EINSTEIN, Albert.
Vieweg & Sohn, Braunschweig. First edition, extremely rare author?s presentation offprint (with ?Überreicht vom Verfasser? (Presented by the Author) printed on front wrapper), and the copy of Einstein?s son Hans Albert, of this crucial transitional paper in which Einstein uses the light quantum hypothesis to give new derivations of Planck's radiation law and Nernst's third law of thermodynamics (Einstein points out that the alleged ?proofs? which try to derive the theorem of Nernst from the mere fact that the specific heat of all substances goes to zero at absolute zero temperature, are not genuine). Einstein had first put forward the idea of light quanta in 1905, but in later years he came to doubt the validity of the hypothesis, despite its earlier success in explaining the photoelectric effect. Einstein?s success in the present paper in deriving two of the most important achievements of quantum theory using the light quantum hypothesis re-established his confidence in that hypothesis, and he began to think again about the interaction between radiation and matter, resulting two years later in his great papers on the quantum theory of radiation. The only other copy we have located in auction records is that in Einstein?s own reference collection of offprints formerly in the Richard Green Library (sold Christie?s New York, 17 June 2008, lot 100). OCLC lists three copies in US (American Philosophical Society, Florida, Princeton), one in UK and one in Switzerland.Provenance: Hans Albert Einstein (1904-1973), Swiss-American engineer and educator, and the second child and first … [Click Below for Full Description]

FRENCH NAVAL TACTICS.)
[Paris: État-Major Général [de la Marine Nationale], 1914. Quarto (272 x 203 mm). Contemporary purple skiver-backed marbled boards, marbled endpapers. Spine discoloured and a little chipped, boards slightly rubbed, contents lightly toned but very good. 11 plates, numerous illustrative diagrams mounted in the text, tables. Chapters tagged with artificial vellum index tags. First edition, designated Confidential and subsequently reclassified as Secret in manuscript, no other copy traced. A detailed handbook of French destroyer tactics which had currency throughout the First World War, corrections of January 1917 and March 1922 noted at the "Fiche des Corrections", and added to the text in red ink. That this was a practical manual rather than a classroom text is indicated by the instructions, not followed in this case, that it should be bound in a double cover of sail cloth with a pocket to each cover to take a lead plate "afin d'assurer la submersion du livre" in the case of shipwreck or "accident." A remarkable document. [Attributes: First Edition]

1914. Fabiani, perhaps best-known as a highly accomplished harpist, was also a composer, pianist, organist, and singing teacher. He is noted among the "prominent names in the harp world at the time of the introduction of the American made harp." Rensch: The Harp, p. 135. The present scrapbook well-documents Fabiani's career in France and England but also in American cities including Chicago, Cincinnati, Detroit, and Washington, as attested to by numerous contemporary newspaper reviews and letters. "Signor Fabiani is [English] by birth... He began the study of music at the age of four, and at eight won his first success in a public concert as a Harp Soloist... His mother was the great Bochsa's favorite pupil... Signor Fabiani was taken early in life by his father to Paris where his real artistic education and best life began. His talent and culture speedily procured him admission into aristocratic, artistic and literary circles generally closed against all foreigners. He became a member of the Imperial Association of French Musical Artists; received a brilliant ovation from the incomparable "Conservatoire Orchestra" at the rehearsal of his Choral Harp Concero (the first ever written since the harp was an instrument) and he produced at the inauguration of Erard's new hall a Choral Orchestral Agnus Dei, dedicated to Meyerbeer, who... introduced him to the German Court, where he became acquainted with Liszt, Heller... and other Masters. During the brilliant reign of Napoleon III, Signor Fabiani was a familiar figure in Paris, where he played at the most distinguished public … [Click Below for Full Description]

Participants in the exhibition included individuals and companies from Scotland, England, France, and Germany The meeting was intended to include a colloquium on the mathematics of computation, but that was canceled because war was considered imminent. A celebration of Napier's pivotal role in the history of calculation, the exhibition featured displays of many different types of calculating machines, as well as exhibits of other aids to calculation such as mathematical tables, the abacus and slide rules, planimeters and other in … [Click Below for Full Description]

Very scarce - * in the Mesopotamia desert to the west of Babylon & the Euphrates; "I have attempted in this book to bring together the materials, so far as they are known, which bear upon the earliest phases of Mohammadan architecture, to consider the circumstances under which it arose and the roots from which it sprang. No development of civilization, or of the arts which serve and adorn civilization, has burst full-fledged from the forehead of the god ; and architecture, which is the first and most permanent of the arts, reflects with singular fidelity the history of its creators. Of these buildings, the most important is the great palace of Ukhaidir on the eastern side of the Syrian desert. I have given, also, the first plans and photographs of three small ruins in its vicinity, Qsair, Mudjdah, and Atshan. If they do not belong to the same period as the palace, they cannot be far removed from it in date. The problems presented by Ukhaidir led me back to Sasanian architecture, and I publish here new plans and photographs of two vast constructions at Qasr-i- Shirin. I have, further, taken this occasion to publish the plans of two mosques, the one at Diyarbekr, the other at Mayafarqin, both of which belong to a later p … [Click Below for Full Description]
