Howl And Other Poems (SIGNED ASSOCIATION COPY)

San Francisco, California: City Lights Books. Fourth printing. Pamphlet. Very Good. 44 pp. 16mo - over 5¾ - 6¾" tall. The Pocket Poet Series Number Four. 75c price on back cover. Introduction by William Carlos Williams. Warmly inscribed by Ginsberg to his good friend and fellow Beat poet Harold Norse (1916-2009) on the title page with a quirky drawing by Ginsberg on same. A disciple of William Carlos Williams and close colleague of Paul Bowles, Charles Bukowski, Tennessee Williams, William Burroughs, Gregory Corso and Allen Ginsberg, Harold Norse was "a poet who broke new ground beginning in the 1950s by exploring gay identity and sexuality in a distinctly American idiom relying on plain language and direct imagery". Surface wear with cup outline on front cover. Covers toned. Slight crease to bottom right corner affecting pages and covers. Rusted staples have pulled away from front cover but binding is firm and textblock is attached. Text is clean and otherwise unmarked. A fabulous association copy!

Dorchester, Mass:: Walter Baker & Co. Ltd.,. 1916.. Book: Oblong format. 5-1/4" x 8-1/8". Sample box: 5-1/2" (H) x 9-1/2" (L) x 3-5/8" (W). 39 pp. 6 plates at rear of illustrations of chocolate packagings.. Maroon cloth binding, gilt stamped lettering to front board. Oak finish (varnished) box, with gold plate nailed to front with producer details.. Moderate wear to binding of book (light soiling to edges [esp. top of. rear board]). Gutter break between front pastedown and ffep. Modest. wear to sample box, gilt plate and wood slightly scratched and worn.. A VG set.. Sample box includes: 4 glass bottles of chocolates, covered in white canvas shrugs. The four bottles look to contain: Chocolate powder, full sized cocoa beans, finely chopped dark chocolate, and a while powder substance. The bottles of powders have been sealed, but the chopped chocolate and cocoa beans are still able to be opened and seen/smelled. In the door of the sample box are four chocolate samples: a bar of Baker's Sweet Chocolate Vanilla, a small tin jar of Breakfast Cocoa, a bar of pure Baker's chocolate, and a bar of German's Sweet Chocolate. All objects in sample case are in rightful places. The "Baker Chocolate Company" is known as the oldest producer of chocolate in the United States. Dr. James Baker met Irishman John Hannon, a skilled chocolatier on the banks of the Neponset River. Hannon's skill, previously limited to production of chocolate in England and Europe, was funded by Baker and formed the first American Chocolate company "Hannon's Best Chocolate" in 1765. 15 years later, after Hannon disappeared on a trip to the West Indies, his wife sold Baker the company and the name was changed to the Baker Chocolate Company. Baker's sons Edmund and Walter continued in the family business, securing their name with Walter's law studies in copyright and inheritance law. The Baker Chocolate Company offered something remarkable - a money back guarantee were their customers not fully satisfied with their purchase. As a marketing tactic, this idea was pure gold. The company continued to thrive. The Baker Chocolate Company is also well known for their logo of La Belle Chocolatiere - from a 1743-45 portrait by Liotard of a young woman serving chocolate. In 1896 the Baker Chocolate Company was sold to the Forbes Syndicate, which largely expanded the company over the next 30 years by adding further buildings and productions. In 1927 the precursor to "General Foods" cereal company, known as "Postum Cereal Company" bought Baker and moved the production from Dorchester, Massachusets to Delaware. By 1979, Walter Baker & Co. was incorporated into the well-known "Kraft Foods." While . Many b/w photographic images throughout. 6 inserted plates at rear of color illustrated chocolate wrappings/ advertisements for the items.

Through Wahabiland on Camel-back: an Account of a Journey of Exploration in Eastern and Central Arabia

Cairo: Government Press, 1916. Cairo: Government Press,, 1916. Undertaken at the Instance and the Cost of the Royal Danish Geographical Society in 1912. Octavo. Original pale tan cloth, lettered in black to the upper board, panels in blind to both boards, grey endpapers. Boards very slightly finger-soiled, endpapers a little browned, but overall an excellent copy. First edition in English - translated by E.T. Leeds, archaeologist, Assistant to the Keeper of the Ashmolean, and friend of T.E. Lawrence - "made for the Admiralty War Staff and privately printed and issued by the Arab Bureau, Cairo, for official use only," print-run of 100 copies only. Raunkiaer's narrative of his 1912 expedition was first published in Copenhagen by the Royal Danish Geographical Society in 1913. Only two copies on OCLC, BL and Oxford University. Raunkiaer's journey through Iraq, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia - "from Koweit by Bereida to the Wahabite town of Riadh, returning to the coast by way of Hofuf … ground [that] had not been touched by Europeans for a considerable time" (from Raunkiaer's obituary on the Geographical Journal) - came at a time of religious fanaticism, and his account is a lively and highly evocative one; "Days spent lying in camp like this are by no means pleasant … As day follows day, I see myself observed with ever more hostile eyes ... As things are, the rumour of an infidel's approach will spread to Shakrah and other towns in South Nedjd long before I arrive there myself; and the more malignant that rumour, the smaller the probability of escape from my adventure with a whole skin at the end." Raunkiaer survived the expedition, but his health was broken, and two years later he died of tuberculosis in Copenhagen, aged just 25. This copy was originally owned by Alfred Guillaume, Arabist and scholar of Islam, who served in the Arab Bureau in Cairo during the First World War, a few pencilled marks to the margins, and some page notes to the last page of the text. Guillaume's library sold through Thornton's of Oxford in 1969-70.

Maunsel & Co. Ltd. Dublin and London. 1916. Maunsel & Co. Ltd. Dublin and London. 1916. FIRST EDITION. 8vo. (7.4 x 5.2 inches). xiv, 111pp, 16pp publishers adverts, dated september 1916, at the end. Signed by Stephens in blue ink on the title page. Previous owners attractive leather bookplate, with the initial H and E stamped in gilt, to the front paste down endpaper. A hint of spotting to the first few pages otherwise a fine, tight and clean copy in publishers blue cloth with gilt rules and lettering to the spine. Front board with blind stamped ruled lines to the top and bottom of the panel and with gilt lettering. In a good, but mostly complete, example of the scarce original dustwrapper which has been strengthened to the rear of both spine hinges using (removable) professional clear archive tape. Small are of loss to the bottom 0.3 inch and top 0.4 of the spine. The brittle paper has split around the title lettering and is held in place by the archive tape behind it but there are very tiny areas of loss, not affecting any of the lettering. The whole spine is a bit darkened but still very readable. Generally the wrapper looks better than it sounds. A rare survivor. Copies in the original dustwrapper are uncommon, signed ones even more so. ----- Stephens was a staunch Republican and close friend of Thomas MacDonagh, one of the leaders of the Easter uprising and signatory of the Proclamation of the Irish Republic, who was executed on May 3rd 1916. This book is the record of Stephens' own thoughts and experiences of what happened in Dublin, including mention of the execution of MacDonagh, written day by day and here published without any emendation, very shortly after the events. A powerful book, described by the Dictionary of National Biography as a "brilliantly journalistic eyewitness account of the 1916 Easter rising, in which many of his friends and colleagues were killed".

ATTILLIO COMELLI costume designs for The maid of the mountains from 1906, 34 original dwrawings in color.

Original collection of 34 watercolors on size 35x 28cm. with note inscriptions in pencil. not signed. The Maid of the Mountains was one of the three most important musical hits of the London stage during World War I (the other two being a revue entitled The Bing Boys Are Here and the musical Chu Chin Chow, music or scenes from all of these have been included as background in many films set in this period, and they remain intensely evocative of the "Great War" years.[5] Other hit shows of the period were Theodore & Co (1916), The Boy (1917), and Yes, Uncle! (1917). Audiences wanted light and uplifting entertainment during the war, and these shows delivered it.[6] Some of the most popular songs were: "Love Will find a Way", "A Bachelor Gay", "A Paradise for Two", "My life is Love", and "Live for Today". The "romantic" ending, with Teresa finally united to Baldassaré, was personally insisted on by José Collins[1] (in the play as originally written, she ended up with the faithful but less colourful character of Beppo). Beppo and Teresa's duets remain, however, and the role of Baldassaré remains a non-singing part. Attilio Comelli was an important and prolific designer. In Dark's article in Cassell?s Magazine, he remarked that Comelli was renowned for ??the originality and boldness of his enviable colouring?. His designs are to be found in most of the major theatre collections around the world: the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, the Harry Ransome Research Center at the University of Texas at Austin, and the Performing Arts Collection at the Arts Centre in Melbourne.

Die Grundlage der allgemeinen Relativitätstheorie (The Foundation of the General Theory of Relativity).

Johann Ambrosius Barth, Leipzig 1916 - Original Wraps + TP + 3-64, Octavo. First Edition, Monograph Issue, Weil *80a.A "principal work" as noted by Weil's use of the asterisk when listing this article. Weil distinguishes the first issue (as here) by paper size and by the printers mark ("Druck von Metzger & Wittig in Leipzig") on the verso of the title page, with the shortened form on rear wrap which lists seven items published by Barth and dated 1909 to 1916, ending with Ziehen's Die Psychologie (1916)According to Weil, this separately published reprint with new pagination from the Annalen der Physik "is described now as 'the original edition' of this classic paper. There is no indication of the edition, but it was certainly bigger than the usual number of offprints given to an author." Regarding the number of copies regularly printed of offprints, Weil comments in his introduction: "I have often been asked about the number of those offprints. It seems to be certain that there were few before 1914. They were given only to the author, and mostly 'Uberreicht vom Verfasser' (Presented by the Author) is printed on the wrapper. Later on, I have no doubt, many more offprints were made, and also sold as such, especially by the Berlin Academy."Soon after his arrival in Berlin, Einstein published his general theory of relativity (the main paper being 'Die Grundlage der allgemeinen Relativitätstheorie.' in Annalen der Physik, August 1916, 769-822). This marked a major advance beyond the classical gravitational theory of Newton. One of the predictions of the new theory concerned the deflection of light in a gravitational field. In particular, a ray of light coming from a star and passing near the sun should be deflected through an angle of about 1.75 seconds of arc. This prediction was tested by two British eclipse expeditions during the solar eclipse of May 1919, and the result appeared to be in good accord with Einstein's theory.         Seven Pillars of Wisdom

London: Jonathan Cape. London: Jonathan Cape. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine. FIRST TRADE EDITION of Lawrence's remarkable memoirs of the Arab Revolt, in stunning binding by Sangorski & Sutcliffe / Zaehnsdorf. "Lawrence had taken part in the preliminary planning of the Arab uprising and, in October 1916, was ordered to Jiddah to assess the military situation. What followed is recorded in Seven Pillars of Wisdom, a personal, emotional narrative of the Arab revolt in which Lawrence reveals how by sheer willpower he made history. It was a testimony to his vision and persistence and a fulfilment of his desire to write an epic which might stand comparison in scale and linguistic elegance with his beloved Morte d'Arthur and C. M. Doughty's Arabia deserta. Subtitled 'A triumph', its climax is the Arab liberation of Damascus, a victory which successfully concludes a gruelling campaign and vindicates Lawrence's faith in the Arabs. In a way Seven Pillars is a sort of Pilgrim's Progress, with Lawrence as Christian, a figure sustained by his faith in the Arabs, successively overcoming physical and moral obstacles" (Dictionary of National Biography). London: Jonathan Cape, 1935. Quarto, recent full ocher morocco with binder's stamp of Sangorski & Sutcliffe / Zaehnsdorf, gilt design on front board, marbled endpapers, gilt-ruled dentelles, all edges gilt. A FINE COPY.

Autograph Letter Signed to Sir Sidney Colvin, 24 April 1916

Capel House, Orlestone, Nr. Ashford, 24 April 1916. Capel House, Orlestone, Nr. Ashford, 24 April 1916. First Edition. Fine. In the letter Conrad thanks Sir Sidney Colvin (1845-1927) for going to see a bust that was made of him and implies that Colvin wasn't overly impressed with the result. In the letter Conrad mentions that the artist also did busts of Page and Zangwill. Research has found that the American sculptor Jo Davidson (1883-1952) completed busts of both Conrad and Israel Zangwill (1864-1926). According to his memoir, "Between Sittings" (1951), Conrad sat for Davidson in 1915. Davidson was a contemporary of Edward Steichen, Arthur Carles, John Marin, Marsden Hartley, and Laurence Fellows and part of the wave of the Modern School in New York in the early 20th century. & & Sir Sidney Colvin, literary & art critic, was a friend of both Conrad and Robert Louis Stevenson.  Letter is in its original folder, Lot 126, from an Anderson Galleries auction of the collection of E. V. Lucas and comes with the transcription of the letter prepared for the sale. Lucas wrote a biography of Lord and Lady Colvin in 1928, "The Colvins and Their Friends" and may have used these letters in the course of his work. Full transcription of the letter available upon request. 10" x 8" handwritten in fountain pen on both sides, signed "J. Conrad." Printed stationery from Conrad's home, Capel House in Orlestone, Nr. Ashford. Four creases where it was folded in half, twice, to fit in a small envelope. No tears or chips, small stain on front page that may have happened as Conrad was writing. Very clean overall.

A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man

London: The Egoist Ltd, 1916. London: The Egoist Ltd, 1916. First UK edition. Near Fine. One of approximately 750 copies bound for the British market from the first edition American sheets. A Near Fine copy with a few short tears at the spine ends and the spine gilt oxidized (or just very dull), as common, otherwise a lovely copy. Housed in a basic clamshell case. & & The author's first novel, a semi-autobiographical work, that laid the groundwork for his masterpiece, "Ulysses." This novel is more accessible than some of his later work. It tracks the physical, emotional and psychological growth of a young Joyce as he searches for his voice and his path in life, culminating with the decision to pursue his art abroad: "I go to encounter for the millionth time the reality of experience and to forge in the smithy of my soul the uncreated conscience of my race." & & "It is a mosaic of jagged fragments that does altogether render with extreme completeness the growth of a rather secretive, imaginative boy in Dublin. The technique is startling, but on the whole it succeeds." -- H. G. Wells. Near Fine.
