        Two photograph albums of a British WWI soldier in the Palestine Campaign.

      Palestine and Egypt, 1916-1918.. Two albums: 116 and 116 (together 232) black-and-white photographs (vintage prints), mostly c. 8 x 6 cm, set in window pages (square and round windows). Meticulously captioned throughout in white and yellow paint.. Two photograph albums belonging to a British medical officer serving in the Sinai and Palestine Campaign during the latter part of the First World War. While a few of the images show the fading typical of private photos collections of the type, the majority has retained surprisingly crisp contrast, and many contain fine, well-differentiated detail in spite of the extreme lighting conditions under which they were taken, indicating an unusual proficiency of the photographer in exposing and developing his films. Edward Guest, who has signed his name to both inside front covers, served in the 2/1st East Anglian Field Ambulance, part of the 54th Division's Royal Army Medical Corps in the Territorial Force. The first album offers "photographs of the Suez Canal Zone. Ap[ri]l 1916 to Xmas 1916"; the second "contains views of the advance made by the British across the Sin[ai] desert into Palestine 1917-18". The albums are inscribed "Book 2" and "Book 3", respectively; a former "Book 1", which probably contained photographs of army training in Britain, is not preserved with the set. Among the diverse subjects are the Canal and its environs, the officers and men of the Field Ambulance, "light railways running to outposts", trenches, fortifications, and tent camps (with scenes of camp life), an Indian camel corps and transport camels used as ambulances, fishing from pontoon bridges, as well as views of the desert, an expedition into Sinai, shell-shocked men in Gaza, the ruins of shelled buildings, "Turks amo' train after naval gunnery", camping in a dried-up wadi, soldiers' graves in the desert, "laying telegraph wires" (by camel), "making a railway cutting", a railway accident, a cannon captured from the Turkish army, irrigation pumps and vegetation in Palestine, a "Beduin of Palestine", "Arab girls of P[alestine]", humongous desert insects, market scenes and merchants, grilling camel flesh, and ultimately, street scenes in Jerusalem, views of the city, the Mosque of Omar, and Jericho. - The 54th division was moved to the Egyptian Expeditionary Force under General Murray in 1916 and garrisoned the southern part of the Suez Canal. It later joined in the Sinai and Palestine Campaign, suffering heavy losses in the Second Battle of Gaza and fighting in the successful Third Battle of Gaza under General Bulfin. By the end of 1917 General Allenby's forces had taken Jerusalem.

        Illustrations by Hansi and Poulbot

      . Half Morocco. Very Good Minus. Ten mounted caricature postcards by Hansi from the 1916 series, Tetes de Boches (this is the complete series), nine, by Poulbot, all relating to World War One. Hansi, the pen name of Jean-Jacques Waltz (1873 - 1951), was famous both as an illustrator and French patriot, the latter for his unflagging contribution to the French revanchist movement to reclaim the Alsace, lost as a result of the Franco-Prussian War, and returned to France after the First World War. Poulbot (1879 - 1946) was a well-known affichiste celebrated for both his World War One posters and postcards and for his illustrations of Parisian street kids. The Hansi pictures are simple, humorous character portraits rendered in color, while the Poulbot drawings, all black and white line drawings, depict scenes in which the amusing caption explains what is going on. Children figure prominently in the Poulbot scenes; all of them, though, touch on the ongoing war in one way or another. The cards are all attractively mounted onto heavy card stock leaves within rectangular borders. There is no title page as such, but there is a presentation page. This copy was given to Abbe Jean Borde d'Arrere, Aumonier Militaire and Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur, whose name and title is actually mounted onto the page, suggesting that the same album may have been given to a number of honorees. Nonetheless, this is a scarce item, with no copies to be found on OCLC. Poulbot is mispelled on the spine as "Roulbot". Cover substantially edgeworn and rubbed, with cloth mottled and soiled. The interior is tight and clean. Former owner's pencil inscription on ffep.

        Typed letter signed to Gilman D'Arcy Paul

      Baltimore, 1916. <p>Mencken, Henry Louis (1880-1956). Typed letter signed to J. Gilman D&#39;Arcy Paul (1893-1960). 2 pages. Baltimore, n.d. [1917]. 152 x 217 mm. Light soiling and creasing, lower edges a bit frayed, but very good.</p><p>Excellent and characteristically acerbic letter from satirist and critic H. L. Mencken, regarded as one of the most influential American writers of the first half of the 20th century. His correspondent was Gilman D&#39;Arcy Paul, a journalist, diplomat and civic leader in Baltimore.</p><p>The letter opens with a brief discussion of the merits of Mencken&#39;s great friend Theodore Dreiser (1871-1945), whom Mencken championed despite acknowledging Dreiser&#39;s faults as a novelist:</p><p>". . . You tell the horrible truth about Dreiser with surgical accuracy, but he still remains the best of the corn-fed herd. There is something Mary MacLaneish about him: his self-revelations are immense. Howells is too discreet and shallow. James is merely a fifth-rate Englishman. Dreiser really belongs to our fair republic, and shows the Knight of Pythias complex. I wish you knew him. He is more fun than a massacre."</p><p>The other authors referred to here are William Dean Howells (1837-1920), Henry James (1843-1916) and Canadian writer Mary MacLane (1881-1929), author of several scandalous "confessional" memoirs. The Knights of Pythias is an American fraternal organization devoted to the ideals of loyalty, honor and friendship.</p> The letter goes on to mention one of Mencken&#39;s forthcoming books (not named here, but probably the first series of his Prejudices) and touches on his pacifist politics:</p><p>"My book will not appear until after the war. If I printed it now it would have to be expurgated to the point of inanity . . . I shall hold it, insert the ghastly truth, and then throw it overboard while the coroner&#39;s jury is still sitting.</p> "I am 36, overweight, suffer from diabetes, chilblains and malaria, and am conscientiously opposed to war, Woodrow [Wilson] and capital punishment. Let the storm rage!"</p><p>Mencken ends by recommending Willard H. Wright&#39;s Misinforming a Nation (1917), a diatribe against the Anglophilia of the Encyclopaedia Britannica; Wright&#39;s views would have meshed well with Mencken&#39;s own distrust of British "propaganda." Mencken was Wright&#39;s patron and mentor, and had helped the younger author obtain a position as culture columnist for the New York Evening Mail. </p>

        ALS from Jack London&#39;s widow Charmian London (dated on the one month anniversary of Jack London&#39;s death)

      Glen Ellen, CA, 1916. Very Good Plus. Autograph letter signed in black ink on card stock, 7 x 11 cm, dated Dec. 22, 1916. Written recto and verso entirely in Charmian London&#39;s hand, together with the note&#39;s original mailing envelope, also addressed by Charmian. The envelope is neatly opened at the top, retains the flap, and has only minor soiling and wear. The enclosed card has minor soil and a faint crease to the upper right corner. &#11;&#11; Sent from Glen Ellen, CA in reply to a letter of condolence she received after her husband&#39;s death from Captain Samuel W. Noyes of Texas. The letter opens "Dear People: -", Charmian London then expresses her "heart&#39;s best thanks" for their "letter of the 7th" and states near the end "It&#39;s a bad thing / Jack was badly poisoned some way." (London&#39;s Death Certificate names uraemia following renal colic - ie. kidney failure - as the cause of his death. The Cambridge Guide to English Literature [1996] states &#39;. ..he was an unhappy man who could not reconcile his own success with the things he had seen and endured. He died at the age of 40, perhaps by sucide.&#39;). Thus an unpublished letter from Charmian London written on the one month anniversary of her husband&#39;s death, speaking openly to his being "poisoned". Of note is that Jack and Charmian London Correspondence and Papers, of the Utah State University Special Collections and Archives Manuscript Collection, also hold correspondence with Noyes, S.W. dated 1915 July 1, in box 8, folder 5 of their collections.&#11;&#11;

        SPECTRA A BOOK OF POETIC EXPERIMENTS. By Anne Knish and Emanuel Morgan [pseuds]

      New York: Mitchell Kennerley, 1916.. Pictorial boards. Spine a bit tanned with some wear at crown, offset from absent clipping between copyright page and contents page, small scuff at lower corner of upper board, otherwise a good to very good copy. The first edition of the most successful American literary hoax of its generation, here present in a copy of high interest. Spectricism, a deliberate attempt to perpetrate a satirical parody of Imagism and the other "isms" of early 20th century poetry, made its debut with this volume in the early months of 1917 (although the first review appears in November 1916, Boice dates copyright deposit as 17 March 1917 and assigns it to the 1917 section of his Kennerley checklist). Until the spring of 1918, the true identities of the perpetrators were a generally well-kept secret -- in the early months after the publication of this book, perhaps only a dozen people were aware of the correspondence between the pseudonyms and Bynner and Ficke. This copy bears Bynner&#39;s signed presentation inscription: "Dear [?] Ray - Have a laugh on us! Witter Bynner February 4 1917." This would appear to be one of the earliest presentation copies, and as well one of the handful of presentation copies to an intimate who was aware of the identities behind the pseudonyms. It is unlikely that the identity of the recipient can be more than a matter of speculation, but one possibility would be Ray Coyle, the artist who contributed a frontis to Bynner&#39;s privately printed work, THE NEW WORLD (1919). While later presentations, made after the disclosure of authorship, are themselves uncommon, presentation copies made contemporary with publication are as scarce as good examples of Spectricist poetry. BOICE 1917.1.

        DESCRIPTION OF THE EDUCATIONAL EXHIBIT OF COCOA AND CHOCOLATE. Book and Chocolate Sample Box

      Dorchester, Mass:: Walter Baker & Co. Ltd.,. 1916.. Book: Oblong format. 5-1/4" x 8-1/8". Sample box: 5-1/2" (H) x 9-1/2" (L) x 3-5/8" (W). 39 pp. 6 plates at rear of illustrations of chocolate packagings.. Maroon cloth binding, gilt stamped lettering to front board. Oak finish (varnished) box, with gold plate nailed to front with producer details.. Moderate wear to binding of book (light soiling to edges [esp. top of. rear board]). Gutter break between front pastedown and ffep. Modest. wear to sample box, gilt plate and wood slightly scratched and worn.. A VG set.. Sample box includes: 4 glass bottles of chocolates, covered in white canvas shrugs. The four bottles look to contain: Chocolate powder, full sized cocoa beans, finely chopped dark chocolate, and a while powder substance. The bottles of powders have been sealed, but the chopped chocolate and cocoa beans are still able to be opened and seen/smelled. In the door of the sample box are four chocolate samples: a bar of Baker&#39;s Sweet Chocolate Vanilla, a small tin jar of Breakfast Cocoa, a bar of pure Baker&#39;s chocolate, and a bar of German&#39;s Sweet Chocolate. All objects in sample case are in rightful places. &#11;&#11;The "Baker Chocolate Company" is known as the oldest producer of chocolate in the United States. Dr. James Baker met Irishman John Hannon, a skilled chocolatier on the banks of the Neponset River. Hannon&#39;s skill, previously limited to production of chocolate in England and Europe, was funded by Baker and formed the first American Chocolate company "Hannon&#39;s Best Chocolate" in 1765. 15 years later, after Hannon disappeared on a trip to the West Indies, his wife sold Baker the company and the name was changed to the Baker Chocolate Company. &#11;&#11;Baker&#39;s sons Edmund and Walter continued in the family business, securing their name with Walter&#39;s law studies in copyright and inheritance law. The Baker Chocolate Company offered something remarkable - a money back guarantee were their customers not fully satisfied with their purchase. As a marketing tactic, this idea was pure gold. The company continued to thrive. The Baker Chocolate Company is also well known for their logo of La Belle Chocolatiere - from a 1743-45 portrait by Liotard of a young woman serving chocolate. &#11;&#11;In 1896 the Baker Chocolate Company was sold to the Forbes Syndicate, which largely expanded the company over the next 30 years by adding further buildings and productions. In 1927 the precursor to "General Foods" cereal company, known as "Postum Cereal Company" bought Baker and moved the production from Dorchester, Massachusets to Delaware. By 1979, Walter Baker & Co. was incorporated into the well-known "Kraft Foods." &#11;&#11;While . Many b/w photographic images throughout. 6 inserted plates at rear of color illustrated chocolate wrappings/ advertisements for the items.

Raunkiaer&#39;s journey through Iraq, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia - "from Koweit by Bereida to the Wahabite town of Riadh, returning to the coast by way of Hofuf &#133; ground [that] had not been touched by Europeans for a considerable time" (from Raunkiaer&#39;s obituary on the Geographical Journal) - came at a time of religious fanaticism, and his account is a lively and highly evocative one; "Days spent lying in camp like this are by no means pleasant &#133; As day follows day, I see myself observed with ever more hostile eyes ... As things are, the rumour of an infidel&#39;s approach will spread to Shakrah and other towns in South Nedjd long before I arrive there myself; and the more malignant that rumour, the smaller the probability of escape from my adventure with a whole skin at the end." Raunkiaer survived the expedition, but his health was broken, and two years later he died of tuberculosis in Copenhagen, aged just 25. This copy was originally owned by Alfred Guillaume, Arabist and scholar of Islam, who served in the Arab Bureau in Cairo during the First World War, a few pencilled marks to the margins, and some page notes to the last page of the text. Guillaume&#39;s library sold through Thornton&#39;s of Oxford in 1969-70.
