        Camera Work: Issue Number 48

Alfred Stieglitz, New York 1916 - FIRST EDITION OF ONE OF THE MOST CELEBRATED ISSUES OF CAMERA WORK: Issue number 48, introducing the work of Paul Strand. Complete with 9 original photogravures, including 1 by Frank Eugene, 6 by Paul Strand, 1 by Arthur Allen Lewis, and 1 by Francis Bruguière as well as 6 half-tone reproductions after photographs of '291' by Alfred Stieglitz. With original texts by Marius De Zayas and Marsden Hartley. "When in 1915 Stieglitz saw Strand's radically new approach to photography, which embraced the inherent characteristics of the medium and its materials together with the ideas of the artistic avant-garde, he felt committed, once again, to communicate in Camera Work the importance of photography as a vital art form. Stieglitz had been striving for precisely this synthesis of formal abstraction and poetic expressiveness, a synthesis which embodied an American aesthetic and syntax. In his October 1916 issue of Camera Work, Stieglitz wrote of Strand: 'His work is rooted in the best traditions of photography. His vision is potential. His work is pure. It is direct. It does not rely upon tricks of process. In whatever he does there is applied intelligence. In the history of photography there are but few photographers who, from the point of view of expression, have really done work of any importance. And by importance we mean work that has some relatively lasting quality, that element which gives all art its real significance'" (Kaspar M. Fleischmann in American Photography: Local and Global Contexts). Photogravures entitled (in the order they appear) The Cat by Frank Eugene, New York [Wall Street], Telegraph Poles, New York [Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street], New York [Rooftops], New York [Washington Heights, New York], and New York [City Hall Park] by Paul Strand; Winter by Arthur Allen Lewis; and A Portrait by Francis Bruguière. Containing original articles entitled "From '291'-July-August Number, 1915" by Marius De Zayas and "Epitaph for Alfred Stieglitz" by Marsden Hartley. New York: Alfred Stieglitz, October 1916. Quarto (23 cm x 35 cm, approx. 9" x 12"), original gray wrappers. General edgewear to fragile wrappers with splitting to upper joint of spine. RARE. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Red Sea and Gulf of Aden Pilot

Washington: Published by the Hydrographic Office under the Authority of the Secretary of the Navy, Government Printing Office,, 1916. Comprising the Suez Canal, the Gulfs of Suez and Akaba, the Red Sea and Strait of Bab el Mandeb, the Gulf of Aden with Sokotra and adjacent Islands, and the Southeast Coast of Arabia to Ras al Hadd. Octavo. Original red-brown cloth, title gilt to spine and front board. Folding colour map frontispiece. Bookplate to front free endpaper. A little rubbed and spotted, spine marked and with minor damage at the head, corners slightly bumped, light toning, but a very good copy. First edition of this naval almanac, to be distinguished from the British title of the same name, first published in 1863, though deriving most of its information from the sixth edition (1909) of that publication. Uncommon: only one copy in British libraries (Oxford), though more prevalent in American institutions, and seldom encountered in commerce. Beyond the specifically maritime aspects, including coastal geography, these handbooks did provide basic background on local conditions, climate, items of trade and so forth. Of particular interest is their account of settlements unrecognisable today: Jeddah "is ½ mile square, and inclosed [sic] by a wall, with small towers at intervals, the angles toward the sea being commanded by two forts" (p. 311), whereas Aqaba "is a small Arab village, in an extensive date grove … Close to the village is a small square fort, garrisoned by Turkish soldiers" (p. 278).

An illuminated address (visible image 390 x 260 mm) presented 'To H. Basford Esq. On behalf of the Presbyterian Church of Murray Bridge and Monarto', December 1916.

      - An attractive calligraphic testimonial to the outgoing Honorary Secretary, in blue ink on a two-tone blue background within a decorative gilt border, signed by nine senior members of the congregation. It is surmounted by a large ornamental scroll, a mass of wattle blossom and a large vignette illustration of a paddle steamer towing a heavily-laden barge on the River Murray. The copious amounts of dirty smoke belching forth are starkly realistic - an unexpected bonus on an otherwise routine production. The work is signed 'Niehuus & Lucy, Adelaide'; we are unsure when they commenced work together, but the partnership was dissolved four months after this commission was completed. Minimal foxing and light surface blemishes do not detract from this charming period piece, recently archivally mounted. Use [Ask Bookseller a Question] option below to confirm availability.

Weisheits Perlen eines Wahnsinnigen. Gesammelte Dichtungen des Verfasser's mit etwa 23 Originalbildern Erste und letzte Auflage

Chicago 1916 - A handmade illustrated book written in German of uncommon merit both in its cartoonish illustrations and verse. Indeed, the quality of the production begs the question why the author/artist did not attempt to have this published, although the German text, especially in 1916 America, might have not been helpful to such an undertaking. We can infer from his calling this the first and last edition that he did not hold hope or ambition for further dissemination.

El Dschihad. Zeitung für die muhammedanischen Kriegsgefangenen. Nr. 46. Turkotatarische Ausgabe.

Berlin, 14. XI. 1916. - Folio (469 × 314 mm). 3, (1) pp. Promoting jihad: official policy. The diplomat, orientalist, and historian Max von Oppenheim (1860-1946) had published a memorandum as early as 1914 on "revolutionizing the Islamic territories of our enemies", i.e. trying to persuade religious leaders in the Muslim world to call for a Holy War against colonial powers such as Britain and France. Allied to this was a campaign to try and radicalize Muslim prisoners of war (a mosque was even erected in one camp, Wünsdorf - the first ever built in Germany) through printed matter, such as the camp newspaper "El Dschihad". Circulation began on 5 March 1915, with editions produced in Arabic, Russian, and - the largest print-run - Tartar (reaching 91 issues, the last published on 22 October 1918). Similar newspapers, under different names, were also issued in Georgian, Hindi, and Urdu. The only holdings outside Germany located by WorldCat are at the Hoover Institution (Arabic, Russian, and Tartar editions) and the Library of Congress (Russian edition). Not in COPAC. - Toned due to paper stock; two small wormholes at head; creased where previously folded. ZDB-ID 2079196-3. OCLC 643380726.

        The Luck of The Strong

London, Eveleigh Nash. 1916, 1916. First Edition. 8vo. Publisher's original burgundy cloth, titled in black to spine and front board, sharp and clean with the a slight hint of darkening to the spine. 316pp + 100pp ads dated Spring 1916. Corners sharp. An excellent copy, with none of the usual bumping and scuffing. Internally slightly spotted with foxing to prelims. A scarce collection of Hodgson's 'straight from the horse's mouth' tales of seagoing courage and knavery. William Hope Hodgson was, for the duration of his short life, an amazing man. He ran away to sea, travelled the world, was one of the first men to photograph stalk lightning on the open ocean, ( he was an accomplished self taught photographer), taught self defense to the police force, fought for the rights of cabin boys, annoyed Houdini, founded his own school of fitness, wrote a large body of wierd and macabre fiction (much of which, unsurprisingly deals with the sea), tried very hard at everything he attempted and finally got killed in 1918 as part of an army of young men sent into battle by a Field Marshall whose contribution to history (other than to get them all killed) was to firmly believe that machine guns were overrated and that cavalry were to be the deciding factor on a battlefield which consisted of one giant, flooded pothole. Hurrah for the Empire.

        Zeppelin Nights A London Entertainment

London, John Lane at The Bodley Head. 1916, 1916. FIRST EDITION. 8vo.; pp. 307+ 4 ads. Publisher's green decorated cloth, titles in yellow to front boards, gilt to spine, page edges untrimmed. Discreet Blackwell's label to pastedown, minor bumping to extremities, gilt dulled, otherwise a very clean and tight copy of a lesser known work dealing with Zeppelin paranoia in WWI London, and possibly one of the few places one could encounter a line like; "Her horror slowly upspreads from its nodus on the panting human breast where she squats and crouches." Arguably one of the earliest works of fiction to depict the possible social and psychological effects of an air raid. In addition to this the whole thing is as mad as a sack of ferrets; who christens their child 'Serapion', for crying out loud? Written during his time at the War Propoganda Bureau, shortly after publication of 'The Good Soldier' (1915), and just before Ford, at the age of 41, enlisted to serve with the Welsh Infantry on the Western Front, his experiences inspiring the acclaimed tetralogy 'Parade's End' (1924–1928).

        The Circus and Other Essays

New York: Laurence J. Gomme, 1916. First edition, first issue. [viii], 79, [1] pp. 1 vols. 12mo. Publisher's half brown cloth and boards. Near fine, in orange pictorial dust-jacket with clown holding flaming circus hoop, jacket toned at spine panel, with some chipping to extremities of jacket. With obituary and other contemporary notices and poem pasted in to preliminaries and final leaf, and with manuscript poem, "Joyce Kilmer" by George Steele Seymour, on half-title. With Kilmer ALS from the Front with Mention of His War Poem "Rogue Bouquet" With a fine Autograph Letter, signed ("Joyce Kilmer"), to Miss Olson, written from the front. Headquarters Co., 165th Infantry A.E.F. France, n.d., but after Nov. 1917. 1-1/2 pages, tipped in after title-page. "It was kind of you to send me the book of tickets, and I am honored by thus becoming the guest of the Chicago Woman's Club ... I'm more homesick for [Chicago] than for any other city in America (you see, Larchmont Manor isn't a city) ... I think you will like my poem 'Rogue Bouquet.' I am a sergeant now, and never expect to go any higher. For, to get a commission I'd be obliged to go to school away from the Regiment for some months and when school was over I'd be sent - whether or not I had gained a commission - not back to this Regiment but to some strange outfit. And I'd rather be a sergeant in the 69th than an officer in any other Regiment ..." Kilmer was proud of his position in the "Fighting Sixty-ninth" (though by his time known as the 165th Infantry) and had requested permission to join its ranks. Kilmer was killed in action 30 July 1918 while scouting German machine-gun positions near the Ourcq River.

Hausbau und dergleichen; mit 107 Zeichnungen und Photographien eigener Arbeiten.

Berlin: Bruno Cassirer, 1916. 8vo. Original, worn, but solid hardcover boards. Spine very worn, but still solid. 146 pages. Inside clean.. 1. edition. Very scarce first printing of the most famous of Tessenow's writings, Hausbau und dergleichen ("House-Building and Such Things".). Tessenow (1876-1950) is considered together with Bruno Taut, Erich Mendelsohn, Walter Gropius and Mies van der Rohe one of the most important personalities of German architecture."Tessenow's basic ideas were expressed in his text Hausbau und Dergleichen, a very didactic book in which he goes over the basic and permanent issues of architecture, as well as presenting his projected work until 1916. One of the basic ideas is not to subtract from architecture the dignity that it has gained over the years. This argument was shared by the Italian architects who, during the fifties and after, defended the primordial importance of tradition in architecture, of the effort accumulated during centuries of experience and the distrust versus the experimentalist rhetorics who seek the formal renewal of architecture. Another basic idea is that of identifying craftwork with traditional bourgeois values. This leads him to give importance to the aspiration for order, loyalty and rigour as fundamental bourgeois values. Order, simplicity and clarity are also related to repetition as instruments used by simple people. This makes him tend towards a sort of primitive functionalism, a minimalist architecture that seeks to produce a strong and rich impression by means of repetition. In his books and his work, Tessenow always defended a rigorous research task of the essential forms: "The simplicity to which we aspire can represent the greatest richness, just as the formal variety that we have at our disposal can reveal itself as very poor". (JOSEP MARIA MONTANER)

Album with 20 Original Photographs, Titled on the Front Cover:] Manfred von Richthofen (1892-1918). Photo Album.

1916 - Ca. 1916 - early 1918. Oblong Folio (ca. 24,5x32 cm), 7 card leaves. 20 mounted gelatin silver prints of various size, including two large aerial panoramas ca. 15,5x27,5 cm (6 ¼ x 10 ¾ in) or slightly smaller, and nine large photos ca. 12,5x16,5 cm (4 ¾ x 6 ½ in), the rest of images are ca. 9x13 cm (3 ½ x 5 ¼ in) and smaller. Three images numbered in negative. Handsome recent red full morocco album with gilt tooled decorative frame (with the Iron Cross) and title on the front board, and blind stamped decorative border on the rear border; white moiré endpapers. Two panoramas consist of two parts neatly stuck together, several images with minor silvering, but overall a near fine album. Rare collection of original photographs dedicated to the German Army Air Service (Luftstreitkräfte) during World War I, including some of the last portraits of Manfred von Richthofen. The album opens with two views of Heidelberg and six aerial views of an airfield and a hangar constructed near a West European city, apparently one of the German airbases at the time, in Belgium or France. The photos include two large two-part panoramas and show the aircraft hangar, a small plane on the landing strip, surrounding infrastructure (service buildings, a railway leading to the hangar), and a small European city within medieval star like defensive walls. A series of six photos portray an inspection of a German air force base by the German High Command headed by Paul von Hindenburg, Germany's Chief of General Staff since 1916. There is also a picture of the German mechanics servicing a biplane fighter which is decorated with the iron crosses painted on the tail and wings (late insignia with a simple rectangular cross which was used in March/April - November 1918). The album closes with three important photograph portraits of several of Germany¿s top pilots gathered for the flying contest at the Adlershof aviation testing center outside Berlin in mid-January 1918. The photos depict exactly the same moment as the "Richthofen Film" (part 2) made by A.F.G. Fokker in 1918 (see the original video at Steven Spielberg Film and Video Archive online; copyright by the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum). The first photo shows famous German ace Manfred von Richthofen or "Red Baron" (1892-1918; the top ace of the war, credited with 80 air combat victories) talking to Hans Klein (1891-1944), a German fighter ace credited with 22 aerial victories, awarded with the Iron Cross and the Pour le Merite order, or "Blue Max" in October 1917. The second photo portrays Adolf von Tutscheck (1891-1918), Commander of Jagdgeschwader 2 since February 1918, awarded with the Blue Max in August 1917. On the photo he is shown in a flight hat and wearing his Blue Max. The third photo is a group portrait of six of German fighter pilots (from left to right): Lt. Erich Löwenhardt (1897-1918; the third highest German flying ace with 54 victories, awarded with the Blue Max in May 1918); Oberlt. Bruno Loerzer (1891-1960; commander of Jasta 26, later of Jasta III, the third of the German famous "flying circuses," awarded with the Blue Max in February 1918); Manfred von Richthofen, Lt. Kurt Schwarzenberger (chief test pilot for the experimental fighter division of Idflieg); Hans Klein; Albert Mühlig-Hofmann (1886-1980, commander of the Field Equipment Service of Idflieg). Note that Hans Klein is shown wearing his Blue Max and still possesses his right index finger (shot off in combat on 19 February 1918). These portraits are one of the last depictions of Adolf von Tutscheck (killed in action on March 15, 1918), Manfred von Richthofen (killed in action on April 21, 1918), and Erich Löwenhardt (killed in action on August 10, 1918). Overall a very interesting historically significant photograph collection. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
