The Life, Letters And Laours Of Francis Galton.

At The Univesity Press 19141930, Cambridge - Three volumes in four. First edition. Sm.4to., orig. blue cloth (volume 1 in dark blue, the remainder in lighter blue), gilt stamped bust of Galton on the upper boards, (xxiv), 246, (2); (xii), (426); xii, 438, (2); (6), (441-673, (3), (8) With five folding tables in a pocket at the rear of volume one; two charts in a pocket in volume two, and numerous portraits and plates. Some light wear to the spine ends of volume one, which also has some rubbing but is very good, the other three volumes are near fine. "A relative of famed naturalist Charles Darwin, Francis Galton spent much of his life dedicated to research and critical inquiries into several different subject areas, from exploration to eugenics to weather to fingerprints.Strongly influenced by Charles Darwin's The Origin of Species (1859), Galton developed his own theories on inherited traits. He studied identical twins, and worked on the first intelligence test in his exploration of the roles of "nature and nurture"ùa phrase created by Galtonùin human attributes. According to some sources, Galton also coined the term "eugenics," a controversial field of study about selective breeding in humans to produce preferred traits. Galton spent much of his life studying heredity and eugenics, and he later thought that a person's fingerprints might be a part of human genetic puzzle. He thought that these prints might provide information on differences between people, from race to moral character to intelligence. While he never made any discoveries in this area, Galton established a fingerprint classification system that is still in use today." (University College, London).         2 autograph manuscripts, both signed on flyleaf ("Prof. Dr. F. Hasenöhrl").

Vienna, 1907-1914. - 4to. 2 vols. (1), 314, (1) pp.; 2 ff. of equations inserted loosely. 260 [but 248: page count jumps from 229 to 240; 1 revised leaf removed by author after numbering the pages], (3) pp. Black ink on squared paper, occasional additions and notes in pencil and red or blue crayon. Includes numerous diagrams (some nearly full-page). Contemp. half calf with giltstamped spine title "Vorlesungen Mechanik I. [bzw. II.] F.H.". All edges red. Hasenöhrl's Mechanics lecture manuscripts, used and revised throughout the great physicist's last seven years of work, mainly composed in 1907/08 and bound for the author around that time. His name is on the flyleaf in his own hand: "Prof. Dr. F. Hasenöhrl / Wien, Universität". The volumes comprise the complete first two lectures (Mechanics and Continuum Mechanics) of Hasenöhrl's four-year cycle, which also included Electrodynamics, Theory of Heat, and Optics. - Volume 1 contains "Vorlesung über Mechanik der starren Systeme. Gehalten fünfstündig im Wintersemester 1907/8 (vom Beginn 24. X, bis 14. II.)" (a piece of information that contradicts Bittner's statement [p. 335] that Hasenöhrl did not teach that winter semester). The first session was Hasenöhrl's inaugural lecture at Vienna University. He inherited Boltzmann's chair, who had taken his life in Duino in the fall of 1906. In the appointment process for the successor to Boltzmann, Hasenöhrl had prevailed against his older colleagues Max Planck and Wilhelm Wien. Appropriately, this inaugural lecture, the only one largely written in shorthand, is an obituary of his predecessor (not identical with his Boltzmann obituary published in "Elektrotechnik und Maschinenbau" 41 [1906]). The remaining 28 chapters include "Kinematik des Punktes", Lagrange's equations, "Hamiltons partielle Differentialgleichung", and the theories of relative and cyclical movement. Red crayon markings indicate the progress made from session to session; individual problems are marked as having been treated in the seminary course rather than in the lecture hall. At the end (p. 305 ff.), Hasenöhrl has included the changes made for the 1910/11 winter semester (according to Bittner, Hasenöhrl again repeated the lecture in 1913/14). - Volume II contains the two-semester "Vorlesung über Mechanik der deformablen Körper" (winter semester of 1907/08: Elasticity; summer semester of 1908: Hydromechanics, of which latter course two weeks were lost due to the great student strike). Hasenöhrl prefixed a motto from Guido Ubaldi's "Paraphrasis in duos Archimedis aequeponderantium libros" (1588): "Quapropter ad Archimedem confugiendum est, si vera huius scientiae principia perdiscere cupimus." This volume likewise contains final changes made in 1911, constituting a thorough revision of pp. 90-101. In the summer of 1914 he revised the "slipshod pages 183 ff." about ray formation, which are partly struck out (p. 183f.), partly removed altogether (p. 185f.; the leaf is missing save for a narrow guard); these notes are followed by the sections "Allgemeines über Bewegung mit Rotationssym[m]etrie" and "Kreisförmige Wirbel" (13 pp. in total). Shortly before the end of the semester, the First World War erupted. Hasenöhrl, whose mother was descended from the old military nobility, volunteered for the infantry and was decorated after an injury in July 1915. In a battle near Folgaria he was killed by a shell splinter to his head on 7 October. - Although Hasenöhrl always spoke freely during his lectures (cf. Bittner, 198), rather than reading out a written text, as many of his colleagues did, it is clear that his presentation was based on minutely prepared notes. So closely did he compress the subject matter of his lectures that each session usually comprises a mere four to six pages in the manuscript; and still, we find in the text many tidily formulated paragraphs, including digressions on themes such as Sven Hedin's observations on the rivers of Tibet, which, when flowing south-north, are deflected eas [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Versand D: 8,00 EUR

MADONNA ALBUM [Cover Title]. [Original Scrapbook Album]

[Massachusetts], [ca. 1914]. First Edition. Wraps. Very good +. Oblong folio. Commercial string-tied album. Cloth covered, limp card boards. Gilt lettering to front. 50 leaves holding a single portrait photograph and 194 clipped artwork reproductions within hand-cut corner mounts at rectos and versos. Each page with ornate outlining and calligraphic titling in white album pen. Loose tissue guards between leaves intact. Mild handling wear. One clipped element perished. Overall clean, well preserved. Very good or better in a custom archival clamshell box. A hand-accented gift scrapbook of religious iconography created and presented by Julia Morin to her brother, Reverend William Morin upon the occasion of his ordination. Populated with reproductions of the masterworks of Christian art by Bellini, Gaddi, Titian, Correggio, Raphael, Del Sarto, Renni, Rubens, Rembrandt, Hoffman, among others, each page is carefully engrossed with exquisite titles and borders. Plates likely clipped from THE PERRY MAGAZINE FOR SCHOOL AND HOME, a Boston-based periodical of the era which reproduced fine works of art for use in education. Several instances of hand-colored covering-over an otherwise nude baby Jesus add a note of reverential modesty. Julia's inscription to the cover identifies her as a 1914 graduate of St. Ann's Convent, presumably of Readville, MA. Historical references cite William as having ministered to congregations near Boston, Fitchburg, and North Adams. A touching and lovingly-assembled folk book.

[Photo Album]: Construction of the St. Lawrence Pulp & Lumber Corporation Plant

Chandler, Quebec: Aberthaw Construction Company. 1914. Oblong small octavo. Measuring 5.5" x 7". String tied album without boards. Contains 118 sepia toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring 3.75" x 4.75", with captions. Lacking the boards thus good only with near fine photographs.A photo album kept by an employee for the Aberthaw Construction Company of Boston, shortened here as A.C. Co., while working on the construction of the St. Lawrence Pulp & Lumber Corporation Plant between 1913 and 1914. The album begins with a schematic entitled "Job 993 Pabos Mills, P.Q. Progress Sheet." The page details an expansive plant that was to be built over the next year which included a saw mill, electrolytic plant, hot pond, and pulp storage, among other things. The men working on the project were given onsite housing including "married quarters," an "engineer house," as well as a section of the camp which contained a large community of Italian workers dubbed "little Italy." The site also came equipped with a company store. The album documents views of the worker's quarters as well as the progress of the construction. Early photos show the temporary saw mill, the excavation of the main boiler house, and construction of the pulp storage building. The photos show the men on the site with drills and other construction equipment working throughout the year. One photo is captioned "quarry before blast" and another from August 13, 1913 reads "building site looking East." There are also photos of the horses that were used to cart away debris. A railroad was also built to haul supplies to the plant. A photo here shows a locomotive wreck at the site. The men were together for nearly two years, the project was supposed to be completed in September of 1915, and created a small community which is seen throughout the album. There are photos of the Italian men getting paid, the cook shack, the living room of the engineering house, and the hotel on the site. One photo shows two men in an early automobile and another shows a man in winter clothes posing outside the construction office. There are also photos of the natural sights of the area including snapshots of snow covered trees, a dam at a nearby reservoir, and the North River. A section from the 1919 edition of Concrete Magazine discusses "Concrete Construction during Winter" and cites the Aberthaw job at the paper plant as an example. "Among many jobs successfully handled in winter a notable one handled by the Aberthaw Construction Co was the large pulp mill of the St. Lawrence Pulp & Lumber Corp at Chandler Quebec. [It] started in the late summer and carried through a severe Canadian winter with temperatures as low as 25 below. One saving feature of the work was that some of the buildings had wood roofs and by taking advantage of the best weather and placing concrete on the warmest days the men were kept busy on roof construction and other items on days when concrete could not be handled." They continue by saying that since "extraordinary supervision was exercised" the plant was built on time and without a hitch. An extensive collection of construction snapshots in Canada in 1914. .

East of the Sun and West of the Moon: Old Tales From the North

London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1914. First Trade. Hardcover. Very Good. NIELSEN, Kay. 206 p. 25 tipped in colour plates and over 25 b&w drawings by Kay Nielsen. Pictorial endpapers. Blue cloth hardcover with gold impressing. Small stain on frontispiece tissue guard. Thumbing and minor stains scattered throughout. Peter Christen Asbjornsen (1812-1885) and Jorgen Engebretsen Moe (1813-1882) were scholars and collectors of Norwegian folklore. To Norwegians, the names Asbjornsen and Moe have become synonymous with traditional folk tales, the way the name "Brothers Grimm" is associated with German tales. This collection of 15 Norwegian folk tales includes all of Kay Nielsen's original 25 colour plates and the black and white illustrations. Nielsen (1886-1957) was a Danish illustrator known for his Art Nouveau style (see the Art Nouveau troll on page 176). This is a great book from the "golden age of illustration" which began c. 1900 when printing technology developed to the point that drawings and paintings could be reproduced with reasonable facility. The age lasted until c.1930, after which rising costs made such beautiful books unaffordable for much of the public. The stories combine realism with the supernatural in a combination sometimes strange, sometimes humorous.

Photo-Documentation of Occupational Therapy for Wounded and Mentally Ill Soldiers of World War I, in Transylvania Between 1914-1917

Dated between 1914 and 1918 in Kolozsvár - 22 original, vintage, black and white photographs, mounted on cardboard. Many labelled on verso in Hungarian some in German, these inscriptions imply that the photographs belonged to Mrs. Zsigmond Zombory, the developer and leader of the therapy. Many photos are labelled by her, and some of the images were probably exhibited in Germany in München. Various image sizes: 15,5-18 × 21-24 cm. Occupational therapy and handicraft programs, like woodworking or basket making, became important and known as a health care profession in the Progressive Era of the first decades of the 20th century, and successfully developed as a rehabilitation method during the First World War. It used the ideas of the Arts and Crafts Movement, claimed that the occupation of the patient's body and mind fastens the recovery process. This was considered rather important in the armies of World War I, to make the soldiers return to the battlefield as quickly as possible. Most of the evidences of the use of occupational therapy during WWI are related to the Allied Powers especially to the US Army, which makes this unique photographic documentation particularly important and interesting, as it proves the very early occurrence of the method in the army of the Central Powers. The method was developed, and the therapy was led by Mrs. Zsigmond Zombory in Kolozsvár (Transylvania; today Cluj-Napoca, Romania) the city that served as military medical centre during the war. This collection of photographs belonged to her, and were presented as illustrations for an exhibition probably in Münich, Germany. Mrs. Zombory began the therapy already in September 1914 (img. I.), and soon more the 400 (img. I. 1.) Hungarian and German (img. I.3) soldiers participated in the program. The project enjoyed the support of both the civilian (img. I.10) and military leaders (img. II.), and covered the entire city. Many public buildings of Kolozsvár served as medical treatment facility and even children from the local elementary school participated in it with a contribution of making mat slippers for the patients (img. I.6). The program was extended geographically too, the handicrafts were exhibited in nearby cities (img. III. and IV.). Very less is known about Mrs. Zombory the socially aware noble woman and we could not trace any documentation of her therapy in Kolozsvár during WWI. The majority of the images are in good, very good condition, some faded, few rubbed. Cardboards stained, chipped, worn. 2 board broken that effects the photo. Please ask for detailed condition report! 22 original, vintage, black and white photographs, mounted on cardboard. Many labelled on verso in Hungarian some in German, these inscriptions imply that the photographs belonged to Mrs. Zsigmond Zombory, the developer and leader of the therapy. Many photos are labelled by her, and some of the images were probably exhibited in Germany in München. [Attributes: First Edition]

London: Grant Richards,, 1914. Octavo. Original red cloth, titles to upper board and spine gilt. With the dust jacket. Housed in a cloth slipcase. The H. Bradley Martin copy (item #2964), with his bookplate to the front pastedown. Spine and edges slightly darkened; lower fore-edge and heel of spine very lightly frayed; some professional internal restoration. First edition, first impression; one of 746 sets of sheets bound by Richards and issued in London on 15 June 1914, with the balance of the 1,250 printed shipped to Huebsch in New York, where it was published sometime between 15 December 1916 and 1 January 1917. This is a review copy, with the review slip loosely inserted requesting that no reviews appear before its London publication date. Although never published, the collection had been printed before, by George Roberts at Maunsel, the Dublin publishers who by July 1910 had destroyed an entire edition of 1,000 because of "objectionable passages", inciting Joyce's pasquinade "Gas from a Burner". The collection contains Joyce's masterpiece in the short form, "The Dead". Copies in surviving dust jackets are notably rare.

[Photo Album]: Life at Agnes Memorial Tuberculosis Sanatorium

Denver, Colorado. 1914-1915. Oblong octavo. String-tied black cloth over paper boards with "Photographs" stamped in gilt on the front board. A collection of 67 sepia toned photographs measuring 3" x 4" with captions. Wear at the extremities of the album and a cord replace, still near fine with the photos fine. A photographic account of Meriwether's stay at a Tuberculosis sanatorium. Agnes Memorial Sanatorium, now part of the Lowry Air Force Base, was a non-profit, a medical campus for low-income, early-onset tuberculosis victims who could probably be successfully treated and returned to work. The complex was built in 1902 on what is now Sixth Avenue in Denver's Lowry neighborhood by Lawrence C. Philips as a charitable endeavor in honor of his mother who had died of TB. Philips began his career as a clerk at Carnegie Steel and worked his way up to become the company's first vice-president. He subsequently moved to Colorado where he became a noted philanthropist and served as a senator from 1918 to 1930.The photographs are mostly captioned and show the facilities buildings, staff, and patients. A number of the photographs show patients engaged in recreation including shooting, billiards, Halloween festivities (some in blackface), and Christmas parties as well as resting and dining in bed. A fascinating archive of quality restorative medical care for the "White Plague." .
