EINSTEIN, ALBERT
Berlin: Königlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften, 1914. FIRST EDITION OFFPRINT. Original wrappers. Fine. FIRST EDITION, COMMERCIAL OFFPRINT ISSUE, of Einstein's important 1914 paper on the development of general relativity. "In summer 1914, Einstein felt that the new theory [general relativity] should be presented in a comprehensive review. He also felt that a mathematical derivation of the field equations that would determine them uniquely was still missing."Both tasks are addressed in a long paper, presented in October 1914 to the Prussian Academy for publication in its Sitzungsberichte. It is entitled 'The formal foundation of the general theory of relativity'; here, for the first time, Einstein gave the new theory of relativity the epithet 'general' in lieu of the more cautious 'generalized' that he had used for the Entwurf" (Landmark Writings in Western Mathematics 1640-1940)."According to John Norton ('How Einstein Found His Field Equations'), this major review article was intended to convey the full content of the 1913 'Entwurf' theory: 'The principal novelty lies in the mathematical formulation of the theory. Drawing on earlier work with [Marcel] Grossman, Einstein formulated his gravitational field equations using a variation principle. Using this richer mathematical structure Einstein offered a proof purporting to demonstrate that his theory had the maximum covariance compatible with the hole argument; that is, covariance under 'justified' transformation between the 'adapted coordinate systems' he had introduced with Grossman'" (Calaprice, The Einstein Alman … [Click Below for Full Description]

Braun advises all this and more with charm, wit and intelligence. " American Immigration Historian Hasia Diner notes, "This book gives a peek into the lives and sensibilities of Eastern European Jewish women in America, at a moment in time when they put themselves onto the path of integration into American life. Karl Baedeker
Verlag von Karl Baedeker Leipzig, 1914. This Baedekers Indien is the only edition ever published about India and only in German in 1914. However it is much more than a guide to India. Actually it covers most of the European possessions in south and south east Asia as well as the Far East that were accessible to European tourists at the time. As the full title reads “ Indian, Ceylon, VorderIndien, Birma, Die Malayische Halbinsel, Siam, Java. I-LXXI 1-358. Both the binding with its bright red colours and gilt title on the back and front are as new, in perfect condition, as is the textblock with all the maps, plans and architectural plans. It is obvious that this book never made it to India. It appears to never having Ben read. All maps look like never being opened. It also comes with the dust jacket Although the paper of the Baedeker dust jackets never were of the same quality as the guidebooks. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

Arthur (Arturo) Posnansky
Berlin, Dietrich Reimer, 1914. Arthur Posnansky (1873 - 1946) was an important contributor to Bolivian culture history, being not only a pioneer in Bolivian archaeology, but also in Bolivian cinematography, in the development of the national park system, and in the introduction of the first automobile into Bolivia. He was trained as a naval engineer in his native Vienna, a skill which he quickly parlayed into a fortune in Bolivia in the rubber boom, in terms of transporting the latex by river transport. With the loss of Arce to Brazil in 1903, he shifted his focus to other fields. He brought the first gasoline-powered motorboat to Lake Titicaca that year, and while visiting the excavations of the French Crequi-Montfort and Senechal de La Grange Mission, under the direction of George Courty, during trips to the lake, he became very intrigued with the site of Tiwanaku and its place in Bolivian prehistory. Posnansky shortly thereafter began his extensive collection of material artifacts from Tiwanaku, constructing the -"Palacio Tihuanacu" in 1917-1918 to house the stela, ceramics and other materials which he collected. This structure and ist collections were subsequently sold to the state, becoming the current Museo Nacional de Arqueologia. Arthur Posnansky (Viena, 1873 - La Paz , 1946), fue un militar, ingeniero naval, héroe de guerra, constructor … [Click Below for Full Description]

EINSTEIN, Albert
Königlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften, Berlin, 1914. First edition of this extremely rare offprint, a remarkable association copy inscribed by the theoretical physicist Gunnar Nordström, often designated by modern writers as 'The Einstein of Finland'. Einstein had an extended correspondence with Nordström on the subject of Nordström's own competing theory of gravitation, which at the time was considered a serious competitor to Einstein's, and which he completed in the same year as the present paper. A few years later Nordström also assisted Einstein in his work on gravitational waves. The present paper was the crucial step between Einstein's Entwurf theory of 1913 and the final form of general relativity which Einstein completed in November 1915: it develops the mathematical techniques necessary for the final formulation, namely the 'absolute differential calculus' of Tullio Levi-Civita, as well as the expression of the field equations in terms of a variational principle, which later proved to be of great importance. This author's presentation offprint, with "Überreicht vom Verfasser" printed on upper wrapper, must not to be confused with the much more common trade offprint which lacks this printed statement (see below). We have located only one copy of this author's presentation offprint at auction, in the collection belonging to Einstein's son Hans Albert sold at Christie's in 2006 (there was no copy in Einstein's own collection of his offprints sold by Christie's in 2008). Provenance: Gunnar Nordström (1881-1923) ('G. Nordström' written in pencil on upper wrapper in No … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hardy, Thomas
1914. Hardy, Thomas. "THE THROWN ELM & SHE." Original handwritten manuscript of Hardy's poem, one page, 4to, (n.p., n.d.) Eighteen lines of verse, written in ink on fine paper, titled at the top: "The Thrown Elm" with "& she?" added in pencil. An excellent Hardy poem dealing with the theme of a love which is lost to time, using the age-rings of a finally fallen Elm tree as a conceit, beginning: "When you put on that inmost ring / She, like you, was a little thing: / When your circles reached their fourth, / Scarce she knew life's south from north. . . ." Nine of the eighteen lines show revision, some of these alterations are extensive. Lightly and uniformly faded and toned (from a previous framing), but essentially in Near Fine condition. Housed in a new green folding case. According to Purdy (p. 255) this is the manuscript "given by Hardy himself to Mrs. St. John Hornby." C. H. St. John Hornby (1867-1946) was the founder of the famous Ashendene Press in 1895 and served as chair of the Hardy memorial committee after the author's death. It is an earlier draft with alterations and alternative readings. The final version was first published in WINTER WORDS (1928) under the title, "The Felled Elm and She." Hardy routinely destroyed his working drafts; we've only seen a handful such as this, in commerce or at auction, in the last thirty years.. Signed by Author. Original Manuscript. Unbound. Near Fine.

Haushofer, K.
Erlangen, Junge & Sohn, 1914. 8vo (24.2 x 16.0 cm). 110 pp., two folded maps, several text figures and maps. Original printed wrappers. The author's thesis, or "Inaugural-Dissertation". Karl Haushofer (1869-1946) was a major in the Royal Bavarian Army and, during WWI, a major general in the German army. He travelled widely through southeast Asia and India, and later (1908-1910) in Japan, Korea, Siberia and China (Manchuria). "Haushofer entered academia with the aim of restoring and regenerating Germany. Haushofer believed the Germans' lack of geographical knowledge and geopolitical awareness to be a major cause of Germany’s defeat in World War I, as Germany had found itself with a disadvantageous alignment of allies and enemies. The fields of political and geographical science thus became his areas of specialty. In 1919, Haushofer became Privatdozent for political geography at Munich University and in 1933 professor. After the establishment of the Nazi regime, Haushofer remained friendly with Hess, who protected Haushofer and his wife from the racial laws of the Nazis, which deemed her a "half-Jew". During the pre-war years, Haushofer was instrumental in linking Japan to the Axis powers, acting in accordance with the theories of his book Geopolitics of the Pacific Ocean. . After the July 20 Plot to assassinate Hitler, Haushofer's son Albrecht (1903-1945) went into hiding but was arrested on 7 December 1944 and put into the Moabit prison in Berlin. During the night of 22-23 April 1945, he and other selected prisoners, such as Klaus Bonhoeffer, were walked out of the prison b … [Click Below for Full Description]

Berlin: Königlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften, 1914. FIRST EDITION OFFPRINT. FIRST EDITION, COMMERCIAL OFFPRINT ISSUE, of Einstein's important 1914 paper on the development of general relativity. "In summer 1914, Einstein felt that the new theory [general relativity] should be presented in a comprehensive review. He also felt that a mathematical derivation of the field equations that would determine them uniquely was still missing. "Both tasks are addressed in a long paper, presented in October 1914 to the Prussian Academy for publication in its Sitzungsberichte. It is entitled 'The formal foundation of the general theory of relativity'; here, for the first time, Einstein gave the new theory of relativity the epithet 'general' in lieu of the more cautious 'generalized' that he had used for the Entwurf" (Landmark Writings in Western Mathematics 1640-1940). "According to John Norton ('How Einstein Found His Field Equations'), this major review article was intended to convey the full content of the 1913 'Entwurf' theory: 'The principal novelty lies in the mathematical formulation of the theory. Drawing on earlier work with [Marcel] Grossman, Einstein formulated his gravitational field equations using a variation principle. Using this richer mathematical structure Einstein offered a proof purporting to demonstrate that his theory had the maximum covariance compatible with the hole argument; that is, covariance under 'justified' transformation between the 'adapted coordinate systems' he had introduced with Grossman'" (Calaprice, The Einstein Almanac). Burbank, Luther.
Luther Burbank Press 1914-1915, NY and London. 12 volume set, original full brown morocco embossed with art nouveau panel design of twin fruiting apple trees on front and rear covers, spines similiarly embossed and with titles, large octavos (7 x 9.5 inches). 1260 tipped-in color photo plates (105 in each volume). This set one of an unspecified number with tipped in engraved dedication/subscriber leaf designed by Tiffany and Co. and signed by Luther Burbank at bottom of leaf. Subscriber name at top is "Douglas P. Street." An exhaustive record of the work of the pioneering botanist, horticulturalist, and agricultural experimenter Luther Burbank (1849-1926). While prosperity has not been universally kind to Luther Burbank, he was widely revered in his lifetime for his contributions to agriculture - many of the more than 800 strains and varieties of various fruits, grains, vegetables, flowers, etc., he created became important crops. One of his first efforts, the Burbank potato, was developed to combat the recurring potato famines in Ireland and the later russet variety remains the most widely used potato in the world of commercial food processing (french fries!). Among his friends and admirers were Paramahansa Yogananda, who dedicated his 1949 "Autobiography of a Yogi" to Luther Burbank; Thomas Edison, Jack London, et al. The production of these volumes was the accomplishment of the Luther Burbank Society, formed in 1912 to organize and publish the record of his work, as well as to aid in the management of his business affairs. In addition to the editing of Burbank's notoriou … [Click Below for Full Description]

A spectacular account of travel through Siberia toward the sources of the Yenisei river, across northwestern Mongolia and over the Tian-Shan into Chinese Turkestan to Kashgar An extremely scarce, engrossing account of this little travelled area, which the author and his party traversed, surveyed and mapped during 1910 and 1911, taking numerous photographs, a number included as folding panoramas. In addition to anthropological and geographical accounts of the region, chapters deal with big game hunting, notably the huge, big-horn sheep ovis ammon, of which it is noted "no other beast, for its size, carries such a weight of horn". Also shot were ibex, gazelle, wolf and wild pig. A fascinating book, with a distinguished provenance. Czech (Asia) p. 45. Blue cloth. Spines bumped, some wear, scattered light foxing. Rouault, Georges
Most n.p. and n.d. [but Versailles]. Together 70 pp. Various sizes. A content-rich collection of letters from the French painter and illustrator Georges Rouault (1871-1958) to the Czech publisher Josef Florian (1873-1941), who in 1914 published the first color reproductions of Rouault's work. Regarding those reproductions Rouault gratefully writes to Florian in one of the present letters, "C'est la premiere fois que je possede une reproduction fidèle." In the same letter, Rouault writes, "J'ai mes albums de chansons à votre disposition," and many of these letters concern these chansons as well as the color printing of his works. There is much, too, about Rouault's personal life, as well as references to Léon Bloy, whom Florian also published and who was an important friend to and influence on Rouault, as well as to J.K. Huysmans, and to Rouault's "Miserere," his famous series of engravings on the miseries of war on which he was then at work. Based in Stará ?í?e, Moravia and Prague, Florian was a crucial figure in Czech publishing, producing fine editions of Rouault, Bloy, Kafka, and many others. Brooklyn: Press of P. J. Collison, 1914. Large 8vo. 59, [1]pp. 16 photogravure plates. Publisher's cloth-backed brown paper stiff paper wrappers Provenance: Robert Frothingham (lengthy inscription on front endpaper) A fine copy of a very rare privately-printed work recording an expedition into Wyoming. McAleenan was a noted New York diamond dealer and avid sportsman. After several of his fishing and hunting expeditions, he privately-printed books about the trips for the participants and friends. The present work is among his most scarce. "This is an entertaining day by day journal with good photographs. The bear hunt was on the Majo Ranch of Jones Bros. & Magill, 50 miles up the South Fork of the Shoshone. A reference on p. 55 fixes the date of the hunt (1914)" (Streeter). This copy inscribed by the author to Robert Frothingham, an advertising executive who became a noted outdoorsman and writer on outdoor life: "You love the great out-of-doors and have had many experiences. The tips and the verteran are blood brothers and the sone of the winds over glacier passes, snow clad peaks, and sighing pine forests are the songs we love. I have no apologies to make concerning this little book and the reason I did not sign my name to it was not that I was ashamed but rather that the book belongs to the good fellows with me, although written by me. Only the kindly and generous eyes of friends will scan its pages so share no criticism and ask no praise." OCLC records only the Yale and Brigham Young University copies; the Thomas W.
