        Dubliners

London: Grant Richards, (1914). Octavo. First edition. One of approximately 746 copies that were bound. When Joyce first submitted his proposal for this collection of short stories, he wrote, "I do not think that any writer has yet presented Dublin to the world." However, Joyce was far from sentimental about the city, writing, "From time to time I see in publisher's lists announcements of books on Irish subjects so that I think people might be willing to pay for the special odour of corruption which, I hope, floats over my stories." Bound in publisher's red cloth with gilt lettering on front cover and spine. Front free endpaper lacking. Faint waterstaining to bottom and top edges of pages, as well as top corner of rear pastedown, that does not affect the inside of the book. Top and bottom edges of spine slightly bumped, spine darkened with some slight rubbing, and faint rubbing to spine edges. Very small, shallow spot of biopredation to front board; still a very good copy of a scarce book. Bookplate of American diplomat and poet John Haven Ferguson.

The Prussian Officer and Other Stories

London: Duckworth 1914 - Physical desc.: 310 p. 19 cm. Subject: England -- Social life and customs -- 20th century -- Fiction. Short stories in English, 1900-1945 - Texts. Summary: His first published collection, these twelve stories were written between 1907 and 1914, during a crucial period of development for Lawrence from which he emerged a leading figure of the modernist movement. Reaching new levels of feeling and experience, these stories range from the tale of a Prussian officer who drives his orderly towards a bloody reckoning, to the strangely exotic elements of 'A Fragment of Stained Glass', and the divisions within society and conflicts of the heart that form the central themes of 'Daughters of a Vicar'. Interweaving individual lives, their happiness, failures and defeats, with the profound forces of nature, Lawrence has created stories of remarkable power and sensitivity. Notes: A rare copy of the 1st edition - 1st issue December 1914. Dark blue cloth with 15 pages of publisher's adverts at rear. Referenced by NCBEL iv, 382 Roberts A6 state 1. Very good copy in the original gilt-blocked blind-bordered dark blue cloth stamped in gold. Slightest suggestion only of dust-dulling to the spine bands and panel edges. Remains particularly well-preserved overall; tight, bright, clean and strong. Blind-tooled stamp to rear board. Additional scans upon request. 1 Kg. 310 pp. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Offprint, the Royal Society, London, [1928], 3 pp. Folded leaf as issued, margins soiled. <br><br> FIRST EDITIONS of 3 rare offprints. "Pavlov contributed to many areas of physiology and neurological sciences. Most of his work involved research in temperament, conditioning and involuntary reflex actions. Pavlov performed and directed experiments on digestion, eventually publishing The Work of the Digestive Glands in 1897, after 12 years of research. His experiments earned him the 1904 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine. These experiments included surgically extracting portions of the digestive system from animals, severing nerve bundles to determine the effects, and implanting fistulas between digestive organs and an external pouch to examine the organ&#39;s contents. This research served as a base for broad research on the digestive system ... The concept for which Pavlov is famous is the "conditioned reflex" ... As Pavlov&#39;s work became known in the West, particularly through the writings of John B. Watson, the idea of "conditioning" as an automatic form of learning became a key concept in the developing specialism of comparative psychology, and the general approach to psychology that underlay it, behaviorism. Pavlov&#39;s work with classical conditioning was of huge influence to how humans perceive themselves, their behavior and learning processes and his studies of classical conditioning continue to be central to modern behavior therapy."         Tactique des Torpilleurs d&#39;Escadre

[Paris: État-Major Général [de la Marine Nationale],, 1914. Quarto (272 × 203 mm). Contemporary purple skiver-backed marbled boards, marbled endpapers. 11 plates, numerous illustrative diagrams mounted in the text, tables. Chapters tagged with artificial vellum index tags. Spine discoloured and a little chipped, boards slightly rubbed, contents lightly toned but very good. First edition, designated Confidential and subsequently reclassified as Secret in manuscript, no other copy traced. A detailed handbook of French destroyer tactics which had currency throughout the First World War, corrections of January 1917 and March 1922 noted at the "Fiche des Corrections", and added to the text in red ink. That this was a practical manual rather than a classroom text is indicated by the instructions, not followed in this case, that it should be bound in a double cover of sail cloth with a pocket to each cover to take a lead plate "afin d&#39;assurer la submersion du livre" in the case of shipwreck or "accident." A remarkable document.

THE ADVENTURES OF KATHLYN (Signed By Cast & Crew)

Indianapolis: Bobbs, Merrill, 1914. MacGrath, Harold. THE ADVENTURES OF KATHLYN. Indianapolis: Bobbs-Merrill, (1914). First Edition, preceding all others, and one of the most important photoplay editions ever produced in terms of historical significance: The Kathlyn Williams Deluxe Edition, limited to 100 copies of which this is #55. It has been signed by the entire creative team for the 1913 film (serial drama) which invented the "Cliffhanger," a plot device which remains one of the most important structural innovations in the history of cinematic story-telling. Signed by Harold MacGrath (author). William Nicholas aka W. N. Selig (Producer) and Francis J. Grandon (director). Also signed by Kathlyn Williams (the star) and co-stars Charles Clary, Thomas Santschi, and Gilson Willets. Virtually a who&#39;s who of silent cinema. Before producer Grandin&#39;s death in 1929, he had directed 111 films. MacGrath was a prolific novelist and was the first author to conceive of the notion of releasing a book in tandem with a film. W. N. Selig&#39;s Polyscope Company produced over one THOUSAND films and was honored with his Hollywood Walk of Fame star as one of the most important pioneers of cinema. Kathlyn Williams was a blonde beauty who appeared in 175 silent films. This edition was produced in a special roan leather binding with gilt lettering, top edge gilt, and 16 gorgeous tipped-in full page illustrations from the film. Although our copy has chipping to the tip of the spine and general edge-wear, it is otherwise in excellent condition and the contents (including stills) remain fresh and bright. . First Edition.         The Viceregal Visit to Jodhpur

Bombay: Vernon & Co., , 1914. Landscape folio (490 × 375 mm) red morocco album, elaborately gilt on the upper board with title as above, the arms of the Marwar Durbar, or Darbar, the regional administrative body of Jodhpur; and the Star of India, all within ornate panelling with scrolled foliate corner pieces, the panelling repeated on the lower board. Around 85 silver gelatin prints, various formats up to 365 × 280 mm, mounted on card leaves, two panoramas - a three-part view of the city, and a two-part view of the crowds outside the city awaiting the Viceroy&#39;s arrival. All tissue-guarded, the guards having the studio&#39;s blind-stamps. Just a little rubbed externally, but a very handsome piece in excellent state of preservation. Superb album commemorating the visit of Sir Charles Hardinge, 1st Baron Hardinge of Penshurst, Viceroy of India 1910-16, to Jodhpur in 1914. The album contains an excellent range of views and portraits, including a fine studio portrait of the young Maharaja Sumer Singh; formal group portraits with the viceroy, Lady Hardinge and Sir Pratap Singh; views of the palace, Mehrangarh Fort, troop reviews, and the inauguration of the Powlett Nobles&#39; and Elgin Rajput School by the viceroy and his wife. Hardinge&#39;s tenure was one of significant achievements: the visit of King-Emperor George V for the Delhi durbar of 1911, and the transfer of the capital from Calcutta to New Delhi in 1912. Although his handling of Indian troops in World War I has been criticised, and he was also the subject of several assassination attempts by Indian nationalists, overall his viceroyalty was marked by an amelioration of relations between the British administrators and the Indians.

MOTHER EARTH: VOL. XI, NO. 6, AUGUST 1914 - WITH A COVER BY MAN RAY

(MAN RAY) (MOTHER EARTH). Goldman, Emma & Alexander Berkman, Editors. MOTHER EARTH: VOL. XI, NO. 6, AUGUST 1914 - WITH A COVER BY MAN RAY. New York: Mother Earth Publishing Association, 1914. First Edition. 8vo. Stapled Illustrated Wrappers. Periodical. Good. 32pp, printed by letterpress, no illustrations. Cover by Man Ray. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. "Mother Earth" was legendary New York-based leftist Emma Goldman&#39;s "monthly magazine devoted to Social Science and Literature". This August 1914 issue is important for its use of a drawing by the then-twenty-four year old Man Ray to illustrate the cover - one year prior to his first one man exhibition. Predating his self-published "Ridgefield Gazook" of 1915, this may very well be the first appearance of the work of the renowned Dada and Surrealist pioneer in print. It depicts the body of "Humanity" being grasped and torn between the twin-headed beast of "Government" and "Capitalism", in keeping with the magazine&#39;s labor-supportive editorial stance. The other contributors to the issue are Goldman herself, Adolf Wolff, Charles A. Breckenridge, Gustav Herve, Enrico Malatesta, Alexander Berkman, Leonard D. Abbott, Perry E. McCullough, and Charles T. Sprading. A most presentable copy of this exceedingly uncommon item showing overall light age-toning, wear and handling, a slight dent through the textblock at lower foredge corner, and some chipping with a tiny bit of paper loss to its brittle, highly-acidic wrappers. In addition, it bears the vintage stamp of San Francisco&#39;s Book Omnorium in black ink on the front cover. Still in all, this is a sound, age-appropriate example of this little-known American proto-Modernist document that looks much nicer in hand than it describes. It has been priced accordingly. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase.         Typed letter signed.

New York, 16. III. 1914. - Large 4to. 1½ pp. on 2 ff. On headed paper. To John Henderson, Secretary of the National Liberal Club: "I find that the Whitsuntide Holidays will be on when we arrive in London, via Plymouth, Saturday the thirtieth of May, and that Parliament will not assemble until the tenth of June. Because of this I had concluded you would not desire to hav[e] the address delivered until the holidays were over, but on re-reading your letter this morning it shows that you accept for the beginning of June. I hav[e] accepted two other banquet engagements in London early in June: one to attend the Annual Dinner of the Aberdeen University Club, of which University I am Lord Rector, and the other dinner in honor of the veteran of the House, Thomas Burt, who has had a wonderful career. I could not do otherwise than accept this, feeling as I do about him. The question is, would it be more desirable to you to hav[e] me make the address after Parliament meets, or do you prefer to hav[e] the address made the first, second or third of June? In the former case I would go direct to Skibo, and return to keep the three engagements named [.]".

        Home Rule for Ireland

England, ca. 1914. (IRELAND) Original oil painting on canvas, unsigned, with caricatures of Asquith, John Redmond and Lloyd George, 19 1/2 x 30 inches, framed in gilt to 22 1/2 x 32 1/2 inches overall. Fine condition. Roy Jenkins, Asquith, pp. 174-5, et seq . A British political comment on the issue of Home Rule for Ireland. Amid celestial clouds a Union Jack-garbed figure of H.H. Asquith turns a grindstone on which a gleeful John Redmond in satanic wings sharpens a sword lettered "HOME RULE" as an angelic David Lloyd George flies away carrying by the coattails a small Irishman, shillelagh in hand. Prime Minister Asquith introduced the Third Home Rule for Ireland Bill to the Commons in 1912, in part to oblige the Irish, on which his Liberal ministry depended. Redmond, leader of the Irish Nationalists, established a balance of power favorable to the Irish and passage of the bill seemed assured. Lloyd George, (then Chancellor of the Exchequer), aware of the heavily pro-English sentiment of Northern Ireland, and of the political dangers of forcing unwilling Protestants under Catholic rule, induced the parties to exempt Ulster from the provisions of the bill, which finally passed in this form. This painting reflects the situation in early 1914: Redmond, with the aid of Asquith, prepares to sever Ireland from the mother country, while Lloyd George symbolically carries the pugnacious Catholic faithful away from the Protestant sanctuary of the North. It is, possibly, the original of a Conservative Party political poster. A UNIQUE PIECE OF POLITICAL PROPAGANDA IN THE HIGHLY UNUSUAL MEDIUM OF OILS
