        The Master of the World

London - Sampson Low, Marston and Co., Ltd., 1914 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A scarce first UK edition of Jules Verne's dark science fiction novel. In good order, and a particularly clean copy -this work is notorious for heavy foxing due to the paper used. This is one of the last novels by French pioneer science fiction writer, Jules Verne, and is a sequel to Robur the Conqueror. At the time Verne wrote the novel, his health was failing, and Master of the World is a black novel, filled with the fear of the coming of tyrants like the novel's villain, Robur, and totalitarianism. With a colourfully illustrated front board and spine, showing the Terror. With numerous illustrations by Georges Roux. Condition: Inoriginal pictorial cloth coveredbinding. Externally, sound with slight shelfwear and bumping to extremities. Slight straining to front hinge. Internally, generally firmly bound. Closed tear to gutter of one page. Generally bright with the odd spot and handling mark, mostly to first and last few pages. Overall: VERY GOOD.

Royal Commission on Indian Finance and Currency, 1914, Final Report of the Commissioners,

Final Report of the Commissioners, Presented to both Houses of Parliament by Command of His Majesty, 91pp, HMSO, 1914 [Cd. 7236] This includes the substantial "Annexe to Report of Royal Commission on Indian Finance and Currency, Memorandum by Mr J. M. KEYNES on Proposals for the Establishment of a State Bank in India," p.58-87, in the original blue paper printed wrappers, a very good clean copy. * Keynes was invited to sit on this commission at the same time as his own first book, Indian Finance and Currency, (1913) was published; he feared a conflict of interest but in fact his books was seen as a major qualification. Indian currency had been a vexed question ever since bimetallism was abandoned in 1873. Keynes had a two-fold task; he had to convince the Commission of his view, already expressed in his book, that actual developments had been in the right direction and that the system known as the gold-exchange standard was superior to the full gold-standard. His second task was to procure a distinct advantage by establishing a State Bank. The Commission assigned to Sir Ernest Cable and Keynes the task of preparing the draft proposal. Keynes had some consultations with Cable, but it seems that he did the main part of the work himself which was published as an Annexe to the final Report, and it received an encouraging response in the Report itself. The Annexe gave Keynes the scope to elaborate more fully than ever before his ideas of currency management. He argued that it would be desirable to develop in India a more extended money market and bank-rate control. Marshall was full of praise: [it is] a prodigy of constructive work... we old men will have to hang ourselves if young people [like Keynes] can cut their way so straight and with such apparent ease through such difficulties." see Harrod, Life of John Maynard Keynes, pp.164-71. This report is both important and rare.
