along joints. Some darkening and soiling to covers. Text in German. Binding in overall fair, interior in very good condition. About the author: Robert Genin (1884-1941) was a Russian artist, painter, draftsman, and illustrator of Jewish origin, who lived in the Russian Empire, Germany, France, Switzerland and the USSR. In 1912, he became one of the founding members of the artists group Sema, and in 1913 became a member of the Münchener neue Secession. The outbreak of the First World War was a disastrous turn for his rise in the German art scene, and during the war Genin was interned in Munich as citizen of a hostile state. After the war he moved to Berlin. Over the period of 1915-1926, Genin's styles of painting and drawing developed in line with the direction of German expressionism. In 1929, he moved to Paris where his artistic style developed further under the influence of Fauvism and Neo-primitivism. In 1936, Genin finally returned to the USSR, with the intention of taking an active part in building up the new socialist society by painting frescos on the walls of Moscow's new buildings. He committed suicide on August 16, 1941, a few days after a devastating air raid by German bombers.

Map of China Compiled From the Latest and Most Authentic Surveys.

Large folding map printed in black and red, 67 x 62 inches in six sections, mounted on linen and folded, enclosed in the original cloth case with printed title and paper label as key. Fine. The Asiatic Petroleum Company was a joint venture between the Shell and Royal Dutch oil companies and was founded in 1903. It operated throughout Asia from the start of the 20th. Century with its headquarters on the Bund in Shanghai. This map would appear to reflect the growing market for oil products throughout China, a market which, by the start of the Second World, had expanded to over 1000 sales outlets across some 20 provinces. Edwin Dingle, who was responsible for this map along with H.J.Fruin, lived in China for over twenty years and in 1917 published The New Atlas and Commercial Gazetteer of China which served as the standard reference for many years and was described as the " biggest and best book on the resources of China." A rare and highly detailed commercial map of China. The box containing the map is stamped " Travelling Engineer" which suggests that only a limited number of copies would have been produced specifically for the Asiatic Petroleum Co., thus accounting for its scarcity.

Quarto, original pictorial printed wrappers. $2500.First edition of the piano score, signed by the composer: “Edward Elgar / July 1918.”English Romantic composer Edward Elgar, 1857-1934, wrote The Starlight Express as incidental music to Algernon Blackwood’s play A Prisoner in Fairyland. “Elgar’s music put back the poetry partly lost in the stage version… The songs are only part of a long score which is a captivating blend of Edwardian light music and Elgar’s more thoughtful tones. What might be called the ‘creative fire music’ is as stirring as any he imagined” (New Grove 6: 125).         Address of President Wilson

1916. First Edition . Signed. WILSON, Woodrow. Address of President Wilson… September 4, 1916. WITH: Address of President Wilson… July 4, 1918. WITH: Typed letter signed. November 1, 1915. Washington: Government Printing Office, 1916, 1918. Together, three items. Slim octavo, original self-wrappers; pp. 5; 5; plus one typed page. Housed together in a custom cloth portfolio (typed letter is tipped to inside front cover of portfolio). $3800.First separate official printing of President Woodrow Wilson's July 4, 1918 address, signed by him and presented to English poet and playwright John Drinkwater, together with a first separate printing of the President's September 4, 1916 address, inscribed by Wilson's secretary ""To Mr. John Drinkwater, with the sincere regard of Joseph P. Tumulty."" Also included is a November 1, 1915 typed letter signed on White House stationery from President Wilson to Fred Yates, discussing receipt of a volume of Drinkwater's poems: ""Please thank John Drinkwater very warmly for me for his generous thought of me. I shall look forward with the greatest pleasure to reading through his little volume 'Swords and Ploughshares.' What you tell me of him attracts me mightily."" From Drinkwater's personal library, with his morocco bookplate and a small initialed annotation. In 1918 the 36-year-old Drinkwater was the general manager of the Birmingham Repertory Theatre—""a position that included acting, directing, and play-writing as well as the more ordinary managerial duties. By 1918, when he left Birmingham in triumph to take his own play, Abraham Lincoln, to London and thence to New York, he had played about forty parts at the new Repertory Theatre and directed sixty productions in six years"" (ODNB). Perhaps during this visit Drinkwater had occasion to meet the President; he had certainly been brought to the President's attention several years before by the President's friend, the artist Fred Yates (1854-1919), recipient of the enclosed signed letter mentioning the poet. ""Drinkwater returned from America in 1920 a famous man, much respected for his plays and his poetry"" (ODNB).The July 4, 1918 Address, which Wilson has signed, revisits America's struggle for independence and liberty and makes clear the President's resolve to see the nation's involvement in the First World War through to victory: ""There can be but one issue. The settlement must be final. There can be no compromise. No halfway decision would be tolerable."" Wilson makes clear the ""ends for which the associated peoples of the world are fighting and which must be conceded them before there can be peace"": 1. the destruction of every arbitrary power that can disturb the peace of the world; 2. the settlement of every question of territory, sovereignty, or political arrangement based on the free acceptance of the people involved; 3. the consent of all nations to conduct themselves ""by the same principles of honor and of respect for the common law of civilized society""; 4. the establishment of an organization of peace to make certain ""that the combined power of free nations will check every invasion of right."" ""What we seek is the reign of law, based upon the consent of the governed and sustained by the organized opinion of mankind."" The war would drag on for another four months, finally ending on November 11, 1918. The September 4, 1916 Address, inscribed to Drinkwater by Wilson's secretary Joseph Tumulty, delivered before the U.S. had entered the First World War but while it had already been raging for two years, is a speech ""on the occasion of the acceptance by the War Department of a deed of gift to the nation… of the Lincoln birthplace farm at Hodgenville, Kentucky."" Tumulty served as Wilson's private secretary from 1911 to 1921. With Drinkwater's morocco-gilt bookplate on portfolio, as well as an initialed annotation in his hand, ""Inserted is a letter from W.W. to Fred Yates, who had sent him my poems. J.D."" The typed letter is tipped to the portfolio.A bit of minor edge-creasing to 1916 Address; 1918 Address, signed by Wilson, clean and fine. A distinguished signed association copy.

Drawings of the Flags in Use at the Present Time by Various Nations. Admiralty.

      - London, HMSO 1916. Stout quarto later half morocco; 40pp, extra colour litho title, two unnumbered and 201 of 203(?) colour litho plates numbered to 200 with three bis. Two of the original plates have been removed but this has been extended with the insertion of another 145 colour litho plates of varying sizes and one handpainted plate. Signs of use of course but the flaws are negligible really. A splendid copy of a book scarce enough in any form - it was produced for the public service - this copy has been scrupulously kept up to date for a decade with the insertion of the additional plates as they were issued and numerous notes in manuscript, duplicated typescript and print recording official errata and updates. These date from 1916 to 1925. A note preserved at the front records that this belonged to L.E. Forsyth of E.H. Brett & Sons of Balmain East (in Sydney), "flag manufacturer - specializes in printing (in lieu of painting) of colonial & foreign badges on flags". Brett & Sons began as sailmakers and expanded into various canvas and textile related fields as the century went on.
