Kniga Razskazov o Bitvakh Tekintsev [The Book of Tales about the Battles of the Tekei: Turkmen Historical Poem of the 19th Century]: Published and translated with a Foreword and Notes by A.N. Samoilovich.

Saint Petersburg: Imperial Academy of Sciences, Academy of Sciences 1914 - First publication of this important 19th century Turkmen poem with interesting references to the Great Game in Central Asia. It includes the original Turkmen text (with separate title page and pagination), its Russian translation, and several commentaries and articles about the poem. Abdu-s-Sattar Kazy was a religious judge in Khiva in the 19th century. In his poem he described the events he witnessed: the settlement of the Turkmen tribes in the Caspian steppes, their struggle with the Persians, the personality of Tekei Khan Nur-Verdi and his enemies etc. The text of the poem shows that Abdu-s-Sattar Kazy was acquainted with the geography of Persia, Persian manners and customs, had knowledge about Russian troops and knew how Englishmen looked (verse 686 "they plucked their beards and moustache like Englishmen"). The poem is supplemented with scientific commentaries and articles about its language, history and contents and several indexes. Published by the Faculty of Eastern Languages of Saint Petersburg University and translated and edited by Alexander Nikolaevich Samoilovich, 1880-1938, a specialist in Turkic history and philology, member of Russian Academy of Sciences and director of the Institute of the Oriental Studies of the Academy. Samoilovich was a victim of Stalin's political repression. In 1937 he was arrested on the false charge of being a Japanese spy and creating a terrorist organisation and in 1938 he was executed by shooting. Bound in later brown gilt tooled half calf with cloth boards and black gilt label. Original printed wrappers bound in. A very good unopened copy. First edition Octavo, pp.xx, 157, 82, [55, Arabic numbering] one plate. Text in Russian and Turkmen.

Covent Garden receipt for performances by Enrico Caruso signed in full.

Octavo. Dated [London], May 25, 1914. In black ink on blue paper. With annotations in another hand. "Royal Opera Covent Garden Proprietors: The Grand Opera Syndicate, Ltd. General Manager, Mr. Neil Forsyth" printed at head. Caruso acknowledges that he has received £500 to sing in Madame Butterfly on Wednesday, May 25, 1914. Creased at folds; some fading; two staple holes and two small perforations; remnants of adhesive and minor repair to verso; purple handstamp to central portion. . "The winning quality of the sound, the tender mezza voce (particularly in the early years), and his phrasing, based on a rare mastery of legato and portamento, enabled Caruso to sing the French and Italian lyric repertory as well as lighter operas. In addition, his noble, incisive declamation, his broad, generous phrasing, and his vigor in dramatic outbursts made him a notable interpreter of Verdi as well as of French grand opéra. In this repertory his performances were characterized by the irresistible erotic appeal of his timbre allied to a temperament as warm and vehement as his voice. His numerous recordings, now faithfully remastered on CD, not only made him universally famous, they also did much to encourage the acceptance of recording as a medium for opera." Rodolfo Celletti and Alan Blyth in Grove Music Online. Caruso sang Lieutenant Pinkerton in this performance of Puccini's opera. The 1914 season would be Caruso's last at Covent Garden. World War One erupted shortly after the season concluded, and Caruso did not return after the War's end in 1918.

        Autograph letter signed ("Fz. Marc").

Sindelsdorf, 18. IV. 1914. - Large 4to. 4 pp. on bifolium. Stamped letterhead, ruled paper. Fine letter to Hugo Ball (1886-1927), who was working then as a dramaturg at the Munich Kammerspiele. Marc refuses to realize a theatre project under their current circumstances: "I would rather wait until we can really create something new, with our own ensemble and with perfect freedom of movement. Otherwise, nothing solid comes to pass. Then we would have to engage Kokoschka, Kandinsky, Klee, and Macke, and as musicians we must get the Schoenberg circle (Schoenberg, Webern, Berg and others) [.]". - Furthermore, Marc mentions the Russian painter Vladimir Georgievitsch Bechteev (1878-1971), a member of the Neue Künstlervereinigung München ("Munich New Artist's Association"), who was friendly with the "Blaue Reiter" ("Blue Rider"). Bechteev was involved in the theatre project discussed by Hugo Ball, which fell apart, as did other plans with members of the "Blue Rider". In 1914, he went back to Russia, and was called up to the army. After WWII, he worked as a set designer and illustrator. Franz Marc. Briefe, Schriften, Aufzeichnungen (Leipzig 1989), p. 95.

Eine Praehistorische Metropole in Südamerika. Una Metrópoli prehistorica en la América del sud. Band I, tomo I.

Arthur Posnansky (1873 - 1946) was an important contributor to Bolivian culture history, being not only a pioneer in Bolivian archaeology, but also in Bolivian cinematography, in the development of the national park system, and in the introduction of the first automobile into Bolivia. He was trained as a naval engineer in his native Vienna, a skill which he quickly parlayed into a fortune in Bolivia in the rubber boom, in terms of transporting the latex by river transport. With the loss of Arce to Brazil in 1903, he shifted his focus to other fields. He brought the first gasoline-powered motorboat to Lake Titicaca that year, and while visiting the excavations of the French Crequi-Montfort and Senechal de La Grange Mission, under the direction of George Courty, during trips to the lake, he became very intrigued with the site of Tiwanaku and its place in Bolivian prehistory. Posnansky shortly thereafter began his extensive collection of material artifacts from Tiwanaku, constructing the -"Palacio Tihuanacu" in 1917-1918 to house the stela, ceramics and other materials which he collected. This structure and its collections were subsequently sold to the state, becoming the current Museo Nacional de Arqueologia.

Some very light foxing to borders of plates, otherwise a fine copy."Nearer to the private press style and better known are the books from Philip Lee Warner at the Riccardi Press and Chatto and Windus's Florence Press. They were not strictly private presses, but very near in heritage and example. Types for both were designed by Herbert Horn.and cut by Edward Prince. Both these typefaces have a clear and rational beauty, more economic in use than the Doves type but based upon the same models. Most of the Riccardi books were printed by Jacobi at the Chiswick Press" (Franklin, The Private Presses, p. 160)."Mr Horne also designed a similar type for the Riccardi Press, who se first book appeared in 1909. The title was assumed by the Medici Society for books 'to be finely printed and issued at reasonable prices through the usual trade channels.' The books were primarily vehicles for coloured illustrations reproduced by the Medici Process, by which a large number of single prints had already been made, but the program was soon extended.Composition and presswork were done at the Chiswick Press under the personal supervision of Mr. Charles T. Jacobi until his retirement in 1922. Texts were chiefly of familiar classics and many were illustrated by contemporary artists" (Ransom, p. 164-65).F[rederick] Cayley Robinson (1862-1927) was an English painter, decorator and illustrator. Born in Brentford, Cayley Robinson was the son of a stockbroker and studied at St John's Wood Academy, the Royal Academy Schools and at the Académie Julian in Paris from 1890 to 1892. He was a member of the Society of Painters in Tempera, the New English Art Club and the Royal Watercolour Society. He regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Society of British Painters. In 2010 the National Gallery put on an exhibition in the Sunley Room showing six works by Cayley Robinson The exhibition ran from 14 July to 17 October."The look of Cayley Robinson's paintings, so distinctive, so clear, turns out to be much more than a synthesis of past art. It is precisely what allows subversion to hide in plain sight" (Review of National Gallery exhibition, The Guardian, July 24, 2010).Ransom, p. 395, no. 7.

Hark! Hark! The Dogs do Bark! With Note by Walter Emanuel.

London: G.W. Bacon & Co. Ltd 1914 - Map dimensions 48.5 x 69.5 cm, overall 55.5 x 74.5 cm. Folding colour printed comic map of Europe, mounted on linen, folds between publisher's brown cloth boards with a printed title label to the upper cover. The cover label a little soiled, a little creasing at the folds, a single very short tear with no loss to the lower edge, a very good example overall. A richly coloured "Serio-Comique" or allegorical map of Europe in the early stages of the First World War. The belligerent nations are represented by stereotypical breeds of dog: the British bulldog, the French poodle and the German dachshund with a great bear representing Russia. The map is further embellished with the striding figure of Winston Churchill, dressed as a sailor to signify his role as First Lord of the Admiralty, holding numerous dog leads with battleships stretching out towards the continent. Similarly, the tsar of Russia is shown riding a large steamroller towards central and eastern Europe. The four columns of Emanuel's note to the lower margin of the map is typically jingoistic and closes with the refrain "All this, and more, may be seen depicted above. Search well and you may find many things. But not Peace. Peace has gone to the Dogs for the present.".

DE BELLO GALLO COMMENTARIORUM. [COMMENTARIES ON THE GALLIC WARS]

Riccardi Press, London 1914 - mm (). xi, [i] pp., [1] leaf, 249 pp., [1] leaf (colophon). No. 5 of 12 COPIES PRINTED ON VELLUM, 10 of which were for sale (and 525 copies on paper). Publisher's flexible vellum, gilt titling on upper cover and flat spine, green silk ties. Ransom, p. 396; Tomkinson, p. 150. The vellum somewhat darkened and with the appearance of soiling, though both of these apparently a reflection of the original condition of the skin; in all other ways a mint copy. This is the vellum printing of the final volume in the Riccardi Press series of classical works, "Scriptorum Classicorum Bibliotheca Riccardiana," and the only work of non-fiction to be included. (Other volumes in the series were by Horace, Catullus/Tibullus/Propertius, Virgil, and Apuleius). A history covering the first seven years of the Gallic War as well as part of the Civil War, these famous "Commentaries" comprise the only extant work of Julius Caesar (102?-44 B.C.), the general, emperor, orator, poet, and historian whose name is foremost among leaders in the ancient world. Written largely as a justification of Caesar's military policy, they are famous for their simplicity, succinctness, and purity of diction: they are called by J. W. Mackail "the model and despair of later historians." Few would rank Riccardi Press books with Kelmscotts or Ashendenes, but they are of high quality and do have substantial appeal. The vellum used for the text here is certainly fine, its brightness and buttery feel providing uncommonly pleasant visual and tactile experiences. No. 5 of 12 COPIES PRINTED ON VELLUM, 10 of which were for sale (and 525 copies on paper). [Attributes: Hard Cover]
