Ty Cobb
New York: Edward J. Clode, 1914. First edition. Hardcover. Fine. First edition. Hardcover in tan cloth lettered in dark brown. 282 pp. Illustrated with humorous drawings. A tight, generally fine example, just a touch of wear at the spine extremities and a tiny tear to the cloth at the head of the spine. Internally clean and bright. Lacking the extremely rare dust jacket. One of the rarest and most sought after baseball books, an autobiographical account of one of the games immortals, Ty Cobb. Much in the same vein as Christy Mathewson's "Pitching In A Pinch" published two years earlier, Cobb recounts tales from his own career as well as stories from around the major leagues of the first decade of the 20th century. A rare book in any condiiton, this is the finmest copy we have encountered outside of a couple in private collections.

GROSS Valentine
[Click Below for Full Description]

Albert Besombes (Paris)
Paris, Librairie Albert Besombes, 1914. (25 cm), viii, 190 pp., 20 plates. Lots 1-614 (books), 1-68 (prints and drawings). "Liste des prix d'adjudication" bound in. Morocco-backed boards, a collector's binding (original wrappers bound in). - This remarkable collection had been sold privately in 1911 to J.P. Morgan (1837-1913), for 750,000 FF; upon its arrival in New York, however, it was judged by his son, John Pierpont "Jack" Morgan, Jr., and by his librarian, Belle da Costa Greene, to be unsatisfactory. The collection was returned to Paris to be sold as the Foulc collection, not in any way as part of Morgan's library. The prices realised were exceptional, and mark the apogee for books of ornament: ever since, this type of book has languished on the market. The sculpture and other works of art collected by Foulc - some 200 objects, "the most outstanding group of works of the later Middle Ages and the Renaissance anywhere available today" - was bought en bloc for more than one million dollars by the Pennsylvania (now Philadelphia) Museum of Art (quotation from Fiske Kimball, "The Edmond Foulc Collection" in Bulletin of the Pennsylvania Museum, volume 25, February 1930, pp.4-11). ¶ Superb copy.

CARUSO, Enrico 1873-1921
- Image from the Mishkin Studio in New York, with their embossed copyright stamp to lower left corner. 201 x 139 mm.Very slightly worn; minor cockling to upper and lower edges; laid down to mounting sheet at corners of verso. "The winning quality of the sound, the tender mezza voce (particularly in the early years), and his phrasing, based on a rare mastery of legato and portamento, enabled Caruso to sing the French and Italian lyric repertory as well as lighter operas. In addition, his noble, incisive declamation, his broad, generous phrasing, and his vigor in dramatic outbursts made him a notable interpreter of Verdi as well as of French grand opéra. In this repertory his performances were characterized by the irresistible erotic appeal of his timbre allied to a temperament as warm and vehement as his voice. His numerous recordings, now faithfully remastered on CD, not only made him universally famous, they also did much to encourage the acceptance of recording as a medium for opera." Rodolfo Celletti and Alan Blyth in Grove Music Online.Caruso opened the Met's 1914/15 season on November 16 as Riccardo in Un ballo in maschera; the performance was conducted by Toscanini in what was his final first night at the Met. He went on to sing in Carmen, La Gioconda, Pagliacci, Aida, Manon, and Gli Ugonotti with the Met that year. Herman Mishkin (1871-1948) served as the Met's official portraitist from 1908-1932. "[He] was the foremost portrayer of Golden Era opera singers. He began shooting CDVs and cabinet portraits of performers in costume in the 1890s and closed his career in th … [Click Below for Full Description]

LAWRENCE, T. E.]
London: Harrison & Sons, 1914 - Large sextodecimo (190 ×124 mm). Original buff card wrappers, lettered in black to front. Spine chipped at extremities, wrappers spotted, "59" inscribed to front wrapper in blue pencil, contents clean: an excellent copy of a fragile publication. Folding 2-colour map to end-pocket. First edition of Lawrence's first sole-authored book, one of the black tulips in his canon, with no copies in auction records, two in British and Irish institutional libraries (Durham and the Ministry of Defence Library), and four in libraries world-wide (the Huntington and three libraries in Australia); the British Library has two copies of the map and another copy of a 1916 reprint. Marked "for official use only", a number in the imprint slug suggests that 1,700 copies were printed, but judging from the rate of survival it is likely that the majority of run was never issued and subsequently pulped, probably because until 1916 the Egyptian Expeditionary Force was occupied with defending the Suez Canal from irregular Ottoman and German raids (and often simply the threat thereof); it was only with the appointment of Lieutenant-General Archibald Murray as EEF commander-in-chief that it was decided that "going on the offensive and seizing control of the Sinai Peninsula from the Ottoman Turks" would be the best strategy of securing the canal ("Sinai Campaign", New Zealand History, online). A pencilled number to the front wrapper of this copy indicates that it was copy number 59. From January to February 1914 Lawrence was with Leonard Woolley in the Negev, conducting a c … [Click Below for Full Description]

SETT, Mera K.) OMAR KHAYYAM.
Cambridge: Galloway & Porter, 1914 - Large octavo. Original black cloth, titles and decoration gilt to spine and front cover, top edge gilt. Slight rubbing to the ends and corners, endpapers toned but the rest sound and clean, an excellent copy. Illustrated title, 15 plates with text and illustration, 15 plates with illustration and captioned tissue guards. First Sett edition, one of 250 copies printed, of this scarce privately printed Rubaiyat illustrated by Parsee artist Mera Ben Kavas Sett. In his lengthy foreword Sett stakes his claim that his Rubaiyat "is original in being the interpretation of a Persian (Parsee)", and also notes that "Some of the English publishers found the work "too shocking" and "one likely to hurt the susceptibility of the decent-minded English people". They were ready to bring out my Omar if I changed a few pictures at their dictate and tastes, but I would not so much as a single line or a dot. It seems the English (according to the publishers) would rather have the conventional fig-leaf than a cluster of roses. I stated my case to my generous father. With his usual kindness and generosity, he offered to stand the piper to the tune of a private publication." Sett's Omar made sufficient impression to receive the encomium of Rupert Brooke (who died early in 1915): "If Mr Sett has not been universally acclaimed as the greatest draughtsman and decorator living, the fault lies with his own exclusive and publicity shunning nature. His Omar will have the pride of place in my library". [Attributes: First Edition]

NIELSEN, Kay.)
London: Hodder & Stoughton, [1914] - Quarto. Original vellum, titles and decoration to spine and front cover gilt, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, gilt and black pictorial endpapers, renewed yellow ties. Housed in a custom blue straight-grain morocco-backed solander box by Zaehnsdorf. Boards very slightly bowed, an excellent, bright copy. Original pen and ink drawing by Nielsen, depicting a prince wearing the artist's characteristic incredibly detailed armour, stood atop a hill and above three trolls, and against a background formed of the titular sun and moon, an illustration which encapsulates some of the key motifs from this collection of Norse tales. Illustrated title page, tipped-in colour frontispiece, 24 colour plates, all with captioned tissue-guards, black and white illustrations to text. Signed limited edition, one of 500 copies, this copy unnumbered. With an original pen and ink drawing by Nielsen on the reverse of the limitation page, initialled in pencil. The richness of the Danish Nielsen's colour images for this lavish illustrated book of Norse pagan mythology was achieved by a four-colour process, in contrast to many of the illustrations prepared by his contemporaries, such as Rackham and Dulac, which characteristically utilised a traditional three-colour process. Extremely rare with an original drawing: we have neither seen or heard of another copy and no other copies traced at auction. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

[Click Below for Full Description]

DOBBERTIN, Walther.
East Africa: 1914-6 - Landscape quarto album (240 × 320 mm). Original dark tan half morocco-grained skiver on green linen boards, blind-tooled bands on the spine, foliate roll in gilt to the spine and corner edges, attractively patterned endpapers, grey with repeated interlinked spiral pattern in gold and aqua. Album just a little rubbed at the extremities, the contents clean and sound, just a little marginal oxidation or fade to a few of the images, but on the whole clean and with good depth and detail, a very nicely preserved collection. 108 original photographs mounted on 30 linen stub mounted grey card leaves, the majority with pencilled captions, on or beneath the image: the prints in three "formats"; 50 "quarter plate" at c.80 × 111 mm; 38 "half- plate", c.123 × 176 mm; 20 "full plate" c.165 × 225 mm. Remarkable collection of highly interesting, high quality images from the war in German East, almost certainly the work of Walther Dobbertin, the only professional photographer working in the region. Only one of the images collected here appears to feature in the Dobbertin Collection at the Bundesarchiv, but the others clearly would seem, through opportunity and ability, to be his work, with the great majority of even the smaller format photographs being very well composed. The album opens with images of mustering and entraining at Moshi in preparation for the Battle of Tanga, followed by a sequence showing British shipping including Pegasus entering the harbour, and the the aftermath of the battle, shell-damage to the Hotel Kaiserhof, Lettow-Vorbeck's HQ, corpses on the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Berlin : H. Itzkowski, 1914. 1st German Edition of a work by Ibn Taymiyyah. 8vo. 60, [xxxi] pages. Inscribed to Hoffman by the author (Wiesel) on the title page. In German and Arabic. Title translates into English as, "The Book of Religious Word. Islamic Prayer. The First 18 Chapters. " This is the first translation of Ibn Tyamiyyah into German. Includes the original Arabic and an introduction in German by Heinrich Wiesel. "Taqi ad-Din Ahmad ibn Taymiyyah known as Ibn Taymiyyah (1263 – 1328) was a Islamic scholar, theologian and logician. He lived during the troubled times of the Mongol invasions, much of the time in Damascus. He was a member of the school founded by Ahmad ibn Hanbal and is considered by his followers, along with Ibn Qudamah, as one of the two most significant proponents of Hanbalism. In the modern era, his adherents often refer to the two as ‘the two sheikhs’ and Ibn Taymiyyah in particular as ‘Sheikh ul-Islam. ’ (He) sought the return of Sunni Islam to what he viewed as earlier interpretations of the Qur'an and the Sunnah, and is considered to have had considerable influence in contemporary Wahhabism, Salafism, and Jihadism. He is renowned for his fatwa issued against the Mongol rulers declaring jihad by Muslims against them compulsory, on the grounds that they did not follow Sharia and as such were not Muslim His teachings had a profound influence on Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab, and other later Wahabi scholars. Paris: Bernard Grasset, éditeur/Librairie Gallimard, Éditions de la Nouvelle Revue Française, 1914–27. 7 works bound in 13 volumes, octavo. Vol. I in original yellow wrappers printed in black, with the 8-page publisher's catalogue to the rear; others in original cream wrappers printed in red and black. All in glassine wrappers except for vol. IV. Housed in purple cloth-backed boxes, paper labels to spines printed in purple. Spine ends lightly bumped and a few small nicks to spine ends of glassine wrappers, some light rubbing to wrappers extremities and box edges, overall an excellent set. Modern bookplate to front free endpaper of vol. I, bookseller's repricing ticket to the spine of vol. II as usual, 4-page errata slip laid-in to vol. III. First editions throughout of Proust's massive roman-fleuve which has been judged by many to be the major novel of the 20th century. Proust at first could not find a publisher willing to take a chance on such a substantial work and so published the first volume at his own expense with Grasset. That first volume, Du côté de chez Swann, is the first printing, first issue with all requisite points as described by Brun: the wrappers bear the date 1913; the title page is dated 1914 and has the intrusive printer's slug between the E and the T in the imprint; and the text has all the correct and incorrect pagination as noted in Max Brun's bibliography. Gallimard's Nouvelle Revue Française, which had rejected the book on the basis of a hasty reading by André Gide, swiftly realised the error and came to an agreement with Proust to publish the rest … [Click Below for Full Description]

London: T. Fisher Unwin, 1914 - Octavo. Original blue cloth with title and pictorial vignettes in silver to spine and front board, top edge gilt, the others uncut. Silver oxidised as usual, free endpapers browned, some foxing, prize bookplate for The Thomas Morgan Memorial Essay Prize for 1916 to the front pastedown, but remains a very good copy. Frontispiece and 97 other plates, three folding maps. First edition, first impression. Priestley served with Shackleton on his 1907-09 expedition, contributing the geological sections to The Heart of the Antarctic, and returning with Scott to Antarctica as a geologist in 1910-13. "He joined the northern party under Victor Campbell. After spending 1911 at Cape Adare the six-man party was landed 200 miles further south for summer fieldwork with provisions for eight weeks. The ship was stopped by pack-ice from returning and the epic story of how the party survived and then sledged 250 miles to the main party early in the following summer is told [in the present work]. They survived the fierce winds by digging a cave in a snowdrift. A line across the middle of the 12 foot by 9 foot floor separated the wardroom from the mess deck of three petty officers. By agreement, nothing said on one side of the line could be 'heard' or answered by those on the other side. Priestley considered this splendid training for dealing with unreasonable, irascible professors in later life without loss of temper. His responsibility for the commissariat in the ice cave in these circumstances shows an early reputation for fairness and reliability" (ODNB). Prie … [Click Below for Full Description]
