Photo-Documentation of Occupational Therapy for Wounded and Mentally Ill Soldiers of World War I, in Transylvania Between 1914-1917

Dated between 1914 and 1918 in Kolozsvár - 22 original, vintage, black and white photographs, mounted on cardboard. Many labelled on verso in Hungarian some in German, these inscriptions imply that the photographs belonged to Mrs. Zsigmond Zombory, the developer and leader of the therapy. Many photos are labelled by her, and some of the images were probably exhibited in Germany in München. Various image sizes: 15,5-18 × 21-24 cm. Occupational therapy and handicraft programs, like woodworking or basket making, became important and known as a health care profession in the Progressive Era of the first decades of the 20th century, and successfully developed as a rehabilitation method during the First World War. It used the ideas of the Arts and Crafts Movement, claimed that the occupation of the patient's body and mind fastens the recovery process. This was considered rather important in the armies of World War I, to make the soldiers return to the battlefield as quickly as possible. Most of the evidences of the use of occupational therapy during WWI are related to the Allied Powers especially to the US Army, which makes this unique photographic documentation particularly important and interesting, as it proves the very early occurrence of the method in the army of the Central Powers. The method was developed, and the therapy was led by Mrs. Zsigmond Zombory in Kolozsvár (Transylvania; today Cluj-Napoca, Romania) the city that served as military medical centre during the war. This collection of photographs belonged to her, and were presented as illustrations for an exhibition probably in Münich, Germany. Mrs. Zombory began the therapy already in September 1914 (img. I.), and soon more the 400 (img. I. 1.) Hungarian and German (img. I.3) soldiers participated in the program. The project enjoyed the support of both the civilian (img. I.10) and military leaders (img. II.), and covered the entire city. Many public buildings of Kolozsvár served as medical treatment facility and even children from the local elementary school participated in it with a contribution of making mat slippers for the patients (img. I.6). The program was extended geographically too, the handicrafts were exhibited in nearby cities (img. III. and IV.). Very less is known about Mrs. Zombory the socially aware noble woman and we could not trace any documentation of her therapy in Kolozsvár during WWI. The majority of the images are in good, very good condition, some faded, few rubbed. Cardboards stained, chipped, worn. 2 board broken that effects the photo. Please ask for detailed condition report! 22 original, vintage, black and white photographs, mounted on cardboard. Many labelled on verso in Hungarian some in German, these inscriptions imply that the photographs belonged to Mrs. Zsigmond Zombory, the developer and leader of the therapy. Many photos are labelled by her, and some of the images were probably exhibited in Germany in München. [Attributes: First Edition]

London: Grant Richards,, 1914. Octavo. Original red cloth, titles to upper board and spine gilt. With the dust jacket. Housed in a cloth slipcase. The H. Bradley Martin copy (item #2964), with his bookplate to the front pastedown. Spine and edges slightly darkened; lower fore-edge and heel of spine very lightly frayed; some professional internal restoration. First edition, first impression; one of 746 sets of sheets bound by Richards and issued in London on 15 June 1914, with the balance of the 1,250 printed shipped to Huebsch in New York, where it was published sometime between 15 December 1916 and 1 January 1917. This is a review copy, with the review slip loosely inserted requesting that no reviews appear before its London publication date. Although never published, the collection had been printed before, by George Roberts at Maunsel, the Dublin publishers who by July 1910 had destroyed an entire edition of 1,000 because of "objectionable passages", inciting Joyce's pasquinade "Gas from a Burner". The collection contains Joyce's masterpiece in the short form, "The Dead". Copies in surviving dust jackets are notably rare.

[Photo Album]: Life at Agnes Memorial Tuberculosis Sanatorium

Denver, Colorado. 1914-1915. Oblong octavo. String-tied black cloth over paper boards with "Photographs" stamped in gilt on the front board. A collection of 67 sepia toned photographs measuring 3" x 4" with captions. Wear at the extremities of the album and a cord replace, still near fine with the photos fine. A photographic account of Meriwether's stay at a Tuberculosis sanatorium. Agnes Memorial Sanatorium, now part of the Lowry Air Force Base, was a non-profit, a medical campus for low-income, early-onset tuberculosis victims who could probably be successfully treated and returned to work. The complex was built in 1902 on what is now Sixth Avenue in Denver's Lowry neighborhood by Lawrence C. Philips as a charitable endeavor in honor of his mother who had died of TB. Philips began his career as a clerk at Carnegie Steel and worked his way up to become the company's first vice-president. He subsequently moved to Colorado where he became a noted philanthropist and served as a senator from 1918 to 1930.The photographs are mostly captioned and show the facilities buildings, staff, and patients. A number of the photographs show patients engaged in recreation including shooting, billiards, Halloween festivities (some in blackface), and Christmas parties as well as resting and dining in bed. A fascinating archive of quality restorative medical care for the "White Plague." .

Limited edition of 225 copies, this one number 71. Presentation copy signed by Lucien Vogel. Sports & Divertissements is a striking collaboration combining Satie's masterly avant-garde compositions with Martin's playful designs. Gillmor characterised these piano pieces as Satie's 'finest creative achievement, a superb marriage of style and idea, a crystallization of virtually everything that had preceded it, the purest distillation of an aesthetic ideal toward which he had been groping for a quarter century'. Martin, one of the most distinctive Art Deco illustrators, contributed to Gazette du Bon Ton, Harper's Bazar and many of the most luxurious publications of the age. A trade issue comprising just one plate was also published, with which this edition is sometimes confused. Gillmor, 'Musico-Poetic Form', in Canadian Music University Review 8, 30.         Amantium Irae. Letters to Two Friends 1864-1867.

Doves Press, Hammersmith 1914 - One of only 150 copies, the smallest limitation of all the Doves Press books. Photogravure portrait frontispiece. Printed in red and black. 8vo., original limp vellum by the Doves Bindery. Very good. Inscribed by Cobden-Sanderson, interestingly in the year before the official publication date, to Maude Stanley "in memoriam from her old affectionate friend, the writer C-S 14 October 1913". Maude Stanley (1833-1915) was Lady Amberley's sister and an important women's welfare activist - described by her nephew, the Amberley's son Bertrand Russell as "stern and gloomy aunt Maude" although he adored her and her talking parrot. The book is an attractive printing of letters from Cobden-Sanderson to his dear friends, Lord and Lady Amberley between 1864 and 1867. The letters begin when they were unmarried but C-S's friend The Hon. Lady Katherine Stanley, a campaigner for women's suffrage, married Lord Amberley in late 1864 and died in 1874, Lord Amberley died in 1876 and this is his tribute to them. The letters are spririted and extraordinary and a great insight into Cobden-Sanderson's thoughts including 2 printings of his abstract pen sketches of his state of mind which are as one might imagine with statements like "We must endure the dull & dreary monotony until the young shoots appear, the germs of a new era of Belief and fiery Energy, whtn the fabled gods shall have entirely anished and man be striking on in harmony with the deep buried music of the world! Adieu! I am blank today & shallow & stupid, but from the depths of it all look up to the light for something god-like indeed to set me on fire"

L'ILLUSTRATION. Dessins, documents photographiques, cartes, panoramas.

LIBROS ANTIGUOS

Provenance: Rudolf Mekicki (1887-1942) was a Lvov heraldic artist, collector and designer of bookplates, book covers, bonds and banknotes who provided the institutions and collectors of the capital of Galicia with bookplates. His wife Julia, son (Stanislaw) and daughter (Krystina, died in 2010) continued in this tradition, designing and collecting bookplates. Not in Thieme-Becker; OCLC locates copies in the Getty, and in NUKAT (including the Polish National Library); not in the Leo Baeck Institute (who have a Lilien collection), COPAC or the British Library.

Die Nordströmsche Gravitationstheorie vom Standpunkt des absoluten Differentialkalküls,’ pp. 321-328 in Annalen der Physik, 4. Folge, Band 44, Heft 2.

Leipzig: Johann Ambrosius Barth 1914 - Complete journal issue, 8vo, pp. 177-336. Original printed wrappers (one leaf at front and five leaves at rear), front wrapper with a few small chips (no loss of text), spine worn with some loss of paper (just affecting the ‘A’ in Annalen). First edition, of “considerable interest in the history of general relativity because it contains Einstein’s first treatment of a gravitation theory in which general covariance is strictly obeyed . and particularly notable for its new derivation of the field equations” (Pais, Subtle is the Lord, p. 236). Although Einstein and Grossmann had made significant progress with their ‘Entwurf’ theory of 1913, using the tensor calculus of Levi-Civita and Ricci, it was still a theory in which the equivalence principle in general did not hold (i.e., under particular coordinate transformations the gravitational field equations were not covariant). Einstein attempted to give various ‘physical’ arguments in order to account for this deficiency, but an important step towards obtaining general covariance was made when Einstein and Fokker, the next year, examined an alternative gravitational theory, in the framework of tensor calculus, and found that using just the condition that the velocity of light is constant, and independent of the position of the physical point, they were able to derive generally covariant field equations for this theory. “After the Einstein-Grossmann (1913) paper, Einstein’s next significant references to the curvature tensor and general covariance occur in a paper that Einstein wrote early in 1914 together with a young Dutch physicist, Adriaan D. Fokker. This paper is a discussion of a gravitational theory proposed by Gunnar Nordström, a Finnish physicist then working on the problem of finding a gravitational theory compatible with the principles of special relativity. Einstein and Fokker showed that Nordström’s scalar theory can be rewritten as a metric theory of gravitation [i.e., in the framework of tensor calculus], using only generally covariant equations, if one assumes that the metric tensor is conformally related to the Minkowski metric tensor of special relativity. They phrased the latter requirement as follows: ‘Nordström’s theory is based on the assumption that, by proper choice of reference system, it is possible to satisfy the principle of the constancy of the velocity of light’. Thus, they not only assumed the metric tensor to be conformally Minkowskian, but also adopted conformally Cartesian coordinates” (Stachel: Einstein and the History of General Relativity, p. 82). “They derived its basic equations [the gravitational field equations of Nordström’s theory] in in a very simple way, directly from the condition of the constant velocity of light and Lorentz covariance. This was an important step towards the final tensor equations of general relativity of November 1915” (Einstein Studies, vol. 10, p. 285). Einstein and Fokker concluded their paper remarking that it might be possible that a similar derivation of the field equations would be possible in the Einstein-Grossmann theory without need of the previous physical assumptions. “Thus, early in 1914, just fifty years after Maxwell’s first attempt at a gravitation field theory, Einstein was not quite there but he was closing in, as the final remark of the Einstein-Fokker paper clearly indicates.” (Pais, p. 237). I sent a short paper to Punnet, of Cambridge, England, some months ago, pointing out how the results of my work and that of others was dead against the Cambridge hypothesis of somatic segregation, but he did not care to publish it. It seems to me strange that a critical biologist like Bateson should have led his followers in the assumption of such an unsupported and barren hypothesis. Columbia University is leading the world in this line of work. Yours truly, John Belling Botanist? ?Bridges was an American scientist, known for his contributions to the field of genetics.         Internationale Arbeiter Chronik [International Labor Chronicle] - Group of 6 Issues

New York: Max Baginski, 1914. Near-complete run of this short-lived radical journal, published by the German-born anarchist, editor, and co-founder of Mother Earth. Baginski emigrated to the U.S. from Berlin in 1893, eventually moving from Chicago to New York with his companion Millie Schumm and settling on Emma Goldman's farm in Ossining. He was part of the group that planned the production of the journal that would become Mother Earth - a publication for which he would contribute to extensively. In New York he worked as a publicist for various left journals, including a number of German-language workers' papers like his own Internationale Arbeiter Chronik, an anarchist montly newspaper. Published between March and September, 1914, Baginski's paper reproduced writings by Johann Most, Karl Marx, Mikhail Bakunin, and Friedrich Nietzsche, articles on syndicalism, anarchist events in the U.S. and abroad, poetry, and current events, with increasing attention to the effects of the World War on the worker. Erste Ausgabe des zweiten Teils von Moseleys berühmter Arbeit zur Bestimmung der Ordnungszahl der Elemente, ein Meilenstein in der Entwicklung der Atomphysik. - "Moseley, working under Rutherford in Manchester, used the method of X-ray spectroscopy devised by the Braggs to calculate variations in the wavelength of the rays emitted by each element. These he was able to arrange in a series according to the nuclear charge of each element. Thus if the nuclear charge of hydrogen is 1, in helium it is 2, in lithium 3, and so on by regular progression to uranium as 92. These figures Moseley called atomic numbers. He pointed out that they also represented a corresponding increase in extra-nuclear electrons and that it is the number and arrangement of these electrons rather than the atomic weight that determines the properties of an element. It was now possible to base the periodical table on a firm foundation, and to state with confidence that the number of elements up to uranium is limited to 92. When Moseley's table was completed, six atomic numbers had no corresponding elements; but Moseley himself was able to predict the nature of four of the missing elements" (PMM). - Gut erhalten. - DSB 9, 542; PMM 407; Norman 1559 [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
