A MODERN ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM CONTAINING "ERIN! THE TEAR AND THE SMILE IN THINE EYES," AND OTHER POEMS

London, 1916. Colophon SIGNED by Sangorski n. Hardcover. 219 x 156 mm (8 5/8 x 6 1/8"). 33, [1] pp., [1] leaf (colophon). Colophon SIGNED by Sangorski. SUPERB JADE GREEN CRUSHED MOROCCO, ORNATELY INLAID AND GILT, BY RIVIERE & SON (stamp-signed on front turn-in), covers framed by swirling leafy fronds bearing gilt flowers and inlaid red morocco berries, large central recessed panel in the shape of a shield outlined in red morocco and densely stippled with gilt and tooled with shamrocks, that on the upper cover with a central green morocco rectangle bearing the title, that on the lower cover containing an oval medallion inlaid with the poet's monogram in blue and brown morocco; raised bands, spine compartments with leafy gilt fronds and red berries, gilt titling, turn-ins framed by multiple gilt rules with floral cornerpieces, moss green watered silk endleaves (these a recent replacement), all edges gilt. In an attractive green morocco folding box lined with felt. Titles in red, a handful of initials in blue or red ink with intricate penwork, 25 LARGE, ORNATE INITIALS in colors and burnished gold, many of these with extensions, six of them accompanied by borders of various sizes; a portrait miniature (signed "AS 1916") and full border on title page, A LARGE OVAL PORTRAIT of a weeping Irish maiden within a full border of twining hairline stems, fern fronds, and burnished gold shamrocks, AND FOUR FINELY PAINTED MINIATURES of various pastoral landscapes. Ratcliffe, "Hidden Treasures," SJR-377. Five shamrocks on lower cover missing tiny patches of gilt, a couple of leaves with small dark spots from burnished gold on the opposite side, but A BEAUTIFUL SPECIMEN, clean and bright internally with rich colors and shining gold, and in a glistening unworn binding. Everything about this volume proclaims "Ireland": the green leather binding tooled with gilt shamrocks, the profusion of green and burnished gold shamrocks in the borders, the black-haired, blue-eyed colleen weeping like Deidre of the Sorrows, the peaceful landscapes with soft cloudy skies and rolling green hills, and the text extolling the beauties and virtues of the author's native land. Dublin-born Moore (1779-1852) achieved in his day a popularity among the London literati second only to Byron, a close personal friend for whom he served as literary executor and who contributed to Moore's success in both direct and indirect ways. DNB observes that "in Ireland he was pre-eminent, and on his visits there could rely on an ecstatic welcome at any public occasion." Calligrapher and illuminator Alberto Sangorski (1862-1932) was particularly gifted in capturing the mood of the writings he turned into works of visual attractiveness. The portraits here are especially appealing, and his favored--somewhat melancholy--palette of blue, dark green, and purple in the borders and initials is well suited to these odes to Moore's beautiful but troubled island.

President Wilson Defines Patriotism; Americans Should Serve Òto the utmost limits of self-sacrificeÓ

      - President Wilson Defines Patriotism; Americans Should Serve Òto the utmost limits of self-sacrificeÓ.The outbreak of World War I resulted in an upsurge in patriotism in the United States, even though it was not yet enmeshed in the conflict. One manifestation of this was Americanization Committees that were set up to promote American values and the teaching of the English language to immigrants who wanted to become American citizens. In the spring of 1916, President Wilson was running for reelection and was anxious to associate himself with patriotic sentiments. That is why, in response to an invitation from the Kansas City branch of the Committee, he took the rather unusual step of crafting a statement that reflected his personal view of what patriotism meant. Typed Letter Signed on White House letterhead, Washington, June 19, 1916, to Henry H. Rosenfelt. ÒI have learned with the greatest interest of the plans of the Kansas City Americanization Committee to celebrate Americanization Day at the Polytechnic Institute on the Fourth of July, and want to express to you my very deep interest in the objects of the meeting. I wish I might be there to join with the rest of you in expressing my deep devotion to the great country we all love and should all serve to the utmost limits of self-sacrifice. I hope that the spirit of the meeting may enter into every man who attends it.ÓWilson was not the kind of man who flaunted his patriotism and waved it under everyoneÕs nose. Therefore, statements like this are quite uncommon, this being the strongest such sentiment of his we have had. A few of the words are circled, quite possibly by a newspaper highlighting them for publication. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

One page, one side, 8 3/8 x 10 1/2 inches, blue personal stationery with Tarbell's address. Typed. Letter creased horizontally and vertically, two corners slightly creased. Overall very good condition. In this letter, dated December 30, 1916, Tarbell graciously declines the Secretary's proposal (via Wilson) that she serve on the Tariff Commission: ".I hope that you know that I do consider it a privilege and an honor . I am not physically fit to undertake the work. I have held very confining positions for years, and recently have had to vary my work . It only means, however, that I have had to seek a change of work, not that I am retired. As a matter of fact I was never working harder." Tarbell proposes that she might aid the Commission by "interpreting it to the public . through my professional channels." She makes reference to her tariff work of a few years past, which left her "in a rather anarchist mood on the subject . Still, if I do attempt to write or talk again on the subject, I shall, for the sake of the cause, sink my anarchism and be wise as a serpent." Tarbell's THE TARIFF IN OUR TIMES was published in 1911, and made investigation of how the tariff system benefited businesses rather than the public.

Process (Processes) of Wood-Cut [Woodcut] Printing Explained. ["On a Boat" / "Ferry over the Sumida"]. [Mokuhan junjozuri].

Tokyo, The Shimbi Shoin Ltd., (1916). - Duodecimo. Pp. 4 (Introduction in English), and 20 (i.e. 40) double leaves, folded once in Japanese style, comprising of 20 progressive plates, numbered 1-20, printed from wood blocks. Captioned in English and Japanese. Letterpress tail-piece. Bound in traditional oriental format, tied with red silken threads, upper wrapper hand-printed in full colour from 20 blocks. In a very good condition (minute chip to blank corner-tip of one leaf, well away from image). A lovely book, beautifully preserved. ~ First edition. A second edition apparently appeared in 1938. "The prints made by the process of woodcut printing reproduce the slightest touch of the brush and the most delicate shades of colours in the original, the result being such as can hardly be attained by lithographs." (From the Introduction.) Through 20 progressive colour spreads, each showing separately the added colour and the result on the print itself, the book creates, step by step, a charming, full-colour reproduction, made from 20 different blocks, apparently reproducing Kiyonaga's "Ferry over the Sumida". Very rare.

        Over the Brazier

London: The Poetry Bookshop. G : in Good condition. Cover edges chipped and creased. Wear to lower spine. Foxing throughout. Previous owner's inscription dated 1916. 1916. First Edition. Illustrated card cover. 220mm x 170mm (9" x 7"). 32pp. Cover illustration by C Lovat Fraser. Graves subsequently disparaged his wartime poems and excluded them from the authorised collections of his work. When he delivers himself of lines like 'The whole field was so smelly; / We smelt the poor dog first: / His horrid swollen belly / Looked just like going burst', it is easy to see why. Nonetheless, as mentor and friend to Owen and Sassoon, he remains a pivotal figure in British war literature. 'Over the Brazier' (1916) was his first published work. .
