Various, 1914-1927. UNBOUND. Mode of Inheritance (1914) front cover badly chipped and loose, some old tape to spine. "With the writer's compliments" in pen. The two other Belling offprints are: Single and Double Rings at the Reduction Division in Uvularia (1926); The Attachments of Chromosomes at the Reduction Division in Flowering Plants (1927). Letter is folded with bottom left corner cut away. The letter reads: ?I wish to thank you for your papers, especially for the copy of the Chromosome hypothesis applied in Linkage in Lathyrus & Primula. I have met with at least 3 cases of linkage in my own work. I sent a short paper to Punnet, of Cambridge, England, some months ago, pointing out how the results of my work and that of others was dead against the Cambridge hypothesis of somatic segregation, but he did not care to publish it. It seems to me strange that a critical biologist like Bateson should have led his followers in the assumption of such an unsupported and barren hypothesis. Columbia University is leading the world in this line of work. Yours truly, John Belling Botanist? ?Bridges was an American scientist, known for his contributions to the field of genetics. Along with Alfred Sturtevant and H.J. Muller, Bridges was part of the famous fly room of Thomas Hunt Morgan at Columbia University.? Wikipedia ?Belling used plants such as lilies and hyacinths to demonstrate that segments between non-homogenous chromosomes can interchange. He was able to make accurate estimates of chromosome numbers and proposed that chromomeres, the small condensations along the chromosome, were individual genes.? Wikipedia Calvin Bridges is featured character, in the film The Fly Room (2014). Rare books make Fine Gifts. Free tracking USA. Quality, Value, Experience. . Very Good.

Internationale Arbeiter Chronik [International Labor Chronicle] - Group of 6 Issues

New York: Max Baginski, 1914. Near-complete run of this short-lived radical journal, published by the German-born anarchist, editor, and co-founder of Mother Earth. Baginski emigrated to the U.S. from Berlin in 1893, eventually moving from Chicago to New York with his companion Millie Schumm and settling on Emma Goldman's farm in Ossining. He was part of the group that planned the production of the journal that would become Mother Earth - a publication for which he would contribute to extensively. In New York he worked as a publicist for various left journals, including a number of German-language workers' papers like his own Internationale Arbeiter Chronik, an anarchist montly newspaper. Published between March and September, 1914, Baginski's paper reproduced writings by Johann Most, Karl Marx, Mikhail Bakunin, and Friedrich Nietzsche, articles on syndicalism, anarchist events in the U.S. and abroad, poetry, and current events, with increasing attention to the effects of the World War on the worker. Rare; we find no copies in the trade (August, 2015); OCLC finds 2 locations with sparse holdings (Northwestern, U.Michigan). Six tabloid issues (ca.45.5cm); illustrated wrappers; 4pp per issue. Publication sequence as follows: Nos.1, 3-7. All issues horizontally folded (presumed as-issued), edges worn, with occasional tears, splits, and creasing to extremities and folds; toning to extremities, with old dampstain to gutters; complete - Good to Very Good overall.

BLAST. Review of the Great English Vortex. No. 1. June 20th, 1914

London: John Lane, The Bodley Head, 1914. 30.5 cm x 24 cm. Pp. [164] - errors in pagination of the last several pages. Bright pinkish violet wrappers, with BLAST printed diagonally in black on upper cover and mirrored on rear cover. Text printed on heavy wove paper with plates printed on heavy white coated paper, sewn binding. Spinestrip creased and chipped with pieces flaked off from the spine ends (approx. 8 cm at head), front cover detached but present; minor foxing to margins of prelims and endpages, otherwise a good plus copy in the original state. The first of only two editions of this short-lived literary and artistic magazine of the Vorticist Movement in Britain, intended to be issued quarterly. "Blast 1 was edited and largely written by Wyndham Lewis with contributions from Pound, Gaudier-Brzeska, Epstein, Spencer Gore, Wadsworth, and Rebecca West and included an extract from Ford Madox Hueffer's novel The Saddest Story, better known by its later title The Good Soldier (published under his subsequent pseudonym, Ford Madox Ford)." - from Wikipedia. Ezra Pound's poem on page 48, titled "Fratres Minores" has 3 lines (of 7) blacked out by U.S. Censors. (Note: In the 1967 Kraus Reprint of BLAST, these three lines were not reproduced at all, or even shown blacked out.) Initially announced for April publication in full-page adverts in THE EGOIST, it was delayed until June in order that additional material could be included. According to C1a - Pound & Grover, it was probably issued after June 25 based on letters from John Lane; C1 Morrow & Lafourcade.. First Edition. Original Wrappers. Good Plus.. Quarto.

The high-frequency spectra of the elements. Teil 2 (von 2). SS. 703-713. Mit 3 Abbildungen. In: Philosophical Magazine, 6th series, Vol. 27, No. 160.

London Taylor & Francis 1914 - (22,5 x 14,5 cm). SS. (541)-756. Mit Abbildungen und 3 teils gefalteten Tafeln. Original-Broschur. - "Moseley, working under Rutherford in Manchester, used the method of X-ray spectroscopy devised by the Braggs to calculate variations in the wavelength of the rays emitted by each element. These he was able to arrange in a series according to the nuclear charge of each element. Thus if the nuclear charge of hydrogen is 1, in helium it is 2, in lithium 3, and so on by regular progression to uranium as 92. These figures Moseley called atomic numbers. He pointed out that they also represented a corresponding increase in extra-nuclear electrons and that it is the number and arrangement of these electrons rather than the atomic weight that determines the properties of an element. It was now possible to base the periodical table on a firm foundation, and to state with confidence that the number of elements up to uranium is limited to 92. When Moseley's table was completed, six atomic numbers had no corresponding elements; but Moseley himself was able to predict the nature of four of the missing elements" (PMM). - Gut erhalten. - DSB 9, 542; PMM 407; Norman 1559 [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists

London: Grant Richards Ltd., (1914). First edition. 8vo. (vi), 390, (2) pp. Publisher's black cloth, gilt lettered to the spine and upper board. Minimal wear to the spine ends, a few faint marks, an excellent copy. Published under the pseudonym of Robert Tressall, later corrected to Tressell when the unexpurgated version was finally published just over 40 years later, the book was written by the Irish author Robert Coker, who later went by the surname Noonan. Very much a work of working class fiction, written by a painter and decorator and set in a fictional working class town - Mugsborough - the work was politically radical. The author struggled to have the book published in his lifetime and only after his demise in 1911 was his daughter, Kathleen, able to bring the original manuscript to the attention of the publishers Grant Richards. This first edition was much edited by her friend Jessie Pope, presumably to make it more palatable to the more bourgeois book buying public. Nonetheless, its socialist credentials stood out and the book proved hugely influential, decades later George Orwell in the Manchester Evening News recommended it as "a book that everyone should read"

London, Frederick George Shaw [chez l'auteur]. 1914 - Fred. G. SHAW THE COMPLETE SCIENCE OF FLY FISHING AND SPINNING. By Fred. G. Shaw, F.G.S., Assoc. M. Inst. FIRST PRINTING, FIRST ISSUE. EXEMPLAIRE DE DÉDICACE AVEC ENVOI AUTOGRAPHE DE L'AUTEUR A M. HENRY COOPER. DEDICATED BY THE AUTHOR TO MR. HENRY COOPER. Bel envoi autographe de l'auteur : "To Henry Cooper with the best wishes of the author. May 12. 1915". On joint une lettre en partie dactylographiée et autographe adressée au même : "Dear Mr. Cooper, I hope you will forgive me for suggesting that you should take any worry and trouble on your shoulders with regard to my new book. I thought you had some Club Room or central place where your members went for their flies, and that it would be an easy matter just to leave notice of my new book there. I hope you will do me the honour to accept the copy I am sending, and I am venturing to put my name inside the cover." [suivent quelques mots autographes]. L'exemplaire a ensuite été offert par Mr. Henry Cooper à son ami R. Stimson (Glenmount, Grande Parade, Leigh-on-Sea, Essex) : "to his dear friend R. Stimson Esq. with his gest wished for his success as a fly fisherman (July 4. 1917.)" Frederick George Shaw a écrit plusieurs ouvrages sur des sujets très divers : "Our future existence, or the death-surviving consciousness of man" (1912) ; Comets and their tails and the Gegenschein light ; Fiscal facts and fictions. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The Life of Sir Frederick Weld, GCMG: A Pioneer of Empire

John Murray, London 1914 - When Weld arrived in Singapore in 1880 to take over as Governor of the Straits Settlements, he had already had a distinguished political and colonial career. He was an MP in New Zealand's first Parliament and later prime minister. He had also been Governor of Western Australia. His main distinction during his near decade as Governor, based in Singapore, was to adopt a slightly less interventionist approach with regard to Malay rulers on the peninsula than had previously been advocated. At the same time many of his policies led to greater exploitation of the peninsula's resources. Weld was the first Governor under whom Hugh Clifford, who has written a foreword, served. 427 pages including an index and 13 black and white plates. Weight: 0.9.kg. * Post free within Malaysia. The spine has been slightly sunned, the corners have a bit of bumping and the gilt lettering and crest on the front are still bright. The first and last end papers have heavy tanning, otherwise the binding is tight and the text clear with mild tanning throughout. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
