Aa. vv. (Boccioni, Carrà, Russolo, Balla, Severini, Soffici)
London, The Doré Galleries, [1914 (April-May)], Catalogo originale. Marinetti, con allegato ritaglio di giornale (The Scketch 1111, 13 May 1914) con in prima pagina fotografia del «Portrait of Marinetti by himself (dynamic combination of objects)». Rarissimo. (the foundation of futurist primitivism)» e quello che comincia, dopo una spaziatura, «With the desire to intensify.» (p. 14 del cat. Londra 1912). [Click Below for Full Description]

SHACKLETON, Sir Ernest Henry.
2 pp. on 2 ll., 4to (253 x 203mm), on paper with printed Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition letterhead watermarked 'legal vellum', historical pin and pencil docketing mark in top left corner; folded for posting, extremely light marking on first l. and around pin holes, otherwise in very good condition. An important letter from Shackleton to Price about the publication of W.S. Bruce's scientific reports of the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition, especially the 'Biological reports', which were already 'ready for press' (presumably volume IV, Zoology, Parts II-XX, Vertebrates, which would be published in 1915). The polar scientist William Speirs Bruce (1867-1921) had been prevented from joining Scott's Discoveryexpedition due to Sir Clement Markham's fears that Bruce, who was considered one of 'the best-equipped and most experienced of all polar scientists in Britain' (ODNB), would be a rival to Scott. Nonetheless, Bruce raised funds for the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition of 1902-1904, which he headed, and gained the support of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society; although Bruce's Antarctic expedition was highly successful, his efforts to find funding for a second Scottish National Antarctic Expedition in 1910 and 1911 were unsuccessful. Similarly, Bruce struggled to fund the publication of the first expedition's scientific papers, some of which were published in journals. The series of the reports started with the 'Physics' volume of 1907, but their impact suffered from the long intervals between the publication of subsequent volumes in 1908, 1909, 1912, 1915 … [Click Below for Full Description]

THOMAS, Edward.
London: Thomas Nelson and Sons, April 1914. Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine and front gilt, illustrated endpapers, top edge gilt. With the dust jacket and illustrated plate after Ernest Hazlehurst pasted to front cover. Contemporary bookseller's ticket of W. H. Smith & Son to rear pastedown. Spine and extremities very slightly rubbed, jacket spine a little toned with some loss to ends and tape repairs to verso. A very good copy. Frontispiece and five other plates after drawings by Ernest Hazlehurst tipped-in to grey paper, as issued, with captioned tissue guards. First edition, first impression, with the rare dust jacket. In Pursuit of Spring was Thomas's last work of prose and provides an account of his week-long bicycle ride from central London out into the Quantock Hills in Somerset undertaken in March 1913. It is often considered the best of Thomas's country books, and mixes "observation, information, stories, portraits, self-portraits, literary criticism, folk-tales, and reflection" (ODNB). The book is scarce in itself, but the dust jacket is of considerable rarity, especially to retain the illustrated plate pasted to the front cover. The last copy in jacket recorded at auction was in 1983. [Attributes: First Edition]

Pankhurst, Emmeline
London: Eveleigh Nash, 1914. First edition, first printing. Publisher’s original navy blue cloth with gilt titles to the spine. With 16 photographic illustrations throughout the text. An excellent better than very good copy, the binding square and firm showing only light rubbing at the extremities and a little dulling of the gilt titles. The contents are entirely complete, clean throughout and without previous owner’s inscriptions or stamps. Scarce in the first edition, especially so in this condition. The autobiography of the leading British suffragette and founder member of the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU). Emmeline Pankhurst’s militant tactics earned her multiple prison sentences and stirred up controversy within society and among other suffragist groups. Widely credited with bringing women's issues to the forefront, thus helping them win the vote, she is considered one of the most influential women of the twentieth century. RICCARDI PRESS.) TENNYSON, Alfred, Lord.
London: Philip Lee Warner, publisher to the Medici Society, 1914. London: Philip Lee Warner, publisher to the Medici Society,, 1914. Octavo. Original limp vellum, titles to spine and cover gilt, green silk ties, top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Housed in a red cloth solander case. A fine copy. First Riccardi Press edition, number 11 of 12 copies printed on vellum, of which 10 were for sale, out of a limited edition of 1,012 copies. This copy retains the publisher's advertisements slip loosely laid in, also printed on vellum. First issued publicly in 1850, this famous elegiac poem is a tribute to Tennyson's college friend, Arthur Henry Hallam (1811–33), son of the famous historian Henry Hallam. Tennyson's first verses had been published before he was 20, but after Hallam's death he published nothing for nine years, although all the while he was working on this poem, the product of protracted meditation. Written in rhyming quatrains, the poem moves from grief and doubt to certainty that the universe is purposeful. It was a sensational bestseller, striking a deep note of resonance with Victorian readers. As Tomkinson indicates, the Riccardi Press "was adopted in 1909 by the Medici Society at 7 Grafton Street, London: the books [were] printed at the Chiswick Press and published by Philip Lee Warner, who was publisher to the Medici Society until his death in 1925… The aim of the Press has been to produce finely printed books at reasonable prices and for sale through the ordinary channels of trade…" Their print runs were larger than other private presses, and the paper product … [Click Below for Full Description]

Marc, Franz, Maler, Zeichner und Graphiker (1880-1916)
Sindelsdorf, 18. IV. 4 SS. auf Doppelblatt. Gr.-8vo. Gestempelter Briefkopf, liniertes Papier. [Click Below for Full Description]

Schiele, Egon. (1890-1918)
Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Autograph letter from the important Austrian painter known for his intense, expressionist and often controversial works, to a Dr. Scheu (apparently the lawyer Dr. Jakob Scheu), regarding the repayment of a debt. May 7, 1914. Translated from the German, in part: "Dear Dr. Scheu, it is quite impossible at the moment for me to pay the whole debt of 247K for Mr. Holub; however, the week after next I will be able to pay a part, and I hope in the course of this month the rest. Best wishes, Egon Schiele." 1 p. of a bifolium on orange paper. Light creases; overall in fine condition. 6 x 8 inches (15.1 x 20.2 cm). Unpublished, not in Nebehay. <br style=""><br style="">1914 found Schiele enjoying success for the first time outside of Austria-Hungary, exhibiting in Rome, Brussels, and Paris, and beginning to learn the art of engraving from Robert Philippi and with the support of Arthur Roessler. It was also in 1914 that he first encountered Edith Harms, daughter of a master locksmith whose house was across the street from his studio, whom he would marry in 1915. <br style=""><br style="">However, it was also a time of financial turmoil for Schiele. In January he exhibited in the Reininghaus Competition, and must have been disappointed not to win the prize of 3,000 kronen. Many of his letters from early 1914 find him making desperate attempts to sell paintings, while negotiating various debts. The debt referred to in this letter, to a tailor named Holub, remained unpaid for several years. On March 4, 1918, the lawyer Dr. Jakob Scheu wrote to Schiele wi … [Click Below for Full Description]
