      Np: Privately printed, 1913. Only Edition. Photographs. Very good. A Collection of Seventeen (17) Original Photographs From Theodore Roosevelt's Review of The Argentinean Troops at Campo de Mayo on October 12, 1913. Each photograph is approx. 3.5" x 5.5" (postcard size) and is annotated on the verso by a member of TR's group. We are confident that these photographs have never been published. We are unable to say who wrote the descriptions. Traveling with the Ex-President was Frank Harper, TR's Secretary. He soon would be taken ill and have to leave the expedition. I do not believe that the writing is in Harper's hand as TR is referred to often as "Ted". That seems a bit too familiar for their relationship. Nor are the annotations in son Kermit's or wife Edith's hand either. They would also not have referred to him as "Ted". Here is a list of the images by number with the annotations quoted; 1. Following Theodore Roosevelt's unsuccessful Bull Moose Party run for the Presidency in 1912, the former President wrote his Autobiography and then embarked on his last great adventure in Wilderness. He and son, Kermit, joined a group of Brazilian soldiers commanded by Colonel Candido Rondon, scientists from the American Museum of Natural History, Brazilian naturalists, and common laborers in an expedition to explore the Rio da Duvida, the River of Doubt. A tributary of the Amazon, it flows through a rain forest wilderness where the only residents in 1913 were native Brazilian indians, not particularly friendly to their rival tribes or the Brazilians in general. This trip nearly cost TR his life. It certainly contributed to his early death just five years following, but it provided him as he said, "My last chance to be a boy"! The Rondon-Roosevelt Expedition of 1913-1914 answered the questions about this river, later renamed the Rio Teodoro. This adventure has been wonderfully chronicled by Candace Millard in River of Doubt, Joseph Ornig in My Last Chance To Be A Boy and of course, Theodore Roosevelt in Through The Brazilian Wilderness. Prior to their departure onto the River, before the real business of exploration began, TR was feted wherever he traveled through South America. He visited Buenos Aires, on October 12th, he spoke before an enthusiastic crowd of over 6000 guests at a dinner that evening. Earlier that day, he reviewed the Argentinean Troops at Campo de Mayo just outside the city. Joseph Ornig describes the moment; "The high point of Roosevelt's stay in Buenos Aires came on October 12, when he attended military maneuvers at Campo De Mayo, the big Argentine army training camp outside the capital. Drenching rains and high winds did nothing to lessen T.R.s enthusiasm. Surrounded by a hundred staff officers he was reported to be "as cheery as ever", taking the salute from infantry regiments that marched by singing patriotic songs. The bad weather did not prevent several primitive biplanes from circling overhead, one daring pilot buzzed the reviewing stand, causing everyone - including Roosevelt - to duck. Afterward T.R. stood in the rain and chatted with those soldiers who spoke English, complimenting them on their spirit. At the officers club he presented his hosts with a bust of the American Civil War Gen. Philip Sheridan, a gift of the United States Army officer corps. The sculpture was by a then little-known artist named Gutzon Borglum who 30 years later would carve Roosevelt's face in gigantic scale on a mountainside in South Dakota

Seide u. enthält Lampen zum Preis von 4 bis 1683 Mark. - Inhaber der Firma war H. Pickenbach. Preisliste u. letztes Blatt (Inhalt) gebräunt, 2 Blatt der Preisliste lose. Sonst sehr gut erhalten.

The gilt image on the front cover is of the Neue Synagogue that stood on Oranienburger Strasse, Berlin. The Neue Synagoge ("New Synagogue") was built 1859 -1866 as the main synagogue of the Berlin Jewish community, on Oranienburger Straße. Because of its splendid eastern Moorish style and resemblance to the Alhambra, it is an important architectural monument of the second half of the 19th century in Berlin. The building was designed by Eduard Knoblauch. Following Knoblauch's death in 1865, Friedrich August Stüler took responsibility for the majority of its construction as well as for its interior arrangement and design. It was inaugurated in the presence of Count Otto von Bismarck, then Minister President of Prussia, in 1866. One of the few synagogues to survive Kristallnacht, it was badly damaged prior to and during World War II and subsequently much was demolished; the present building on the site is a reconstruction of the ruined street frontage with its entrance, dome and towers, and only a few rooms behind.       Paris: Mabileau & Co 1913 - Hand-coloured pochoir print. Dimensions: 895 mm x 450 mm. (35.25 by 17.75 inches). The Gamy-Montaut prints document various historical events in the early history of transportation, including Power Boat Racing, Motorcycle and Motor Car Racing, Motor Car Touring, Zeppelins and Tennis. Having observed the rapidly growing interest in cars and racing during the early years of motor cars, Ernest Montaut produced his first motoring prints in the mid-1890s, and by 1897, his drawings were pictorial records of the many races in France. Montaut's work was extremely well received in the Paris of his day and was shown in the fashionable shops of the Rue de l'Opera and Rue de la Paix, as well as in the better galleries. Marguerite Montaut, Ernest's wife, joined him in his work producing not only racing prints but also developing a fine series of aviation prints commemorating such events as the first flights on the early European mail routes. While Marguerite Montaut's works were occasionally signed "M. Montaut", she also used the name "Gamy", an anagram for Magy. The Gamy-Montaut prints were all produced by the pochoir process in which the outlines for each image were drawn onto lithographic stones and printed. Using these uncoloured prints as a template, elaborate stencils were cut for each colour. Water-colour was then brushed onto the image through the stencil. The colouring process was quite complex, with each print taking several days to produce. It was also quite labour intensive, and the studio of Gamy-Montaut therefore employed a group of trained artists, including Nevil and Campion, to assist in the colouring. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Spine lightly sunned, with fraying to the ends. Gilt lettering strong, except for at publisher's imprint at base of spine. Boards show light scuffing and wear. Fraying to corners. A nice copy overall, presents well. Marks the first appearance of Freud's greatest work in English, translated from the third German edition.

He also provided the illustrations to later editions of books by Charles Dickens, including David Copperfield (1911), The Pickwick Papers (1910) and The Old Curiosity Shop (1913), during the golden age of lavishly produced gift book. A fellow cartoonist, Cyril Bird, once described Reynolds as "a latter-day" John Leech. Reynolds contributed to several journals including The London Magazine, The Sketch and the The Windsor Magazine. In later years Reynolds concentrated on book illustration, including The Golf Book (1932), Off to the Pictures (1937) and Hamish McDuff (1937). Gimbel B100.

      - FIRST EDITION OF J. J. THOMSON'S 'PLUM PUDDING MODEL': "THE MOST WIDELY ACCEPTED THEORY OF ATOMIC STRUCTURE UP TO ABOUT 1913" (Peacock, The Quantum Revolution, 34). In the search for an atomic model, a number of physicists "proposed atomic models with a central positive core and electrons either orbiting around it like planets around the sun or like the rings of Saturn. But none of these models could explain either the stability of the atom or the observed rules of the spectral lines" (ibid). The physicist J. J. Thomson "imagined that the electrons were embedded like plums throughout a pudding of uniform positive charge, with the number of electrons equal to the atomic number of the atom, so that the overall charge would add up to zero. At this point there was no clear evidence that positive charge comes in discrete corpuscles. Thomson imagined the electrons to be swarming around in shells or rings in such a way that their electrostatic repulsions balanced, and he was encouraged by the fact that with some mathematical fudging he could get the structure of the shells to suggest the layout of the periodic table of the elements. The model was quite unable to predict the frequencies of observed spectral lines. But Thomson's model did at least give some account of the stability of the atom, and in the period of about 1904-1909, with still no direct evidence for the existence of a central positive core, the Thomson model seemed like the best bet" (ibid). The Insignia of the Third Class of the Order of the Brilliant Star as conferred upon the British diplomat Edward William Paget Thurstan (1880-1947). The Star was bestowed in the early days of the long reign of Khalifa bin Harub Al-Said of Zanzibar, who ruled from December 1911 to October 1960. The Arabic dynasty of the Al-Saids ruled Zanzibar until the revolution of 1964. Khalifa bin Harub (r. 1911-60), ninth Sultan of Zanzibar, was descended from Said ibn Sultan (1790-1856), the last of the dynasty whose empire included not only Muscat and Oman, but also Zanzibar, where he had established his capital in 1840. Upon Said's death his realm had been divided: his third son, Thuwaini, succeeded him as Sultan of Muscat and Oman; and his sixth son, Majid, became Sultan of the wealthier Zanzibar. Deep shades of blue and a special deep pink-rust predominate throughout...The Outlook, which printed, in black and white, plate 22... commented: ‘…for the book thinking people will say with grace…sometimes Dulac’s pictures are deep-coloured and intense, sometimes dim and ghost-like. But one and all are sensitized to record impressions of unearthly beauty or horror. Only Poe could have written the poems. Only Dulac could have illustrated them.’…Not to be overlooked here are the sophisticated ink drawings Dulac made for headpieces. Twenty-Seven 'Cold-painted" Bronze Figures of Beatrix Potter Characters From the Doris Frohnsdorff Collection. Vienna: c. 1913 - early 1930s. Nineteen small and eight miniature cold painted Beatrix Potter figurines, the largest 4 mm, the smallest 1.5 mm. Housed in a 11 3/4 x 14 7/8 inch wood display box with glass cover, the figures resting in niches within a foam matrix. Minor loss of paint to a handful of figures, still a very fine collection.Figures include Peter Rabbit, Flopsy Bunny, Goody Tiptoes, Benjamin Bunny, Little Pig Robinson, Johhny Town-Mouse, Mrs. Tittlemouse, Mr. Tod, Pigling Bland, Squirrel Nutkin, Tom Kitten, Hunca - Munca Sweeping, Mr Tod, and Mr.Jeremy Fisher, etc.The Beatrix Potter bronze figurines present a challenge to collectors seeking authentic examples. Ever rigorously careful, we consulted Greta Schuster, renowned Potter collector and widow of Thomas Schuster, bibliographer of Kate Greenaway, who replied, "The Vienna Bronzes are a minefield, from what I can see in your pictures you have a very good selection of old ones (with whiskers), approx. 1913 - 1933... What you have to look out for are ones that were made yesterday and made to look worn and old; yes there are fake Vienna Bronzes." There can be no doubt about the authenticity of the collection under notice: bronze notwithstanding its provenance is sterling: from the celebrated Doris Frohnsdorff collection of Beatrix Potter, offered at Christie's April 16, 1997, lots 223-226.It remains unknown whether these were authorized by Potter. We know that Beatrix authorized ceramics by Grimwade's that were manufactured in 1922 but there are no references to these (or any other) Viennese bronzes in any Potter reference book. They are not to be confused with the later Viennese bronzes by Bermann. We can confidently assert, however, that they possess the same degree of craftsmanship that Bermann describes on its website:"The material of the object is brass. Achieving such a high level of detail requires a very complex and time intensive production process: At the beginning moulds of wax were created, including drains for air and melted brass. All that was covered with clay. The mould was dried and fired. At the same time the wax melted and created a hollow space which was later filled with molten bronze. After casting and cooling the ceramic mould was destroyed and the brass core removed. The drains were then taken off and the whole surface was engraved by hammer and punch followed by the very costly and detailed painting." Ms. Frohnsdorff, in a note to us, asserted that these Potter Viennese painted bronzes were made in three sizes, the miniature figurines, at 5/8 inches and smaller, are the rarest. To have eight genuine examples in one lot is more than remarkable, it's a phenomenon."A collector's dream" (Justin G. Six Guns 1154 says "Rare." "A full history of those unparalleled killers, related by their defense lawyer, who must have known the facts. There are several typographical errors, as well as some misspellings." The Benders used their home as a stopping off place for travelers and then killing their victims in some manner and taking their property, including horses, saddles, wagons, money, etc. They were under suspicion regarding their activities, until finally they tried to escape and eventually were caught and returned for their trial. A rare item, handsomely bound.

A presentation copy, inscribed: "With best wishes and sincere regards of the author, John R. Lynch, August 14, 1914," on the front free endpaper ---- Born a Louisiana slave, John Roy Lynch (1847-1939) became involved in state politics after the Civil War. The first African American from Mississippi elected to Congress in 1873, he advocated forcefully for the Civil Rights Bill of 1875. He delivered the keynote address at the 1884 Republican National Convention, the first black so honored. The three-term congressman published "The Facts of Reconstruction" in order "to present the other side," namely to refute the racist Dunning-school carpetbag and scalawag assessment of Reconstruction. The work remains the most extensive account of the post-Civil War years written by an African American participant.         The Works of Francis Thompson

      London: Burns and Oates no date, but, 1913. Three volumes, octavo, each volume with frontispiece, titles in red and black, top edges gilt; very good condition, bound in Riviere tree calf, edges in gilt, spine with raised bands, decorated ornately in gilt, red and green morocco labels, ornate dentelles with marbled endpapers, some scattered foxing. Francis Thompson (1859-1907) the celebrated 19th. century English poet spent his life battling with ill health and poverty. The first volume includes a Note by Francis Thompson's Literary Executor signed W.M., presumably Wilfred Meynell, best known as the editor of Merrie England, the poetry magazine. Wilfred and Alice Meynell are credited to have found Thompson when he was living on the street, addicted to opium. They provided him with housing and helped him publish his poetry, recognising his talent. The set has three frontispieces, all portraits of Thompson. The first volume, a photographic etching of Thompson at age nineteen, the second volume includes an engraving from a drawing by Neville Lytton artist and the 3rd Earl of Lytton; the final a later portrait of Thompson from a sketch by Everard Meynell who wrote The Life of Francis Thompson (1913) also published by Burns & Oats. First edition, sixth thousand, in a beautiful Riviere binding.

The translations are individually published in the United Kingdom as "A Death In The Family", "A Man In Love", and "Boyhood Island", and also as part of the British "My Struggle" six-volume cycle. It&#39;s the other way around in the United States, where "My Struggle" takes precedence over the individual volumes. Published in regular first print runs that sold out immediately after publication. The production values of the British Editions are superb and exemplary. The First Editions are now rare. Presents Karl Ove Knausgaard&#39;s "Min Kamp" Volumes One, Two, and Three in felicitous English translations.       FIRST EDITION OF J. J. THOMSON&#39;S &#39;PLUM PUDDING MODEL&#39;: "THE MOST WIDELY ACCEPTED THEORY OF ATOMIC STRUCTURE UP TO ABOUT 1913" (Peacock, The Quantum Revolution, 34). In the search for an atomic model, a number of physicists "proposed atomic models with a central positive core and electrons either orbiting around it like planets around the sun or like the rings of Saturn. But none of these models could explain either the stability of the atom or the observed rules of the spectral lines" (ibid). The physicist J. J. Thomson "imagined that the electrons were embedded like plums throughout a pudding of uniform positive charge, with the number of electrons equal to the atomic number of the atom, so that the overall charge would add up to zero. At this point there was no clear evidence that positive charge comes in discrete corpuscles. Thomson imagined the electrons to be swarming around in shells or rings in such a way that their electrostatic repulsions balanced, and he was encouraged by the fact that with some mathematical fudging he could get the structure of the shells to suggest the layout of the periodic table of the elements. The model was quite unable to predict the frequencies of observed spectral lines... But Thomson&#39;s model did at least give some account of the stability of the atom, and in the period of about 1904-1909, with still no direct evidence for the existence of a central positive core, the Thomson model seemed like the best bet" (ibid). Stiff printed brown wraps (6-1/2" x 9-5/8"). Issued in an edition of 500 copies. Though there is no indication of such in the book itself, this volume was in the possession of Louis Bryant, Reed&#39;s wife. Laid in is an interesting piece: a 6" x 7-1/4" reproduction of an unidentified figure on which is written on the verso in an unidentified hand: "In the world is a big place which is called Russia, and there is a little place, my heart, which is full of gratefulness and love for a little American doll Louise Bryant. And when Louise thinks of Russia I beg her to think of me ever yours." Following that is a name, partly obliterated, dated Moscow, April 1921. Perhaps the best known left-wing American journalist of the twentieth century; Reed was portrayed by Warren Beatty in the film REDS, nominated for twelve Academy Awards and winner of three, which centered on Reed&#39;s life, notably his romance with Louise Bryant, played by Diane Keaton, and his early death at 33 in Moscow. Reed&#39;s best known book, TEN DAYS THAT SHOOK THE WORLD, is Reed&#39;s firsthand account of the October Revolution in Russia in 1917.
