        The Amateur Gentleman

      Little Brown and Company Boston: Little, Brown, and Company. 1913. First. First edition. Illustrated by Herman Pfeifer. Owner name and address on the front fly, else fine in very near fine dustwrapper. Country-bred Englishman inherits a fortune and sets out to become a gentleman, in the pursuit of which he is involved in intrigues, adventures and romance. Basis for several films, a 1920 version directed by Maurice Elvey and featuring Langhorn Burton and Madge Stuart, another in 1926 directed by Sidney Olcott and featuring Richard Barthelmess and Dorothy Dunbar, and best known in the 1936 version directed by Thornton Freeland and featuring Douglas Fairbanks Jr. and Elissa Landi. Exceptionally scarce in jacket. .

        A Study of Maya Art, Its Subject Matter and Historical Development

      Cambridge: Peabody Museum of American Archaeology and Ethnology. 1913. Based on Spinden's 1909 doctoral thesis at Harvard and here Published as Volume VI of the Peabody Museum's Memoirs, this is the seminal study of Maya art and archaeology. Spinden was the first to study the range of Maya art, delineate its subject matter, and identify themes and motifs within the art and architecture of Maya society, including religious and philosophical ideas and calendrical notations. Probably the most important single volume ever published on the Maya. This copy is rebound in green buckram, and extra-annotated and illustrated in at least two hands. A (bookseller's?) note on the front free endpaper suggests the possibility that the annotations were those of the author, and indeed many of them seem to be of the type that an author would do if he were preparing a revised edition of his book. Some of the annotations correct errors in the earlier text, while others add new drawings, commentary or analysis, presumably based on information not available at the time of original publication. No revised edition of A Study of Maya Art was ever produced, however, so there is no corrected or updated text against which to compare this. Spinden, after gaining his PhD at Harvard, became the Assistant Curator of Anthropology at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, and from there went on to become the Curator of Mexican Archaeology and Ethnology at Harvard's Peabody Museum, perhaps the most prestigious post in the country for a Mayanist. Spinden also developed a widely accepted correlation between the Maya calendar and the Western calendar, which was called into question by J. Eric S. Thompson, the British Mayanist. The controversy got heated, and Spinden spent much of the rest of his time devoted to the Maya defending his correlation. It may be this controversy that pre-empted a new edition of his classic study. Thompson's correlation, or one or two days off from it -- Spinden's and Thompson's were 260 years apart -- is widely accepted today, although the issue is not without controversy even now. In any case, this is an extra-annotated copy of the first important work of Maya scholarship and, by all appearances, a unique copy. A bit of wear to the edges of the cloth, overall near fine. .

The adventures and misunderstandings of Panurge and his wife Colombe make excellent operatic comedy. But perhaps the grossièreté of Rabelais is more literary than theatrical. In truth this final endearing comedy, which had to compete for attention with such novelties as Le sacre du printemps when it was first performed, has never been put to a fair test on the stage." It has been re-cased by Paramount Studios ( Kay Nielsen worked for some of the Hollywood Picture Studios for the latter part of his career).164 pages. Ends of spine are very slightly bumped. No inscription or name. Has an identification number on inside of front cover which suggests it may have been in the Paramount Studio's library. Very clean and very tight. There are 24 SUPERB colour illustrations mounted on card with swag decorations and decorated and captioned tissue-guards. All pages have swag decoration and there is a lovely vignette at the head of each story. A beautiful book in VERY GOOD condition.

Presentation copy from Elisabeth Bergner to Sir John Gielgud. A preliminary blank bears an inscription presenting the Book to Bergner in Berlin, 1927, underneath this is an inscription which simply reads: "To John / from Elisabeth / London, Christmas 1973". Elisabeth Bergner (1900, Vienna -1986, London). Famous early German stage actress & film star, made her stage debut in Zurich in 1919, appeared in Vienna, Munich, Berlin, & later on Broadway. Big break in 1924 with stage production of Shaw's Saint Joan. Bergner made several films from 1933 in England & France. Her film Catherine the Great [1934] was banned in Germany for featuring "émigré Jews." At the height of her career, she was called by Alexander Woolcott, "probably the ablest actress living today". Nominated for an Oscar in 1935 for her performance in ESCAPE ME NEVER. A British Citizen since 1938. Sir John Gielgud's copy - completely appropriate & intriguing as Gielgud's career was distinguished by his numerous performances as Hamlet. An important association copy, inscribed to Gielgud from a close friend & important actress.. Signed. 1st Edition.

Complete run of this rare bi- weekly periodical intended for the upper classes in Pre-Revolutionary Russia, 90 numbers in 72 separate issues from December 15, 1913 to September 30, 1917. Devoted to "the beautiful life", mainly in St. Petersburg and Moscow, the journal described the arts, architecture, fashion, decorating, sports events and entertainment available to the nobility and other moneyed classes of that period. Generously illustrated throughout in color and black and white, with numerous tipped-on color plates and the work of such noted artists as Arthur Rackham, W. Heath Robinson, James Montgomery Flagg, others. Includes the truly scarce issue number 55, devoted to the Tsar and his family, that was suppressed by the Bolsheviks. Numbers 1 through 24 [1913-1914] and 49 through 90 [1916- 1917] in separate issues with decorative covers; numbers 25 through 48 [1915] bound in a hardcover volume with original covers removed. Overall condition is fair to good, with numbers 12-13, 14-15, 81-81 and 89-90 in quite rough condition, others generally good with many of the spines reinforced with old paper tape, all issues lightly age-toned with some brittleness that has resulted in some minor chips to the margins, pages mainly good overall. A fascinating view of the Russian upper classes just before their world was to come to a swift and violent end.

Late twentieth century three-quarter tan morocco over marbled boards ruled in blind. Spines with five raised bands decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt, top edge gilt. A fine set.Kirriemuir in Angus, Scotland is the birthplace of Peter Pan's creator, JM Barrie. Barrie was a local handloom-weaver's son, born in a little whitewashed cottage at 9 Brechin Road, which is looked after by the National Trust for Scotland, and displays his writing desk, photos and newspaper clippings. The wash-house outside - romantically billed as Barrie's first "theatre" - was apparently the model for the house built by the Lost Boys for Wendy in Never-Never Land."Sir James Matthew Barrie, 1st Baronet, OM (9 May 1860 – 19 June 1937), more commonly known as J. M. Barrie, was a Scottish novelist and dramatist. He is best remembered for creating Peter Pan, the boy who refused to grow up, whom he based on his friends, the Llewelyn Davies boys. He is also credited with popularizing the name "Wendy," which was uncommon (especially for girls) in both Britain and America before he gave it to the heroine of Peter Pan. New Style” and listing twelve titles already published, beginning with The Tale of Peter Rabbit and ending with The Tale of Timmy Tiptoes under “Series I,” an advertisement on the front flap for “Other Delightful Books for Children by Beatrix Potter” beginning with The Roly-Poly Pudding and ending with The Story of Miss Moppet, and an advertisement on the rear flap for “A First Favourite with Children Peter Rabbit’s Painting Book.” The jacket has only minimal wear to spine extremities, with no loss. Extremely scarce—we have never seen another copy in the jacket. Housed in a full dark green morocco gilt clamshell case.“Miss Moppet in book form is not listed in either the ECB [English Catalogue of Books] or USC [United States Catalogue of Books]. However, the glazed paper dust jacket on No. 11A advertising Miss Moppet and the Fierce Bad Rabbit as ‘now first published in book-form’ also lists Pigling Bland, which was published in 1913.         A History of Chess

Small quarto (10 1/2" x6 3/4") issued in blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine and front cover blind stamped with pictorial chess piece. (Betts: 5-6). 1st edition. The author's aim: "to present as complete a record as possible of the varieties of chess which exist, or have existed, in different parts of the world; to investigate the ultimate origin of these games and the circumstances of the invention of chess; and to trace the development of the modern European game from the first appearance of its ancestor, the Indian Chaturanga". The result is a comprehensive history, based on original sources, from the earliest game to the 19th century. Earlier histories had relied chiefly on the written documents, but here considerable weight is also attached to the philological evidence (i.e. the significance of chess terms in the various languages). Since 1913, Murray's history has been recognized as the standard work of its kind.         Manuscript Medical Notes and Monitoring Chart, a Mourning Document, and Photographs of an Esteemed Surgeon and His Dying Wife

      1913. A mini-archive of Dr. Édouard Schwartz (1852-1925), who was respected surgeon at the famous Hôpital Cochin in Paris, and professor at the Faculty of Medicine. Comprises 4 original photographs of the surgeon, a photographic postcard of his villa in the French Riviera, manuscript treatment notes and a temperature chart for the doctor's wife during her final seventeen days, and a printed condolence card in mourning borders. All text, manuscript and typescript, is in French. Collection of Original Photographs dating from 1894-1918. The earliest is a professional portrait of Doctor Schwartz in 1894 , 8,5 cm x 11,5 cm on gilt-edged photographer's mount. The largest photograph, captioned in manuscript and dated 7 March 1918 shows a groups of nurses and gentlemen in uniform, 22 cm x 17 cm, mounted on cardstock. A medical operation being performed by the doctor in 1910 is captured in 2 sepia photographs, each 11cm x 8 cm and each mounted on embossed paper mount. Foxing to 2 mounts, otherwise the lot in very good condition. Manuscript notes, circa February - March 1913, written by the doctor. Comprises annotated record of treatments instituted by himself and another doctor known only as Schmidt, including a dose of morphine and oxygen, among other things. Naturally monitoring his wife's progress, the document mentions levels of consciousness, blood samples taken, rate of heart beat, condition of lungs, trachea, pupils, etc. The document describes a good day, where the patient has no hypertension (high blood pressure), a normal cough, until 13:30 that evening when she suffered a stroke, with convulsions approximately every 22 minutes leading up to her death, which is also illustrated on the temperature chart. Double leaf, on personal letterhead from the family villa, measuring 12.5 cm x 17 cm. A medical chart, from the Cochin Hospital in Paris, 1913. Doctor Schwartz, husband of the patient, records temperature readings taken from 28 February - 7 March to one side, with continued readings from 18 March - 3 April 1913 recorded to verso. Mrs. Anna Schwartz died quite suddenly of a stroke at the young age of 53. Oblong card, measures 15,5 cm x 10 cm, printed to recto and verso. A large mourning card, printed in April 1913, sent collectively from a long list family members, friends and colleagues, expresses brief but profound sentiments of sympathy and condolence for Dr. Schwartz. Indicative of affluent connections, the condolence card contains several interesting names whom evidently the doctor was acquainted with, many of whom are members of the Légion d'honneur or the Legion of Honor, a prestigious French order established by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802. Comprising 15 original signed engravings, each with a suite, all in all 30 original engravings by the famous French painter and printmaker Bernard Naudin. Bernard Naudin (1876-1946) was the pupil of Léon Bonnat at the Beaux-Arts, Paris. He was successful as a painter, but he gave it up in1904 in order to concentrate on printmaking, for which he is now famous. Scott's plans to attempt the South Pole were well known, and Amundsen was severely criticized for competing with Scott. The two polar journeys were in made in marked contrast, and form part of one of the greatest dramas of exploration - Amundsen made the trip with dogs and skis, reaching the pole a month before Scott's party with little difficulty; Scott and four others reached the pole, but died on the return just short of safety, after an heroic but ill-planned trip, dragging their own sleds..

Pogany&#39;s best known works consist of illustrations of classic myths and legends done in the Art Nouveau style. He also worked as an art director on several Hollywood films, including Fashions of 1934 and Dames.The publication of Pogány&#39;s Lohengrin was the final act in his trilogy of masterworks focused on Wagner&#39;s Germanic tales, and one of the quintet that is considered his finest work. Pogány clearly approached the commission to illustrate Lohengrin as an opportunity to improve and extend techniques that he had developed through his preceding work, particularly The Rubáiyat of Omar Khayyám, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Tannhäuser and Parsifal. the other four books that immortalized his career as an illustrator. That commitment to ongoing innovation resulted in an incredible suite of illustrations, including color lithographs, monotone and marginal illustrations and the delightful tipped-in color plates (produced with a four-color process) included in Lohengrin. In 1913 Einstein investigated curved space and curved time as they relate to a theory of gravity, presenting Entwurf, a theory that had &#147;virtually all the elements of the general theory of relativity with the exception of one striking omission: gravitational field equations that were not generally covariant&#148; (Calaprice, 40). In fact, the Entwurf theory is already &#147;very close to the version of general relativity published in November 1915 and constitutes an enormous advance over Einstein&#146;s first attempt at a generalized theory of relativity and theory of gravitation published in 1912&#148; (The History of Quantum Mechanics and the Theory of Relativity Auction, Christies, 2002, 105). In this paper, Einstein attempts to convey the full content of his Entwurf theory with the clear &#147;intent of [explaining] the mathematical methods and formal structure of the general theory of relativity. A major part of the [paper] was concerned with a mathematical derivation of the field equations of the Entwurf theory from a variational principle&#148; (David Hilbert&#39;s Lectures on the Foundations of Physics 1915-1927, 10). &#147;Drawing on earlier work with Grossmann, Einstein formulated his gravitational field equations using a variation principle. Using this richer mathematical structure, Einstein offered a proof purporting to demonstrate that this theory had the maximum covariance compatible with the hole argument; that is covariance under &#145;justified&#146; transformation between the &#145;adapted coordinate systems&#146; he had introduced with Grossmann&#148; (Calaprice). Black and white text illustrations..Contemporary binding by Birdsall of Northampton (signed in gilt on the front turn-in) of brown goatskin, the covers with a gilt double fillet border, at the center of the front cover the figure of the Sergeant standing on a newspaper composed of onlaid pieces of various coloured goatskin with additional tooling, reproducing the figure as seen on the frontispiece, lettered with the title and author above and below. The spine is divided into five panels with gilt compartments, lettered in the second and fourth, the first and fifth tooled with a sprig, the long third panel with a flower issuing from a vase, the turn-ins and matching inside joints tooled with gilt fillets and rolls, brown moiré silk doublures and endleaves, top edge gilt, the others untrimmed. Original front cover vellum and spine preserved. Housed in a cloth chemise and slipcase. A superb copy.Hugh Thomson&#39;s (1860-1920) "style seems to have emerged fully formed and to have corresponded perfectly with popular taste, and, while he refined his technical skills during his career, he rarely departed from it. A contemporary of the Brock brothers, he shared their feeling for line, detail, and period atmosphere but remained untouched by the aesthetic movement and the work of other contemporaries such as Arthur Rackham or Edmund Dulac. Reflecting successfully the nostalgia of the time, his fine line drawing of rural characters and gentle countrified society appealed to the imagination of the public; most of Thomson&#39;s best-known work is in this idiom. This style sat lightly on the page and reproduced well in smaller formats. Sir James Matthew Barrie (1860&#150;1937) is best known for his wildly successful, internationally renowned play and childrens&#39; classic, Peter Pan (1904). Barrie&#39;s remarkable impact on the London stage in the 1900s began with this, his first play, the sentimental four-act comedy Quality Street (1901). The story is about two sisters who start a school "for genteel children." The play opened at the Knickerbocker Theatre in New York on November 11, 1901, starring the great Maude Adams, but ran for only a modestly successful 64 performances. It then opened at the Vaudeville Theatre in London on September 17,1902 and ran for a very successful 459 performances, making it one of the first American productions to score a bigger triumph in London than in New York. The piece then enjoyed numerous revivals and tours. The play was adapted twice for film; the first, in 1927 starred Marion Davies, and the second, in 1937, starred Katharine Hepburn."Mr. Barrie justifies the simple, natural life; he demonstrates the essential virtuousness of cakes and ale and even of ginger hot in the mouth. Quality Street is a case in point. Its theme, to speak generally, is the joy of living...More particularly the theme is the desire of women to love tenderly and to be honourably loved in return. That desire is never more charmingly exhibited than it is in young spinsters verging on an age when love seems in danger of passing them by. It is the theme of Jane Austen&#39;s Persuasion. If that classic instance comes automatically to the pen it is because Mr. Barrie&#39;s play chooses Jane Austen&#39;s period, and his characters speak the delightfully stilted language of Jane Austen&#39;s people...it is a genuine Barrie, and, being a genuine Barrie, has an irresistible charm. It shows us the sweetness of life as lived by old maids, and by young maids who are honestly determined not to be old maids if they can help it. It makes us, like St. Augustine in his youth, in love with love. It has laid us up in lavender" (Vaudeville, September, 1902).The roots of Birdsall of Northampton "stretch back to the early eighteenth century but it was in 1792 that John Lacy&#39;s Northampton bindery was acquired by William Birdsall, continuing in his family until 1961...In Birdsall&#39;s heyday, Gerring (Notes on Bookbinding, 1899) reported a staff of 250 engaged in making ladies handbags, fancy boxes, and stationary; as well as all types of bookbinding. The firm seemed always ready to experiment and careful records and samples were kept by Richard Birdsall, great-great-nephew of the founder, until he died in 1909...The firm&#39;s collection of over 3,000 finishing tools passed to the University of Toronto" (Maggs, Bookbinding in the British Isles II, #262, and #321). "Birdsall&#39;s is notable for the high quality of their leathers and finishings, as well as for the inventive style of their &#39;inlaid pictorial bindings&#39;" (Chevalier Collection, Christie&#39;s November 9, 1990).
