"Potash and Perlmutter": Original drawing of the characters in this play, ink on board, signed lower right

n.p, ca. 1913. 14 x 10-1/4 inches. . Fine condition. Bryant and Heneage, pp. 110-11 . In 1910 Montague Glass published Potash and Perlmutter, a collection of stories written in vernacular and dealing with two partners in the cloak-and-suit business. They were immensely popular, and led to a number of sequels and dramatizations, among them the one celebrated here in Raven Hill's lively and expressive drawing Leonard Raven Hill (1867-1942) was born in Bath and studied at the Lambeth School of Art, and in Paris with Bouguereau(1885-87). On his return he became a prolific contributor to various British publications. "Altogether", note Bryant and Heneage, "he was one of the most celebrated black and white artists of the period". In 1896 he joined Punch, an association which lasted 40 years, and ended only when his eyesight began to fail in 1935. "In his prime he was a fine strong draughtsman, good at portraying character and making the most of a wide range of jokes." This drawing shows Potash, and Perlmutter, surrounded by other characters in the play; it probably appeared in Punch around 1913 A SPLENDID THEATRICAL DRAWING BY A NOTABLE ARTIST

Patterns of Linoleums (Linoleum Catalogue / Pattern Book) - G Quality. 1914-1915

London: C. S. & Co. , St. Paul's.. Good+ with no dust jacket. 1913/15. Unknown. Hardcover. A Wonderful Period Pattern book that would likely have hung in a showroom - Russian Green cloth boards with (dulled) gilt titling to the front cover only. Covered holes in the top end with cord 'handles' for hanging à là modern day Carpet Samples. 40 cm x 23 cm x 3 cm. The covers are a little marked/stained and the rear board has been badly damp at some point in the past leaving the rear board virtually cracked across, with damage to the paper endpaper inside the cover, but the board is still intact and not otherwise affecting the contents. Internally a small light sheet of paper has been tipped in at the front giving details of the 'Body cloth', the 'Narrow widths' and notes that "Carriage Paid from the Factory to any Station in Great Britain and to Ports in Ireland........etc," and dated Sept 1913. A full INDEX follows showing the Number, Code (name) Unbordered, Bordered. Then circa 120 FULL COLOUR patterns of Linoleum - all in near perfect condition in stunning gloss colour. AMAZING Designs, many of which wouldn't be out of place as wallpaper/rugs or other textiles! A William Morris style to some? . Both 'Art Nouveau' and 'Art Deco' featured. There is at the end a small 'stub' on the spine end - which might have been an actual lino sample - or just a stiff back sheet? - but it has obviously perished/gone over time.         Old Chinatown . . with Text by Will Irwin

New York: Mitchell Kennerley, 1913 - An important work of documentary and ethnographic photography, " . one of the first and most important examples of the candid-camera approach to documentary photography" (Parr/Badger I). INSCRIBED to Edward Epstean, "whose knowledge and patience are responsible for the excellent reproductions of my Chinatown pictures" and SIGNED ("Arnold Genthe, December 1912"). Epstean (1868-1945) was a pioneering photo-engraver and collector who assembled one of the greatest libraries on the history and science of photography. Though not formally credited in this book, it must be assumed by Genthe's inscription that Epstean was responsible for the book's stunning half-tone reproductions - so rich in tone and detail that they approach the quality of photogravures Second edition, enlarged. 8vo. Illustrated with 91 photographs by Arnold Genthe, printed at the Plimpton Press; ix, [1], 208, [2] pp. Original gilt- stamped black cloth, fraying to cloth at extremities, nick to spine; very good. cf.         OLD CHINATOWN Inscribed to the only person born in the White House

Mitchell Kennerley, New York 1913 - Enlarged from the First Edition of 1908 with 91 higher quality gravure plates of this important work of documentary and ethnographic photography. Black cloth decorated in gilt and red. Text by Will Irwin. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper to Esther Cleveland, one of Grover Cleveland's five children and the only child to date to be born in the White House: "For/Miss Esther Cleveland/--So that she may know/what the real Chinatown/looked like, when she/sees the new one-- /with best wishes from/Arnold Genthe/New York/February 1915." Miss Cleveland would have been 21 or 22 at the time of this inscription. She would in a few years depart for England where she did volunteer work during World War I and where she met and married her husband, settling there until 1971 when she returned to the United States and remained there until her death in 1980. Esther's 49-year old father married her 21-year old mother in the White House in 1886, making Frances the youngest first lady in U. S. history. Esther was born in the White House during Cleveland's second term after the out-of-office politican was elected in an event unprecedented in U. S. political history.         Antarctic Days

London: Andrew Melrose, , 1913. Sketches of the Homely Side of Polar Life by Two of Shackleton's Men. Illustrated by the Authors, and introduced by Sir Ernest Shackleton. Quarto. Original light blue cloth with mounted illustration ("A Small Typical Antarctic Snowberg") to the front cover, bevelled boards, top edge gilt, others uncut. Tipped-in coloured frontispiece with captioned tissue-guard and 3 other similar plates, 18 halftone plates mainly from photographs, full-page line-drawn illustrations to the text. Spine tanned, and cloth a little spotted, as often, light toning and occasional pale foxing, but a very good copy. Deluxe edition, this copy number 77 of 280, signed on the half-title by Shackleton, Murray and Marston. "Murray and Marston's Antarctic Days is a fine complement to the two giants of Antarctic bibliography emanating from Shackleton's 1907-9 expedition, Aurora Australis and Heart of the Antarctic, and it is one of the most sought-after Antarctic titles... very scarce" (Rosove). In his introduction Shackleton describes it as "an unofficial, and therefore more human document", and advises "anyone who wants to get to the kernel of the life of the Polar explorer" to read the book, Conrad further suggesting that it gives "the flavour of life with the Boss". Howgego describes both the deluxe and trade editions as "very scarce", but it is remarkable that COPAC locates just one copy of the former, whilst OCLC has just three, all of them in Australia.

        Hans Andersen's Fairy Tales

1913. The Coloured Plates for the Book are Among the Best that Heath Robinson Ever Made" (Beare)Edition DeLuxe, One of One Hundred Copies Signed by W. Heath Robinson[ROBINSON, W. Heath, illustrator]. ANDERSEN, Hans [Christian]. Hans Andersen's Fairy Tales. With Illustrations by W. Heath Robinson. London: Constable & Co., 1913. Edition DeLuxe. 1/100 copies signed by W. Heath Robinson (this copy being #29). Quarto 11 7/16 x 9 inches; 290 x 239 mm.). xii, 288, [2] pp. Pictorial title-page, sixteen mounted color plates, each with a titled tissue-guard, thirty-seven full-page and fifty-eight smaller black and white drawings. Publishers full white vellum over boards. Front cover and spine pictorially stamped in gilt, top edge gilt, others uncut. A spectacular copy of this very rare book. Housed in a leather edged marbled board slipcase."Following the publication of Bill the Minder, Constable asked Heath Robinson to illustrate a new edition of Hans Andersen's Fairy Tales, to be published in a similar format. It was the third time that Heath Robinson had illustrated Hans Andersen's Fairy Tales and he said that this time he attempted to bring out the happier aspects of the stories. The coloured plates for the book are among the best that Heath Robinson ever made. In them he achieved that combination of the familiar and the fantastic that appeals so much to children. This is particularly true of the illustrations in which the tiny, magical figure of Tommelise is seen riding on the back of a swallow or talking to mice that are drawn with great realism… The book is one rare occasion on which Heath Robinson's coloured plates are more successful than his line drawings. The latter show signs of haste, especially when on e sees the originals, and are in general much less finely drwan than those for 'Bill the Minder'. Constable were short of capital, and only had 100 copies of the large paper edition printed, with the result that although at Christmas 1913 copies of the limited edition of Bill the Minder were still available, that of Hans Andersen's Fairy Tales had already sold out."         THE PASSIONATE FRIENDS: A NOVEL Presentation to G. B. Shaw

London: MacMillan, 1913 The [GB] Shaw Copy. First edition, first issue with all the correct points. A fine copy in the publisher's patterned sage green cloth, stamped in gilt and blind. [very minor offsetting to the endpapers & a small stain at the outside bottom of the front pastedown - still a remarkable fresh copy & an extraordinary example, Inscribed by Wells with a flourish for Charlotte Shaw & George Bernard Shaw through her with good humored advice as follows: "Mrs. Shaw / with warm regards / HGW / and do make GBS try a novel" - The inscription in rebuttal to Shaw having earlier admonished Wells to try writing a play. Green calf clamshell protective presentation case, gilt decorated & lettered at the spine. THE PASSIONATE FRIENDS was produced as a movie by Stoll in 1923, again by David Lean in 1948 (script by Eric Ambler), & again by Paramount in 1952. Wells Soc. 51; Hammond A9. "Bernard Shaw and H. G. Wells were both dedicated to reshaping the world: as Shaw commented in one letter to Wells, " The first volume of [Karl Marx's] Capital (all I ever read of it) changed the mind of Europe; a thing we two have been trying to do all our lives." 1 Although (apart from some satiric fantasies) Back to Methuselah is Shaw's only direct attempt to picture what this change might mean, H. G. Wells was very much in the futures business with almost a third of his voluminous writings being explorations from the present into visionary alternatives. Titles like The World Set Free or Men Like Gods offer much the same ecstatic hope for change as Shaw's "metabiological Pentateuch"; and a comparison between the ways in which each envisaged the future is illuminating. It encapsulates the extremes of the turn-of-the century revolutionary movement in which they were both involved, as well as throwing the nature of Shaw's beliefs into high relief by the contrast. The links between the two writers, both of whom aspired to be the intellectual leader of the new century, are well known: their common membership in the Fabian Society, and the Wells forced resignation after publicizing the scandal of his affair with Amber Reeves (at that time the secretary of the Society) in his novel Ann Veronica, their extensive correspondence from at least 1901 right up to just three days before Wells' death in 1946, which shows that each read the other's work, even sending drafts of some pieces to one another. What has not been as fully realized is the degree to which both Wells' novels and Shaw's plays were written as direct responses to each other's work. There are enough overlaps or cross-references to qualify several of their works as a serious literary conversation, and significantly, the subject of their artistic argument was specifically their idea of the perfect society, and the means through which it might be." - Innes, C. D. "Utopian Apocalypses: Shaw, War, and H. G. Wells" SHAW The Annual of Bernard Shaw Studies - Volume 23, 2003, pp. 37-46, Penn State University Press. Signed by Author. 1st Edition.

Borderel », étui bordé percaline rouge. EDITION ORIGINALE. Provenance : J. Borderel. FINE COPY. PICTURES AND MORE DETAILS ON REQUEST. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
