1914 - "New York lived yesterday probably the last chapter in its history of great military spectacles growing out of the war. . It was the town's first opportunity to greet the men of the 1st Division, and to let them know it remembered their glorious part in the American Army's smashing drives at Toul, at Cantigny, at Soissons, at St. Mihiel, and at the Meuse and the Argonne" wrote the New York Times of the welcome parade of Sept. 10,1914.         A VOYAGE AROUND THE WORLD MADE BY JOEL ROOT 1802 - 1806 [cover title]

[N.p. n.d., but ca. 1914].. [N.p. n.d., but ca. 1914].. 73pp., typescript, printed on rectos only. Small folio. Original limp blue morocco, gilt. Inscribed on front flyleaf. Light wear to extremities, slightly heavier to corners and spine ends. Internally clean. Very good. A very interesting narrative of a voyage made by Joel Root (b. 1770), a native of Southington, Connecticut, as supercargo and director of a voyage on the ship Huron which left New Haven in April 1802 in search of hair seals for the American market and fur seals to be sold in China. Clearing Cape Horn in January 1803, they arrived at the Mocha, Lobos, and St. Mary's islands off the coast of South America, where they found a large population of seals. Root and a small party were blown off course in a whale boat and temporarily separated from the Huron. After being briefly imprisoned at Concepcion, they rejoined the Huron on February 25th. The captain headed for the Lobos Islands off the coast of Peru, while Root chose to stay behind on St. Mary's Island off the coast of Chile. With part of the crew he was able to take ten thousand seal skins. On the return of the Huron, they set sail on September 25th for the island of Massafuero, one of the Juan Ferdinand Islands, also off the coast of Chile. There Root proposed to take fur seals for the China market, while the Huron returned to the U.S. with its cargo of 19,000 skins. "Mr. Root was surprized to find on the island more men than seals... In all there were about 150 men." These were lone sealers left behind by various ships. Root himself took about 4,000 skins, and then purchased another 5,000 or more from the loners who had been threatened by the Viceroy of Peru with imprisonment if they failed to leave the island. In fire sale fashion, Root bought the skins for twenty-five to fifty cents each, and upon reaching Canton he sold them for ninety-five cents apiece and invested the proceeds in China goods which he then sold in Hamburg. From Hamburg he sailed for St. Petersburg, where he bought a cargo of mixed goods to sell on his return to the United States. Root reached New Haven again on October 30, 1806. ^Four other manuscript versions of Root's narrative have been located, all in some way different. There is also a published account of the voyages in the Papers of the New Haven Historical Society (Vol. 5, 1894), which differs markedly from this. That version is told in the first person, while this is in the third; it is generally more detailed but also omits two substantial sections included here which tell of an encounter with pirates at Sumatra and an incident with a disgruntled sealer who almost murdered Root. The present narrative was written by Dr. Emile B. Gardette, Root's grandson-in-law, based on accounts related to him by Root in 1836. According to the text, Gardette wrote this in 1841. As suggested by some of the wording, he may also have used an account which was written in 1840 by Root himself for his family. The original manuscript of that account is not located, but the New York Historical Society lists a "transcript of memoir originally written in 1840 and subsequently copied by [Root's] daughter in 1847." East Carolina University's Joyner Library also holds a copy of the 1840 memoir, photocopied from an unspecified source and previously owned by Jake D. Moore of Kingston, N.C. The University of Montana likewise holds a copy with more or less the same text as the present copy, though theirs is 56pp. rather than 73pp., and is described as a "photocopy of a typescript" with added photographs and genealogy. As for Gardette's manuscript - the original source for our typescript and the version at the University of Montana - the Connecticut Historical Society lists what it calls a "biography" written ca. 1841, a "handwritten narrative" that could be Gardette's account. For remarks on Root's successful enterprise see Busch, WAR AGAINST SEALS: A HISTORY OF THE NORTH AMERICAN SEAL FISHERY (McGill, 1985).

        Nelson's History of the War

-London, Edinburgh, Dublin and New York - Thomas Nelson and Sons, Ltd, 1914. -London, Edinburgh, Dublin and New York - Thomas Nelson and Sons, Ltd, 1914 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. An internally bright and clean first edition complete set of John Buchan's extensive history of the First World War. Complete in Twenty-Four Volumes. Illustrated with numerous maps and plans. This is a collection of the monthly magazine Buchan published that gives a detailed history of the First World War. Buchan was too ill for active service in 1914 or subsequently; this was a psychological blow from which he perhaps never fully recovered. His response was to write, with assistance, Nelson's History of the War, published regularly from February 1915 to July 1919 in instalments of 50,000 words. The series had by far the largest circulation of any war commentary. The enterprise, together with his growing reputation as a writer and his support for the war, gave prominence to his role as correspondent for The Times and the Daily News. (DNB)Condition: In full cloth bindings with blind stamps to the front of the boards. Externally, generally sound though with some marks to boards. There is wear to the extremities, including bumping, with fading to the spines. There is also some slight dampstaining to some boards. Internally, generally firmly bound, bright and generallycleanwith theoccasional spot. Overall: VERY GOOD.

        Poetical Works of Robert Bridges

London - Humphrey Milford, 1914. London - Humphrey Milford, 1914 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. An attractively bound collection of the poems of Robert Bridges. Containing Demeter, Prometheus the Firegiver, and Eros and Psyche, amongst others. As a poet Bridges stands rather apart from the current of modern English verse, but his work has had great influence in a select circle, by its restraint, purity, precision, and delicacy yet strength of expression. It embodies a distinct theory of prosody. Bridge's faith underpinned much of his work. With photographic monochrome frontispiece of the author. Condition: In a half-calf binding. Externally smart, with some light wear to the spine and a couple of marks to the boards only. Internally, firmly bound. Prize bookplate to front free-endpaper. Pages are mainly bright and clean, with just some scattered spotting to the front free-endpapers. Overall: VERY GOOD INDEED..

        Dubliners.

. 1st edition. London: Grant Richards 1914. 278 pp. Publisher's cloth, binding faded, grubby and weakly waterstained on upper frontboard. A few pages weakly browning and 2 pages with a little handwritten notes. * Between 1905, when Joyce first sent a manuscript to a publisher, and 1914, when the book was finally published, Joyce submitted the book 18 times to a total of 15 publishers. The book's publishing history is a harrowing tale of persistence in the face of frustration. The London house of Grant Richards agreed to publish it in 1905. However, their printer refused to set one of the stories (Two Gallants), and Richards then began to press Joyce to remove a number of other passages which he claimed the printer also refused to set. Joyce protested, but eventually did agree to some of the requested changes. However, Richards eventually backed out of the deal. Joyce thereupon resubmitted the manuscript to other publishers, and about three years later (1909) he found a willing candidate in Maunsel and Roberts of Dublin. However, a similar controversy developed and Maunsel too eventually refused to publish, even threatening to sue Joyce for printing costs already incurred. Joyce offered to pay the printing costs himself if the sheets were turned over to him and he was allowed to complete the job elsewhere and distribute the book, but when Joyce arrived at the printer's they refused to surrender the sheets, and burned them the next day. Joyce managed to save one copy which he obtained "by ruse". He then returned to submitting the manuscript to other publishers, and in 1914 Grant Richards once again agreed to publish the book, using the page proofs saved from Maunsel as copy. The book was finally published in June 1914..

        Rare Signed Stock Certificate

Chicago, 1914. Chicago, 1914. unbound. Exceedingly rare partly printed document signed, measuring 8.25 x 11 inches -- a stock certificate issued by the Tigers Base Ball Club on April 13, 1914, certifying that E. K. Brashian is "the owner of one shares of one hundred dollars each of the Capital Stock of The Tigers Base Ball Club transferable only on the books of the Corporation by the holder hereof in person or by Attorney upon surrender of this Certificate properly endorsed." This offering was incorporated under the laws of the State of Illinois with an authorization for the Detroit Tigers to issue Capital Stock with a net worth of $5,000.00. The certificate, printed by Cameron, Amberg & Company, Chicago, Illinois, is decorated with a steel engraving of a Heraldic eagle sitting on a dome and is emblazoned with a gold embossed Corporate Seal: "The Tigers Baseball Club: Illinois." Boldly signed at the conclusion by Robert G. Selke (Secretary) and Michael O'Toole (President). Two vertical folds; tape remnants in the top margin on both sides. Very good condition. According to the Baseball Hall of Fame at Cooperstown, Michael O'Toole was "twice a minor league 20-game winner, won more than 100 games while pitching in the New England and New York State leagues of the American Association. At times, both the Boston Americans and the Detroit Tigers owned his contract. Official records of the era confuse Michael with brother and fellow teammate Marty O'Toole." Also, when viewing the Illinois State records for stock filings in the year 1914, the Secretary of States report lists the Detroit Tigers as filing and being approved for a stock offering of $5,000.00.
