FRANCK, J. und G. HERTZ. - PROVING THE QUANTIZED MODEL OF THE BOHR ATOM AND PLANCK'S QUANTUM THEORY.
Braunschweig, Friedr. Vieweg & Sohn, 1914. Lex8vo. Contemp hcloth, gilt spine. Lower spine end a bit frayed, otherwise very fine. In: "Verhandlungen der deutschen Physikalischen Gesellschaft im Jahre 1914", 16. Jahrgang. IX,1072 pp. Franck & Hertz' papers: pp. 457-467 a. 512-517, textillustr. Fine and clean. ¶ First apperance of the famous Franck-Hertz Experiment which is considered as a new and independent support, not only of Planck's quantum theory and Einstein's light-quantum hypothesis but also of Bohr's theory of the atom with stationary states of discrete energies.Franck and Hertz were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1925 for this work and Franck concluded his Nobel lecture with the words "We know only to well that we owe the wide recognition that our work received to contact with the great concepts and ideas of M. Planck and in particular Niels Bohr.""In their famous experiments, Franck and Hertz' showed that electrons could impart energy to a mercury atom only if they had a kinetic energy exceeding 4.9 ev., and that exactly this quantum of energy was taken up by the mercury atom, causing it to emit light of the resonance line Å 2537. It was the first direct proof of the quantized nature of the energy transfer and of the connection of the quantum DeltaE of energy with the frequency p = DeltaE/h of the light emitted as the result of the transfer. These experiments are rightly regarded as the first decisive proof of the reality of the quantized energy levels that had just been postulated by Niel's Bohr..." Ernest Shackleton
Heinemann, 1914. Heinemann. Shackleton in the Antarctic a new impression published in 1914 by Heinemann. This copy is signed on the front free end paper by Ernest Shackleton to botanist Winifred Brenchley. The inscription is dated sept 1914 - only days before Shackleton set off with his crew on the endurance in an ill fated attempt to make the first land crossing of the Antarctic continet. It ws the beginnings of an epic journey, culminating in the sinking of the endurance and a dramatic rescue. This book recounts Shackleton's earlier expedition on the nimrod and his attempts to reach the South Pole. It has dozens of illustrations of the Antarctic, his crew and their deeds during this expedition from 1907-1909.A fantastic signed association copy. The book is very good. The spine has some fade. The front free end paper and back paper are heavily spotted. All other pages are free from foxing or spotting. There is a gentle lean. All illustrations are accounted for. Some rubbing to corners. SHACKLETON, ERNEST HENRY
1914. London: William Heinemann,, 1919. Royal8vo. In the original pictural blue cloth with silver lettering to spine and front board. Stamps to front end papers and title-page. Hindges loose a light soling to extremities. Upper and lower part of spine with a few nicks. The page edges browned, as usual with this book. This first impression was printed on poor quality paper and is prone to browning. XXI, (1), 375, (1) pp. + Colour photographic frontispiece + 87 monochrome photographic plates + large folding map, ¶ First edition, first impression with 3-line errata slip inserted into gutter at page 1, of the story of Shackleton's failed attempt, after learning of Amundsen's attainment of the South Pole, to be the first to cross the last continent from sea to sea. "The story of our attempt is the subject for the following pages, and I think that though failure in the actual accomplishment must be recorded, there are chapters in this book of high adventure, strenuous days, lonely nights, unique experiences, and above all, records of unflinching determination, supreme loyalty, and generous self-sacrifice on the part of my men which, even in these days that have witnessed the sacrifices of nations and regardlessness of self on the part of individuals, still will be of interest to readers who now turn gladly from the red horror of war and the strain of the last five years to read, perhaps with more understanding minds, the tale of the White Warfare of the South. The struggles, the disappointments, and the endurance of this small party of Britishers, hidden away for nearly two years … [Click Below for Full Description]

BOHR, NIELS. - [EXPANDING QUANTUM THEORY - PRESENTATION-COPY]
1914. [London, Taylor & Francis], 1913. 8vo. Original printed wrappers. Excellent, very fresh copy, with only a two small marginal tears to front wrapper, no loss. Spine and cords completely fresh and fully intact. Pp. (1) +506-525. ¶ Scarce first edition, off-print issue with presentation-inscription, of Bohr's first paper on the Stark-effect, being the seminal paper in which Bohr for the first time applies his theory to electric effect and expresses his widening interest in quantum theory. The work is inscribed to the famous Danish physicist "Hr. Mag. scient. A.W. Marke/ med venlig Hilsen/ fra Forfatteren" ("Mr. Master of Sciences A.W. Marke/ with kind regards/ from the author"). Axel Waldbuhm Marke (1883 - 1942) was professor of Physics in Copenhagen. His scientific works were originally centred around magnetic investigations, for which he was trained by P. Weiss in Zürich, in 1914. Due to WWI, he had to return, however, and during the difficult journey back, he lost all of his records. In 1916 he published an important work on the thermomagnetic qualities of water, and he has written a number of highly praised text books on physics, optics, meteorology, and climatology. He was renowned for his great skills in popularizing difficult scientific results and was famous for his lectures. The Stark-effect (the shifting and splitting of spectral lines of atoms and molecules due to presence of an external static electric field) is named after Johannes Stark, who discovered it in 1913. Although Stark shortly after having discovered it became and ally of Nazi Germany and rejected … [Click Below for Full Description]

BERLIOZ, Hector 1803-1869 et al.
1914. Fabiani, perhaps best-known as a highly accomplished harpist, was also a composer, pianist, organist, and singing teacher. He is noted among the "prominent names in the harp world at the time of the introduction of the American made harp." Rensch: The Harp, p. 135.The present scrapbook well-documents Fabiani's career in France and England but also in American cities including Chicago, Cincinnati, Detroit, and Washington, as attested to by numerous contemporary newspaper reviews and letters."Signor Fabiani is [English] by birth... He began the study of music at the age of four, and at eight won his first success in a public concert as a Harp Soloist... His mother was the great Bochsa's favorite pupil... Signor Fabiani was taken early in life by his father to Paris where his real artistic education and best life began. His talent and culture speedily procured him admission into aristocratic, artistic and literary circles generally closed against all foreigners. He became a member of the Imperial Association of French Musical Artists; received a brilliant ovation from the incomparable "Conservatoire Orchestra" at the rehearsal of his Choral Harp Concero (the first ever written since the harp was an instrument) and he produced at the inauguration of Erard's new hall a Choral Orchestral Agnus Dei, dedicated to Meyerbeer, who... introduced him to the German Court, where he became acquainted with Liszt, Heller... and other Masters. During the brilliant reign of Napoleon III, Signor Fabiani was a familiar figure in Paris, where he played at the most distinguished public and … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bragaglia, Anton Giulio
Nalato Editore, 1914. Cfr. Cammarota, Futurismo, 56.3; Echaurren, Futurcollezionismo, pp. 12-14; Parr - Badger, The photobook, I, p. 90 (che registra solo la seconda edizione): "Fotodinamismo futurista is not only one of the most interesting of numerous Futurist manifestos, it is also the first modernist photobook (...)". Contenute sfrangiature all'unghiatura, con qualche mancanza; per il resto freschissimo e pulito.

Rankin of Columbia Hotel in Portland, Maine as his executor and bequeathing "all my musical and literary works, published and unpublished" to him. With: A 1-1/2 page autograph letter to Rankin sent with the will expressing Fabiani's wish to will the manuscript of his Etudes to his friend, asking that he "settle it with... WYTSMAN, P.
Verteneuil & Desmet, Brussels, 1914. With 43 fine chromolithographic plates, many finished by hand-coloring. All 26 parts in their original printed wrappers and in excellent condition. Preserved in a folding cloth box with a spine label. First edition. This is the complete set of serial monographs on various groups of birds, with contributions by leading British and European ornithologists such as Sclater, Bowdler Sharpe, Ogilvie-Grant, Hartert, Hellmayr, Salvadori, and others. The magnificent color plates after paintings by Keulemans and Grönvold include 11 stunning illustrations of parrots. According to Zimmer, the intention was to have the complete series embrace all avian groups. This series was edited by the Belgian ornithologist and entomologist, Wytsman (1866-1925), who authored the work on the second family, the Todidae. The text consists of a brief general account of each family, in regard to its relationships and technical history, keys to the genera and species, with their principal synonymy and geographical distribution. The work will thus be of great convenience and value as a synopsis of the birds of the world. [Attributes: First Edition]

Peters & Co., H.J.
Chicago: H. J. Peters Co, 1914. Wraps. Good + overall. A scarce profusely illustrated large lighting fixture trade catalog from a famed Chicago manufacturer, advertising fixtures using incandescent light bulbs with ductile tungsten wire just 2 years after their introduction to the market by General Electric. Not recorded on OCLC. The oblong folio catalog boasts "3,000 exclusive designs of the highest quality", with 96 pages devoted to fixtures currently in stock and "available for immediate shipment". It boasts "Electric, Tungsten, Combination Fixtures, Indirect and Semi Indirect Effects, Domes, Brackets, Portables, Glassware and Accessories". One particularly popular lamp style made by H. J. Peters was the bent glass panel lamp, made from panels of colored slag glass curved to fit into a decorative metal frame or overlay holding the sections in place, and forming an umbrella type shade. There is a perfect example here at plate 763, showing one of these lamps with a wonderful solid brass frame with scenes of a hilly countryside worked into its lower edge.At the rear are 2 color printed pages with samples of the richly colored art glass, also known as marble glass or malachite glass, a streaked pressed glass originally produced in the late 1800s in England. This glass is prized for its intense coloring and richly marbled effect. The catalog is divided into 2 sections: the first part with items ready to be assembled, the second part called the Blue Book, with stock items ready to ship, and at the rear 2 full color pages advertising colored gl … [Click Below for Full Description]

NIELSEN, Kay, illustrator]
London: Hodder and Stoughton, no date [1914]. [Fantasy/folklore] FIRST EDITION, trade issue. Quarto (29 x 23cm), pp.206; [2]. With twenty-five mounted colour plates, captioned tissues, and other black and white illustrations within the text. Publisher's dark blue cloth decoratively blocked in gilt, illustrated endpapers printed in gilt and black, edges untrimmed. A lightly used copy with one or two very light marks within, plates and tissues all fine, binding very good; was worn at joints now expertly restored. An attractive copy. Kay Nielsen, along with Arthur Rackham and Edmund Dulac is considered one of the triumvirate of classic 'great' illustrators from the Edwardian 'Golden Age' of illustration and gift book design. Influenced by the modern style of Beardsley, Burne-Jones and an influx of Japanese art that was spreading to the West, the books Neilsen illustrated were unmistakeable from those of his contemporaries. His first book, Quiller Couch's 'In Powder and Crinoline' (1913) was a a distinctively 20th century book that Nielsen made his own. This was followed by 'East of The Sun and West of the Moon' (1914), arguably his masterpiece, comprising fifteen Nordic tales (written by Gudrun Thorne-Thomsen) which Nielsen also appropriated, through his striking compositions and use of colour. Book Collector No.271, 'The Great Illustrators'. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
