1914. Unbound. Very Good. Gelatin silver image on thick card. Approximately 4.5" x 3.25". A little rubbing along the edges, very good or better. A nice image of 13 young African-American women. In the center of the photo, one woman holds a basketball lettered "B.H.S. 1914." According to the website "The Brooklyn Game" (http://thebrooklyngame.com/brooklyns-first-basketball-team/): "Brooklyn was home to a historic basketball first, way back in 1906, when the Smart Set Athletic Club of Brooklyn, an African American social and sports organization, launched the first formally organized and independently run all-black basketball team... [they] played their first game in 1907 as part of a dynamic all-black Olympian Athletic League." The article also mentions: "Like many Black Fives Era men's basketball teams, the Smart Set Athletic Club had a sister team called the Spartan Girls Athletic Club. The Spartan Girls were one of America's first all-black women's basketball teams." According to the Black Fives Foundation, dedicated to the history of African-Americans in basketball: "...the very first all-black female basketball team - the New York Girls (1910-1914), champions of New York and New Jersey in 1910! There were dozens of other early African American women's teams, including the Spartan Girls (1910-1914)... ." We have had in inventory a 1907 photograph of a black women's team, this image is seven years later, and is just four years later than the image that had previously been considered the earliest known image of a black women's basketball team. A complete set of bound Punch Almanack volumes, 1914 to 1950. Covering for me the "Fougasse" period. I only purchased these for the superb cartoons by " Fougasse " Cyril Kenneth Bird. I have now managed to obtain all the cartoons separately so no longer require these full volumes so they are up for grabs. Downsizing is such a pain! Some are whole years others half yearly. I will not sell them individually, sorry. Various bound cover colours - please see photographs of the volumes. Used condition so will carry marks from storage and wear commensurate with age. Due to size of collection and weight - collection only or possible delivery to be discussed. Thank you for looking - any questions please feel free to ask.

OXFORD: CLARENDON PRESS, 1914 FIRST EDITION, folio (330 x 244mm.), half-title, 2 maps, 93 plates and plans, a few folding, illustrations in text, modern cloth, top edge gilt. Text and plates very clean, no foxing, slight bumping to top right of text block, small handwritten label on bottom of plates 92/93, plate 93 with small repaired tear not affecting image, all photographic and folding plates present. Very rare. Gertrude Bell frequently combined her desert travels with archaeological exploration and archaeology became increasingly important to her. She spent a great deal of time recording the sites she visited, with photography as well as drawings, plans and descriptions in her notebooks. She knew or worked with many of the leading archaeologists in the Middle East and was committed to preserving the heritage of Iraq. She spent time with Sir Leonard Woolley at the ancient site of Ur where they went through the finds together and decided what was to remain in Iraq and what was to be allowed to go to the British Museum in London. Gertrude's first love remained archaeology and, as Honorary Director of Antiquities in Iraq, she established the Iraq Museum in Baghdad and wrote the Antiquities legislation for Iraq. Gertrude took important photographs during seven months based in Jerusalem in 1900 . Her 1905 expedition through the Syrian Desert to Asia Minor was published as The Desert and the Sown and as short papers in the journal … [Click Below for Full Description]

WOMEN’S SUFFRAGE IN IOWA

Preston, January 19, 1914, Des Moines, Iowa. 2 pp.WILLIAM S. ALLEN. Typed Letter Signed, as Iowa's Secretary of State, to Dr. Charles H. Preston, January 26, 1914, Des Moines, Iowa. 1 p. Complete TranscriptsFlora E. Dunlap to Charles H. Preston, on Iowa Equal Suffrage Association Letterhead, January 19, 1914My dear Dr. Preston, A bill granting suffrage passed the last Legislature and we hope of course that it will pass again next year. If it does then the matter will be voted upon at the next general election. There has been a state organization as I said since 1871, the present officers names are at the head of this sheet. Mrs Mary J Coggeshall was perhaps the most prominent and most active of any worker and was president of the state organization for many years. Mrs Belden of Sioux City was identified with the work for some years, Mrs Calanan of Des Moines and Mrs Eliza J Hunter of Des Moines. The state organization has now about fifteen hundred members not a large number of course and thirty five affiliated organizations thro the state. While Iowa was one of the earliest states to begin an agitation for the cause we have not had such large numbers of clubs or so many members as in some other states organized later. Iowa laws are on the whole quite fair to women which has been perhaps partly the reason. In the last two years there seems to have been a revival … [Click Below for Full Description]

New Milford, New Jersey, 1914. Softcover. Very Good. Quarto. Measuring 9" x 12". 94pp. Approximately 6000 words written in English with French translations. Handmade brown paper travel journal with "The Log of the Bungaloafers" written on the front wrapper. Some of the pages are detached but present with tiny tears and creasing on the edges, very good with clear intact handwriting. A handmade paper journal detailing the daily events of a group of women traveling together in 1914. The journal is titled, "The Log of the Bungaloafers," a tongue-in-cheek name given to the group of women. The women on the trip are listed as "Dramatic Personae," for the characters they play and are mentioned only by their nicknames throughout the album including Boss, Orphan, Fashion Plate, Always Present in Meals, Perpetual Motions, Household Darling, Queen of Movies, Professor of French, Watchman, and Grumpy. Included with the nicknames are small caricatures of each person. The women are traveling from New York City to New Milford, New Jersey to spend time together around the town and exploring forest trails and lakes in the area. Each day has a description, sometimes translated into French, of what is happening, explaining the weather of the day, and a line or so for each person on how they're feeling or what they are doing: "Robbed the library of a few of its worst choice books." Also included is a handwritten and signed letter from 1895 written by Jane Cunningham Croly, a journalist, women's rights activist, and founder of the General Federation of Women's Clubs in New York City. The lett … [Click Below for Full Description]
