[Three Illustrated Manuscript Journal by A Pittsburgh Citizen]

[Pittsburgh?], [ca. 1914-1933?]. Hardcover. Very good. Three 8vo. volumes. Vols. I & II in matching red and black cloth, one titled (on spine and cover) "Record," the other (spine only) "Journal." Each 7.75" x 5" approx. and paginated identically: [1- illustrated and annotated pastedown], [4], 3-186, [1 - illustrated and annotated pastedown]. More than 200 illustrations in each of these volumes, most in color - ink with crayon and colored pencil. Vol. III in limp textured black boards; 8.5" x 5.75" approx. and paginated: [1 - illustrated and annotated pastedown], [1-321], [blank], [pastedown]. Includes more than 350 illustrations, most pen and ink portraits, but several color and/or other subjects. All volumes fully used and filled in a tiny and meticulous hand. Very good or better overall. Each volume apparently complete, though ellipses in dating suggests that these were but a fragment of the author's total output. An idiosyncratic but extraordinary creation by a sadly anonymous citizen of Pittsburgh, PA. Part personal diary, part hermetic rant, part folk art, these three volumes -- totaling some 100,000 words with more than 750 original illustrations -- present a wholly original voice that uniquely melds local politics, religious rhetoric, original verse, and vernacular caricature. Taking as its starting point the daily events of Pittsburgh and vicinity, the journals seem inspired first and foremost by daily newspapers, sometimes as simple redactions of the day's reported events, but much more often as amplifications, illuminations, and lampoonings - much of it quite hilarious. Jokes, many written in Irish dialect, line the margins, along with numerous examples of topical verse - none of it (at the risk of damning with faint praise) terrible. Other entries rail against politicians (especially Republicans), the Temperance movement (especially its women), and England (perhaps most especially of all), much of it in a kind of private language that is equal parts pulpit and poetic. Most entries accompanied by hand-drawn and (usually) hand-colored portraits, including many sympathetic renderings of figures from the left: Mother Jones, Eugene Debs, Samuel Gompers, Pancho Villa, etc. While their elegant simplicity, economy of line, and primary palette seem to presage the work of a contemporary artist like Marcel Dzama, their earthy portraiture appear equally indebted to Hieronymus Bosch. Unfortunately, the journals contain little personal information, so our efforts to identify their creator have proved fruitless. However, we can assert the following: he was an Irishman, probably born in County Wexford ca. 1880; he had an intimate knowledge of the inner workings of ward politics, and he detested the Church and the English, about whom he was only bad things to say. Clearly the work of an obsessive compulsive with graphomaniac tendencies, the work is nonetheless one of the most fully realized outsider books we've encountered, one of only a few whose text is the equal of its art. While its political concerns recall the creations of Charles Dellschau, its strangeness brings to mind nothing so much as Henry Darger's IN THE REALMS OF THE UNREAL. In short, a continually inventive outsider work, worthy of further study.

        Feats on the Fiord

1914. An Unrecorded Binding VariantIn the Scarce Dust JacketWith All Plates in Color[RACKHAM, Arthur, illustrator]. MARTINEAU, Harriet. Feats on the Fiord. By Harriet Martineau. With Coloured Illustrations by Arthur Rackham. London : J.M. Dent & Sons Limited / New York: E.P. Dutton & Company, n.d. [1914]. Second (and best) American edition, with all the plates in color, in an unrecorded binding variant. Octavo (7 x 5 in; 178 x 127 mm). 128 pp. Eight color plates, including frontispiece (all dated 1899).Publisher's original blue cloth pictorially and ornamentally stamped in gilt, gilt lettered and ornamented spine with E.P. Dutton & Co. at foot and onlaid color plate ("It came nearer and nearer, and at last quite up to the can of ale" (frontisiece)) to upper board. Original pictorial dust jacket (also with E.P. Dutton & Co. at foot), printed in green. A fine copy in the very scarce dust jacket (jacket slightly chipped at top and bottom of spine). Both Latimore & Haskell and Riall note binding in red or green cloth but not blue, as here. The half-title reads: Tales for Children from Many Lands Edited by F.C. Tilney."I have seen a copy that causes a confusion as to which is the 1st edition. The cover has a label pasted over "With Coloured Illustrations by Arthur Rackham" to change the title to "With coloured illustrations ", and on the title page there is no mention of "Coloured by W. Cubitt Cooke". There may have been a mistake of ommitting the the colouring had been done by another on the title page so the pasted plate was added to the cover until the 2nd. issue." (Riall, p.122).Just to complicate matters further - our copy has "Coloured Illustrations by Arthur Rackham" on the front cover, no mention of Cubitt Cooke on the title-page - but there is a small erratum slip which is tipped-in over the List of Illustrations which reads: "Erratum / Title Page / The illustrations in this volume are reproduced from line drawings by Arthur Rackham, but the pictures have been coloured by W. Cubitt Cooke." (DJB)."The Ingoldsby Legends commission [by Dent] was soon followed by another from Dent, for the eleven illustrations to Harriet Martineau's Feats on the Fjord. To be quite sure of getting the detail in the Norwegian costumes right, Rackham sought the advice of Dr. Hans Reusch, the friend he had made in Norway the year before" (Hamilton, Arthur Rackham: A Biography, pp. 50-51).In the first edition of 1899 [The Temple Classics for Young People], the twelve plates, with the exception of the frontispiece, are in black and white, and the title page thus lacks the credit to W. Cubitt Cooke. Colorist William Cubitt Cooke was a friend of Rackham's, a fellow member of the Langham Sketching Club, a group organized by The Artist's Society, meeting at its London headquarters each Friday evening from October through May.Latimore and Haskell, p. 43. Riall, p. 122.

Vieux Marché Gand". Alter Markt in Gent.

      - Radierung und Mischtechnik, auf chamoisfarbenem Japan, links unten betitelt, rechts unten signiert „JdBruycker". 40:56,5 cm. Breitrandiger sehr guter Abdruck! I, S. 338).

On the Hills of Time. Calendar for 1915

      T. N. Foulis, London and Edinburgh 1914 - Scarce panorama. Closed, 14 by 11 cm, and opening to about 132 cm in length, with twelve panels on each side. With each fold, a color plate illustration representing the month in some way on the left, the month's calendar on the right, and this alternative pattern runs on both sides of the panorama. The same decoration serves as background for each month's calendar, but the facing full illustrated plate carry captions, and these and the imagery of the plate relate to the ongoing war either directly or indirectly in most instances. For example, in a few plates a man looks as if he is a soldier -- it is not always 100 percent clear that this is so -- but the sentiments are precisely the grist of wartime longing, with pleas for peace, love, a recognition of strife, etc. As to the rareness of this panorama, only two items with the same title were located on OCLC, both being calendars for 1914, which almost certainly had differences besides the monthly calendars. Soiling of outer panels. Rubbing and wear along folds. [Attributes: First Edition]
