A DEATH IN THE FAMILY, A MAN IN LOVE, BOYHOOD ISLAND: MY STRUGGLE: BOOKS ONE, TWO, AND THREE

London, England: Harvill Secker, 2012. First Edition. First Printing.. Hardcover. As New/As New Dust Jacket.. London, England: Harvill Secker, 2012. Hardcover. As New/As New. First Edition/First Printing. 1200 pages. Rare Karl Ove Knausgaard collectible set. The first, second, and third volumes of the author's "My Struggle" six-volume novel. The translations are individually published in the United Kingdom as "A Death In The Family", "A Man In Love", and "Boyhood Island", and also as part of the British "My Struggle" six-volume cycle. It's the other way around in the United States, where "My Struggle" takes precedence over the individual volumes. Published in regular first print runs that sold out immediately after publication. The production values of the British Editions are superb and exemplary. The First Editions are now rare. Presents Karl Ove Knausgaard's "Min Kamp" Volumes One, Two, and Three in felicitous English translations. "With an uncanny eye for detail, Knausgaard breaks down his own life story to its elementary particles, reliving memories, reopening wounds, and examining with candor the turbulence and the epiphanies that emerge from his own experience of fatherhood, the fallout in the wake of his father's death, and his visceral connection to music, art, and literature. This Proustian masterpiece opens a window into one of the most original minds writing today" (Publisher's blurb). What is the significance of, and why all the fuss behind, Karl Ove Knausgaard's "My Struggle"? It is the most full-fledged break from - and probably signals the end of - the mannerism, academicism, post-modernism, and all other pretentious and tired isms of our time. It announces the arrival of a major original voice in literature, writing without the crutch called "concept", in deceptively simple yet eloquent prose. It marks the rejection of our obsession with "celebrity lives", by focussing on the tiniest details of one man's ordinary life as well as deeply painful struggle. In sum, it represents, flaws and all, nothing less than the beginning of a new way of writing and possibly, a new era in literature. Time will tell if "My Struggle" is our century's response to Proust's "In Search of Lost Time" (1913-1927), as its most ardent admirers (and its publisher) assert that it is. An absolute "must-have" set for Karl Ove Knausgaard collectors. These copies of "A Death in The Family", A Man In Love", and "Boyhood Island" are very boldly, beautifully, and uniformly signed, placed, and dated in black pen-marker on the title page by the author: "London 23/5/14 Karl Ove Knausgaard". These are the first three volumes of a great novel cycle. As far as we know, this is one of only two such signed sets of the First British Edition/First Printing still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, pristine beauties. All three books are now very scarce as First Editions, "A Man In Love" especially so. Considering their rarity, this is a reasonably priced set. A rare signed set thus. One of the greatest living novelists. A fine collectible set. (SEE ALSO OTHER KARL OVE KNAUSGAARD "MY STRUGGLE" TITLES IN OUR CATALOG). ISBN 1846554675.

On the Structure of the Atom: an Investigation of the Stability and Periods of Oscillation of a number of Corpuscles arranged at equal intervals around the Circumference of a Circle; with Application of the results to the Theory of Atomic Structure" (Thomson) WITH "On Double Refraction in Matter moving through the Aether" (Brace) in The Philosophical Magazine and Journal, Vol. VII, Sixth Series, January-June 1904, pp. 237-265 (Thomson) and pp. 317-329 (Brace)

FIRST EDITION OF J. J. THOMSON'S 'PLUM PUDDING MODEL': "THE MOST WIDELY ACCEPTED THEORY OF ATOMIC STRUCTURE UP TO ABOUT 1913" (Peacock, The Quantum Revolution, 34). In the search for an atomic model, a number of physicists "proposed atomic models with a central positive core and electrons either orbiting around it like planets around the sun or like the rings of Saturn. But none of these models could explain either the stability of the atom or the observed rules of the spectral lines" (ibid). The physicist J. J. Thomson "imagined that the electrons were embedded like plums throughout a pudding of uniform positive charge, with the number of electrons equal to the atomic number of the atom, so that the overall charge would add up to zero. At this point there was no clear evidence that positive charge comes in discrete corpuscles. Thomson imagined the electrons to be swarming around in shells or rings in such a way that their electrostatic repulsions balanced, and he was encouraged by the fact that with some mathematical fudging he could get the structure of the shells to suggest the layout of the periodic table of the elements. The model was quite unable to predict the frequencies of observed spectral lines... But Thomson's model did at least give some account of the stability of the atom, and in the period of about 1904-1909, with still no direct evidence for the existence of a central positive core, the Thomson model seemed like the best bet" (ibid). The Plum Pudding Model was abandoned with the later discovery of the atomic nucleus. J. J. Thomson wib tge 1906 Nobel Prize in Physics. CONDITION & DETAILS: London: Taylor and Francis. Entire volume. Ex-libris and bearing occasional light stamp within. New end papers. No marks at the spine whatsoever. Octavo (8.5 x 5.5 inches; 213 x 138mm). [viii], 720, [6]. 27 plates. Handsomely rebound in three quarter calf over gilt-ruled maroon paper boards. Four gilt-ruled raised bands at the spine. Gilt devices in the spine compartments. Gilt-lettered red and black spine labels. Tightly and very solidly bound. An occasional spot within, quite minor. Very good condition in every way.

THE DAY IN BOHEMIA OR LIFE AMONG THE ARTISTS BEING A JEU D'ESPRIT CONTAINING MUCH THAT IS ORIGINAL AND DIVERTING. IN WHICH THE READER WILL FIND THE COGNOMENS AND QUALITIES OF MANY PERSONS DESTINED ONE DAY TO ADORN THE ANNALS OF NATIONS, IN LETTERS, MUSIC, PAINTING, THE PLASTIC ARTS, AND EVEN BUSINESS; TOGETHER WITH THEIR FOIBLES, WEAKNESSES, AND SHORTCOMINGS. AND SOME ACCOUNT OF THE LIFE LED BY GENIUSES IN MANHATTAN'S QUARTIER LATIN

New York: Printed for the Author, 1913. First Edition. Hardcover. Slight soiling to the covers; the bottom of the spine lacking about two inches of paper. Very Good. Stiff printed brown wraps (6-1/2" x 9-5/8"). Issued in an edition of 500 copies. Though there is no indication of such in the book itself, this volume was in the possession of Louis Bryant, Reed's wife. Laid in is an interesting piece: a 6" x 7-1/4" reproduction of an unidentified figure on which is written on the verso in an unidentified hand: "In the world is a big place which is called Russia, and there is a little place, my heart, which is full of gratefulness and love for a little American doll Louise Bryant. And when Louise thinks of Russia I beg her to think of me ever yours." Following that is a name, partly obliterated, dated Moscow, April 1921. Perhaps the best known left-wing American journalist of the twentieth century; Reed was portrayed by Warren Beatty in the film REDS, nominated for twelve Academy Awards and winner of three, which centered on Reed's life, notably his romance with Louise Bryant, played by Diane Keaton, and his early death at 33 in Moscow. Reed's best known book, TEN DAYS THAT SHOOK THE WORLD, is Reed's firsthand account of the October Revolution in Russia in 1917.

        Business Cycles

Berkeley: University of California Press,, 1913. Quarto. Original publisher's buckram, red leather spine label, blue-green endpapers. Recent unobtrusive ownership inscription to the front pastedown. Slight wear to extremities, cloth a little soiled, but an excellent copy from the library of the US economist and Harvard educator Frank Taussig (1859–1940), with his ink stamp of ownership to the front free endpaper; and with a single sheet of notepaper with the letterhead of Edwin F. Gay (1867–1946), first dean of the Harvard Business School, loosely inserted. First edition of Mitchell's first book on the subject for which he remains best known. This mammoth study became the acknowledged precursor and guide for cyclical and other quantitative studies in economics for years to come. Mitchell, a leading authority on business cycles, regarded his task as the study of "money economy" and consistently sought a dynamic theory of social change. Though other contemporaries, such as Aftalion and Spiethoff achieved similar result in business cycle theories, Blaug calls his work "unique in its breadth and continuity".

Racing Car No. 11. Grand Prix de France 1913 / Le Mans Pablot sur Delage.]

Mabileau & Co, Paris 1913 - Proof, Grand Prix de France 1913, LeMans Pablot sur Delage. The Gamy-Montaut prints document various historical events in the early history of transportation, including Power Boat Racing, Motorcycle and Motor Car Racing, Motor Car Touring, Zeppelins and Airplanes. Having observed the rapidly growing interest in cars and racing during the early years of motor cars, Ernest Montaut produced his first motoring prints in the mid-1890s, and by 1897, his drawings were pictorial records of the many races in France. Montaut's work was extremely well received in the Paris of his day and was shown in the fashionable shops of the Rue de l'Opera and Rue de la Paix, as well as in the better galleries. Marguerite Montaut, Ernest's wife, joined him in his work producing not only racing prints but also developing a fine series of aviation prints commemorating such events as the first flights on the early European mail routes. While Marguerite Montaut's works were occasionally signed "M. Montaut", she also used the name "Gamy", an anagram for Magy. The Gamy-Montaut prints were all produced by the pochoir process in which the outlines for each image were drawn onto lithographic stones and printed. Using these uncoloured prints as a template, elaborate stencils were cut for each colour. Water-colour was then brushed onto the image through the stencil. The colouring process was quite complex, with each print taking several days to produce. It was also quite labour intensive, and the studio of Gamy-Montaut therefore employed a group of trained artists, including Nevil and Campion, to assist in the colouring. Hand-coloured pochoir print. Very good condition apart from some minor soiling in the left margin. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

[With an Introduction by Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch]. Paris: Hachette et cie. n.d. [1913]. French Edition de Luxe. Limited to 60 numbered copies on papier impérial du Japon (of which this is #3), signed by the artist. Large quarto (11 7/16 x 8 7/8 inches; 291 x 227 mm). 38, [2] pp. Forty-four color plates (including frontispiece) mounted on tan paper, with descriptive tissue guards, and ten drawings in black and white.Original white vellum pictorially lettered in gilt on front cover and spine. Top edge gilt, others uncut. An excellent copy."Arthur Rackham's Book of Pictures brings together a number of drawings unrelated in theme. Most of them, it is true, are drawings of the supernatural, of goblins, elves and fairies, and many are based on actual fairy tales; but there are also delightful straightforward drawings of children at the seaside or in the Broad Walk, Kensington Gardens; there is also the well-known 'Cupid's Alley' [the original of which is in the Tate Gallery], which illustrates verses by Austin Dobson, and there are subject pictures and landscapes of wide variety. It was important that such a book should be drawn together by an introductory essay, and natural for Rackham to invite [J.M.] Barrie to write it. The answer he received was cordial but disappointing: '24 June 1913. Dear Rackham, I wish I could, but I have promised to write two introductions this autumn, and had better not undertake more. Added to which I would be very bad at it as I have no skill in criticism. I am very glad to hear of the book and look forward to it. You have no greater admirer than myself, and few there are more warmly indebted to you. 'Yours very sincerely J.M. Barrie'. Rackham was fortunate in obtaining Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch as a substitute for Barrie. 'Q' not only admired Rackham's work; he also thoroughly understood a child's instinctive longing for the imaginative and fanciful. 'To this instant, constant, intellectual need of childhood no one in our day,' he wrote, 'has ministered so bountifully or so whole-heartedly as Mr. Rackham.' And Quiller-Couch was happy, too, in associating the random, impressionistic nature of much of the Book of Pictures with 'the wayward visions that tease every true artist's mind, while he bends over the day's work'". The colors of the DJ front panel remain particularily strong. Both issues are in Good condition with toning, tears and each single sheet folded three times. The July 1st, 1910 issue has two photos of Jack London and carries his story and thoughts leading up to the championship match. This copy of The Abysmal Brute is in the "Variant binding...stamped in black and green", Ahearn, 054b. A prizefighting story likely inspired by the great Johnson-Jeffries boxing match (his June 27th, 1910 New York Herald article states "Fighter with the quality of the 'Abysmal brute' will win the great battle...") where London reported on the buildup to and championship fight between, Johnson and Jeffries for the Heavyweight Championship of the World in Reno, Nevada. Johnson was the first black man to win the coveted title and on this challenge, knocked Jefferies down three times in the fourteenth round before before his corner threw in the towel. The outcome of the fight triggered race riots that evening - the Fourth of July - all across the United States. The 1936 film "Conflict" is an American film based on The Abysmal Brute, staring John Wayne. Ref. Johnson p. 319; Sisson & Martens p. 70; Woodbridge, 109, 1000 & 1004; Wikipedia.

        MEN OF MARK

London / New York:: Duckworth & Co. / Mitchell Kennerley,, 1913. First Edition. Very Good++. Very Good++ hardback First Edition First Printing in the original quarter linen cloth covered board binding with gilt lettering front cover. Covers mildly soiled, owner inscription front paste down. Darkening endpapers due to laid in invitation. Complete with all 33 tipped-in photogravure plates produced under the direct supervision of the artist, each with tissue guard. The plate number and facsimile signature are on each photo mount. 4to. 30 pp., 33 tipped-in photographs. & The laid-in invitation (present and now in archival plastic holder) was to a 1912 exhibition at the Blanchard Gallery in Los Angeles of many of these photographs. The exhibition predates publication of the book. On that invitation the subjects are referred to as "men of genius". On page 29 of Coburn's introductory comments, he thanks Arnold Bennett for suggesting the more modest "Men of Mark". Six of the photographs, including Mr. Bennett's, were taken after the Los Angeles exhibition, prior to the suggested title for the volume. Hence Coburn's original appellation "men of genius" is on invitation. The photographs reflect a rather broad world view and include artists, writers and statesmen, among others. Henri Matisse, George Bernard Shaw, Mark Twain and Theodore Roosevelt are all represented. A Scarce classic work of photo-portraiture from the early twentieth century.
