[Part 4 of] The Golden Bough: Adonis Attis Osiris Studies in the History of Oriental Religion

London: Macmillan and Co, Limited,, 1914. Third edition, Revised and Enlarged. 2 volumes, octavo. Original dark green cloth, titles gilt to spines, large rectangular gilt block of mistletoe tracery on front boards. With the typographical dust jackets. Engraved frontispiece with tissue guard to Volume I. Spine of Volume 1 a little rolled, faint marks to boards, slight tanning to free endpapers. A very good copy in bright jackets with vertical creases where they were once folded inside the books Part 4 of the definitive third edition of Frazer's classic work of social anthropology. With the author's clipped signature dated 19 February 1921 mounted to both front pastedowns. First published as a two-volume work in 1890 the Golden Bough was expanded to 12 volumes in the third edition (a supplementary thirteenth volume, entitled Aftermath, was published in 1936). "Frazer's true subject is nothing less than humanity's long upward struggle towards an understanding of itself and the world. In Frazer's view that movement towards the light began in earliest times with the priest?king employing magic to compel the gods to do his bidding, followed by a religious stage in which humans admit their powerlessness and now beseech rather than command the gods. Thus for Frazer religion is a necessary stage in mental evolution, but one that is based on mistaken premisses; it has now in turn been superseded by a world-view based on rationality: positive science. In focusing on the pattern of the dying and reviving god that lay at the heart of the religions of the ancient Mediterranean, while never mentioning Christianity, Frazer was more than a little disingenuous. In truth he was engaged all the while in a covert campaign against religion in general and Christianity in particular and may perhaps be seen, along with H. G. Wells, as the most important exponent of secularism in the twentieth century" (ODNB). Scarce with signature.

        Scultura futurista Boccioni

Libreria della "Voce" (Stab. Tipografico Aldino), 1914. (Simone Facchinetti in D.B.I., LXV, 2005). Cammarota, Futurismo, 279.1. Salaris, Bibliografia, p. 111a. Italiano

Typed Letter, Signed, to Lippmann, June 10, 1914.

1914. Friendly Letter from Hand to Walter Lippmann Regarding Socialism and the (Often Dreary) Life of a Judge Hand, Learned [1872-1961]. [Lippmann, Walter (1889-1974)]. [Typed Letter, Signed, To Lippmann, On U.S. District Court Letterhead, June 10, 1914]. Two 10-1/2" x 8" sheets. Some toning, fold lines, two vertical and one horizontal, a few minor corrections by Hand, letter signed L.H. * A friendly letter from of the most significant American jurists of the twentieth century to one of its most influential journalists. Hand, a judge of the U.S. Southern District of New York, later a judge of the Court of Appeals, Second Circuit, was renowned for his judgments, which were also admired for their lucidity and elegance. Lippmann, a writer, reporter, editor and syndicated political commentator, was a highly influential figure in political life and one of the first to introduce the concept of the Cold War. In this letter Hand touches on social matters, mentioning that "Felix [Frankfurter] is back in town," and laments, humorously, the drudgery of faced by judges, "most of whose living hours are consumed in reading testimony. I know see why people in former times went to such extravagances in telling judges what great men they were. If they had not baited the hook in some such way the poor suckers would never have bitten." He also teases Lippmann for joining the Socialist Party and defends his allegiance to Progressivism: "I do not like your political sneers and I do not think they are sincere. My Progressive flag is nailed to the mast and I propose to play the Star Spangled Banner while the ship sinks. My position in the band is to beat the bass drum softly. I don't know what position you have in the Socialist Party; I suspect it is in the last line of the water carriers, with a distinct tendency to desert, at that." As the tone of this letter indicates, Hand and Lippmann were good friends, and would remain so until Hand's death in 1961.

        Group of three inscribed works.

New York: The Macmillan Company,, 1914-1920. The Congo: The Chinese Nightingale; The Golden Book of Springfield. 3 volumes octavo (188 × 123 mm). Uniformly bound in contemporary black hard-grained morocco, titles gilt to spines, low bands, devices to the compartments, gilt panels to the boards, recipient's monogram within a laurel wreath to the front boards, marbled endpapers. City flag in colours to the title page of the last-named. Lightly rubbed at the extremities, pale toning of the text-blocks, but overall very good. The first and last first editions, the second the ?third printing of 1919, first published 1917. All three in bindings for Thomas Rénaud Rutter, and each signed and inscribed by Lindsay on the first blanks, the first to Renaud's mother, Mrs. Louise Warren Rutter, with her bookplate to verso of the front free endpaper facing; the second with "My most fraternal good wishes to Thomas Rutter"; the last "Good wishes and good will to Thomas Rutter" with the first three lines from Lindsay's ambiguous pæan to the city of both his and Rutter's birth, "Magical Springfield": "In this - the city of my discontent/Sometimes there comes a whisper from the grass/ Romance, romance is here", initialled verso of the front free endpaper. Both of these with Rutter's nautically-themed bookplate. Springfield native Thomas Rénaud Rutter, the son of tea importer and engineer J.E.T. Rutter, was a Princeton-educated lawyer who at one time served on the staff of the Judge Advocate General of the U.S. Army, before becoming an attorney for the American Sugar Refining Co. He retired to California in 1927, sometime commodore of the Newport Beach Yacht Club. All of the inscriptions are dated May 12 1921 in Plainsfiled, NJ, home town of his wife Abbie, née Holstein. A not unattractively, if rather stiffly, bound group of the works of the "Prairie Troubadour", who was famed for his declamatory, performance poetry, with a pleasing Springfield association.

Corrispondenza autografa firmata, circa cinquanta pagine. 1914-1925.

1914. RUSSO Ferdinando. Posso mandarvi i miei libri ?".

(Photograph): Barnes School of Anatomy. Sanitary Science and Embalming. Class of 1914. Chicago, Illinois

Chicago: Barnes School of Anatomy. 1914. Large poster or broadside. 28" x 22". Thick board with 21 adhesive mounted oval gelatin silver photographs, most measuring approximately 4" x 3". Titles and captions in manuscript. Moderate edge wear, several small damp stains, none affecting images, 3" diagonal tear at middle top edge, crudely repaired on verso; horizontal crack on verso neatly repaired. The images show three administrators or teachers, and 18 students, each neatly identified in ink beneath their photos. Interestingly, three of the students are African-American men, and another two are Caucasian females. African-American men had been involved in the embalming business since it first became popular in the United States around the end of the Civil War but women were usually relegated to the background. That changed in 1901 when Lina Odou, a French nurse who trained with Florence Nightingale opened an embalming school for women in New York City.Presumably unique. .

[ 1928]. - Color pictorial / pictographic map sheet 29 1/4 x 36 1/2 inches, originally folded as issued, now professionally restored and mounted on linen. Tiny chips to edges and corners now infilled, light wear and separations to folds all professionally restored and virtually invisible, the poster appearing fresh and clean. Originally published in 1914 as an advertising poster for the London Underground, this design proved so popular that it was subsequently in several different editions. It has been suggested (on the blog of Tim Bryars) that this particular edition with an image of a greyhound and "On to Wembley" at the upper left of the map was issued at the time of the introduction of greyhound racing at Wembley in December 1927 "with a dog named Spin winning the very first race." The greyhound's jacket in the print carries the letter 'S' endorsing this suggestion. An outstanding and innovative graphic - an explosion of color and humor - the poster sparked a revival in interest in decorative cartography around the world which continues today, a century later.       London, Edinburgh and Boston- T N Foulis, 1914 Book. Fine. Hardcover. A beautifully illustrated edition of George Borrow's semi-autobiographicalnovel. In a signed morocco binding by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, gilt stampto front pastedown. With twelve colour illustrated plates tipped in from water colours by Edmund J Sullivan. Lavengro is one of Borrow's best known books. He wrote novels and travelogues based on his experiences travelling around Europe. As a genre, Lavengro falls between a memoir and novel. It has been considered a classic of nineteenth century literature and follows the son of an officer who after servingan apprenticeship as a lawyer, becomes a Grub Street Hack. This allows him to observe London low-life. Throughout the novel theunnamed protagonist meets many Romany travellers, of whom he gives memorable and sympathetic pen-portraits. Condition: In a full morocco binding with gilt stamping to board edges and spine. Binder's stamp in gilt to front pastedown, Sangorski and Sutcliffe. Externally, excellent with minor shelfwear and handling marks. Spine has faded slightly, as expected with this colour. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with the some spots to the endpapers and the odd spot throughout. Overall: FINE..

[Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
