George Borrow
London, Edinburgh and Boston: T N Foulis, 1914. In a signed morocco binding by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, gilt stamp to front pastedown. With twelve colour illustrated plates tipped in from water colours by Edmund J Sullivan. Lavengro is one of Borrow's best known books. He wrote novels and travelogues based on his experiences travelling around Europe. As a genre, Lavengro falls between a memoir and novel. It has been considered a classic of nineteenth century literature and follows the son of an officer who after serving an apprenticeship as a lawyer, becomes a Grub Street Hack. This allows him to observe London low-life. Throughout the novel the unnamed protagonist meets many Romany travellers, of whom he gives memorable and sympathetic pen-portraits. CONDITION In a full morocco binding with gilt stamping to board edges and spine. Binder's stamp in gilt to front pastedown, Sangorski and Sutcliffe. Externally, excellent with minor shelfwear and handling marks. Spine has faded slightly, as expected with this colour. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with the some spots to the endpapers and the odd spot throughout. Overall Condition: Fine.

Emile Magne
Brussells, Paris: Librairie Nationale d'Art et d'Histoire, G. Van Oest & Cie, 1914. With over 100 illustrations of Poussin's paintings and drawings. Nicolas Poussin, 1594 - 1665, was a French painter in the classical style. His work predominantly features clarity, logic, and order, and favours line over colour. His work serves as an alternative to the dominant Baroque style of the 17th century. Until the 20th century he remained the major inspiration for such classically-oriented artists as Jacques-Louis David and Paul Cezanne. He spent most of his working life in Rome, except for a short period when Cardinal Richelieu ordered him back to France to serve as First Painter to the King. CONDITION Bound in paper-covered boards. Binding is split though this is common with the original paper boards. Pages 81-86, including three plates, and also between 114 to 118, are partially detached. There is some wear to the extremities, including some bumping and rubbing, with the card of the spine split in several places. Internally the pags are generally clean and bright. Overall Condition: Good Only.

Vincent van Gogh
Paul Cassirer In Berlin. some delicate cracking of leather and scuffing but overall in very good condition with many unopened pages Sell all 10 photos. End of Summer sale: I have temporarily lowered the price for my end of Summer sale. IMPORTANT: these two volumes are in German. The German title is: "VINCENT VAN GOGH Briefe an seinen Bruder". Unless special arrangements are made I am only offering these to U.S. Buyers an addresses. But you can make special arrangements by contacting me. The only well documented sale of a painting in Vincent van Gogh's life was The Red Vineyard (a beautiful painting worth looking up). It sold for 400 Francs (about $1,000 today). This was in the last six months of his life. In January of 1889 he writes to his bother Theo: "...my pictures are valueless..." (letter #571 of New York Graphic Society edition). To complicate matters he had formerly worked for the art dealers where Theo works and had a nasty, bitter falling out and as a matter of pride will not consign any of his work to their galleries nor does Vincent believe they would take any. Theo is not permitted to sell art works - such as paintings by is brother - privately as it would be a conflict of interest and could cost him his job. Despite all this, at great financial hardship, Theo, Vincent's younger brother has reached the point of fully supporting Vincent and his art. Week after week, month after month sending Vincent money to live and for art supplies. He did this for years. More than that he has been an unwavering supporter of Vincent's work. This was when Vincent's work, besid … [Click Below for Full Description]

Arthur Conan Doyle
1914. ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE. Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) was a Scottish author whose stories featuring fictional detective Sherlock Holmes revolutionized the genre of crime fiction. Holmes himself would eventually earn a place among the most familiar and durable characters in the annals of English Literature and his exploits would inspire countless incarnations on stage and screen. A DRIED SNOWDROP FLOWER GIFTED BY ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE TO HIS WIFE IN 1914, THE SAME TIME HE COMPLETED AND COPYRIGHTED HIS FOURTH AND FINAL SHERLOCK HOLMES NOVEL A dried Snowdrop flower gifted by Arthur Conan Doyle to his second wife, Jean Elizabeth Leckie (1874-1940), in 1914. This fascinating relic was found inside an envelope (measuring 12mo and in fine condition with minor toning) with an autograph note handwritten in bold black fountain pen ink by Doyle's wife: "Arthur gave me this first snowdrop which he found in the garden today, Dec 19th 1914.". According to the note, this was the first Snowdrop to bloom in the winter season and it came from Doyle's personal garden. When Doyle gifted this flower, he had completed and copyrighted his fourth and final Sherlock Holmes novel The Valley of Fear. THE RELIC WAS FOUND INSIDE AN ENVELOPE WITH A LETTER OF AUTHENTICITY FROM DOYLE'S WIFE, THE HANDWRITING HAS BEEN AUTHENTICATED BY CHRISTIE'S, THE LARGEST AUCTION HOUSE IN THE WORLD The handwriting has been authenticated by and is accompanied with documentation from Christie's, the largest auction house in the world that maintains an entire department devoted to Rare Books and Manuscripts. McClure, S. S.
Frederick A. Stokes. Ghst written by Willa Cather. From the recently auctioned collection of M.B. Goldstone--with his personalized gold bookplate lightly attached to the front pastedown and his penciled signature and notes to the front free endpaper. This copy originally belonged to author, novelist, and short story writer Katherine Havilland Taylor--and attached (tipped in) is a rejection letter from S.S. McClure for a short story Taylor wrote called "How Fickle Women Are". Dated June 8, 1925, and on McClure's Magazine stationary, McClure writes to Taylor--"This is a very good story and I would like it but I am sorry to say I can't buy it, considering what I have on hand." "Faithfully Yours. S. S. McClure". Taylor was a successful short story writer who was published in several magazines, but apparently, never in McClure's. Taylor wrote one novel called "The Failure", which was adapted into a 1938 RKO film with a renamed title of "A Man To Remember"--starring Lionel Barrymore. Taylor had several stories published by all of the major writing magazines of the early part of the 20th Century. Also, enclosed and attached to this copy on page 241, conveniently across from the photo of "Viola Roseboro"--editor in chief of McClure's magazine, is a letter on McClure's Magazine stationary dated December 21, 1922 and also addressed to Taylor, is a rejection letter for a story entitled "Facing Reality" and signed and written by Viola Roseboro with her handwritten notes to Taylor on one side and a formal rejection on the other. In her notes Roseboro says, "Good, only we feel it is more … [Click Below for Full Description]
