        The Other Kind of Girl

New York: B.W. Huebsch, 1914. First Edition of this purported autobiography of a prostitute. The introduction is strongly feminist, ?A new era has come. The Sisterhood of Woman is the new cry. When women come into their own they will stand shoulder to shoulder and refuse to let their sisters be exploited by men.? Women did not achieve universal suffrage in this country until six years later. Whether this book was written by a woman is unknown; a late, scholarly friend of ours suggested that the publisher may have utilized Louis Untermeyer to write this. Huebsch was a remarkable publisher who embraced controversial subjects and authors (most prominently, James Joyce). Minor cloth staining; near fine in a very good dust jacket.

The Life of Captain Matthew Flinders, R.N

Sydney: Angus and Robertson, 1914. Octavo, portraits, maps and facsimiles; fine in publisher's blue cloth. The long-established life of Flinders. Detailed and scholarly biography of the great mariner and master cartographer Matthew Flinders by Sir Ernest Scott, a pioneering scholar of Australian history. This biography encompasses the entirety of Flinder's naval career, from the second breadfruit expedition under Captain Bligh to his detention on Mauritius and early death. Numerous plates and charts enliven the text.Renowned for his diligence and careful reliance upon original source material, Scott was an important figure in elevating Australian history to a serious academic pursuit. The Australian Dictionary of Biography notes 'the field of Australian history was uncleared scrub when Scott began to work in it...The marvel is the high standard of his work; his Flinders biography, at least, is likely to withstand the ravages of time and scholarly criticism'.

Pedigrees of Anglesey and Carnarvonshire Families

Horncastle Lincolnshire: Author, 1914 With their collateral branches in Denbighshire, Merionethshire and other parts. In original brown paper boards lightly worn, titles in red and black ink. Spine has title in black ink to a newer white paper label, joints have been professionally strengthened. Internally, NO inscriptions, minimal foxing to endpapers, title page text in red and black ink, 2 small tears at margin to rear, [7], 410 pp. THE corner piece to any Welsh collection and very scarce in any form. Rarely found in such lovely condition. GRIFFITH, naturalist and antiquary; took an early interest in archeology and natural history which in time accounted for his volumes on the Flora of Anglesey and Caernarvonshire, published in 1894, and his Portfolio of Photographs of Cromlechs in the same two counties, published in 1900; however it was his truly monumental Pedigrees of Caernarvonshire and Anglesey Families, with their branches in other counties of North Wales, published in 1914, a work of outstanding merit, a godsend to researchers, that he will be best remembered. No such work could be perfect, and the great influx of family papers to library repositories has exposed many errors both of commission and omission. But the piling up of such errata by fortunate acquirers of the latest information can never impair the basic importance of this great work. See NLW WBO for a full Bio.

        Photos (5) - Rabaul

Papua New Guinea, 1914. Rabaul (New Britain, Papua New Guinea), circa 1914. Set of five (5) photographs taken in Rabaul during the First World War by a gentleman serving with the Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force (AN&MEF), possibly an early member of the Australian Light Horse Brigades. Photographs measure approximately 8,5 x 13,5 cm, with placename inscription, mounted individually with transparent corners onto cardstock leaves. Very Good Condition. Especially striking are the two photographs of a young mother and an elder woman, native to Rabaul, possibly of the Baining tribe, both gathering firewood, coconut, and root vegetables along a river bank. The Australian soldier is seen in uniform in three images whilst in Papua New Guinea's capital. In one of these, an inquisitive and barefoot boy invites himself into the scene, creating a most endearing moment. The Australian Naval and Military Expeditionary Force (AN&MEF) was a small volunteer force of approximately 2,000 men, raised in Australia shortly after the outbreak of the First World War to seize and destroy German wireless stations in German New Guinea in the south-west Pacific. The AN&MEF began forming following a request by the British government on 6 August 1914. The force was assembled under the guidance of Colonel James Legge, and was separate from the Australian Imperial Force. Under the command of Colonel William Holmes, the AN&MEF departed Sydney aboard HMAS Berrima, meeting with with battle cruiser HMAS Australia and light cruiser HMAS Sydney plus some destroyers at the eastern tip of New Guinea, arriving at Rabaul on 11 September. Following the capture of German possessions in the region on 17 September, ending the Siege of Toma, the AN&MEF provided occupation forces for the duration of the war. A military government was subsequently set up by Holmes and continued until 1921 when Australia received a mandate from the League of Nations to govern the territory. Australian Light Horse were mounted troops with characteristics of both cavalry and mounted infantry. They served in the Second Boer War and World War I. While Australian forces fought against the Boers in South Africa, the Boer methodology of conducting war was observed and considered to be the answer for Australian defence. Volunteer Light Horse Regiments were subsequently established around Australia, supported by the Rifle Club movement which provided semi-trained reinforcements for the various formations. The raising of the famous 1st Australian Horse Regiment was due to the vision and efforts of Lieutenant Colonel Kenneth Mackay who, as a Captain, obtained permission from the New South Wales Government to travel the country districts with a view of enlisting the best horsemen in the colony. The first enrolments took place at Murrumburrah on 28 August 1897 and by 20th November, recruiting throughout the country districts was completed with 3,000 eager applicants ready and willing to join the Regiment. Detachments were formed at Murrumburrah, Gunnedah, Gundagai, Quirinidi, Mudgee, Scone, Michelago, Boggabri, Cootamundra, Braidwood, Lue, Wallendbeen and Bungendore. From 1903, now part of the Commonwealth Military Forces, all Light Horse Regiments throughout the Commonwealth were to be armed and trained as mounted riflemen and not as cavalry who carry a sword for mounted shock action. The mounted infantry remained the key to the Australian defence posture until the Kitchener Report of 1910 which envisaged formations that could be slotted directly into an Imperial expeditionary force. By the outbreak of World War I, there were 23 light horse regiments within Australia's part-time military force, consisting of 9,000 personnel. During the inter-war years, a number of regiments were raised as part of Australia's part-time military force. A number of Australian light horse units are still in existence today.. Very Good.

        Nicolas Poussin

1665 1914 - A folio limited edition of previously unpublished documents of Nicolas Poussin, by Emile Magne. Bound in paper-covered boards. Binding is split though this is common with the original paper boards. Withover100 illustrationsof Poussin's paintings and drawings. Nicolas Poussin, 1594 1665, was a French painter in the classical style. His work predominantly features clarity, logic, and order, and favours line over colour. His work serves as an alternative to the dominant Baroque style of the 17th century. Until the 20th century he remained the major inspiration for such classically-oriented artists as Jacques-Louis David and Paul Cezanne. He spent most of his working life in Rome, except for a short period when Cardinal Richelieu ordered him back to France to serve as First Painter to the King. Condition: The binding itself is generallyfirm however the text block has split between pages 80 and 81. Pages 81-86, including three plates, and also between 114 to 118,are partially detached. There is some wear to the extremities, including some bumping and rubbing, with the card of the spine split in several places. Internally the pags are generally clean and bright. Overall the condition is good only, with a very good interior. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Interior in excellent condition with some minor traces of foxing. Extraordinary publication, highly underestimated in its originality of erotical illustrations in Beardsley-style. The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám is the title that Edward FitzGerald gave to his translation of a selection of poems, originally written in Persian and numbering about a thousand, attributed to Omar Khayyám (1048?-1131), a Persian poet, mathematician and astronomer. A ruba'i is a two-line stanza with two parts (or hemistichs) per line, hence the word rubáiyát (derived from the Arabic language root for "four"), meaning "quatrains". (Wikipedia) In 1914, the Indian artist Mera K. Sett published his illustrated edition of The Rubaiyat. It was privately printed and published by Galloway and Porter of Cambridge, in a limited edition of 250 copies. On the second page of his Foreword, Sett tells us that some English publishers found the naked figures in his work too shocking and considered that they were likely to offend the sensibilities of ?"decent-minded English people.?" Since Sett refused to make them decent by adding strategically placed fig-leaves, publication was eventually financed by his father.
