Mufti. A Paper devoted to Civilian Interests. Vol. I, No. 1-7 [all published]

Basildon: James Sellar,, 1916. Quarto (298 × 213 mm). 7 four-page issues, accompanied by a 6-page manuscript publication history in a precise and attractive hand, written in 1942 by the main contributor. Housed in black cloth folding case in black quarter leather drop-back box, title gilt to spine. Somewhat browned, some edge-splits, one issue a little cockled, but overall very good. First and only editions. The editor's set of a complete run of this short-lived fortnightly dedicated to conscientious objection, and pacifist opposition to conscription, the editor's set. Extremely uncommon: Copac has BL and perhaps Cambridge; OCLC adds Harvard, Houghton Library and Bibliothèque de documentation internationale contemporaine, Nanterre. An extraordinarily eccentric collection of anti-militarist opinion, its publication stimulated by the inception of conscription. More eccentric still is the tale of its founding, writing, printing and publication, which is fully told in the accompanying history, a unique document giving an insight into the hidden world of "objectors to military service". James Kirkby, of whom we have found no other trace, begins by explaining that, "From April 1914 to April 1916 I was a tenant on sufferance at Islington Turkish Baths … The Baths had been unfortunate, the subject of legal proceedings. They were kept open by a firm of solicitors connected with the proceedings, who had placed in them as resident temporary manager one of their clerks, a bearded Welshman ignorant of Welsh, but full of projects for the remodelling of society on a basis of Tolstoyan anarchism. His name was James Evans." Evans allows a friend of Kirkby's, Stanley Carlyle Potter ?- "who dealt in secondhand books and astrology" ?- to occupy the rooms not taken up by a small shop which "sold babies' caps and special food for vegetarians," which is run by two young ladies one of whom, "the comelier," was "informally attached to James Evans, who had conscientious objections to marriage." Kirkby himself occupied the "skylighted Cooling Room … We lay on Divans and regarded the large and dark oil-paintings all around us." Among the other refugees are three brothers, Jim, Fred and Harry Sellar, who had fled conscription in New Zealand under the Defence Acts of 1912, and their father who set up a small-holding at Basildon in Essex. Fred had "business acumen, some better education, and skill as an amateur printer," and suggests that Kirkby writes something that he and Jim can sell. "I was at the time destitute, living on credit on the little shop; arrangements were soon afterwards made for a small subscription to keep me going." The other major contributor, with a column on the back page, was the Quaker Samuel Veale Bracher, who had set up the Tolstoyan Whiteway Colony in Gloucestershire in 1898. All of them "worked at the composing stick and helped at the working of the Albion press that stood in the middle of the boys' room." They soon hit trouble with Evans, who believed that the founding of Mufti on his premises meant that "it would advertise his nucleus of a brotherhood of man and the goods in the little shop." They are forced to carry the press down to the cellar which was "dreadfully cold even when an oil-stove was kept burning … Our labours were unremitting: we had not enough type to set up all the paper; after printing one side we had to distribute a lot of type before we could complete the setting-up of the other." Finally, at a meeting, "at the Express Dairy Shop at the top of Essex Street, Strand of Bracher, Fred, and myself, on the 15th of May 1916, Mufti was declared dead." By way of summing up Kirkby tells what became of the members of this odd ménage: Evans dead, gored while milking a goat; Jim Sellar married to one of the two "young ladies" from the shop; Harry Sellar "got religion"; and Fred owned a printing business in Middlesex. And, in the midst of another global conflict, Kirby reflects on his present attitude to the principles that motivated Mufti's progenitors: "Though, not being a mystic pacifist like Evans nor a skilful evader-of-issues like Bracher, I am now convinced that the German power must be overthrown by force if life on this planet is to be tolerable … If the Germans had been a nation of Tolstoyans, nothing but misery could have resulted from the Versailles Treaty. They were far from that; and the victorious Powers were such fatheads that they neither helped Germany on to her feet nor firmly held her down." He concludes: "Mufti was not perfect in its wisdom. It was perfect in its punctuation - no other paper then could or now can say that of itself. The French War Museum wrote twice to Jim Sellar to know if there was any more of it. I hope Mufti did nothing to weaken the fibre of France to render easy Hitler's triumph there." An entrée into an unfamiliar British sub-culture of the Great War.

Los Angeles, 1916. [2]pp., on a folded sheet. With photograph of the author. Old fold lines. Very minor soiling. Photograph mounted on cardboard; typed label at bottom of image. Very good. [2]pp., on a folded sheet. Letter written by stage actress Helen Truman, later Mrs. J.T. Wynkoop, who was among the actors on stage at Ford's Theater the evening that President Lincoln was assassinated. Wynkoop writes following an article published about her in the L.A. TIMES, which discussed her life and that evening, and the fact that she was still alive so many years later. She writes, to Mr. A.I. Mudd: "Dear Sir, Yours of June 12 enclosing program of Apl. 14th 1865 received, and thank you very much for sending me one: I did keep several of them, at that time, but they were destroyed when I lost all my papers and wrdrobes in the fire at the Halliday Street Theatre in Baltimore some years later. But one which I had in New York which I gave to Col. T. Alston Brown, when he was writing his "History of the American Stage." I enclose a photo of myself taken about three years ago. When I was first on the stage I appeared under the name of Helen Truman, but as I grew more prominent I took my own of Helen Coleman. I knew that several men of that company that night claimed at times to be the only survivors, and I knew them all personally, and I knew they did not mean it. But when I read an article in the "Times" here that Jenny Gourly thought she was the only survivor, I thought I had better say I was still alive and the "Los Angeles Times" sent reporters to interview me: and printed an article which I am sending you by this mail. If there is any further information you may desire to know, I will gladly answer any questions regarding that time."

A Portrait of The Artist as a Young Man

New York: B. W. Huebsch,, 1916. Octavo. Finely bound by The Chelsea Bindery in dark blue morocco, titles and decoration to spine, raised bands, single rule to boards, twin rule to turn-ins, plain burgundy coated endpapers, gilt edges. A fine copy. First edition, first printing. Due at least in part to the adverse reception of the Egoist serialisation of A Portrait, no English printer would print the book for fear of prosecution under the obscenity laws. So it was Huebsch that undertook the true first publication. He would send from this print run about 750 sets of sheets for issue in the UK in February 1917. Whilst the number of copies issued in America is undetermined the number could not have been large since he had sold out by March and called for a second printing by April. A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man was Joyce's first novel and introduces to the world one of the two key characters in Ulysses. Stephen Dedalus was created by the author as a kind of doppelganger - the author as he would have been had he not left Ireland in 1904. Its opening sentence by itself redefining what a novel could be.

A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.

New York: B. W. Huebsch, 1916 - Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine gilt and to upper board in blind. Cloth lightly rubbed at extremities with a few tiny marks. An excellent copy. First edition, first printing, and a very attractive copy of Joyce's first novel. Due at least in part to the adverse reception of the Egoist serialisation of A Portrait, no English printer would print the book for fear of prosecution under the obscenity laws. It was Huebsch who undertook the true first publication in book form, first published on 29 December 1916. He sent from this print run about 750 sets of sheets for issue in the UK the following February. Although the number of copies issued in America is unknown, it is unlikely to have been large since Huebsch had sold out by March and called for a second printing by April. Slocum & Cahoon A11.         Signed Manuscript Documents - Caucasus Oilfields - Signed By the Only Prime Minsiter of the Short-Lived "Mountainous Republic of the Northern Caucasus", Abdul Tapa Tchermoeff

Grozny, Russia, 1916. Grozny, Russia, 1913-1921. Archive of original documents pertaining to the British investment in the Tchermoeff Estate North Caucasian oilfields, owned by Abdul Tapa Tchermoeff, a leading and most active pioneer of the Grozny oil industry, and the only Prime Minister of the short-lived "Mountainous Republic of the Northern Caucasus" state. Numerous documents are signed in the original by Tchermoef; as well by Sir Frederick Mitchell Hodgson who was a British colonial Governor of the Gold Coast, then Barbados, and British Guiana; as well as other British shareholders, directors, and the like. Also featuring the signature and wax seal of James Whishaw, a pioneering Englishman in the Russian oil market, on a manuscript double leaf vellum indenture. The lot comprises 1 large manuscript survey plan and 33 documents, including legal agreements, letters, shareholder notices, meeting minutes, and indentures (one on vellum). Some age-toning, loss to corner of one letter, otherwise the lot in very good condition, a pleasing archive of consequence in the Anglo-Russian oil connection. A fine example of British investment in the Caucasian oil fields, these legal documents outline the affairs of a company established in London in 1908, the 'Anglo-Russian International Syndicate Limited', which was voluntarily disovled in 1913 to form the 'New Caucasian Oilfields, Limited', specifically relating to investments made in the northern Caucasus on the estate of Abdul Medjid Tchermoeff - the only ever Prime Minister of the Mountainous Republic of the Northern Caucasus, who was forced into exile by the advancing Bolsheviks. Upon the death of his father, a well known Rusian General, Tapa Tchermoeff inherited important oil-bearing land in the Grozny area when he was only 16 years old. Forthwith he immersed himself into economic and industrial activities, capitalizing on British interest in Russian oil. The lot is replete with Tapa Tchermoeff's original signatures, as he remained directly involved in all transactions. [It was the oil industry that transformed Grozny from a small town reminiscent of its position as a Russian military outpost, to a geographical center of Russia's network of oil fields, doubling its population between 1893 and 1913. [On 22 April 1914, The Times from London announced activities of the above Angol-Russo venture, "Caucasian (Tchermoeff) Oilfeilds Limited... Plots adjoining those on which the greatest companies of Russia are drilling wells in the New Tchermoeff-Belik Field, where our wells have already proved the probability of large productions... have acquire favourably situated plots... in the Grosny district. 13 mile from here a well of the Standard Russe Company (Shell) struck in January, 1913... Three other wells hare been brought in and about 30 derricks are now erected... the plan published on this page shows how many plots have been taken up by important oil companies... 'the Standard Russe, New Caucasian Oilfields, Russian and General Oil Corporation..."] Highlights of the archive include: A large manuscript survey plan of the Tchermoeff Estate drawn in now obsolete Russian units of measure, dessatines and sajens. The area encompasses 659 dessatines, 231 sq. saschens, to be leased out for the production of oil and gas, specifically highlighting sections for Grozterek Syndicate Limited. The surveyor includes bordering lands of the Bielik estate, the Komonoff estate leased to Russian Standard (Shell Co.), and the commercial lands of the villages of Aldy and Tchetchen. Plan measures 701 x 62 cm, made on a fine waxed linen, and signed by Tapa Tchermoeff. A detailed geological survey, dated 23/5th August 1913 Baku, in which is examined in fastidious detail, specific plots on the Tchermoeff Estate u, which included extraction and analysis of oil samples, performed for the Anglo-Russian International Syndicate Limited, by F.G. Rappoport of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (M.I.Mech.E.) in London. Royal Quarto, typed bound document, 12 pages plus title page. One string-tied notarized document bearing Russian stamps and the signature of George John Sargent, assistant registrar for the company, whom is certifying an Extraordinary Resolution which increases share holdings. Large vellum indenture with the signature and red wax seal of James Whishaw, a pioneering English businessman in the Russian oil market who lived in St. Petersburg, and stamped by the British Consulate in St. Petersburg. Made in January 1914, this document confirms a deed of September 1913 for the purchase of for all leasehold rights for 5 plots of land on Tchermoeff Estate, and royalties to be remunerated for any oil, gas, or crude oil products extracted. Whishaw has been further appointed as trustee of the company named New Caucasian Oilfields Limited, incorporated in London in 1908. Double leaf vellum, 3 pages in manuscript, hand ruled and measuring 26 x 40 cm. [Of British descent, and born in Archangel, Russia, James Whishaw (1853 - 1935) was one of the first investors in the Baku "oil Klondike" when in 1890 he bought the oil fields of the S. M. Shibayev company, and then, in 1897, those owned by Gadzhy Tagiyev. In the 1890s, other British capitalists led by James Whishaw founded several firms in Baku.] Original Prospectus for subscription in the New Caucasian Oilfields Limited, signed in the original by the company's Directors, including Abdul Tapa Tchermoeff, Sir Frederick Mitchell Hodgson, and Nikolai Speransky, and with the original accompanying plan of the "New Grozny Oilfield" measuring 49,5 x 38 cm. Corporate Merger Agreements, Sale Agreements, Shareholder Loan Agreements, One Expenses Agreement, all pertaining to legal transactions of two Anglo-Russian companies, the New Caucasian Oilfields Limited and its predecessor the Anglo-Russian International Syndicate Limited. Folio double-leaf manuscript documents, measuring approximately 11 x 33 cm. some string-tied, many with revenue stamps, Numerous original signatures from the following individuals, among others: • Abdul "Tapa" Medjid Bey Ortsa Tchermoeff (1882-1937), elite Russian military officer, a distinguished leader in the development of Grozni oil industry, and the only Prime Minister of the Mountainous Republic of the Northern Caucasus • Nikolai Sergeevich Speransky (1857-1909), Special Secretary to the Minister of Finance of the Imperial Russian Government • Sir Frederick Mitchell Hodgson (1851-6 1925), who was Governor of the Gold Coast from 1898-1900, Barbados from 1900-1904 and British Guiana from 1904-1911 • Colonel William Francis Henry Style Kincaid, (late Royal Engineers) was an Assistant Quartermaster-General, Administrative Staff, Aldershot Army Corps, Companion of the Order of the Bath • Lieutenant-General Sir Reginald Pole-Carew (1849-1924), a British Army officer who served as a staff officer with Lord Roberts in the Second Anglo-Afghan War in 1878, and during the Second Boer War, and who was later a Member of Parliament for Bodmin In addition, pertaining to the company's solicitors, Messrs Mayo Elder & Co. we find a summary of titles to royalties from thirteen separate investments in Russian Oil as at 1922, together with 4 manuscript letters relating to Mayo's Gold Coast investments in the Broomasssie mines (1906). Abdul "Tapa" Medjid Bey Ortsa Tchermoeff (1882-1937) was a Lieutenant en Reserve de la Garde Imperial, and the only Prime Minister of the Mountainous Republic of the Northern Caucasus. He was in office from May 11, 1918 until the entire government was forced into exile by the advancing Bolsheviks in 1921. Born in Grozny, Chechnya, Tapa was the eldest son of the well-known General Ortsou Tchermoeff. He was educated in St. Petersburg. In 1901 he joined an elite military unit, His Majesty Tsar Nicholas II's Own Life Guard Convoy. Upon the death of his father, a well known Rusian General, Tapa Tchermoeff inherited important oil-bearing land in the Grozny area when he was only 16 years old. Forthwith he immersed himself into economic and industrial activities, capitalizing on British interest in Russian oil. World War I interrupted Tapa's economic activity. He joined the famous native Savage Division of the Imperial Russian Army with the rank of Captain. In the war he proved himself a brilliant military leader and a fearless soldier. After the October Revolution, Tapa returned to his native land intent to preventing the rise of Bolshevism in Chechnya. Believing that the unification of all Caucasian highlanders would be the only means of staving off the Northern Caucasus from the Bolsheviks, on his initiative the various groups decided to form an independent highland state. On 11 May 1918 The Mountainous Republic of the Northern Caucasus was officially established. Tapa was first the prime minister and then the minister for foreign affairs. Early in March 1919, Tapa headed a delegation to Paris in an attempt to take part in the Treaty of Versailles, in hopes to secure the recognition of the independence of the state. Alas, the following year later the North Caucasus were in the hands of the Bolsheviks and in January 1921 the Soviet Mountain Republic of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic was established. The Mountainous Republic of the Northern Caucasus (1917-1920) was a short-lived state situated in North Caucasus (Ciscaucasia). It included most of the territory of the former Terek Oblast and Dagestan Oblast of the Russian Empire, which now form the republics of Chechnya, Ingushetia, North Ossetia-Alania, Kabardino-Balkaria, Dagestan and part of Stavropol Krai of the Russian Federation. The "Union of the Peoples of the Northern Caucasus" was created in March 1917, and an Executive Committee of the Union was elected. The Chairman of the Executive Committee was one of the leaders of the National-Liberation movement of the Peoples of the Northern Caucasus, Tapa Tchermoeff. The "Nizam" of Imam Shamil (the Constitution of Shamil of 1847) was adopted on 5 August 1917 by the "Central Committee of the Northern Caucasus". The republic was officially established on 11 May 1918, after the collapse of the Russian Tsarist empire in the Russian revolution of 1917, when the Government of the MRNC was established. The Mountainous Republic was de jure recognized by the Ottoman Empire, Germany, the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, the Democratic Republic of Georgia and the Kuban People's Republic. In June 1920, the MRNC was occupied by the Red Army of Bolshevik Russia and the Government of the republic was forced to leave the Caucasus. In January 1921, the Soviet Mountain Republic of the Russian SFSR was established. The Grozni oil-fields are situated on the northern slope of the Caucasian Mountains, and are connected with the Vladi-Caucas railway by the Baku line. Deep boring began there in 1903, as hand-dug wells. The important oil horizons lay very deep in this field, and Grozni oil was particularly suitable for the production of high-class benzine. The total of the drillings executed in 1913 were 203,000 feet: in 1914, 290,000 feet: in 1915, 181,930 feet: and in 1916, 158,307 feet. During the 1860s Russia saw many reforms, which resulted in a powerful impetus to its economic development, and by 1900 Russia's industrial output grew seven times, increasing demand for metal, coal and especially oil. In February 1872, Emperor Alexander II approved two fundamental documents: the Rules of Oil Production and the Exacting of Excise Duties from Photogen Production; and the Rules of Turning Over to Private Producers the State-Owned Sources of Oil Leased Out in the Caucasian and Transcaucasian Regions. Restrictive feudal lease systems were lifted and the oil business in Russia had obtained its long-awaited freedom. Prince Grigory Golitsyn, a chief representative of the Russian government in the Caucasus in 1897-1904, had no illusions about the poor technical know-how, business acumen or money accumulations of the local population. "It is still very difficult to do without foreign capital in the Caucasus," he remarked sorrowfully. Sergey Vitte, Finance Minister of the Russian Empire, was in full agreement. As a result, government resolutions were issued which greatly encouraged foreign capital to the Apsheron oil fields. Subsequently, in London numerous joint-stock companies were set up whose purpose was to operate the Caucasian oil fields. And, simultaneously, Russian and British banks took active interest in railway bonds in the Caucasus. . Very Good.
