Erste eigene Ausstellung in Zürich.

The Extra Day; Association Copy [Elizabeth Belloc's notated Copy, with Laid in signed Postcard from Algernon Blackwood to Belloc]

London: MacMillan & Co., 1915. London: MacMillan & Co., 1915 London: MacMillan & Co., 1915. First Edition, second state with 2 pages of ads. Laid in postcard from Blackwood to Elizabeth Belloc (daughter of Hilaire Belloc), signed by Blackwood. Association copy, that of Elizabeth Belloc, with her signature and annotations in pencil. Octavo, 358 pp. + ads. Blue cloth, decoratively blindstamped, gilt imprinting. Spine dulled but readable, some page edge soiling, substantially better than Very Good. A remarkably collectible copy of the first edition of seminal fantasy and horror author Algernon Blackwoods's The Extra Day, a tale involving time displacement and three young children. This unique copy belonged to Elizabeth Belloc, daughter of author Hilaire Belloc, and is signed in pencil by her on the flyleaf and dated April 27th, 1921. She has also penciled in a lengthy inscription in Latin on the rear free endpaper, with the cryptic comment, "[fa?]the way to Oxford, - April '21". Equally memorable is the laid-in postcard from Blackwood to Elizabeth Belloc, posted from Sannenmoseh (sic), Switzerland, in which he warmly speaks of a snowbound winter and notes that he's en route to Egypt. Blackwood, author of the such timeless horror stories as The Wendigo and The Willows, strongly influenced later genre greats such as H.P. Lovecraft, who said of Blackwood: "... Of the quality of Mr. Blackwood's genius there can be no dispute; for no one has even approached the skill, seriousness, and minute fidelity with which he records the overtones of strangeness in ordinary things and experiences, or the preternatural insight with which he builds up detail by detail the complete sensations and perceptions leading from reality into supernormal life or vision." Unique in this form. L-41n

4 (3 autogr. and 1 typed) letters signed.

Mostly London, 1887 to 1915. - Small 4to and 8vo. Altogether 10¼ pp. To various addressees, on appointments and non-appointments: "It is with sincere and keen regret that I find myself unexpectedly disabled by the call of public duty from being present with you this evening. I had looked forward to the opportunity of hearing what Lord Haldane had to say on the subject of our National duty in these critical times, and of paying such tribute as I could to the signal service he has rendered, and the splendid example he has set, to the Empire. As I cannot be with you, I should be glad if you would convey my message to your meeting. Lord Haldane is the oldest personal and political friend that I have in the world. For the best part of 35 years we have been associated in close and unbroken intimacy. We have worked together, and fought side by side, through many vicissitudes of fortune, in the pursuit of what we have believed to be great and worthy causes, without (so far as I can recall) more than a passing shadow of difference in opinion, and always with the same ideals in view [.]" (from the letter of July 5, 1915; to Mr. Lincolnshire).

WORLD WAR ONE - ORIGINAL AUTOGRAPH AND JOTTINGS BOOK FROM STEPPING HILL MILITARY HOSPITAL (WWI)

Stepping Hill, 1915. A unique WW1 item, with c. 50 contributions from patients (all soldiers injured in the great war) at Stepping Hill Military Hospital principally dating to the period 1915-1917. From the entries it is clear that the book belonged to Nurse Hicks - and as the book is inscribed To Mary (Dec. 24/06) we can surmise that it is Nurse "Mary Hicks". The entries from the wounded soldiers vary from a few lines of doggerel to a several pages of poetry or prose, some quote poems and songs of the time and others are original compositions. Some include person accounts of the war and their injuries. A few are accompanied by illustrations generally of a cartoon nature (see images) Most of the entries are dated and signed with regimental details. Entries include "How I was Wounded at Loos", "The Battle of Hooge Flanders 9th of August 1915 by one that was Their (sic)" , "Salonika", "From one of the Boys Military Hospital Stepping Hill Hazel Grove" "Private A. H. Lange Welling B. Company New Zealand Expeditionary Force", "An Account of the landing at the Dardanelles " There are also a few entries which are pre 1914. A few loose pages, but generally in very good condition. A unique and somewhat poignant item.. Hard Cover. Very Good. 8vo.
