Unpublished Signed Manuscript Journal Written Upon Drygalski's Return from a Lesser Known Expedition into Russian Asia, Illustrated with Hand Drawn Sketch Maps

Munich: , 1914. Munich, 1914. Unpublished manuscript fair journal of Erich von Drygalski, written upon his return from a lesser known expedition into Russian Asia, profusely illustrated with hand drawn sketch maps and diagrams, some of which are also hand coloured. With his travel dates from 10 April to 16 December 1914 indicated occasionally in margins. 8vo. 307 pages, numbered in manuscript, signed on title page. Text is in German. Five single leafs of additional manuscript notes are inserted into the volume. Green cloth boards to spine, very slight wear to extremities, otherwise very good condition, a pleasing and important manuscript work. "Geographie von Asien und Osteuropa (ausschließlich Vorderasien)" [Geography of Asia and Eastern Europe (Exclusively Western Asia)] Drygalski's voluminous manuscript, illustrated in his hand with 32 maps, and topographical diagrams, reflects his affinity for scientific geography especially relating to anthropological history. In 1912 Drygalski he returned from the expedition to Spitzbergen led by Graf Zeppelin. Shortly thereafter in 1914 he travelled across vast regions of Russian Asia, up to Lake Baikal in pursuit of his anthropogeographical studies, and in 1914 wrote this work. While his accounts of the expedition to Greenland has been published in great numbers, this treatise, following his journey to Russia, a traverse through mountainous regions from Nepal and Tibet to the Bering Sea coast, does not appear to have been published. Most certainly however the contents would have been incorporated into one or more of his important lectures. In these pages he makes frequent mention of Alexander von Humbolt's expedition to Russia and Central Asia in 1829, and Sven Hedin's discoveries from 1899 to 1901 surrounding the dried up Lop Nor Lake and the Tarim Basin, in the Karakoram and Tibet. Also discussed is the 1757 edition of an early monumental work by Jean-Baptiste Du Halde, "... History of China Containing a Geographical, Historical.... of the Empire of China, Chinese-Tartary, Corea, and Thibet..." A map of the Tienshan region is attributed in caption to M. Friedrichsen, 1904. Structure, climate and currents, elevation, natural irrigation, erosion, hydrography, glaciation, and the people inhabiting remote and often inhospitable elevations are some of the subjects Drygalski examines within the Asiatic mountain ranges, namely the Himalayas, the Hindu Kush, the Pamir, the Karakoram, the Tien Shan, the Kunlun mountain chain bordering the Tibetan Plateau, and also the Altai Mountains in East-Central Asia, where Russia, China, Mongolia and Kazakhstan come together. At least one third of the volume centers around the Tibetan plateau, and its rugged circumference of colossal mountain ranges. Some of the topics Drygalski examines include geological composition of the Himalayas, hydrography of the same, specifically the Indus, Ganges, and Brahmaputra Rivers, with a map highlighting Nepal and Tibet, as well as political affiliations between Western European nations and Tibet, Bhutan and so forth. Perhaps the pinnacle of Drygalski's expedition, Lake Baikal, sometimes called the Pearl of Russia, comprises 18 pages of the volume and illustrated with 3 maps. Situated in south-central Siberia between the Irkutsk Oblast and the Buryat Republic, "Baikalsee" is the deepest and oldest lake in the world, and the largest freshwater lake by volume. It is home to more than 2,000 species of plants and animals, two-thirds of which can be found nowhere else in the world, including the Baikal omul fish and Baikal oil fish as well as the nerpa, one of the world's only freshwater species of seal. Born in what is now Kaliningrad, in Russia, it seems only fitting that he would have an interest in advancing knowledge of the geography and human sciences of his native land. Equally detailed sections devoted to Russiainclude the Ural Mountains, the Kamchatka Peninsula and the Bering Sea, population and climate in Siberia, important bays in Russian Asia and some of the history surrounding them, including Port Arthur in southern Manchuria, Peter the Great Gulf and the city of Vladivostok, Amur Bay and the town of Mariinsk. The volume concludes with a chart of population distribution in Saint Petersburg in 1897, which numbers Ukranians, Romanians, Armenians, Germans, Turks, Tartars, and Kazakhs, among others. Other sections deal with Mongolia, Dzungaria and the Tarim Basin in northwest China, Lop Nur, the Asiatic sea coast from the Sea of Okhotsk to the Sea of Japan, rivers from all around the world (comparing the Rhine, the Nile, the Mississippi, the Volga, the Congo rivers, and with an especially lengthy description of the Ural). Meticulous and comprehensive, a scarce unpublished work by leading geographer Erich von Drygalski!.

        London

London: privately printed for Alvin Langdon Coburn and Edmund D. Brooks & their friends,, 1914. With Ten Photographs by Alvin Langdon Coburn. Tall quarto. Original white cloth backed grey boards, titles to spine and upper board in black. With the dust jacket. 10 tipped-in plates by Coburn. Tips just a little rubbed, partial tanning to free endpapers. Contents unopened. An excellent copy in the plain dust jacket that is toned and has chips at the ends of the spine panel. First edition, first impression. Scarce in the original plain dust jacket. This lovely production includes an essay by Chesterton on London and ten photographs by Coburn, including the Mansion House, the Tower, the Temple, the Embankment, Westminster Bridge, Parliament, Big Ben, St. Paul's from Bankside, the Thames, and St. Paul's from the foot of it's hill. Chesterton's introductory text explains the appeal of Coburn's resonant images: "the spectator is a serious mystic (that is, a materialist also) and appreciates the bodily beauty of heights, which should always be seen from below. The Devil takes us to the top of an exceedingly high mountain, and makes us dizzy: but God lets us look at the mountain. Yet this mountain made by man can only be seen in London by "sighting;" by getting it between two houses, as a pilot steers between two rocks. Get the sighting wrong and you will see only a public-house, or (what is much worse) a shop full of newspapers.

Trans: ?I send you all my apologies together with [best] wishes for the Russian new year (13 days later!) and must tell you it was impossible to go the other day to your rendez-vous in London, as I was only there for one day. . .?An early collaborator of Diaghilev's, and co-founder with the impressario of the influential magazine The World of Art, Bakst proved to be one of the outstanding artists of his day. Through his set and costume designs for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, for works such as Scheherazade, The Firebird and L'Apres-midi d'un Faune, Bakst helped created the distinctive, exotic style which influenced much Western design during the years immediately preceding the First World War.

Les Soirées de Paris, No. 21-25.

Paris, 1914. 26x17,5 cm. 73-356 pp. + 22 leaves of plates. Five issues in original printed wrappers, stapled. Laid in is an invitation to a ''Bazar de Printemps'', held in Stockholm in 1917 for the benefit of Jewish victims of the war. There are tears on the spines, the wrappers are slightly soiled and torn in outer and lower margins. Issue 21 has a stain at lower right-hand corner on pp. 73-90, slightly affecting two plates. Pp. 325-332 in issue 25 are loose. Contents of the five issues are generally fine but there are a few scattered small tears, chips and specks. The short-lived but influential magazine Les Soirées de Paris was founded by Apollinaire, André Salmon, André Billy and others in order to cover the contemporary art and literature. It ran for 27 issues (some double) the years 1912-1914, when the publication was broken off by the war. Among the contributors and artists treated were Jarry, Picabia, Matisse, Jacob, and Braque. The five issues offered here come from the library of Isaac Grünewald (1889-1946), and three of them bear his signature on front wrapper. Grünewald was the foremost artist and public defender of the first wave of Swedish modernism and held the position of professor at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts between 1932 and 1942. He lived in Paris in the years 1908-1911, where he studied painting at the academy of Matisse, and befriended authors and artists, for instance Apollinaire, Jacob and Salmon, who were associated with Les Soirées de Paris

Eigenh. Brief mit U. ("Fz. Marc").

Sindelsdorf, 18. IV. 1914. - 4 SS. auf Doppelblatt. Gr.-8vo. Gestempelter Briefkopf, liniertes Papier. - Gedruckt in: Franz Marc. Briefe, Schriften, Aufzeichnungen. Leipzig 1989. S. 95.

        London

London: Privately printed for Alvin Langdon Cobrn and Edmund D. Brooks & Their Friends,, 1914. With Ten Photographs by Alvin Langdon Coburn. Octavo. Original linen-backed boards, grey paper sides, titles to spine and front board in black. 10 mounted photographs by Alvin Langdon Coburn. Spine a little dusty, lower corner bumped, otherwise an excellent copy. First edition, first impression. Inscribed by Coburn on the front free endpaper, "To C. C. Parker, Prince of Bookseller's. From his friend Alvin Langdon Coburn, Christmas 1914." C.C. Parker was a bookseller who had established a shop on South Broadway in 1895, publishing Coburn's The Cloud in 1912. Chesterton's introductory text offers an explanation for the expertise of Coburn's quietly resonant and curiously angled images of London's landmarks: "the spectator is a serious mystic (that is, a materialist also) and appreciates the bodily beauty of heights, which should always be seen from below.
