Maugham visited America in the early part of 1939: the day before this copy was inscribed, he and his lover Gerald Haxton, a native of San Francisco, had lunch with the American playwright Eugene O'Neill at his home, Tao House, in California, not far from San Francisco.

        The Trojan Women.

Philadelphia: Oxford University Press,, October 1915. Translated into English Rhyming Verse. Duodecimo (151 x 129 mm). 112-page manuscript on rectos only, black ink in a neat calligraphic hand, rubrication in red, capitals in various colours, 20 initials attractively illuminated in colour and gilt. Bound for presentation in contemporary blue morocco, spine gilt in compartments with titles direct, gilt ruled border to sides, gilt-rolled board edges and turn-ins, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Spine sunned, excellent condition. Author's own copy, a unique illuminated manuscript copy of Murray's verse translation of Euripides's Troiades, prepared by the Oxford University Press (US branch) printer James H. W. Althouse, specially bound, and presented to Murray himself, with his illustrated bookplate on the first blank. Gilbert Murray (1866-1957) was the pre-eminent public authority of Ancient Greek drama in the period, whose English translations of Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides, and Aristophanes were hugely influential in popularising the literature in the early 20th century. Murray's dramatisation of the Troiades had been published and performed in the UK some 10 years previously, but this manuscript was produced in tandem with the edition issued in 1915 by the US branch of the Oxford University Press, notably (for this tragedy of those bereft by war) during the early years of the First World War. In May 1915 performances of Murray's Trojan Women and Iphigenia in Tauris were taken to various American colleges by Harley Granville-Barker and his wife Lillah McCarthy. These timely productions helped to shape the interpretation, still strong today, of Euripides's Troiades as the most powerful piece of anti-war work in ancient literature. Francis H. Stoddard in his introduction to the OUP's published version noted: "Never surely can a great tragedy seem more real to us, or purge our souls more truly of the unreality of our thoughts and feelings concerning vital issues, then can The Trojan Women at this moment in the history of the world." The copy has two later Christmas cards signed to Murray from Althouse laid in.

        Die Verwandlung [Metamorphosis].

Leipzig: Kurt Wolff Verlag,, 1915. Octavo. Original quarter imitation vellum-backed dark blue laid paper boards, spine and front board lettered in black, blue top edge. With the 5 page advertisements to the rear. Pencil inscription to front free endpaper. Extremities lightly rubbed, minor tear to pages 5–6 professionally repaired, and the occasional spot, otherwise a bright, clean copy. First edition, first printing, the uncommon case-bound issue, the state with serif type on the spine and front board (no priority assigned). The publication of this work – the first of Kafka's masterpieces and unquestionably one of the most influential works of fiction produced in the 20th century – was a rather confused affair. Two basic issues were intended: one in wrappers, the other bound in boards. Sales seem not to have been good and after a year or so the numerous copies remaining unsold were stamped on the title pages with the official stamp of the German censors. This copy has no stamp to the title page which suggests it is an early issue.

        The Rainbow.

London: Methuen & Co. Ltd., 1915 - Octavo. Original green cloth, titles to spine gilt and to upper board in blind. With the dust jacket. In a green cloth solander case. Minor bump at the top of the spine but a sparkling copy in the pictorial dust jacket with some small loss at the ends of the spine panel, two tips and with a little chip at the top edge of the front panel. First edition, first impression. Methuen published The Rainbow in September 1915, but quickly withdrew it from sale in the face of almost universally hostile reviews and impending prosecution. At Bow Street magistrates' court on 13 November it was banned as obscene, with the result that half of the print run was destroyed. This is one of a handful of extant copies in the dust jacket. Methuen's adoption of this groundbreaking style of jacket design began right at the time this book was in production, it closely resembles Conrad's Victory and a number of the other titles in the series advertised on the flaps and rear panel of this dust jacket. The innovation of having special designs made for the dust jacket which were neither taken from an image in the book itself, nor simply the printing on paper of the binding brasses made for the cloth, but rather a unique addition to the whole of the book itself seem commonplace now but were revolutionary at the time. English book design changed that year and, notwithstanding the destruction of half its edition, the dust jacket on The Rainbow was a part of that change. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Of Human Bondage. A Novel.

New York: George H. Doran, 1915 - Octavo. Original green cloth, title to spine and front cover in black. Slightly rolled, spine very slightly faded, hinges cracked but holding. A very good copy. First US edition, second issue with the misprint "help" corrected on page 257. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper: "For John Hobart, W. Somerset Maugham. San Francisco. 4 Feb 1939". It is likely that the recipient was John Hobart, the drama critic for the San Francisco Chronicle at the time. Maugham visited America in the early part of 1939: the day before this copy was inscribed, he and his lover Gerald Haxton, a native of San Francisco, had lunch with the American playwright Eugene O'Neill at his home, Tao House, in California, not far from San Francisco. Rothschild Maugham Collection 85; Stott A21b; Kelly, Eugene O'Neill National Historic Site: General Management Plan, 1979.

        A Christmas Carol

London: William Heinemann; J. B. Lippincott Co., Philadelphia, , 1915. Octavo (192 x 141 mm). Finely bound for Asprey in twentieth century morocco, titles and centre tool to spines gilt in compartments, raised bands, pictorial onlay of Scrooge to both boards within gilt fillets, inner dentelles gilt, decorative endpapers, gilt edges. Colour frontispiece and 11 colour plates all printed directly on plate paper with captioned tissue guards and black and white illustrations in the text. Very faint contemporary inscription to half-title, minor wear to gutter at verso of the half-title, an excellent copy. First trade edition. The exact status of this impression is unclear. The bibliographies state that the first impression of the trade edition has the frontispiece mounted on dark green paper and the date 1915 on the title verso. This copy has the frontispiece printed directly on plate paper, supposedly one sign of later issue, yet with the date 1915 on the title verso. However we recently sold a presentation copy inscribed by Rackham dated 1915 with the frontispiece printed directly on plate paper, as here, which suggests that this is an early issue.
