The English edition published by Beaumont in the same year is much more common than this edition. "In his brief time, Nijinsky was the most famous male dancer in the world, a preeminence due in part to his extraordinary virtuosity... But it was not his virtuosity alone that made him such a powerful stage presence. As contemporary reports make clear, Nijinsky was a great and unusual actor. The ideal Fokine interpreter, he was able to expand a simple choreographic design into a rich dramatic portrait, using, in keeping with Fokine's dicta, the whole body as an expressive instrument... Nijinsky's influence as a dancer was immediate and huge. That ballet, nearly extinguished artistically in western Europe, was revived in this century is due to him and other great dancers of his generation, such as Anna Pavlova and Karsavina, as well as to Diaghilev. That male ballet, utterly extinguished, was also revived is due to him preeminently. Nijinsky was the first real ballet star of the male sex that Europe had seen since the retirement of Auguste Vestris nearly a century earlier. He initiated a renaissance." Cohen: The International Encyclopedia of Dance Vol. 4, pp. 646-648. George Barbier, one of the greatest French illustrators of the early 20th century, was a pioneering force in the world of Art Deco and a prolific designer for numerous theatrical productions, including those of Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. He was particularly taken with Nijinsky and executed the present highly evocative drawings in homage to this unrivaled icon of the Russian Ballet. From the collection of the noted Swiss dancer and choreographer Alain Bernard (1932-2012), with his distinctive bookplate to verso of upper wrapper and with three sheets of [?Bernard's] pencil designs, possibly ideas for ballets, laid in.

Wings and the Child; or The Building of Magic Cities

London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1913., 1913. FIRST EDITION. Extremely scarce in dustwrapper. Publisher's pictorial green cloth with bright gilt titles to faded spine, lightly rubbed, a little spotting to top edge, in its illustrated dustwrapper, with one small chip to spine top. Illustrated with pictures by George Barraud and from photographs. Edith Nesbit (1858 - 1924), English novelist and short story writer, famous for her Ghost stories, Gothic tales, mysteries, and above all, her classic children's books, who was credited with having invented the children's adventure story. A mischievous, tomboyish child who grew up to be an unconventional adult, E Nesbit (she always used the plain initial to hide her gender) wrote for children after years of successful writing for adult magazines. She was asked to write about her childhood but instead of facts chose to describe her happy girlhood in fiction. Her first great success was The Story of the Treasure-Seekers (1899), followed by Five Children and It (1902), The New Treasure Seekers (1904), The Phoenix and The Carpet (1904), The Story of the Amulet (1906) The Enchanted Castle (1907), The House of Arden (1908) and The Magic City (1910). Her most celebrated story remains The Railway Children (1906), and many of her works have been successfully filmed, and many of her stories have been bestsellers for decades and continue to be enjoyed today.

Autograph letter, signed ("Charles M. Doughty"), to Mr. R. Palmer of Kirby Lonsdale, Westmorland, regarding Nigeria, retirement, happiness, Isaac Walton, and family matters

Eastbourne, 10 august 1913. 12mo. 3 pp. on folded sheet, headed Lavrock, Grange Road, Eastbourne. Minor soiling along the fold. Opened envelope (addressed in Doughty's hand) tipped to blank verso. Fine . Excellent and wide-ranging, reminiscent letter from the great Arabian explorer and author Charles M. Doughty, mentioning that he began to read the translations by his correspondent's son, discussing Nigeria and mentioning a Capt. Gordon, "going this week to Northern Nigeria as a Kaimakam." Doughty discusses Palmer's "superannuation from a responsible office, to be able look back upon many years of good work ... and one would become gradually reconciled to a change of habit & new & complete leisure. And I can imagine you with your cheerful disposition & quiet humane tastes to be able, as Isaac Walton, to be happy every day & everywhere." Doughty concludes with news of his family and fond recollections of their visit to Kirby, "Believe me, sincerely yours, Charles M. Doughty."

Fine collection of letters and other documents relating to the life and work of the founder of the Trieste stock exchange and the Austrian Lloyd. Contains letters from and to Heinrich Friedjung, Friedrich Baron Bruck and Ignaz Baron Plener.

Various places, c. 1860-1913 [?]. - Various sizes. 173½ pp. on 107 ff. (correspondence) and 31½ pp. on 24 ff. (other documents). Karl von Bruck was Austrian minister of commerce, reformed the postal and consular systems, instigated the development of Austrian trade law and created the Trieste marine agency and stock exchange. He did not live to materialize his plans for a central European commercial union which was to bring the customs, currency and tax systems of the German states and Austria into agreement. Wrongly accused of having personally enriched himself in his office, he was dismissed as minister of finance by the Emperor and took his own life.
