YOUNG, Filson.
London: Martin Secker, 1914. Small octavo. Original green paper-backed decorated paper boards, title to spine in gilt, top edge gilt, others uncut. Spine cracked but holding, spine ends and tips slightly worn. A very good copy. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author to his old associate Max Beerbohm, while on service with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve in the First World War, "Max from Filson. H.M.S. Lion, North Sea, 5 Jan 1915", together with an original pen-and-ink and watercolour caricature of the author by Beerbohm drawn on the half-title. Alexander Bell Filson Young (1876-1938) was a journalist who survived the sinking of the Titanic, and published the first book about the disaster just 37 days after the sinking. A bromide print by him of Max Beerbohm is held by the National Portrait Gallery, London. Laid-in are an autograph card from Eva G. Reichmann to Anthony Hobson, enclosing the book as a gift; " Given to me by Mrs Reichmann (sister of the second Lady Beerbohm and Administratrix of the estates of Sir Max and Lady Beerbohm), 21 Dec. 1960", and an autograph note by Hobson noting the provenance. With Hobson's bookplate also to the front pastedown; Hobson (1921-2014) was the director of Sotheby's and a noted bibliophile. The portrait is based closely on that executed by Max in 1913 and published in A Survey (1921), differing primarily in expression and the treatment of the hair. Young had given Beerbohm's A Christmas Garland (1912) a warm but astute notice in The Saturday Review. Decidedly uncommon: Copac cites copies at just fi … [Click Below for Full Description]

CHARDONNE (Jacques).
Si on me demandait: quelle poque auriez-vous dsir vivre? Je rpondrais: mainten … [Click Below for Full Description]

Woodrow Wilson
Letter of State Standing Up For American Rights During World War I, Drafted and Typed Out by President Wilson. Text, notes and edits demonstrate America’s foreign policy architect at work. With the outbreak of World War I in August 1914, the first response of the American people and government was to remain neutral. The goal of neutrality continued until 1917, and the aim of American foreign policy was to remain out of the war and maintain the political and commercial rights of a neutral in the face of opposition from the belligerents. Britain, from the first day of the war, used its powerful navy to establish a blockade of Germany, and the Germans in turn tried to counter-blockade Britain by using U-Boats to sink shipping bound there. By the start of 1915, it was clear that the war would in part be a battle of commerce, with neutrals trying to trade with both sides caught squarely in the middle. The U.S. had a long history of merchant shipping issues with the British going back to before the War of 1812, and these now resurfaced. On February 4, 1915, Germany issued a War Zone Decree warning that the waters around Great Britain would be a danger zone for neutral shipping. In response, the U.S. government stated that Germany would be held strictly accountable if a German commander destroyed an American vessel and cost the lives of American citizens on the high seas. Being even-handed, the U.S. also made representations to Britain against using its flag improperly. Neither belligerent’s reply was responsive, with Germany’s stating on February 16 that both mines and … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Rilke, Rainer Maria, translator.] Gide, André
Leipzig: Insel-verlag, [1914]. First edition thus. 38, [2], [2 ad] pp. Small 8vo. Inscribed by Rilke. First edition of Rilke's translation, INSCRIBED on the leaf preceding the title: "Herrn und Frau Kammergerichtsrath Schück. / ergebenst / bei der freundlichen Begegnung / in Irschenhausen. / (Sommer 1914) / Rainer Maria Rilke" [To Mr and Mrs Judge Schück, respectfully, at our friendly encounter, in Irschenhausen (Summer 1914)]. Rilke spent the end of summer and early fall of 1914 in Irschenhausen, a spa town near Munich, while recovering from a minor lesion on his lung. It was on this visit that he commenced his two-year affair with the painter Lou Albert-Lasard. The inscribee Dr. Richard Schück sat on the Kammergerichts, the highest state court in Berlin. The gift inscription below Rilke's inscription is evidently from the judge and his wife. Rilke's new German translation of Gide's short story "Le retour de l'enfant prodigue," published as number 143 in the popular "Insel-Bücherei" series, introduced Gide to a wider German audience. Rilke had concluded "Malte Laurids Brigge" with his own recasting of the parable of the prodigal son, perhaps inspired by Gide's story, which he first encountered in Kurt Singer's translation in Neue Rundschau in May 1907 (see "A Companion to the Works of Rilke" p 182). Gide's translation of sections of Rilke's "Malte Laurids Brigge" appeared in La Nouvelle Revue Francaise in 1911. Rilke had admired Gide from a distance for some time before becoming personally acquainted with him through mutual friends in 1910, after which the two maintained a … [Click Below for Full Description]
