At a time when women could neither vote nor own property, Royal Neighbors became one of the first national organizations to offer life insurance to women (and also one of the first to insure children, in 1918). Continually at the vanguard of social change, the group made a practive of providing disaster relief (as with the 1906 San Francisco earthquake), and were ardent supporters of the suffrage movement, advocating for the passage of the 19th Amendment (ref.Royal Neighbors and IL Genealogy). [Charles Goddard]
Chicago: United States Printing and Lithograph Co., 1914. Striking color pictorial one sheet, 41" X 27" (lithograph). A classic of cinema incunabula, from the original serial by Charles Goddard for the Eclectic Film Co. (episode 4). Little specks of wear and rubbing restored, near fine, neatly backed. Framed. Rarer than an honest movie trailer, especially when compared to posters from the talking pictures era. My tracking of posters is imprecise but I found 3 Perils of Pauline one sheet auction records from Christie's long ago (random, from among 20 serial episodes, each with a different image), $6,600 in 1992, $8,000 in 1995, and $7,500 in 1996. Ex-Camden House, 1985 (their grade was "condition A"). Pauline (Pearl White) evades attempts on her life by pirates, rats, Indians, gypsies, sharks and her dastardly guardian Her most symbolic plight is being tied to railroad tracks in front of a rapidly approaching train. The upcoming 21st century sequel, with a plot that turns towards realism, finds a periled Pauline giving her Visa number, expiration date, billing address, and social security number to 15 different, now defunct and desperate dot-coms. And speaking of modern movements in the 21st century, as the adverse dominates movies, artists across American feed on the new economy and rape the new culture with their own movement for film, theater, literature, music, sculpture, paper, and canvas, begging to be called 21st century depressionism. Near fine.

Emile Magne
Brussells, Paris: Librairie Nationale d'Art et d'Histoire, G. Van Oest & Cie, 1914. With over 100 illustrations of Poussin's paintings and drawings. Nicolas Poussin, 1594 - 1665, was a French painter in the classical style. His work predominantly features clarity, logic, and order, and favours line over colour. His work serves as an alternative to the dominant Baroque style of the 17th century. Until the 20th century he remained the major inspiration for such classically-oriented artists as Jacques-Louis David and Paul Cezanne. He spent most of his working life in Rome, except for a short period when Cardinal Richelieu ordered him back to France to serve as First Painter to the King. CONDITION Bound in paper-covered boards. Binding is split though this is common with the original paper boards. Pages 81-86, including three plates, and also between 114 to 118, are partially detached. There is some wear to the extremities, including some bumping and rubbing, with the card of the spine split in several places. Internally the pags are generally clean and bright. Overall Condition: Good Only.

EINSTEIN, Albert.
Berlin: Königlichen Akademie der Wissenschaften, 1914. First edition. First edition of this extremely rare offprint, a remarkable association copy inscribed by the theoretical physicist Gunnar Nordström, often designated by modern writers as 'The Einstein of Finland'. Einstein had an extended correspondence with Nordström on the subject of Nordström's own competing theory of gravitation, which at the time was considered a serious competitor to Einstein's, and which he completed in the same year as the present paper. A few years later Nordström also assisted Einstein in his work on gravitational waves. The present paper was the crucial step between Einstein's Entwurf theory of 1913 and the final form of general relativity which Einstein completed in November 1915: it develops the mathematical techniques necessary for the final formulation, namely the 'absolute differential calculus' of Tullio Levi-Civita, as well as the expression of the field equations in terms of a variational principle, which later proved to be of great importance. This author's presentation offprint, with "Überreicht vom Verfasser" printed on upper wrapper, must not to be confused with the much more common trade offprint which lacks this printed statement (see below). We have located only one copy of this author's presentation offprint at auction, in the collection belonging to Einstein's son Hans Albert sold at Christie's in 2006 (there was no copy in Einstein's own collection of his offprints sold by Christie's in 2008).
Felix Marcilhac : Paul Jouve. Les Editions de l'auteur 2005.

Robert Johnson McClintock
Condition: Very Good +. Wonderful Princeton University photo album, put together by Robert Johnson McClintock '17 (same graduating class as F. Scott Fitzgerald, who left early in his Senior year and never graduated). The album, an oblong quarto, roughly spans McClintock's 4 year tenure (1914-1917) at Princeton and captues the construction of --and earliest football games played at-- Palmer Stadium (1914-1997), the Princeton crew rowing on Carnegie Lake, nice shots of the campus itself and interior shots of McClintock's dorm room and his fraternity (probably along fraternity row on Washington St.). Also includes nice vernacular shots of friends and classmates and his family life. The album is solid and well-preserved to boot, with a clean, sturdy leatherette binding and crisp, clear photos (a number of which are captioned in McClintock's hand) thruout. A nice piece of early 20th century Americana.

Coleman(?), Wilbur Sherman
var. n.p., 1914. Hardcover. The author took with him in 1914 a copy of the first edition of Ernest Peixotto's "Pacific Shores from Panama" on a trip to South America. In it he recorded a diary of his trip, and inserted photographs he took along the way. Then, in Lima, he writes: "7 A.M. Feb. 4th. .. The revolution broke at 4a.m. this morning. The Palace across the Plaza was taken after an hour and a half of rifle and Gatlin gun fire... and so he fills a page with his impressions of the scene. Guillermo Billinghurst was overthrown on February 4, 1914, in a military coup headed by colonel Oscar R. Benavides, Javier and Manuel Prado, and conservatives members of the Civilista Party. "Feb. 5th ... The President was seized + thrown into prison, his only loyal officer the Minister of War was killed..." Nearly all of the photographs are filled on their backs with descriptions; most are of a travelogue type, but some are of the coup. On one of a soldier standing before dead bodies, "The soldier ... was undecided whether to chase me or have his 'picture tuk'. Vanity won..." Book is worn and shaken; sold for the diary and photographs, many of which were tipped to the pages of the book. The name is taken from the owner's signature on the first page of the Preface; but the last name is a trifle indistinct and may be Cockran or something similar. All photographs are signed with "W.S.C." Very good. Item #17369.

London: The Government of India, 1914. Collated, complete with numerous coloured, photogravure and black and white photographs of the event, the people and of India. With a folding coloured plan to the rear of the work of the coronation area. The Durbar of 1911 was to commemorate the coronation in Britain of George V and Mary of Teck and to allow their proclamation as Emperor and Empress of India. This work discusses the event in detail, and its initial publication was delayed due to the detail included. There are a record of speeches, attendee lists and the order of proceedings. Scarce in such a lovely, complete and bright condition. In a half morocco binding with marbled paper boards. Externally, excellent condition with little to no sheflwear. Spine has faded slightly as has rear joint. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with just a few light spots to the fore edge, top edge and bottom edge. Minor creasing to the tissue guard of plate to page 6. Overall Condition: Near Fine. [Attributes: First Edition]

Doubleday, Page & Company, Garden City, 1914. FIRST EDITION. (bibliographer's binding `A')-McElrath A12. The advance binding of paper-covered boards with cloth spine and paper label is completely different from the regular trade edition (gilt stamped, deep reddish orange cloth). The number of copies in the advance issue is unknown, but it was certainly only a small fraction of the regular edition. BAL 15046 "Advance copies were issued in gray paper boards, unbleached linen shelfback, printed paper label on spine." (BAL). The inscription is from Otto Stade, owner of Hollywood Books in the early part of the twentieth century. A unique and singular volume. Minor soiling and bumped corners. Some wear to label on spine. George Borrow
London, Edinburgh and Boston: T N Foulis, 1914. In a signed morocco binding by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, gilt stamp to front pastedown. With twelve colour illustrated plates tipped in from water colours by Edmund J Sullivan. Lavengro is one of Borrow's best known books. He wrote novels and travelogues based on his experiences travelling around Europe. As a genre, Lavengro falls between a memoir and novel. It has been considered a classic of nineteenth century literature and follows the son of an officer who after serving an apprenticeship as a lawyer, becomes a Grub Street Hack. This allows him to observe London low-life. Throughout the novel the unnamed protagonist meets many Romany travellers, of whom he gives memorable and sympathetic pen-portraits. In a full morocco binding with gilt stamping to board edges and spine. Binder's stamp in gilt to front pastedown, Sangorski and Sutcliffe. Externally, excellent with minor shelfwear and handling marks. Spine has faded slightly, as expected with this colour. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with the some spots to the endpapers and the odd spot throughout. Overall Condition: Fine.
