Po gornoi Bukharie. putevye ocherki [In the mountains of Bukhara. Travel Stories].

St Petersburg: M. Stasulevich, 1914 - Octavo (240 × 162 mm). Contemporary tan morocco-backed brown linen boards, title gilt direct to spine, grey patterned endpapers. A little rubbed at the extremities, light browning, a couple of underlinings in the text, private library stamp to verso of the rear free endpaper. 2 plates, numerous illustrations to the text. First edition. In 1906 Alexksay Vasilievich Nechayev (1864–1915), a paleontologist and geologist from Kazan, made a trip into the Bukhara for the purposes of a scientific survey. However, the present work is his account of the everyday life and traditions of the local people in this isolated locale. The expedition extended into the mountainous areas of Bukhara that had previously not been visited by Russians. Nechaev recounts local legends, the folk tales of the gold-miners, and regional customs and living conditions, at the same time offering descriptions of the stunning landscapes along the way. Nachayev is best known for his pioneering work on the stratigraphy and paleontology of Paleogene sediments of the Volga Region and Upper-Permian rocks of the eastern and north-eastern European part of Russia. Uncommon, OCLC lists just three locations. [Attributes: First Edition]

        Autograph Letter Signed

1914. Signed. PATTON, George S. Autograph Letter Signed. Pride's Crossing, [Massachusetts]: [August 1914]. One leaf of ""Avalon, Pride's Crossing"" stationery, folded once to make four pages, 5 by 6-3/4 inches, written on three pages. $6500.Revealing three-page autograph letter signed by 28-year-old Second Lieutenant George S. Patton, Jr., to his mother, telling her that retiring Army Chief of Staff Gen. Leonard Wood told him that if he is sent to Europe as an observer during the World War, he will take Patton with him. Noting that this information is a secret and should not be mentioned, he goes on to write that if General Wood does not go, ""I will go any way for this may be the last war and I want to get in one at least.""This letter, on ""Avalon. Pride's Crossing"" stationery to Patton's mother in San Gabriel, California, reads in full: ""Dear Mama: As I suppose you are quite excited over my last letter I hasten to tell you that I have not left yet. I went to N.Y. Sunday and saw Gen. [Leonard] Wood and asked him about granting a leave he said it was possible but asked that I wait two weeks by that time he will know whether or not he is going as an observer and if he goes he will try to take me with him. The fact of his going and of his taking me are both secrets so do not mention them. ""If he does not go I will go any way for this may be the last war and I want to get in one at least. I am going up to Conn Wed to act as G.W's aid at a little camp for two days. Maj. Marshall will be there. I have been playing polo and hunting so have had a fine time. All are well. With much love your devoted son, George S. Patton Jr.""On September 23, 1913, Second Lieutenant George S. Patton, Jr. had reported to the Mounted Service School in Fort Riley, Kansas, where he became the school's first Master of the Sword. He designed and taught a course in swordsmanship while he was a student at the school until his graduation in June 1915. Avalon was the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Ayer, the parents of George S. Patton, Jr.'s wife Beatrice, in Pride's Crossing, a seaside village near Beverly Massachusetts. Between his terms in the Mounted Service School in Fort Riley, Kansas, as both student and top fencing instructor, Patton was visiting his in-laws.On July 1, 1914, Major General Leonard Wood, retiring as Chief of Staff of the Army, had assumed command of the Department of the East with headquarters on Governor's Island in New York harbor. The Hartford Courant reported on Friday, August 14, 1914, that Wood was on his way to Hampton, Connecticut, to a joint camp of instruction for cavalry. Faintest soiling and fold lines.         Omar Khayyam illustrated by Mera K. Sett.

Cambridge, Privately printed & published by Galloway & Porter. 1914 - One of only 250 copies printed. 8°. 5 nn. pages, illustrated titlepage, 15 unnumbered full-page, illustrations, 15 full-page illustrations with titled tissue-guards. Original, illustrated Hardcover (black cloth with gilt lettering on spine and cover). Excellent condition with only minor signs of external wear. One corner stronger bumped. Interior in excellent condition with some minor traces of foxing. Extraordinary publication, highly underestimated in its originality of erotical illustrations in Beardsley-style. The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám is the title that Edward FitzGerald gave to his translation of a selection of poems, originally written in Persian and numbering about a thousand, attributed to Omar Khayyám (1048–1131), a Persian poet, mathematician and astronomer. A ruba'i is a two-line stanza with two parts (or hemistichs) per line, hence the word rubáiyát (derived from the Arabic language root for "four"), meaning "quatrains". (Wikipedia) In 1914, the Indian artist Mera K. Sett published his illustrated edition of The Rubaiyat. It was privately printed and published by Galloway and Porter of Cambridge, in a limited edition of 250 copies. On the second page of his Foreword, Sett tells us that some English publishers found the naked figures in his work too shocking and considered that they were likely to offend the sensibilities of "decent-minded English people." Since Sett refused to make them decent by adding strategically placed fig-leaves, publication was eventually financed by his father.         Mr Justice Precedent. 21" x 15-1/2" gouache image on 26" x 19-1/2"

1914 - "His Famous Wig Composed Entirely of Split Hairs and Adorned with the Ceremonial Crimson Tape" Robinson, Boardman [1876-1952]. [Becker-Rosenthal Murder Trial]. Mr. Justice Precedent. [New York, 1914]. 21" x 15-1/2" gouache image on 26" x 19-1/2" sheet, image signed twice and inscribed by Robinson, caption in pencil below image, most likely in another hand, laid down on illustration board. Image in 30-1/2" x 24" wooden frame, glazed. Light soiling, a few minor stains and four crop-marks to margins outside of image, which could be covered with a matte, image fine. Several minor scuffs and nicks to frame. A unique item relating to a notable trial. * This piece was created to illustrate "Leaden Footed Justice in New York State," an article that appeared in the Special Feature Section of the New York Tribune on Sunday, March 1, 1914. The caption reads: "Mr. Justice Precedent wearing his famous wig composed entirely of split hairs and adorned with the ceremonial crimson tape." The caption refers to the protracted nature of the Becker-Rosenthal Murder case, which began on October 7, 1912, restarted on May 2, 1914 and finally concluded after a series of procedural events in 1915. The case involved a group of corrupt police offices led by Charles Becker who ran a protection racket on illegal casinos. Becker hired gangsters to kill a casino owner, and rival gangster, who was threatening to expose the racket. A breathtaking example of police corruption, the investigation and trial was front-page news in New York for months. In the end Becker was sent to the electric chair at Sing Sing. (This was the first time a police officer received the death penalty). The case lived on for several years in the popular imagination; it is mentioned, for example, by Meyer Wolfsheim in The Great Gatsby (1925). Robinson, the creator of this illustration, was a distinguished artist, illustrator and cartoonist. A native of Nova Scotia, he studied art in Boston and completed his training in Paris at the Academie Colarossi and the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, both in Paris. "Mr. Justice Precedent" shows his affinity, acquired in Paris, for the work of Daumier, Forain and Steinlen. Robinson produced work for several newspapers and periodicals. He created "Mr. Justice Precedent" when he was an editorial cartoonist for the

Typed Letter, Signed, to Lippmann, June 10, 1914.

1914 - Friendly Letter from Hand to Walter Lippmann Regarding Socialism and the (Often Dreary) Life of a Judge Hand, Learned [1872-1961]. [Lippmann, Walter (1889-1974)]. [Typed Letter, Signed, To Lippmann, On U.S. District Court Letterhead, June 10, 1914]. Two 10-1/2" x 8" sheets. Some toning, fold lines, two vertical and one horizontal, a few minor corrections by Hand, letter signed L.H. * A friendly letter from one of the most significant American jurists of the twentieth century to one of its most influential journalists. Hand, a judge of the U.S. Southern District of New York, later a judge of the Court of Appeals, Second Circuit, was renowned for his judgments, which were also admired for their lucidity and elegance. Lippmann, a writer, reporter, editor and syndicated political commentator, was a highly influential figure in political life and one of the first to introduce the concept of the Cold War. In this letter Hand touches on social matters, mentioning that "Felix [Frankfurter] is back in town," and laments, humorously, the drudgery faced by judges, "most of whose living hours are consumed in reading testimony. I now see why people in former times went to such extravagances in telling judges what great men they were. If they had not baited the hook in some such way the poor suckers would never have bitten." He also teases Lippmann for joining the Socialist Party and defends his allegiance to Progressivism: "I do not like your political sneers and I do not think they are sincere. My Progressive flag is nailed to the mast and I propose to play the Star Spangled Banner while the ship sinks. My position in the band is to beat the bass drum softly. I don't know what position you have in the Socialist Party; I suspect it is in the last line of the water carriers, with a distinct tendency to desert, at that." As the tone of this letter indicates, Hand and Lippmann were good friends, and would remain so until Hand's death in 1961. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Kaloma - Canvas Art Print

Good. Canvas art print of the legendary and mysterious "Kaloma," which features a risqué image of a beautiful woman posing in a sheer gauze peignoir. This print is in color. Print has moderate soil to bottom half and is slightly worn where wooden frame meets canvas. There are three small cracks near image of woman but do not affect content. Wooden frame is in good condition but has light soiling and is somewhat rough on the back. In 1914 this image was on the cover of "Kaloma, Valse Hesitante" composed by Gire Goulineaux, hence the image name "Kaloma." It was also published as an art print by both Pastime Novelty Company and ABC Novelty Company out of New York in 1914 and became very popular. Its popularity resurfaced in the 1960's and again in the 1970's when Glenn Boyer's book "I Married Wyatt Earp" featured the image on the dust cover. Many believe that the woman in the photograph was actress and dancer, Josephine Sarah Marcus Earp, the wife of famed gunslinger Wyatt Earp, but this identification is still controversial. The original photograph was said to have been taken in the 1880's but again this is debated. Although the origin and subject is controversial, the popularity of this bold image is unquestionable. ; Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall .

Manuscript Account of 1914 Lima Military Coup

var: n.p., 1914. Hardcover. Very good. The author took with him in 1914 a copy of the first edition of Ernest Peixotto's "Pacific Shores from Panama" on a trip to South America. In it he recorded a diary of his trip, and inserted photographs he took along the way. Then, in Lima, he writes: "7 A.M. Feb. 4th. .. The revolution broke at 4a.m. this morning. The Palace across the Plaza was taken after an hour and a half of rifle and Gatlin gun fire... and so he fills a page with his impressions of the scene. Guillermo Billinghurst was overthrown on February 4, 1914, in a military coup headed by colonel Oscar R. Benavides, Javier and Manuel Prado, and conservatives members of the Civilista Party. "Feb. 5th ... The President was seized + thrown into prison, his only loyal officer the Minister of War was killed..." Nearly all of the photographs are filled on their backs with descriptions; most are of a travelogue type, but some are of the coup. On one of a soldier standing before dead bodies, "The soldier ... was undecided whether to chase me or have his 'picture tuk'. Vanity won..." Book is worn and shaken; sold for the diary and photographs, many of which were tipped to the pages of the book. The name is taken from the owner's signature on the first page of the Preface; but the last name is a trifle indistinct and may be Cockran or something similar. All photographs are signed with "W.S.C."

The Fair Ladies Of The Winter Palace

London - Holden & Hardingham 1914 - A first edition of this salacious history of the Imperial Russianwomen, from their seclusion in the 17th century to their extravagant domestic dominion in the 19th. The author protests in the preface that he is not writing merely for the gratification of the prurient, but also has endeavoured to acquaint the reader with the history of woman in Russia. Illustrated with 16 plates showing the portraits of his subjects as well as a frontispiece. An interesting work precisely because of thetime of its publication;it was to turn out to be the very twighlight of that corrupt dynasty, and this work is excellent evidence for how theRussian monarchywas perceived abroad in that moment. Condition: In a full crushed morocco Asprey binding. Externally lovely with almost no discernible wear. Internally, clean and bright and firmly bound. Overall: FINE [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
