Prima edizione.         THE ABYSMAL BRUTE

1913 - New York: The Century Company, 1913. 1 page undated ads. Original light green cloth decorated in dark green and black, with dust jacket. First Edition of London's prizefighting tale about "a white backwoods giant who would rather read Browning than slug his opponents" [Sinclair], prompted by his coverage of the Johnson-Jeffries fight in Reno. The very title of this book indicates London's preoccupation with the concept of the "brute" which underlies the social behavior of men and animals alike. London had recently left Macmillan in a dispute over royalties, but would find Century to be much less patient or understanding; he ultimately had to beg his former publisher to take him back. THE ABYSMAL BRUTE includes a frontispiece by Gordon Grant.~This copy is in the second binding state, which is identical to the first except for color, and is in fine condition. The three-color pictorial dust jacket shows a man carrying a rifle with a buck slung over his shoulder; this jacket is near-fine, with a couple of small chips at the top corners of the spine (not affecting print). Sisson & Martens p. 70; Blanck 11945. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1913. - A Finely Bound Set of J. M. Barrie - the Creator of Peter PanBARRIE, J.M. The Kirriemuir Edition of the Works of J.M. Barrie. London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1913. Limited to One Thousand Sets, numbered and signed by the publishers. Ten large octavo volumes (9 3/16 x 6 3/8 inches: 234 x 160 mm.). Late twentieth century three-quarter tan morocco over marbled boards ruled in blind. Spines with five raised bands decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt, top edge gilt. A fine set.Kirriemuir in Angus, Scotland is the birthplace of Peter Pan's creator, JM Barrie. Barrie was a local handloom-weaver's son, born in a little whitewashed cottage at 9 Brechin Road, which is looked after by the National Trust for Scotland, and displays his writing desk, photos and newspaper clippings. The wash-house outside - romantically billed as Barrie's first "theatre" - was apparently the model for the house built by the Lost Boys for Wendy in Never-Never Land."Sir James Matthew Barrie, 1st Baronet, OM (9 May 1860 – 19 June 1937), more commonly known as J. M. Barrie, was a Scottish novelist and dramatist. He is best remembered for creating Peter Pan, the boy who refused to grow up, whom he based on his friends, the Llewelyn Davies boys. He is also credited with popularizing the name "Wendy," which was uncommon (especially for girls) in both Britain and America before he gave it to the heroine of Peter Pan. He was made a baronet in 1913; his baronetcy was not inherited. He was made a member of the Order of Merit in 1922" (Wikipedia. Fully and solidly referenced).

The TIK - TOK MAN Of OZ. Cort Theatre. Limited Engagement, Beginning Monday Night, April 21, 1913

San Francisco:: Allied Printing,. [1913].. 14-1/2" x 5-3/4". 1st printing. Single sheet broadside.. Modest edgewear & age-toning to paper. Prior owner pencil note in. upper left corner: "Family Party / Edgar [?] / May 3rd 1913". A VG. copy.. A extremely rare survivor of Baum's second theatrical effort, The TIK-TOK MAN Of OZ, the libretto of which is "derived from Baum's 1907 Oz book, Ozma of Oz, with additional characters from The Road to Oz (1909) and a major scene adapted from Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz (1908)." ... "The show was a hit on the West Coast ..." opening March 31, 1914, at LA's Majestic Theatre. The show toured through the West & Midwest through early 1914, though never making Broadway, primarily due to Morosco's withdrawal of support. [Beinvenue. COLLECTORS GUIDE To BAUM & OZ, pp 55 - 57]. We find no record of any other surviving posters from this San Francisco production, and a survey of auction records & other on-line sources indicate just one other TIK-TOK MAN Of OZ performance playbill survives... that from Dec 2, at the Babcock Theatre in Billings MT, which came from the Fred M. Meyer collection of L. Frank Baum, an image of which can be seen on the International Wizard of OZ Club website. . See p. 57, of Beinvenue's book on Baum, for a photographic image of the San Francisco cast.

        Ferdinando Bertelli's Trachtenbuch

Ullmann, Zwickau 1913 - 60 S. ; 8°, Pappband, Neudr. d. Ausg. Venedig 1563, Zwickauer Facsimiledrucke ; Nr. 17.

        A Boy's Will

David Nutt, London 1913 - FIRST EDITION, in the extremely rare first-issue binding ("binding A"), of Robert Frost's first book of poetry. "By 1911 Frost was fighting against discouragement. Poetry had always been considered a young person's game, but Frost, who was nearly 40 years old, had not published a single book of poems and had seen just a handful appear in magazines. In 1911 ownership of the Derry farm passed to Frost. A momentous decision was made: to sell the farm and use the proceeds to make a radical new start in London, where publishers were perceived to be more receptive to new talent. Accordingly, in August 1912 the Frost family sailed across the Atlantic to England. Frost carried with him sheaves of verses he had written but not gotten into print. English publishers in London did indeed prove more receptive to innovative verse, and, through his own vigorous efforts and those of the expatriate American poet Ezra Pound, Frost within a year had published A Boy's Will (1913). From this first book, such poems as 'Storm Fear,' 'Mowing,' and 'The Tuft of Flowers' have remained standard anthology pieces" (Britannica). London: David Nutt, 1913. Octavo, original bronzed brown cloth with upper cover title in gilt. A little fading to spine, otherwise fine. RARE. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Original copperplates for In Powder and Crinoline; the illustration entitled "Princess Diaphanie walking in the Garden".

[London: Hodder & Stoughton,] [1913] - Four engraved copperplates, each measuring approximately 183 × 134 mm, mounted in a row, together with a full-colour pull of the image, framed and glazed. Traces of green patina where copper has slightly oxidised, but fine condition. Original copperplates made for the four-colour separation process used to produce the final image published opposite p. 20, the first illustration in the book (excluding the frontispiece). This remarkable survival shows Nielsen's painstaking artistic technique in building up the four-colour process (Rackham used a three-colour process) to produce the rich and complex illustrations for his deluxe books.
