        "Zeppelin"

      Paris: [Mabileau & Co.], c. 1915. Hand-coloured pochoir print. Very good condition apart from some overall light soiling in the margins and the image. Small loss upper right edge. 13 1/2 x 31 1/4 inches. 17 3/4 x 35 inches. This LZ2 was built sometime between 1910 and 1914. Five airships of this design operated by Delag, safely carried 35,000 passengers between German cities. This was the first passenger air service in the world. The Gamy-Montaut prints document various historical events in the early history of motorized transportation, including Power Boat Racing, Motorcycle and Motor Car Racing, Motor Car Touring, Zeppelins and Airplanes.Having observed the rapidly growing interest in cars and racing during the early years of motor cars, Ernest Montaut produced his first motoring prints in the mid-1890s, and by 1897, his drawings were pictorial records of the many races in France. Montaut's work was extremely well received in the Paris of his day and was shown in the fashionable shops of the Rue de l'Opera and Rue de la Paix, as well as in the better galleries. Marguerite Montaut, Ernest's wife, joined him in his work producing not only racing prints but also developing a fine series of aviation prints commemorating such events as the first flights on the early European mail routes. While Marguerite Montaut's works were occasionally signed "M. Montaut", she also used the name "Gamy", an anagram for Magy.The Gamy-Montaut prints were all produced by the pochoir process in which the outlines for each image were drawn onto lithographic stones and printed. Using these uncoloured prints as a template, elaborate stencils were cut for each colour. Water-colour was then brushed onto the image through the stencil. The colouring process was quite complex, with each print taking several days to produce. It was also quite labour intensive, and the studio of Gamy-Montaut therefore employed a group of trained artists, including Nevil and Campion, to assist in the colouring.

        Boon, the Mind of the Race, the Wild Asses of the Devil and the Last Trump

      London: T. Fisher Unwin, 1915.. First Edition (First Impression). Cloth. Near Fine/Very Good. Very scarce in dust jacket. Green cloth, which I assume is the first issue as it is better quality than the red cloth issue, with gilt top edge. The book is clean and tight with a very slightly dulled spine. Top edge bumped with light wear to the tip of cloth. End papers slightly toned with offsetting. The jacket is mostly present with loss at spine ends and corners. The loss had been repaired on the inside at places by old tape but that has been replaced with with green archival paper. Some tears have also been repaired by archival paper. Some light scraping to the spine. Overall a decent, and scarce, early jacket in spite of the above flaws.Postage will be confirmed when you enquire or order and for light or very heavy books will vary from the ABE quote which is based on a 1kg parcel.

      London: Elkin Mathews, 1915.. First Edition. Paper Boards. Very Good. 20 photographic plates all present and in nice clean condition. Corners and spine ends are bumped and worn with webbing showing through at front edge of spine ends. Front board has some scrapes, marks and a glue residue at top, middle and base near spine but it is not too unsightly. Rear board clean. Spine a bit worn with publishers name a little indistinct at base. Internally hinges solid and all the pages and plates are clean. A pretty decent copy but not a sharp one which is not unsurprising given it's age and format. The prints and dedication are signed with the initials S. B., but the author/illustrator is unknown; the dedication page explains that an affectionate uncle created this book for his young relatives. On the cover, portraits of a boy and girl peek through cut-out circles. A charming and sophisticated children’s book. Very fine.

      Published in the 1915 book issued by Constable.,1915. ORIGINAL ARTWORK. The wonderful full page illustration appears on page 46 of the First Heath Robinson edition of Charles Kingsley's The Water Babies, Published by Constable & Company of London in 1915. The pen and ink drawing, signed by the artist, shows the old Dame, the teacher at the School in Vendale, seated with a dirty and exhausted Tom stood before her. Fine condition. The page measures 22.5 x 31 cms and is double mounted, framed, and glazed. The frame measures 67 x 55 cms and has the ink stamp of Heath Robinson's agent on the rear. A rubbed and worn copy of the 1915 First Edition is included in the price and will be sent with the drawing.:

        NORTH OF BOSTON with an AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED and a 14-line MANUSCRIPT FRAGMENT OF "BIRCHES" by Frost

      New York: Henry Holt, 1915. Third Edition. cloth. Near Fine in a Very Good dustwrapper. Tipped to the front pastedown is an @50 word AUTOGRAPH LETTER dated 12 May 1923 from South Shaftsbury, Vermont, SIGNED by the author, mentioning this book and how Frost would be happy to sign it if it is sent to his Ann Arbor address. On the first blank is a fourteen-line HOLOGRAPH FRAGMENT of Frost's famous poem "Birches," also SIGNED by the author with the dedication beneath his signature "To Maurice Frink," the same person to whom the letter is addressed. The fragment is the heart of the 59-line poem, first published in 1916 in MOUNTAIN INTERVAL, the book that followed NORTH OF BOSTON. It begins: "So was I once myself a swinger of birches" and concludes "I'd like to go by climbing a birch tree." An absolutely superb example of a holograph poem by Frost in a book, one of the best that we have encountered. The front free endpaper, which has Frink's 1915 markings along with a much later Christmas presentation in another hand, is detached and laid in, which allows the book, when opened, to have the letter facing the poem. Gilt bright, very minor rubbing to spine tips. The scarce dustwrapper has the correct spelling of "faint" on the front. Some mild chipping to the head of the spine just affecting "North" in the title and slightly extending to both panels.

The text by Rion (Ver Beck's wife) contains Mother Goose variations plus other stories or rhymes. Ver Beck was a noted American illustrator of his era who moved to England shortly before World War I. His work includes L. Frank Baum's New Wonderland, a Joel Chandler Harris Uncle Remus book, A Handbook of Golf for Bears plus many more. This is a nice copy and quite scarce!

      New York: Dodd, Mead and Company, 1915. First American Edition . Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. The boards and spine are square with good corners. The spine is rubbed at the top and bottom. The pages are all tight. The rear hinge is split, but still solid. The front hinge may have been repaired. The pages are all bright and clean. There is a large chip at the edge of page 269. On the title page someone has written "Served in the Boer war and the war against Germany. Received the DSC. Executed Nov 24, 1922 by the Irish Free State Gov't for being a leader of the Republican party." On the final page of the preface someone has written "The character of Davies is said to be that of Childers". Illustrated with black & white maps, one a large-fold out. The boards are covered with gray/green cloth with a few small faded spots. It has yellow titles on the spine and front. It has 836 pages.

      Folkestone, [England], may 15th, 1915. (LUSITANIA) 4to. Pen and ink on letterhead of Coman's Hotel, 21 & 23 Castle Hill Avenue, 12 pages, 15 lines per page (approx. 750 words). Old folds, large pinhole in top center margin. Old envelope of Lewis-Clark Hotel, Lewiston, Idaho, with "Allan Beatty's letter" in ink. Fine. Half morocco clamshell box . "I got an awful smash in the back from the water and was thrown about thirty feet on my face. I got up and ran down stairs people were pouring up from the decks below and I caught sight of Mother. I ran up to her and kissed her goodbye, then I lost her for a while - I though to myself I havent much of chance if I don't get a life belt so I thought a minute and then rushed down to my own stateroom and grabbed my own belt. - I had to hang on the side of my bed to get a hold of it. The lights were practically all out." Dramatic and detailed account by a survivor of the sinking of the Lusitania. Allan Beattie, 18, of Winnipeg, travelling Second Cabin with his mother Grace, was sitting on the hurricane deck when the ship was struck. He gave away the first life belt he found, then went down three decks to his stateroom to get his own life belt. Returning topside despite "a pretty hard time", he met his mother again. "She says, 'I am not nervous I dont think there is much danger do you?' I replied that 'It looked about as bad as it could' and I told her to take my life belt but she refused, I made her put it on after promising that I would get another. Allan was flung free, and was soon picked up by a life boat. He describes how the boat soon became perilously crowded. When another boat was located, survivors were shifted across. In due course his boat was rescued by the Flying Fish, and the survivors were brought to Queenstown. Beattie (whose first name is given as Allen in the New York Times list of survivors), writes his correspondent that "Mother is gone, and altho we have not heard of her I don't think that she can be alive." A remarkable, detailed narrative by a survivor of one of the most notorious maritime disasters of the twentieth century, written in the immediate aftermath of the event, by a young man whose actions show proof of calmness in the tumult. Beattie appears to have been one of the Lusitania survivors who was profoundly traumatized by the incident. He was rejected from military service because of poor eyesight and was reported to have suffered a series of breakdowns beginning in 1920, and was unable to hold steady employment

        POEMS (AND NEARLY) [and Untitled]. Two Presentation Portfolios of Manuscript and Typescript Poems

      [San Francisco, January 1915, and ca. 1936].. Two volumes. [40] leaves, and [42] leaves. Quarto, laid into two folding portfolios (approx. 29 x 22 cm), the earliest being watercolor decorated paper over cardboard, with old calf fore-tips to the upper board, the later cloth-backed boards, the upper board decorated in ink with a small rendition by Dixon of a thunderbird and a small monogram on the lower board. Some modest edgewear to portfolios, but generally very good or better. Two significant collections of Dixon's poetry in typescript, carbon typescript, and autograph manuscript, with occasional corrections, revisions and annotations, prepared personally by him for presentation. The earliest, which includes twenty-six poems, includes a manuscript title- leaf in his hand: "Poems, (and Nearly)," with a small ink rendering of a thunderbird, and is inscribed: "Franc from Maynard Jan - 1915." The title leaf is accompanied by a manuscript index of the included poems, also embellished with an ink drawing. All of the poems in this album are present in either carbon or original typescript, most bearing the approximate or exact dates and places of composition, the latter information occasionally revised or amplified in ink or pencil by Dixon. The earliest poem in this album dates from 1896, the latest from 1914. The second, later album includes no formal title, but opens with a leaf inscribed in pencil: "Betty - I don't believe you will like these - But here they are - it's you asking. M.D." It consists of thirty-five poems in typescript or carbon typescript (two - including the important poem "Jeffers" - with significant manuscript revisions, a couple more with minor manuscript tinkerings, and two signed at the end with initials in coarse pencil, with date and/or place), and three wholly in manuscript, in ink, in Dixon's bold hand. Two of the typescript poems in this album, "San Francisco" (1913) and "Nebula" (1914), appear in the earlier album, the first from a definitively different typing of the text. The latest poem in this album bears a 1936 date of composition. "Jeffers," which bears meaningful manuscript revisions, is undated in this draft, but is dated "ca. 1925" in its published form. All but one of the poems in these albums are printed in some form in the authoritative edition of Dixon's poetry, edited by his widow, Edith Hamlin (RIM-ROCK AND SAGE THE COLLECTED POEMS OF MAYNARD DIXON, California Historical Society, 1977), although occasionally under variant titles or with minor variations in their texts. One poem in the later album, entitled "Japs," is uncollected and may have been omitted by Hamlin due to its rather strident and painfully negative ethnic caricatures. Maynard Dixon (1875 - 1946) has long been regarded one of the most significant artists and illustrators of the American West and Southwest, but his parallel career as a poet is less widely known. Although a number of his poems appeared in the western periodical press, his sole lifetime book publication is the now elusive POEMS AND SEVEN DRAWINGS, privately printed by the Grabhorns in 1923. While his painting and drawing commissions claimed much of his attention during the remaining 23 years of his life, he continued to write poetry until at least as late as 1937, touching on many of the same themes as drove his drawings and paintings, both public and personal: the terrain, people (most particularly the native peoples) and history of the West, with a critical but not wholly unsympathetic eye toward certain tendencies of modernism, all coupled with a strain of physical consciousness occasionally bordering on the erotic. In his Preface to RIM-ROCK AND SAGE, J.S. Holiday denotes the 164 poems collected therein as "every known poem by the artist." The sixty-one poems preserved by Dixon in these two albums span virtually his entire career as a poet, representing over one third of that known output, and the collection adds one hitherto unpublished poem to that number.

As T. in 1919 became a member of the Socialist Academy (later cooperated in the USSR Academy of Science), recognition and money enabled him to publish a much larger quantity of articles and books than he had done before. Everything by T. published before 1918 was paid for by himself; his modest salary only allowed him to pay for few copies of each, and four times as many of his articles, booklets and books were published after 1918 as in all the years before; each one after 1918 was likewise issued in a much greater number. "During a period of 26 years before the revolution his publications numbered less than 50." (Collected Works, NASA, 1951, I; p. X). This together with the fact that his work was not recognized and his experiments discredited, means that probably very few copies were preserved. His early works are thus of the greatest rarity. He came up with a number of entirely new ideas concerning dirigible design. He set out to develop a dirigible that would be safe as well as fast, up until then the dirigibles in use were neither. He wanted to ensure a longer flight-time, and was certain this could not be attained with the fabric envelopes in use at the time, -they leaked gas, lost hight and couldn't stay aloft for long at a time. "His work is now a shining beacon in science, attracting the attention of the scientists and designers called upon to provide mankind with a reliable transport dirigible." (Collected Works, 1959, III: p. 26).The father of modern rocketry, Konstantin Eduardovich Tsiolkovski (1857-1935), is probably most widely known for his works on rocket propulsion, however his contributions to several fields of science have been immense and of exceedingly seminal character. Deafened at the age of nine and as a consequence thereof unable to go to school, he was forced to learn everything on his own hand. His father, a forester, was fond of scientific experiments, and though not wealthy, he had books on science and natural history. Tsiolkovski began by reading all books he could find on these subjects and as a consequence was able to construct quite complicated devices for measuring distances and many other things. Having seen how gifted his son was, his father sent him to Moscow, where Tsiolkovski spend all three years in libraries, receiving no teaching but his own, but still succeeding in taking a degree in physics from the university. T. can thus be seen as a purely self-taught man. After Moscow he settled in the small city of Borovskoye, where he taught physics at a school, spending all his spare time conducting experiments and writing about them. He devoted his intellect mainly to three scientific problems of the greatest importance at the time: The aeroplane, the (long-range) rocket and the all metal dirigible. Self-taught as he was and unable to come in touch with new publications in his fields of interest, he began with nothing and made all necessary calculations himself. Calculations and experiments were always at the base of his scientific works, and no conclusions were derived from intuition and guesswork. He was the first in the world to solve numerous problems concerning his three main interests, but unable to be recognized by the tsar-regime and considered, at best, a dreamer and a utopian, the struggle for his inventions was long and hard. Aged 24 he was the first in the world to formulate the possibility of applying the principle of reactive motion for flight in a vacuum, thus presenting a simple plan for a spaceship. He established the possibility of space travel by means of rockets, and is thus called the father of rocketry. He is also called the father of the all-metal dirigible. He is the first to propose and state that liquid fuel is necessary for spaceflight. He was the first in the world to make calculations for the air-jet and turbo-prop-planes, and it is in his works we find the most complete elaboration of the theory of rocket propulsion for many years to come. "In his works on rocket dynamics Tsiolkovsky, the first in the history of science, calculated the efficiency of the rocket and pointed out the advantages of rocket motors at high velocities." T. saw it as necessary step for mankind to explore and inhabit outer space and nothing could prevent him from working on the possibilities of this; in short, among many other things, we owe to him the fundamental principles of rocket dynamics.After the Revolution T. became a member of the Academy, was allotted a personal pension in 1921, and became able to devote himself entirely to his scientific work. (Collected Works, 1959, III: p. 17). With the invention of the all-metal dirigible T. has proved to be ahead of both contemporary scientists and inventors as well as of his time. "His work is now a shining beacon in science, attracting the attention of the scientists and designers called upon to provide mankind with a reliable transport dirigible." (Collected Works, 1959, III: p. 26).The father of modern rocketry, Konstantin Eduardovich Tsiolkovski (1857-1935), is probably most widely known for his works on rocket propulsion, however his contributions to several fields of science have been immense and of exceedingly seminal character. Deafened at the age of nine and as a consequence thereof unable to go to school, he was forced to learn everything on his own hand. His father, a forester, was fond of scientific experiments, and though not wealthy, he had books on science and natural history. Tsiolkovski began by reading all books he could find on these subjects and as a consequence was able to construct quite complicated devices for measuring distances and many other things. Having seen how gifted his son was, his father sent him to Moscow, where Tsiolkovski spend all three years in libraries, receiving no teaching but his own, but still succeeding in taking a degree in physics from the university. T. can thus be seen as a purely self-taught man. After Moscow he settled in the small city of Borovskoye, where he taught physics at a school, spending all his spare time conducting experiments and writing about them. He devoted his intellect mainly to three scientific problems of the greatest importance at the time: The aeroplane, the (long-range) rocket and the all metal dirigible. Self-taught as he was and unable to come in touch with new publications in his fields of interest, he began with nothing and made all necessary calculations himself. Calculations and experiments were always at the base of his scientific works, and no conclusions were derived from intuition and guesswork. He was the first in the world to solve numerous problems concerning his three main interests, but unable to be recognized by the tsar-regime and considered, at best, a dreamer and a utopian, the struggle for his inventions was long and hard. Aged 24 he was the first in the world to formulate the possibility of applying the principle of reactive motion for flight in a vacuum, thus presenting a simple plan for a spaceship. He established the possibility of space travel by means of rockets, and is thus called the father of rocketry. He is also called the father of the all-metal dirigible. He is the first to propose and state that liquid fuel is necessary for spaceflight. He was the first in the world to make calculations for the air-jet and turbo-prop-planes, and it is in his works we find the most complete elaboration of the theory of rocket propulsion for many years to come. "In his works on rocket dynamics Tsiolkovsky, the first in the history of science, calculated the efficiency of the rocket and pointed out the advantages of rocket motors at high velocities." (Kosmodemyansky, Moscow, 1956, p. 69). T. saw it as necessary step for mankind to explore and inhabit outer space and nothing could prevent him from working on the possibilities of this; in short, among many other things, we owe to him the fundamental principles of rocket dynamics.After the Revolution T. became a member of the Academy, was allotted a personal pension in 1921, and became able to devote himself entirely to his scientific work. Now his contemporaries finally saw him as the founder of a new domain of human knowledge, a new science, he was, and he was awarded the Red Banner of Labour Order for outstanding services to his country

Single gilt lines to boards. Binding signed in blind to inside of back board: Ander Kysters Efterf., gilding by Hagel Olsen. A very nice and clean copy. With the three leaves of advertisements at the end.. First edition of this masterpiece of modern fiction, Kafka's third published book, Metamorphosis, which was only preceded by Betrachtung and ''Der Heizer. Metamorphosis is by far the most famous of Kafka's works to appear within his life-time. If one thinks Kafka, one will automatically think Metamorphosis, the work with which his name is most closely linked. The work is groundbreaking, not only in Kafka-authorship, but also in the turn of consciousness of 20th century man. Never before had a work so forcefully and so directly described the alienation of man - from himself, from society, from family, from the state - an alienation that with the consciousness of it becomes defining for the 20th century. It is no wonder that Nabokov rated Metamorphosis second (after Joyce's Ulysses) in his list of the greatest prose works of the 20th century. On the Sunday morning of 24 November Kafka read the first part of Metamorphosis to his friends Oskar Baum and Max Brod. It was the last literary triumph of a highly productive year (though The Man Who Disappeared was still only partially written). Probably the most familiar of Kafka's stories to readers, its dramatic qualities have been recognized by such actors and playwrights as Steven Berkoff, who memorably put Gregor Samsa on the London stage in 1969 at the Roundhouse and again at the National Theatre in 1976, with later revivals around the world. As Berkoff put it: What is so haunting about Kafka's vision is that it is the vision of the condemned man who views every fragment of of his universe with unconcealed intensity, even if the mood is sometimes cool and austere. [...] The senses of horror, self-disgust, anguish and claustrophobia are vividly and dramatically present. And they are Kafka's emotions at this time. (Murray, Kafka, pp. 140-41)

      First edition, journal issue. Among the experimental results predicted by Einstein's 1915 theory of general relativity was the bending of light by massive bodies due to the curvature of space-time in their vicinity. To test this prediction, the astronomers Eddington and Dyson organized two expeditions-one to Principe Island off West Africa, and the other to Sobral in Brazil-for the purpose of observing the May 1919 solar eclipse; the sun served as the 'massive body,' and an eclipse was necessary in order to observe the light coming from other stars. "The results were in agreement with Einstein's prediction, the Sobral result being 1.98 ± 0.12 arcsec and the Principe result 1.61 ± 0.3 arcsec [about twice the amounts predicted by Newtonian theory]." (Twentieth Century Physics III, pp. 1722-23). It was upon the publication of these results in November, 1919, that Einstein became world famous. Pais, Subtle is the Lord, (p. 309) points out that the New York Times Index contains no mention of Einstein until November of 1919. From that date until his death, Einstein's name appeared in that newspaper each year, usually many times.. Large 4to (290 x 226 mm).
