BRITISH ARMY
HMSO, 1914. Sm. 8vo., First Edition, with 8 folding plates (6 coloured or coloured in outline), 13 plates in monochrome and numerous woodcut illustrations (a number full-page) in the text; original wrappers, red sprinkled edges, a very good, bright clean copy IN THE ORIGINAL BROWN CLOTH CASE. With the 24pp (23 printed) catalogue of military books on pink stock. With small trade stamp on front free endpaper and previous owner's initial inked on top edge. The scarce cloth case lettered in black is particularly well-preserved. The Field Service Pocket Book (B11013) was the 'bible' for officers on active service in the Great War. A remarkably concise yet comprehensive reference, it is rarely found in this condition. A RARE SURVIVAL.

Schiele, Egon. (1890-1918)
Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Autograph letter from the important Austrian painter known for his intense, expressionist and often controversial works, to a Dr. Scheu (apparently the lawyer Dr. Jakob Scheu), regarding the repayment of a debt. May 7, 1914. Translated from the German, in part: "Dear Dr. Scheu, it is quite impossible at the moment for me to pay the whole debt of 247K for Mr. Holub; however, the week after next I will be able to pay a part, and I hope in the course of this month the rest. Best wishes, Egon Schiele." 1 p. of a bifolium on orange paper. Light creases; overall in fine condition. 6 x 8 inches (15.1 x 20.2 cm). Unpublished, not in Nebehay. <br style=""><br style="">1914 found Schiele enjoying success for the first time outside of Austria-Hungary, exhibiting in Rome, Brussels, and Paris, and beginning to learn the art of engraving from Robert Philippi and with the support of Arthur Roessler. Platten, J[ohn] R[ussell]
1914. 4to.16 leaves, ruled, pencil manuscript in legible cursive hand on rectos only. Bound in blue paper wrappers with marbled spine [light wear], paper label affixed to front cover. On each of the last three leaves, a bottom tear costs 4-8 lines of text. Good+. This is a first hand-account of the Siege of Antwerp written by John Russell Platten of the Collingwood Battalion. The Battalion was named after Lord Cuthbert Collingwood, Vice Admiral, and composed primarily of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. The Diary's abrupt change of tone, from pre-combat innocence to the horrors of war, is striking. The Battalion left Dover on Sunday, October 4, 1914, and landed at Dunkirk. They were sent to relieve the Belgians at Whybreck. On October 5th the Collingwood men occupied trenches beyond Antwerp. Bombarded for three days, they remained under fire through the night of October 8, with part of Antwerp ablaze. On October 9 the remaining garrison surrendered. Of the 700 seamen, only 22 reportedly got back to England; the rest were killed, or captured and interned in Holland or Germany. The October 4 entry describes the soldiers' jubilation upon learning that they would be "leaving for the continent." They marched to Dover, Patten's father and brother accompanying him until they reached the pier and said their goodbyes. On their way to Dunkirk the next day, they attacked their tins of "bully beef" with their bayonets and met a French torpedo boat, tossing halfpennies to the French soldiers as mementos and laughing as the soldiers scrambled after them. The excitemen … [Click Below for Full Description]

SCOTT OF THE ANTARCTIC.
[Britain]. C. 1914 Transfer-printed lidded tin (c. 14 x 9.5 x 7 cm); lid not hinged anymore; very light traces of corrosion and rubbing; otherwise very good with deep and fresh colours. In February 1913, tragic news shocked the world. Robert Falcon Scott and four companions - Henry Bowers, Edgar Evans, Lawrence Oates and Edward Wilson - had perished on their return from the South Pole. One manufacturer issued this transfer-printed and colourful tea caddy with the portrait medallions of the five victims on the lid and sides, a full-length portrait of the explorer on skis, and on the verso of the tin an image of five men battling through a blizzard with narrative text telling the sad story. The tin was issued with the series title Empire Heroes; however, we were unable to trace any other tea caddy designs in this series.

(Paris: c. 1910-1914). Meunier, Nicolas-Adolphe Charles, Léon Gruel, and Paul Gruel. 6ff., loose. A collection of six designs for binding elements, three completed in pencil and watercolor, and the others incorporating pencil, ink, watercolor, gouache, and gilt accents. Two of the designs are monogrammed "CM" for Charles Meunier and were likely made into bindings by the bindery of Léon Gruel. The first, inspired by Moorish architecture and vividly colored in blue, green, and purple, is stamped "Léon Gruel...Paris" on the back with the title "Chariot de Terre Cuite" written in pencil below. Only half of the border and background are shown in the design, with the other half simply sketched in pencil. The other design, which depicts a central floral pattern colored in blue and green with gilt accents, bears a penciled note at the bottom that reads, "Jardin des Caresses a M Renevey." Eugène Renevey was a French collector and bibliophile, and a binding by Gruel for Le Jardin des Caresses, the description for which matches the design and colors of the binding depicted here, is documented in Renevey's library catalogue (Bibliothèque de M. Eugène Renevey 320). The four remaining binding designs are mixed media and incorporate pencil, ink, watercolor and gouache paint, and, in some cases, ink and gilt stamping directly from the binder's tools onto the paper. The largest of these is partially colored in pale blues, yellows, greens, and oranges, with visible corrections in pencil to the design. Six small pieces of paper are adhered to the back of the page and show a pencil drawing for … [Click Below for Full Description]

Keats, John
Doves Press, (Hammersmith), 1914. Large octavo. 203pp. One of 200 copies. Printed in red and black. This collection was first mentioned as a tentative future project along with the collection by Shelley in March 1913, with a publication date eventually set for October of the following year. However, T. J. Cobden-Sanderson's long illness and the outbreak of war in August pushed the publication date to January 1915. This was the last anthology of English poetry printed at the Press. Fine in the original full vellum and housed in a cloth chemise and matching half-leather slipcase. (Tidcombe DP36). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Shelley, Percy Bysshe
(Hammersmith): Doves Press, 1914. Large octavo. 181pp. One of 200 copies. Printed in red and black. This collection was first mentioned as a tentative future project along with the collection by Keats in March 1913, with a publication date set for June 1914. After T. J. Cobden-Sanderson's long illness, he became very sensitive to any imperfections in his printing, blaming his age for his "growing inability to energize the Press to its finger-tips." Despite his fears, this work lives up to the high standards and fine quality one expects from the Press. Enclosed in chemise and matching half-leather slipcase. With the morocco book label of renowned bibliophile Charles C. Kalbfleisch to inside front cover, which has offset to the front flyleaf. Fine in the original full vellum. (Tidcombe DP35).

Copeau a lu. [Click Below for Full Description]

Tsiolkovsky, Konstantin (Tsiolkovskii, Ciolkowski, Ziolkowski, 1857-1935)
Kaluga: Tipografiia S. A. Semenova (self-published), 1914. Octavo (25.5 × 17.5 cm). Original tan printed wrappers; 16 pp. Two pp. of illustrations. Complete list of the author's publications on pp. 2-3 of wrappers. Light wear to wrappers; trace of moisture stains to wrapper edges, paper label remnant to upper left corner and erased private owner stamp. A very uncommon work by Konstantin Tsiolkovsky, the Russian aviation and astronautics pioneer, one of the founding fathers of rocket science and an important inspiration to the Soviet space program, but also Western research in the field. Tsiolkovsky was largely an autodidact who operated a small aerodynamics laboratory in his own apartment in provincial Kaluga; his early works were published by himself in small numbers and without additional funding. They are today very scarce. Although now considered a major pioneer in his field, Tsiolkovsky also failed to be recognized for his achievements throughout most of his career, gaining slight fame only in the early 1930s. His work is especially interesting insofar as it is not only scientifically motivated, but intrinsically connected to the Russian cultural and philosophical movement of Cosmism. Thus, much of Tsiolkovsky's inspiration for striving toward space travel can be traced to his early encounters with the Russian cosmist Nikolai Fedorov (1829-1903). He also authored various pamphlets with utopian proposals for reducing poverty and human suffering, such as the present publication which outlines his psychological conception of active Nirvana, a conscious attempt to regulat … [Click Below for Full Description]

KANDINSKY, Wassily (1866-1944)
London: Constable, 1914. First Edition thus. First English-language Edition of this a manifesto for abstract art, translated, and with an introduction, by Michael Sadler. Wide 8vo: xxvii,112pp, with 9 sepia plates and 3 full-page figures printed in black and red. Publisher's blue leather spine over marbled boards, maroon leather lettering piece gilt, edges rough-cut. Near Fine or better, tight and square; boards rubbed and lightly stained, preliminaries spotted, else clean and crisp, pages and plates nearly pristine. An exemplary example of this scarce title. A key document in the history of modern art, pioneering the movement to free painting from material reality, by one of the first artists to create a completely abstract painting, the nonobjective Russian painter Wassily Kandinsky. First published, in Munich, in 1912 as Uber das geistige in der kunst. Divided into two parts, About General Aesthetic (including an examination of geometrical forms) encourages artists to express their inner lives in abstract, nonmaterial terms (Kandinsky was deeply influenced by Wagner's Lohengrin, which, he felt, pushed the limits of music and melody beyond standard lyricism) and About Painting, discussion of the psychology of color and the language of form and color). Sadler is best remembered by bibliophiles for his remarkable collections and bibliographies N. B. DULAC, Edmund.)
London: Hodder & Stoughton, [1914]. Quarto. Original pictorial tan cloth, elaborate blue and gilt design to spine and front cover, floral patterned brown endpapers. Later gift inscription to front free endpaper. Covers lightly bowed, occasional minor foxing to contents, else a very good copy. Colour frontispiece and 22 colour plates by Edmund Dulac, tipped in (with captioned tissue guards), plates and letterpress within ornamental borders printed in pale bisque. First Dulac trade edition. "The exotic stories he illustrated struck a new chord in Dulac. They allowed him to enlarge his skill at caricature, and at the same time to sharpen his miniaturist's technique and to develop his lyrical sense of tone and composition. The sources he turned to were Japanese prints, which he had studied in his youth, with their flat colour and asymmetry, and the high detail and colour of Indian and Persian miniatures" (ODNB). These influences are very clear in this sumptuous gift book. There was also a deluxe edition of 500 signed copies in vellum. Hughey 35a. [Attributes: First Edition]

FERBER, Edna
Frederick A. Stokes New York (1914) - First Edition. James Montgomery Flagg dustjacket art and illustrations. An Uncommon Ferber title. Jock McChestesney, just out of college, serene in his English fitting suit and the perfection of his shirt, tie, collar and scarf-pin. Jack went looking for a job with an advertising agency. Jock dazzles them with his keen business sense and exemplary work ethic, but goes overboard on the charm and ends up alienating clients, unnerving his boss, and even patronizing his business-savvy mother. Ferber, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Show Boat and Giant, achieved her first great success with a series of stories featuring Emma McChesney: a smart, stylish, divorced mother who in a mere twelve years rose from stenographer to traveling sales representative to business manager and partner of the T. A. Buck Featherloom Petticoat Company. Near Fine in Good dustjacket, shallow chipping at spine ends and top front panel, some fairly small internal chips at lower spine area ('mended' at verso with clear tape), modest soiling and wear. Ex-library, with some bookplates, removed bookplates, and ink stamps throughout. Overall good plus. A very rare complete set of the Harriman Alaska Expedition publications. These volumes record the findings of perhaps the largest private expedition to Alaska ever undertaken, that backed by Edward Harriman in 1899 in cooperation with the Washington Academy of Sciences. The party, which included three artists, two photographers, and twenty-five distinguished scientists and naturalists (e.g. ornithologist and author Daniel G. Elliot, proto-conservationist John Muir, William H. Brewer of Yale, George Bird Grinnell, Prof. William Ritter of the University of California, etc.), sailed from Seattle on May 30, 1899 aboard the chartered steamship, Geo. W. Elder. Panorama albumen photograph on a dark grey mount and shrinkwrapped. Panorama is made up of seven individual albumen sheets arranged next to each other, and has manuscript on verso identifying location of the image. Taken circa 1914. Photograph measures 20" x 4 ½" and has very good contrast. Panorama is in very good condition with light silvering and light wear at edges; and mount has minor chipping to edges. This image depicts rail cars reading "D&RG," "Frisco," and "Rock Island" in the foreground, and with the town of Standardville, Utah in the background. The Carbon County town was established when a large coal deposit was discovered in Spring Canyon circa 1912 and was called "Standardville" due to its well planned layout. It grew quickly and by 1915 produced about 1,000 tons of coal daily, transported by the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad and the Utah Coal Route. The mining town thrived through the 1930s but was abandoned by the 1970s. This image depicts the Carbon County town when it had just begun its long legacy of coal mining. Image may have slight glare, please call for more images. .
