        Bullets & Billets

Grant Richards, 1916. 1st edition. Hardcover. Original red pictorial cloth. Binding tight and square. Some small, moderate, occasional foxing on the pages and spotting to the blocks. All the plates and drawings intact. Signed by the author and inscribed to 'Mr A.J.Richardson' on the half-title page. Frontispiece of the author with original tissue guard. The rare dustjacket is almost complete, chipped at top right corner on the word 'France', with a small chip on the lower front edge and nibbled at the other extremities. Bruce Bairnsfather joined 1st Battalion the Royal Warwickshire Regiment in late 1914, went to France and was wounded at Ypres in April 1915 and shipped back to England. This book recounts his experiences of life in the trenches during that period, and is studded with many of the cartoons and drawings for which he became famous, including his best-known creation, Old Bill, with his trademark walrus moustache, who encapsulated the dogged weariness of the typical British soldier in World War One. Bairnsfather, arguably, did more for morale at the time than any of the more famous poets of the Great War. This particular copy of his autobiography is unique, on account of his signature and the extremely scarce dustjacket. Also included is an interesting article from the Sunday Times in which descendants of Lance-Corporal Thomas Rafferty claim that he was the model for Bairnsfather's 'Old Bill'.

Judex (Still photograph from the 1916 film)

Paris: Société des Etablissements L. Gaumont, 1916. Original double weight matte finish still photograph from the legendary 1916 silent film serial. With the Gaumont logo at the lower right corner. The last of Feuillade's three film serial masterpieces, preceded by "Fantômas" (1913) and "Les Vampires" (1915), combining elements of both its predecessors. In Judex (Latin for "judge"), Feuillade furthered his vision of the dark, enigmatic anti-hero he introduced with the legendary Fantômas character, and utilized Musidora--who played the lead character Irma Vep in "Les Vampires"--as the villainess. Judex was a step forward from the criminal Fantômas, however, predicting pulp heroes to come, such as The Shadow and especially Batman in the US: he was a masterful fighter, an expert in disguise, and kept his headquarters in the subterranean passages beneath a ruined castle, lavishly outfitted with high tech gadgets. Feuillade shot "Judex" in 1914, but the outbreak of World War I delayed release in France until 1916, and wide release until 1917. Pictured here is Judex, cunning and silent, in a stunt scene where in he attempts what we suspect will be successful entry into an unsuspecting criminal's car while the vehicle is in motion. 11 x 9 inches (22.5 x 28.5 cm). A few pinholes at the corners, else Near Fine. Hardy, The BFI Companion to Crime, p. 187-188.

Fantômas (Still photograph from the 1913 film serial)

Paris: Société des Etablissements L. Gaumont, 1916. Original double weight matte finish still photograph from the legendary 1913 silent film serial. Printed onto heavy card stock for use as the equivalent of a modern day lobby card. With the Gaumont logo at the lower right corner. The first of Feuillade's three film serial masterpieces, followed by "Les Vampires" (1915) and "Judex" (1916). Feuillade took the brave task of putting to film Fantômas, already wildly popular with European audiences. The character can be seen as an outgrowth of the "hero thief" character Arsene Lupin from turn-of-the-century French fiction. But unlike Lupin, Fantômas was completely comfortable killing those who got in his way, sadistically and with no small amount of enjoyment. The scene pictured here shows Jaques Dollon (André Luguetat) at the police station (sitting at the center), having been framed by Fantômas. The journalist Fandor (Georges Melchior), standing in for Inspector Juve (who is on the lam, in disguise as a hobo), stands over Dollon as a police inspector sits at a corner desk. Dollon goes on to escape, then captured by Fantômas, who murders him, cuts off his fingers, and throws his body into the river. Fantômas then sews the fingers into a glove and commits further crimes, continuing to implicate Dollon, who in addition to being innocent, is now dead. 11 x 9 inches. Mounted on brown card stock. Hardy, The BFI Companion to Crime, p. 125-126.

Photograph Collection Documenting the 13th Cavalry Regiment on the Mexican Border

Columbus, New Mexico, 1916. Photographs. Very Good. A collection of 10 photographs showing F Troop of the 13th Cavalry Regiment on the Mexican Border in the vicinity of Columbus, New Mexico sometime between 1912 and 1921. Photographs are backstamped, "Fox-Tone/Print/Fox Co./San Antonio, Tex." The 13th Cavalry was assigned to the Army's El Paso Border Patrol in 1912 and headquartered at Columbus, New Mexico. Its patrol area covered about 65 miles of the border between the towns of Noria in the east and Hermanas in the west. The regiment was truly a field unit, and no buildings were constructed for its use until late in 1914. F Troop was initially stationed at Culbertson's Ranch on the Mexican border, fifty miles south of Hachita, however by early 1916 it had relocated to Columbus to join with the Headquarters and six other regimental troops. On 9 March 1916, Pancho Villa launched a surprise raid on Columbus with a force of well over 500 horsemen in an attempt to steal money, supplies, horses, and arms for his revolutionary Army of the North. Although the Villistas were initially successful, the 13th Cavalry and armed townsfolk soon repulsed the Mexicans who retreated back across the border to what they presumed to be a safe haven. Unfortunately for the Villistas, two of the regiment's troops (as in company-size cavalry units and not individual soldiers) disregarded the standing rules of engagement and charged into Mexico in hot pursuit, caught the fleeing force after a chase of fifteen miles, and inflicted heavy casualties upon it. Within a week, General Pershing (who had been stationed at El Paso) organized an expeditionary force of 10,000 including the 13th Cavalry and launched an eleven-month campaign 350 miles deep into Mexico. Although Villa was not captured, Pershing's force destroyed the operational capability of his army and secured the border. Following the expedition, the 13th Cavalry returned to its garrison in Columbus. Five of these photographs show F Troop in various mounted formations. Two of the photographs show the troop's mules and supply wagon, and one photograph shows the troop engaged in mounted marksmanship training. The collection includes two additional Real Photo Postcards of I Troop of the 2nd Cavalry Regiment, which patrolled the border between El Paso and Presidio, Texas. A unique collection of scarce photographs showing early 20th century cavalry life on the Mexican border.

        Framewood Interiors

New York, NY: Wm. Baumgarten, 1916. This edition was privately printed for the Sterling Postley family to commemorate the completion of their Long Island estate. The limitation is unstated but likely did not exceed 100, to judge by the lack of auction records for the sale of this book and the paucity of copies at major libraries. Arranged and printed at the Goerck Art Press, New York, NY. Full vellum binding. To the front board a gilt-stamped armorial device to the center and four corner ornaments in an Art Nouveau style, with a crisp gilt rule surround. Gilt-stamped spine with title and date. The rear board with a crisp gilt rule surround. To the left of the armorial device a faint residue mark as if from the imprint of the rim of a moist glass. The vellum cracked a bit along the top and bottom of the front gutter, a minor cosmetic issue and not affecting the integrity of the binding. Virtually unbumbed spine head and tail, and with fairly sharp corners. The binding is in very good condition. The text block is firmly bound in. 14.5 x 10.5 inches. T.E.G. Fore- and bottom edges deckled to a handsome effect. Moiré silk-satin pastedowns and FEPs. Unnumbered pages, including blank preliminaries, a title page, two pages of text, and multiple pages of plates. With 26 full-page archival B&W photo-plates, including the interior rooms of the estate as well as a porch and a loggia. There is some minor page waviness. An exceptionally clean copy. Very gently read. A Very Good copy. Also included are miscellaneous documents and photographs apparently relating to Framewood:a large photogrpah by J. G. Maugans, Plainfield, NJ, slipped in shows an oak-paneled room at Framewood. Framewood was the Oyster Bay, Long Island estate of the Postley family. "The interior furnishings were designed in the fall of 1915, and executed during the following winter in the work-shops of Wm. Baumgarten & Co. of New York. The house was completed and ready for occupancy in the spring of 1916.". First Edition. Vellum. Very Good. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. Privately Printed.

Significant wear to covers (rubbing & chipping to edges of binding). Black leaves somewhat delicate, with light chipping to edges.. 23 black leaves in use, 27 leaves blank [50 unpaginated leaves]. 31 b/w images (some sepia-toned) of the MARIE under construction in 1916. Following, 19 b/w photographic images by Edwin Levick (with his name and NY stamped to bottom right corner of each photograph) of the SUNSHINE on the water and its impressive interior. Most images of the MARIE 5-1/2" x 3-1/4". Levick images 8" x 10". Oblong format: 10-1/2" x 13-3/4" Edwin Levick was a famous boating photographer, most well-known for his many images of years of America's World Cup races, operating prolificly from the 1910s to the 1940s. Though the first pictures in this book are not attributed to him, it is presumed he was the photographer. The first 31 images follow the construction of the powered boat MARIE, from a simple wooden outline of the hull to completion. The last 19 images are of the luxurious SUNSHINE, of it elegantly gliding on the water and its sumptuous interior rooms, from the kitchen to the staterooms and the lifeboat deck. Though no information was able to be found on the SUNSHINE, we can assume these pictures were taken sometime in the early 1920s.

During this period of his work, Dulac had immersed himself in the artistic traditions of folklore. He was partly stimulated by his friendship with Yeats (whose interest in Celtic folklore was legendary)" (Hughey). Several of the drawings show the influences of Dulac's tour of the eastern Mediterranean and his interest in Asian art. "By contrast, in the English fairy tale, The Friar and the Boy, a traditional technique is used, the eye being drawn inwards by the perspective of the flagstones, receding pillars, and roof beams. By careful use of clean bright colour, Dulac prevented his dancing figures from looking like cut-outs, and although the picture at first seems to be a return to an earlier style, a comparison with 'Madame s'est piqué le doigt' shows how much Dulac's work had altered in ten years" (White, p. 77).         'La Cagna' (the dugout). World War I signed lithograph

1916.. Very good condition. Powerful World War I lithograph signed in pencil by the artist (and likely captioned by him), depicting French soldiers jammed into a small wood framed dugout as bombs explode around them. Five faces can be seen at the entrance to the dugout, each a study in human reaction to war, as a rat scampers by. The location of this scene is the French village of Vauquois in the Meuse, where German and French forces held positions on either side of the village for an entire year, from October 1914 to October 1915. Each side dug miles of underground tunnels and planted tons of explosives. Mines planted underneath the German and French positions finally split the 290 meter hill in two, and the village was completely destroyed. Jean Veber (1864 - 1928) was a French artist and illustrator recognized for his caricatures, many of which appeared in L'Assiette Au Beurre and Le Rire. At the age of 50 he volunteered to serve in World War I, where he was gassed and discharged in 1918. References: Jean Veber : l'oeuvre lithographiée / Louis Lacroix ; Pierre Veber .- Paris : éditions Floury, 1931, cat. n° 197. The complete title as recorded by the Bibliotheque Nationale de France is ".... ! -..ça ne vas pas mieux -..ça ne desenfle pas! [la Cagna]". 18 x 11 1/2" tipped on to stiffer sheet. OCLC: 693297276 records only the Bibliotheque Nationale de France with a copy.

        Mountain Interval

New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1916 First edition, first state, with line 8 in duplicate on page 88 and "Come" for "Gone" on page 93 line 16. Inscribed by Frost on the title page with the entire poem "Dust of Snow" in holograph and signed "Robert Frost". Publisher's dark blue cloth, lettered and ruled in gilt. Near fine, with some minor rubbing to the spine ends, faint toning to the spine, former owner's 1917 inscription to the front free endpaper, small bookseller's plate to the rear pastedown, otherwise clean interior. A tight and attractive copy, inscribed with a holograph poem. Crane A4. Frost inscribed this copy of Mountain Interval with the poem "Dust of Snow," which was not published in book form until his 1923 collection New Hampshire. This poem was first published serially as "Mercy" in the London Mercury in December, 1920, and then as "Snow Dust" in the Yale Review in January, 1921. In this inscription, Frost titles the poem "Dust of Snow," indicating that he likely inscribed this copy of Mountain Interval after settling on the poem's final title. Mountain Interval is Frost's third published collection of poetry, and includes the poems "The Road Not Taken," "Christmas Trees," "In the Home Stretch," "Birches," "Snow," and "The Bonfire," among others. Throughout the volume, Frost grapples with how the choices of the past ultimately shape the future. The first and most famous poem of the collection, "The Road Not Taken," sets up this paradigm with the narrator's decision of which direction to take after reaching a fork in the road - a metaphor for decisions made along the road of life. While he had previously established his talent for verse with his first two poetry collections, Mountain Interval solidified Frost's status as a master poet.. Inscribed by Author. 1st Edition.. Hard Cover. Near Fine.

First edition. "The first half of the book, written by Phillips, is an informal nonfictional survey of the sub-genre of war- related tales of the supernatural, a topic that became popular with the runaway success of Arthur Machen's 'The Bowmen' in 1914, which readers took as reportage, latching onto it as moral-boosting proof that their combatants in the Great War were on the side of the angels. The second half of the present volume consists of five short stories by Hopkins, illustrative of this sub- genre. The introduction makes mention of Machen's story; WAR AND THE WEIRD is probably best taken in the spirit of a footnote to that story and its surrounding nimbus of mystical patriotism (or patriotic mysticism)." - Robert Eldridge. Reginald 07395. Not in Bleiler (1948; 1978). Pulpy text paper darkened, but not especially brittle, a fine copy of an uncommon, cheaply made wartime book in the rare pictorial dust jacket, very good with light wear at edges and general dust soiling, mostly to spine and rear panels.
