        Alruner.

      - Gyldendal, Copenhagen 1916. 8vo (20x14,5 cm). 45 pages. With frontispiece litography after drawing by Edvard Much; signed in the plate. Size of plate:14,3x7,4 cm. Bound untrimmed with orig. soft cover in a fine binding with spine and corner of black goatskin and with contemporary matching black-on-green paper on boards (Ole Olsen). * Fine copy of this attractive book. One of 350 numbered copies. Printed by Danish master-printer Kristian Kongstad. Emanuel Goldstein (1862-1921) had earlier - in 1886, under the pseudonym Hugo Falck - published these "psychological" poems under the title "Vekselspillet". They were reissued in 1892 under Goldstein's real name. Munch and Goldstein were friends, and Munch agreed to illustrate this edition, which were issued in only 350 copies, with a motive catching the emotional atmosphere of Goldstein's symbolistic poetry.** The printed frontispiece is sometimes erraticaly taken for an etching, which it is not, unfortunately. However, it is a strong image indeed, with a genuine expression of spleen the Munch way. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

        Green Branches

New York: The Macmillan Company, 1916 - 'JS' Bound by 'AS'[BINDING]. STEPHENS, James. Green Branches. New York: The Macmillan Company, 1916. First American Edition. Limited to 500 copies. Octavo (8 3/16 x 5 11/16 inches; 208 x 145 mm.). 32 unnumbered leaves printed on one side only.Bound in 1922, stamp-signed "A - S 1922" in gilt on rear turn-in. Full dark green levant morocco, covers decoratively tooled in gilt with a framework of flowers and stems surrounding a gilt ruled border which in turn surrounds another gilt border with similar floral tools in the corners and top and lower edges. Spine with five raised bands, decoratively tooled with the same floral design in compartments. Gilt ruled board edges, and wide turn-ins with triple gilt rules and the same gilt flower ornaments in the corners, all edges gilt. Minimal darkening to spine. A very fine example.Although we have been unable to ascertain the identity of "A - S" this binding is most likely by a student of one of the great binders of the early twentieth century. It is unusual inasmuch as all of the six spine panels have been decoratively tooled in gilt - but with no lettering.James Stephens (1880-1950) was an Irish novelist and poet. By the early 1900s James was increasingly inclined to socialism and the Irish language and by 1912 was a dedicated Irish Republican. He was a close friend of the 1916 leader Thomas MacDonagh, who was then editor of "The Irish Review" and deputy headmaster in St Enda's, the radical bilingual school run by P.H. Pearse and would be manager of the Irish Theatre, and spent much time with MacDonagh in 1911. He produced many retellings of Irish myths and fairy tales. His retellings are marked by a rare combination of humor and lyricism -Deirdre (1923) and Irish Fairy Tales (1920) are often especially praised. He also wrote several original novels including The Crock of Gold, Etched in Moonlight, and Demi-Gods based loosely on Irish fairy tales. The Crock of Gold in particular has achieved enduring popularity. Stephens began his career as a poet under the tutelage of George William Russell, 1867-1935, the Irish writer, editor, critic and poet who wrote with the pseudonym "Æ". His first book of poems, Insurrections, was published in 1909. Green Branches contains three poems (The Autumn in Ireland: 1915; The Spring in Ireland: 1916 and Joy be with us) was written just before The Easter Rising (also know as the Easter Rebellion), an armed insurrection in Ireland during Easter week. Stephens's influential account of the 1916 Easter Rising, The Insurrection in Dublin, describes the effect of the deaths by execution of his friend Thomas MacDonagh and others. Stephens lived between Paris, London and Dublin. During the 1930s he was a friend of James Joyce, and they mistakenly believed that they shared a birthday. Joyce, who was concerned about his ability to finish what later became Finnegans Wake, proposed that Stephens assist him, with the authorship credited to JJ & S (for "Jameses Joyce & Stephens", but also a pun on the popular Irish whiskey made by John Jameson & Sons). The plan was never implemented, as Joyce was able to complete the work on his own. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Mountain Interval

New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1916 First edition, first state, with line 8 in duplicate on page 88 and "Come" for "Gone" on page 93 line 16. Publisher's dark blue cloth, lettered and ruled in gilt. Near fine, with a hint of rubbing to the spine ends and corners, just a touch of faint toning to the spine, former owner's 1916 inscription to the front free endpaper, otherwise clean interior. A very bright and attractive copy. Crane A4. Mountain Interval is Frost's third published collection of poetry, and is the first appearance of "The Road Not Taken." It also includes the poems "Christmas Trees," "In the Home Stretch," "Birches," "Snow," and "The Bonfire," among others. Throughout the volume, Frost grapples with how the choices of the past ultimately shape the future. "The Road Not Taken," the first and most famous poem of the collection, sets up this paradigm with the narrator's decision of which direction to take after reaching a fork in the road - a metaphor for decisions made along the road of life. While he had previously established his talent for verse with his first two poetry collections, Mountain Interval solidified Frost's status as a master poet.. 1st Edition.. Hard Cover. Near Fine.

Diary of a Journey through the Sinai Peninsula and Arabia in 1914.

London: [for the author,] 1916 - Octavo. Original red buckram, title gilt to the front board. Just a little rubbed, spine mildly sunned, endpapers lightly browned, pale toning to the text, couple of short tears – no loss – to the map, a very good copy. With 16 plates, folding map. First and only edition, uncommon, just eight copies on OCLC. Brockbank was born into a wealthy Mancunian Quaker steel family in 1870, and was educated at Cambridge. He made several trips to the Middle East in search of the "Holy Land" of the scriptures, on this occasion spending "exactly five weeks and a day under canvas in the Desert of the Exodus and Arabia, and during the time covered 400 miles on camel and 700 miles on horseback", from Port Said to Jerusalem. Despite Brockbank's evangelicalism – he founded a working-class chapel, Ivy Cottage, at Didsbury in 1893 which still thrives today – his diary-form narrative is more chattily descriptive than preachy, and is much enhanced by the plates from the author's own photographs. An interesting and well-produced privately-published travel journal. [Attributes: First Edition]

A collection of ink, wash and pencil designs on 56 sheets, with some additional fabric and print samples.

England, 1916-1926. - A design portfolio, mostly dating from the last years of the Great War, made by one W. How, who otherwise unknown, but presumably a young woman studying commercial design at a British college of art and design. The formal and informal elements of the collection, which includes many superb pencil and wash designs together with fabric and wallpaper samples, bridge the Arts and Crafts movement of the early century and a striking emergent modernism. These spectacular designs are mostly formal exercises in pattern design, with an emphasis on the construction of repeating patterns, interchange, and counterchange (designs in which a certain colour of a motif and its ground are reversed in another part of the design). Also included are a number of more experimental designs, strikingly modernist, usually single panels, some elements of which are incorporated into the formal exercises. In several cases the time taken to make each sheet is noted (usually several hours), reflecting the commercial background of this formal training. The manuscript captions provide a key to each assignment, and some of the designs are marked with tutor's comments ('good', 'beautiful', excellent', 'all units too separate', 'good set but panel decoration has a sense of dropping at the centre', 'you want to try and get your units to unite' etc).Indian, geometric, floral, animals, cretonne, One rough pencil sketch in on the verso of a letterpress flyer for a benefit exhibition at Welwyn Garden City for the Women's Committee for the Relief of Miner's Wives & Children, at which pictures by Brangwyn, Nash, Rothenstein, Spencer and Fry were on sale, inadvertently providing a neat context for our designer's work. Ink, wash and pencil designs on 56 sheets, with some additional fabric and print samples. The sheets of varying sizes (the largest c. 550 × 380 mm). Manuscript captions and annotations in pencil. A few sheets folded, most with pinholes at each corner. Loose in a folder.

[Title in Arabic] Ta'rikh Sina al-qadim wa'l-hadith wa-jughrafiyatuha …

Cairo: Matba'at al-Ma'arif,, 1916. (The History and Geography of Sinai Ancient and Modern, with a summary of the histories of Egypt, Syria, Iraq and the Arabian Peninsula with regard to their commercial and military relations by way of Sinai, from the beginning of history to the present day). Octavo (244 × 160 mm). Original green cloth, titles to spine and front board gilt. Photogravure portrait frontispiece, 27 similar plates, some 100 illustrations from photographs to the text; 3 sketch maps of Sinai quarantine station for returning pilgrims, the Arabian Peninsula and environs and the Ottoman military advance through Sinai in 1915; large folding map of Sinai to rear of volume (1:750,000) opening to approx. 70 × 50 mm with contour lines in red. Rather worn, some bleeding to edges from cloth, light toning, rear hinge split. A good copy. First edition. Three detailed chapters cover the geography, Bedouin and history of the Sinai Peninsula; in the preface Shuqayr writes that the book was about to go to press when war was declared in 1914 and he decided to extend the scope of his study with a "conclusion" (khatimah), not so much a conclusion as "a history of the Arabs before and after the advent of Islam, in the Arabian Peninsula and beyond" (p. 6). Na'um Shuqayr (1863–1922) was born in Choueifat, Beirut and studied at the Syrian Protestant College, now known as the American University of Beirut. On graduating he moved to Egypt and worked in military intelligence, initially for the Egyptian Army. He was then transferred to the Sudan, where he served under Lord Kitchener and Sir Reginald Wingate, the dedicatee of the present piece, and gathered intelligence on Mahdist forces – an experience which culminated in his 1903 study of the Sudan. He was later posted to Sinai with a brief to maintain peace between the Bedouin tribes, serving there during the Khedival–Ottoman border dispute of 1906. The photographs are mainly derived from other works in French, Arabic and English, including Sutton's My Camel Ride from Suez to Mount Sinai (1913), with some original images, but Shuqayr does not make quite clear which ones these are (p. 7). The excellent folding map to the rear, however, is explicitly the author's own revision of the most complete map of Sinai then available, originally produced by the British War Office. Scarce: Copac locates just two copies in the British Isles (Oxford and Cambridge) with OCLC adding seven in the US and four across Israel and Lebanon.

        Autograph lettercard signed.

Sheykh Obeyd Stud, Ain Shems, Egypt, 19. VI. 1916. - 8vo. 2 pp. To "Dear Mr Kemp": "Your letter came too late yesterday to reply. For the post goes before it arrives! I am always to be found a little before 5, between ½ past 4 and 5 p.m., because at that hour I watch the watering of the horses, and I shall be very glad to see you at that also tea-hour. - You perhaps have heard of the death of Sheykh Mutlak who was a valued friend as well as a 'retainer'. He had been ill for a long time. - So that looking after things presents my going off the premises needlessly and I never do except Sunday mornings and if business compels some other mornings at very rare intervals. - I shall be much interested in hearing about your Pyramid work [.]". Together with her husband, the poet Wilfred Scawen Blunt, Anne Blunt founded the Crabbet Arabian stud. To this day, the vast majority of purebred Arabian horses trace their lineage to at least one Crabbet ancestor. The Blunts came to Syria in 1878 to locate the best Arabian horses for their stud. "Their strategy for obtaining breeding stock was to go into the desert to buy from the Bedouins who bred the horses. They wished to acquire the original old blood-lines with a provenance beyond dispute" (Lovell). - Traces of folds; old mounting tab on reverse.

(Willy Pogany and his Work. eight-page leaflet).Willy Pogány, born in Szeged, Hungary, in 1882, studied at Budapest Technical University and in Munich and Paris. Skilled in an unusually wide range of media, he had won gold medals at exhibitions in Budapest, Leipzig, and at the Panama Pacific International Exhibition."Among Pogány's many murals are those for the Heckscher Children's Theatre in New York City and the Niagara Falls Power Station. As a painter he did portraits of famous people in all walks of life. An expert on scenery design and lighting effects, Pogány also designed sets for ballets and operas, including "Le Coq d'Or," and for many films, such as Modern Times for Charlie Chaplin as well as animated cartoons based on his children's books."Among his other artistic endeavors Pogány was an accomplished book illustrator. It was this phase of his career, especially as an illustrator of children's books, which gives this collection special relevance for Special Collections & University Archives at the University of Oregon Libraries. Pogány designed and illustrated more than 150 books. His illustrations include those for the Rubaiyat and the Sonnets from the Portuguese, The Song Celestial, The Adventures of Odysseus, Gulliver's Travels, and many others, both classic and original."Working tirelessly right up until the end, Willy Pogány died in 1955" (University of Oregon, Guide to the Willy A.
