Moseley, H(enry) G(wynn) J(effreys).
London Taylor & Francis 1914 - (22,5 x 14,5 cm). SS. (541)-756. Mit Abbildungen und 3 teils gefalteten Tafeln. Original-Broschur. Erste Ausgabe des zweiten Teils von Moseleys berühmter Arbeit zur Bestimmung der Ordnungszahl der Elemente, ein Meilenstein in der Entwicklung der Atomphysik. - "Moseley, working under Rutherford in Manchester, used the method of X-ray spectroscopy devised by the Braggs to calculate variations in the wavelength of the rays emitted by each element. These he was able to arrange in a series according to the nuclear charge of each element. Thus if the nuclear charge of hydrogen is 1, in helium it is 2, in lithium 3, and so on by regular progression to uranium as 92. These figures Moseley called atomic numbers. He pointed out that they also represented a corresponding increase in extra-nuclear electrons and that it is the number and arrangement of these electrons rather than the atomic weight that determines the properties of an element. It was now possible to base the periodical table on a firm foundation, and to state with confidence that the number of elements up to uranium is limited to 92. When Moseley's table was completed, six atomic numbers had no corresponding elements; but Moseley himself was able to predict the nature of four of the missing elements" (PMM). - Gut erhalten. - DSB 9, 542; PMM 407; Norman 1559 [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Vil'chur, Mark Efimovich
New York: [Russkoe Slovo], 1914. Octavo (18.5 × 12.5 cm). Original printed wrappers; 93, [2] pp. Signed and inscribed by the author to Grigorii Raevskii. Private library stamp of Zoia O. Iur'eva. Rust to staple; a few pencil marks; some wear to lower spine; else about very good. Mark Vil'chur (1883-1940) was a Russian-American journalist who wrote for the newspaper "Russkoe slovo" (Russian Word, later Novoe Russkoe Slovo) and founded the first Russian publishing house in the United States. The book is a travel diary about the adventures and struggles of Russian immigrants in the New World. The text contains some statistical data about the immigrants, as well as Vil'chur's first impressions in New York after the arrival and his attempts to establish himself in his new surroundings. It is written with personal and emotional touch. One of the first accounts of Russian emigre life in North America. The book is signed by the author with the note: "To dear Grigorii Nikolaevich Raevskii - the author. February, 1924." Grigorii Nikolaevich Rakovskii (1889-1975) was a participant of the White Movement who was evacuated from Crimea via Constantinople and briefly lived in Prague before settling in New York. He worked as a journalist and bookseller, providing American libraries with rare Russian publications. He also collected materials on the history of the Russian emigration, which were later donated to the New York Public Library. KVK, OCLC show twelve copies, none outside of the US.

Major C J P Ball DSO MC
A complete and fully transcribed archive of nearly 60 uncensored letters written by Lieutenant, later Major C J P Ball DSO MC to his parent in the Isle of Wight whilst serving for the 29th Division RHA in Gallipoli. Ball was in the very first landings and was one of the last to leave, with the letter collection spanning the full period, giving a roughly weekly account with no letters apparently missing. The letters were written very freely. Ball was able to censor his own letters as he writes to his parents in a postscript on July 20th; " You can write quite freely these days. I censor my own letters, & yours are never opened , so you can write as you please". This had enabled him to write in-depth and detailed descriptions of actions, life and conditions at the front and in trenches, and to include material usually censored out. Ball was serving as a 2nd Lt Observation Officer, and therefore made it his business to be aware of all of the battlefield and what was going on.It was part of his job to site gun emplacements to enfilade Turkish trenches, which required reconnaissance in the front lines, which is described in harrowing detail. He worked closely with his Colonel and General, worked for a time as Adjutant, and his superiors seem to have been a useful and important officer. His connections gave him a fair amount of freedom, which enabled him to visit friends on offshore ships, and he was able to have some influence in promoting a family friend . The letters give a huge insight to the whole of the campaign on the Helles Peninsular, and we have been able to match even … [Click Below for Full Description]

FITZGERALD, F Scott
Philadelphia: E. A. Wright Bank Note Co., 1914. Philadelphia: E. A. Wright Bank Note Co.,, 1914. Presented by the Princeton University Triangle Club, season of 1914–1915; [together with] Fie! Fie! Fi-Fi! A facsimile of the 1914 acting script and the musical score. Columbia: University of South Carolina Press, 1996, number 130 of 500 copies. Small quarto. Original paper wrappers, black, orange and white decoration to front cover designed by I. E. Swart, stitched with white string as issued. Floorplan of theatre to last page. Very slight crease to centre, else an excellent copy. A remarkable survival of the original programme from the first tour of Fitzgerald's two-act musical comedy, presented by the Princeton Triangle Club. After premiering at Princeton on 19 December 1914, the Club went on a 3,500-mile Christmas tour, performing at Brooklyn, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Louisville, St. Louis, Chicago, Detroit, and Pittsburg between 21 and 31 December. A contemporary ownership inscription to the front cover ("Dec. 30, 1914, with Marion Willcox") places this programme at the Detroit performance. Two further performances were held the following year, in Newark and New York, on 20 February and 17 April 1915 respectively, bring the tour to a total of 14 performances. The programme is highly uncommon: institutionally there are just two known copies (one at the University of South Carolina and Fitzgerald's own annotated copy held by Princeton University Library). Fitzgerald's copy of the programme reveals some of his frustration with the final production: the programme credits Walker … [Click Below for Full Description]
