Vibert.

Paris: Georges Crès et Cie, les Maitres du Livre, 30 March 1914 - Octavo. Finely bound by Cochard in near-contemporary green crushed morocco, spine in compartments with raised bands and title gilt direct, gilt-tooled turn-ins, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt. With the original wrappers bound in. Spine sunned, bound-in wrappers a little marked, excellent condition. Frontispiece illustration in two states, one on thick plate, the other on chartreuse paper. First edition, first printing, copy 112 of 112 copies on papier vergé chartreuse, from an edition of 1,075 copies in total. This copy, with the original chartreuse wrappers bound in, has been handsomely bound by Cochard. Gourmont's "Letters to the Amazon" are the result of the symbolist poet, who had been stricken and disfigured by lupus vulgaris, meeting in 1910, and for four years corresponding intensely and devotedly with, the "Amazon" of Paris, Natalie Clifford Barney (1876-1972), one of the most influential lesbian and feminist writers of the period. Her life inspired Radclyffe Hall's The Well of Loneliness, and her Paris salon at 20 rue Jacob was for 60 years the crucible of Left Bank culture (guests included Colette, Pierre Louÿs, Mata Hari, Auguste Rodin, Ezra Pound, Jean Cocteau, T. S. Eliot, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Rainer Maria Rilke, Rabindranath Tagore, Nancy Cunard, Peggy Guggenheim, Caresse and Harry Crosby, Sylvia Beach, and Isadora Duncan, to name but few). Barney promoted women's writing and formed an Académie des femmes in response to the all-male Académie française, while also supporting and inspiring male writers such as Gourmont. These letters are a classic of French literature, and were much reprinted - this however is the scarce first edition in the alluring chartreuse issue. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Snapshot Album.

Alexandria, 1914. - 40 photographs. Slightly larger or smaller than 100 x 70 mm. One photo (230 x 150 mm) laid in. Brief captions inked beneath almost all of the photos. Album made of thin flexible card. 4to. The compiler appears to have resided at 1 Rue Rosette. Some of the photos were apparently taken from his balcony which according to one of the photos must have been slightly up the other side of a street from the Mohamed-Aly Club. Some of the photos show the interior of the compilers residence (entrance hall, salon, porcelain cabinets). The large photo probably shows the compiler and his bride emerging from their wedding and passing under upraised sticks held by young soldiers or older Boy Scouts. - Some fading. Cover chipped around edges and creased.

Original red cloth, titles to upper board and spine gilt.Light scorch-marks too endpapers from a former "protector", spine very gently rolled and showing some very typical fading but all in all a very decent, very honest copy indeed. With the armorial bookplate to the front pastedown of John Wynford, whilst still Baron St Davids. Wynford, soldier and parliamentarian, was elevated to Viscount in 1918. Since his later bookplates record this preferment, we can be confident that Wynford was the primary owner. Unsophisticated copies in presentable condition are uncommon, examples with secure early provenance even more so.[29]

        Omar Khayyam.

Cambridge: Galloway & Porter, 1914 - Large octavo. Original black cloth, titles and decoration gilt to spine and front cover, top edge gilt. Very slight bronzing to some of the titles on the front cover, some trivial rubbing to the ends and corners, some very mild marks to cloth, internally sound and fresh, an excellent copy. Illustrated title, 15 plates with text and illustration, 15 plates with illustration and captioned tissue guards. First Sett edition, one of 250 copies printed, of this scarce privately printed Rubaiyat illustrated by Parsee artist Mera Ben Kavas Sett. In his lengthy foreword Sett stakes his claim that his Rubaiyat "is original in being the interpretation of a Persian (Parsee)", and also notes that "Some of the English publishers found the work "too shocking" and "one likely to hurt the susceptibility of the decent-minded English people". They were ready to bring out my Omar if I changed a few pictures at their dictate and tastes, but I would not so much as a single line or a dot. It seems the English (according to the publishers) would rather have the conventional fig-leaf than a cluster of roses. I stated my case to my generous father. With his usual kindness and generosity, he offered to stand the piper to the tune of a private publication." Sett's Omar made sufficient impression to receive the encomium of Rupert Brooke (who died early in 1915): "If Mr Sett has not been universally acclaimed as the greatest draughtsman and decorator living, the fault lies with his own exclusive and publicity shunning nature. His Omar will have the pride of place in my library". [Attributes: First Edition]

Das schmerzliche Meer. Frühe und neue Gedichte.

Erste Ausgabe. (Vgl. Thomas Rietzschel. In: Walter Rheiner. Kokain. Lyrik, Prosa, Briefe. Leipzig 1985, S. 285-303.) - Einbandkanten stark berieben, Bll. teils stockfleckig. - Raabe/Hannich-B. 245. 3. - Jentsch 40.

        La Vénerie Française Contemporaine

Adolph de Goupy, 1914. Half folio Profusely illustrated with in text drawings and music scores, frontispiece and numerous full page plates in colour original green cloth lettered in gilt, front cover with padded design of deer head with antlers in brown and cream, gilt medallion of fox at top, lettered in gilt on spine La Vénerie Française Contemporaine is a famous and important book of the twentieth century about hunting in France. It gives a comprehensive overview of the French Hunts, which were then at their peak. The text is filled with anecdotes and, often amusing, comments. The individuals portrayed are identified by handwritten notes that the author had left in his own copy (not present here). Baron Karl Reille (1886 - 1975) was the great grandson of Honore Reille, Marshal of France, who had married the daughter of [Andre] Massena [the great Marshall under Napoleon, and perhaps the only possible rival to him]. Karl Reille had a happy childhood, divided between Paris and the Chateau de Baudry in Touraine, in the period preceding World War I. Reillee had shown at an early age a talent for art and design and his uncle Peter Verteville was his guide in developing these talents. They worked in an artistic affinity and often treated the same subject identically. In 1906 they produced jointly a series of portraits and caricatures of actors The Vénérie Montpoupon. A passion for hunting with hounds ultimately determined where the talent of Karl Reille should be directed and bore fruit in the publishing in 1914 of Vénérie Francaise Contemporaine. This important work presents all the hunts existing in France at the time, with each hunt illustrated by the author, and also its hunting song musically notated. Throughout his prolific career, Reille illustrated many books written by other authors about hunting. He also looked closely at the world of horses and horse racing which were his constant inspiration. Mobilized in 1914, he was taken prisoner early in the war. He spent four years in captivity at Plassenburg Ingolstadt in Bavaria. After the war, in 1922, Karl Reille created in association with the Baron de Lauriston, Rally Gaiment, a hunt for deer. In April 1924, Karl Reille married Odette Goury of Roslan, and they had six children. In 1939 he enlisted again at the outbreak of war, and was again taken prisoner by the Germans. Released in 1941, he returned to Baudry and became mayor of his town, Cerelles, at the end of the war. After the armistice, he was vice-president of the Society Vénérie. Having previously painted in watercolour and gouache, Reille worked in oil from 1960 on. He was struck by disease in 1973, and died in 1975 Minor silverfishing to green cloth, else a fine copy One of 600 copies, "No. ASH for Mr. H. Tiffany underwrote the costs of this large expensive production, and presented it to wealthy clients and friends. According to Robert Koch, a Tiffany authority, "Tiffany's next move was to launch something of a more enduring, yet subtly instructive, nature. This was the completion of a memorial volume, which was, in fact, still another piece of shrewd promotion. [The text was written by] Charles de Kay, based on a series of personal interviews. Tiffany himself wrote the table of contents.
