George Patton writes on hunting at Fort Riley; offered with the President's Cup awarded to the 1923 War Department Polo Team and an equestrian trophy issued to his wife Beatrice

Fort Riley, Kansas, October 13, 1914. 8" x 10.5". "Autograph Letter Signed, ""George S Patton Jr.,"" 2 pages, 8"" x 10.5"" on Mounted Service School letterhead, Fort Riley, Kansas, October 13, 1914 to his mother. With the original transmittal envelope addressed to ""Mrs. Geo. S. Patton San Gabriel California."" Expected mailing folds, else very fine condition. Offered together with a sterling silver pitcher, 7"" x 8.5"" awarding the 1923 ""PRESIDENT'S CUP"" for polo to the War Department team and a sterling sliver trophy, 9.75"" x 4.75"", mounted on a 4.25"" diameter wooden base, an award given to Beatrice Patton for ""HAWAII'S SIXTH TERR[ITORIAL]. FAIR"" of 1927. Both pieces bear some minor blemishes and minor wear. Patton's letter reads in full: ""Dear Mama: For the last two days it has been very cold almost winter. Yesterday we had a drag-hunt and there was one bad ditch in it so before starting I warned people that I would show them the ditch. I did I fell into it and both Wing and I lit on our heads but it did not hurt us a bit and we had a fine hunt. I just sent for three new fox hounds for the pack we simply had to have them and they did not cost very much. I took a rest Sunday by going on a coyote hunt with Dr. Hewett I rode over fifty miles in eleven hours and did not see a coyote but a bunch of young mules tried to kill the hounds and we had a lot of trouble keeping them off. Mrs Ayer had been very sick so B[eatrice] has not come yet I expect her about Sunday. Every thing is about as usual love to all Your devoted son George S Patton Jr."" The letter is accompanied by two trophies. The first is a pitcher awarding the ""PRESIDENT'S CUP"" to the War Department Polo team for their June 1923 victory at the Philadelphia Country Club. Patton was an avid polo player and had captained the highly successful 1922 Army squad before heading off for Kansas the following year, where he underwent further training, including the Field Officer's Course at Fort Riley and then the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, graduating 25th in his class in 1924. His success on the polo grounds won him the admiration of his former teammates?"so much so that they apparently presented their 1923 trophy to him as a memento. Patton, like many young cavalry officers, gravitated towards polo in some part due to the sport's inherent danger as well as its role in improving riding skills. In 1931, a cavalry officer was killed in a match at the Meadow Brook Club and over 70 percent of officers who played responded to a survey that they had been injured during play. Patton suffered numerous injuries, including a serious fall in 1936 that resulted in a serious head injury. Reflecting on the season of 1922, Patton wrote in the Cavalry Journal, ?The virtue of polo as a military accomplishment rests on the following: it makes a man think fast while he is excited; it reduces his natural respect for his own safety - that is, makes him bold; it ... teach[es] restraint under exciting circumstances ... nearest to mounted combat; makes riding worthwhile; keeps a man hard ... [and] teach[es] better horse management.? (George S. Patton, Jr., ?Report of Operations of the Army Polo Team of 1922,? Cavalry Journal, April 1923, p.233.) The second trophy dates from Patton's posting in Hawaii from 1925 to 1927. His wife, Beatrice, shared her husband's passion for equestrian sports and this award was given to her during the 1927 annual Territorial Fair for ""Best Saddle Horse Ladies won by BULL RUN RIDDEN BY BEATRICE AYER PATTON.""       Paris: Succes, 1914. Hardbound. Condition varies, sold as a collection of plates. The front cover (with the gold scissors) is dampstained and soiled. The first three sheets of mounted ads show moisture offsetting to some degree. The next 35 pages or so (17 sheets) are virtually free of defects other than very slight waviness. Following these sheets the progression of moisture damage is rapid through the final four sheets of text and the following sheets of ads. Thus, sold as a collection of rare pochoir plates.. Large folio mounted in buckram with pochoir plates, tipped-in advertisements and additional illustrations throughout. Approx. 66 pp., including 22 pp. narrative text. See condition notes.         The Art Of Spiritual Harmony By Wassily Kandinsky: Translated With An Introduction By M.T.H. Sadler Illustrated

Constable And Company Limited, London 1914 - Marbled-paper boards and leather spine label stamped in gilt. Near fine, small hint of wear to spine, very clean copy "Wassily Kandinsky's contributions as a theorist were arguably more influential on modern art than any of his paintings. In Concerning the Spiritual in Art, first published in 1914, Kandinsky both promotes and defends a form of art in which painters express themselves in abstract terms independent of the material world around them, much as musicians do. Divided into two parts, About General Aesthetic (including an examination of geometrical forms) and About Painting (a discussion of the psychology of color and the language and form of color), Concerning the Spiritual in Art offers an insight into the mind of one of the most renowned of all abstract painters and a preview of the art that he was to produce in the years to come" [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        IF

Macmillan and Co. Limited. London. 1914. SECOND SEPARATE ENGLISH EDITION. 8vo. (6.5 x 4.6 inches). Printed cover plus 4pp, as per Richards A269 but with the addition of a portrait frontis of Kipling after an illustration by M. Webb which is printed on stiff dark grey paper. The grey paper covers are then bound in contemporary full burgundy soft suede binding with red, white and blue silk tie to the spine. Front panel lettered in gilt and with blind stamped line ruled border with floral corner pieces. A little minor foxing to the text pages but overall a lovely presentation of this important work. Probably bound at the time of publication by either a bookseller or gift shop to make the thin paper wrappered poem more suitable for presentation as a gift. No copy in this format with this binding and with the portrait has been seen by the author of the most recent and comprehensive Kipling bibliography so this is very likely not a publishers variant. ----- The Poem first appeared in the book Rewards and Fairies (October 1910), this separate publication was issued to capitalise on the huge, and instant, popularity of what has become Kipling's most enduring work of verse. A poll taken by the BBC in the UK in 2005 voted it as Britain's favourite Poem, poling twice as many votes as the number 2 choice, Lord Tennyson's The Lady of Shallot. Originally written in 1895, IF was inspired by the actions of Dr. Leander Starr Jameson, a British Officer whose forces were defeated by the Boers in 1895, but who was portrayed as a victorious hero by the British press, the poem is a powerful masterclass in maintaining the British stiff upper lip. ---- David Alan Richards. Rudyard Kipling. A bibliography. A269. Note. -- 5000 copies printed in July 1914.

        Daddy Cat

London: Blackie and Son Limited, 1914. - A Day in the Life of Daddy CatWAIN, Louis. Daddy Cat Illustrated by Louis Wain. London: Blackie and Son Limited, [n.d., ca. 1914].First edition. Quarto (9 5/8 x 6 3/4 inches; 245 x 172 mm.). 36 pp. Color pictorial title-page and thirty-four full-page color illustrations. Original quarter red cloth over tan cloth boards, front cover with full-color illustration (taken from the color illustration on page 13) pasted-on, pictorial gray end-papers. A spectacular copy. Very scarce, especially in this condition.A charming little book which pictorially follows the exciting day of Daddy Cat and his two kittens. At the end of the last century, Louis Wain (1860-1939), the Edwardian cat artist who went mad, became a household name as an illustrator of cats, whom he depicted in all sorts of activities, from skating and playing cricket to driving motor cars, attending dances, and playing musical instruments. "He invented a cat style, a cat society, a whole cat world. English cats that do not look like Louis Wain cats are ashamed of themselves" (H.G. Wells)."From 1883, Wain began to draw cats as they had never been drawn before, cats in humorous guises, in human situations, but always beautifully handled [a]lthough he was sometimes forced to draw dogs before he became well-known!"         BILDERBUCH VOLUMES 1 & 2

      - FREYHOLD,K[onrad]. BILDERBUCH 2 VOLUMES: Band Tiere [and] Band Sport u. Spiel. Koln am Rhein: H. Schaffstein, funftes, viertes tausand, no date, circa 1914, 1920. Two volumes, oblong 4to (12 x 10"), cloth backed pictorial boards, except for slightest bit of cover soil, near fine in a beautiful custom clamshell box. With no text at all in either book, each leaf (printed on rectos only) features a striking, stylized full page hand- colored pochoir illustration depicting children at play or with various toys. Some illustrations are surreal, several are similar to Tom Seidmann Freud in style. The richness of the colors and the angular designs are fantastic. A series of picture books were planned but these were the only two published. It is rare to find such nice copies of both volumes together. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
